Snow Leopard vs Snow Leopard Server (part 2)

How can it be determined if a machine is a Mac OS X server edition with some degree of certainty?
This is somewhat related to previous discussion titled "Snow Leopard vs Snow Leopard Server". I'm remotely logged into a machine that runs OS X 10.6.6 and acts as an office file server; yet the folder 'Server' under '/Applications' (e.g. /Applications/Server) that should contain some useful server administration tools does not exist on this machine.
Further, if this machine turns out to be a 'workstation' rather then a server, are there any licensing issues that would prevent installation of server administration tools to it (as referenced in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_XServer)?

If you're using Screen Sharing, then look at About This Mac in the Apple menu. You'll see either Mac OS X, or Mac OS X Server there. If you're at the shell, then one of the ways you can identify the software is with the system_profiler command, in the software section.
And no; it's expected to have the software installed on a client you're managing the server from. If you want to know details, check the fine print with the package.

  • Error configuring services from Snow Leopard Server to Mountain Lion Server

    I am trying to upgrade a Snow Leopard Server Mac Mini to Mountain Lion Server.
    We have two Mac Mini servers at our office (production and backup) so I migrated the everything from our production server to the backup using the migration assistant when setting up the backup computer.
    I now have the backup at home trying to upgrade it to Mountain Lion Server.  I have downloaded and installed Mountain Lion as well as the Server App version 2.2.  I basically followed the simple directions found in the Apple documentation.
    I started the server app and it got to the part where it said "Upgrading services".  After running for a few minutes, I get a window that states "An error occurred while configuring your server."  It also sayd "The following actions failed or were not attempted:" with a red dot next to "Upgrading services".  The other three items:  "Authenticating to local directory", "Reading directory configuration" and "Authenticating to local directory services" have gray dots so I'm sure they were not even attempted.
    Our Snow Leopard server is setup for SMB file sharing, LDAP services, FTP, Web, DNS, DHCP.
    Can someone point me to where I can figure out what exactly is failing?  Are there specific log files I need to look into?

  • Complications migrating from Snow Leopard Server to Mountain Lion Server.

    I'm migrating from Snow Leopard Server to Mountain Lion Server. The article "OS X Server: Upgrade and migration" (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5381) says
    "Make sure that any DNS or DHCP servers on which your server depends remain running during the upgrade"
    This advice is reinforced by the details of the article "OS X Server: Steps to take before upgrading or migrating the Open Directory database" (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5300).
    As the server I'm migrating from provides these services it will need to be running during the migration process. This would seem to limit my options to doing the migration from a Time Machine backup (or, making a seperate clone of the server's drive and connecting it externally to the new box)
    My main concern is the seemingly inevitable clash that is going to occur on the network as the new server takes on the roles of the old one - while it is still running.
    What are my options here ?
    This is my second attempt as on my first try I did the migration from the TM backup with the network down - and none of my local network users or their home directories were migrated, although the settings for the mount points were, but there were no actual directories where they pointed to!
    Clear directions on how to procede would be VERY MUCH appreciated

    Moving from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion means first installing the client (non-Server) version of Mountain Lion and then install Server.app this means that for at least part of the process you will not be running DNS, DHCP or Open Directory.
    If you are going to end up using the same DNS name and IP address after the change then an approach you could follow would be as follows.
    Destroy any Open Directory replicas
    Archive your Open Directory Master (to make a backup)
    Note down your DNS records in case they get messed up
    Export via Workgroup Manager your users, and groups (you might not need this but better safe than sorry), make sure you do not include the diradmin account
    Keep a full back of the server (you should always have backups)
    Note down your DHCP server settings in case they get messed up
    Note down any other service settings
    Install Mountain Lion
    Install Server.app
    Install Workgroup Manager (extra free download)
    Run Server.app
    Make sure settings for services are as much as possible the same as before
    If your lucky that may be all you need to do, otherwise...
    Restore Open Directory archive, if your lucky that will be all you need to do, otherwise...
    Make new Open Directory Master
    Run Workgroup Manager
    Import users and groups you previously exported
    You will then have to set passwords for each user as these are not preserved via Workgroup Manager export
    When I did this, I was also being forced to change all my IP addresses so I had no choice but to use Workgroup Manager to export and import accounts.

  • Question about changing a Snow Leopard Server network settings

    We have an Xserve running Mac OS X Server 10.6.8, the primary services running on it are afp, smb, dhcp, dns, jabber and the calendar sever.
    Right now we have a router connecting two networks together, 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.1.0/24. The Xserve has a static IP address in the 192.168.0.0/24 range.
    In order to combine two phone systems into one I am required to combine the above networks, this will involve removing the router and changing the subnet mask on every device from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0, any device that is currently part of the 192.168.1.0/24 network will also need to have it's router setting changed from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.0.1. That part should all be easy.
    However, this is my first experience expanding a network past a standard class C and am wondering if there is anything I need to watch for on my Snow Leopard Sever.
    Specifically I wonder about dhcp settings, right now there are two dhcp servers, the Xserve which provides dhcp for 192.168.0.0/24 and the router that provides dhcp for 192.168.1.0/24. Once the router is removed the Xserve will need to provide dhcp for the entire network.
    Looking at the Xserve dhcp configuration right now I have one subnet defined providing addresses 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.125.
    Can I simply click the + to add another subnet and add for instance a range of 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.125?
    Will it simply give out all of the ip addresses in the first range and then start with the 2nd? Or do I need to find a single range of ip addresses large enough to meet my needs? (e.g. 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.225 or something).
    Is there anythign else to watch for after making this type of network setting change?

    I understand the problems that can arise using 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x and if this were a new project I would definitely switch to something else, however in this case we have been using these ip ranges for years (they were in use here long before I started) and I don't want to have to redo all of my dns settings at the same time I make these other changes so I'm going to stick with the same ip's we are using at least for now. Anyone here needing vpn access has already dealt with this issue but we  have very few vpn users so it has not been a major problem for us to date.
    My biggest question is about increasing the size of the dhcp pool. For instance, after I change all the network settings and set up a /23 network is it possible to have a single dhcp pool that includes some ip's in the 192.168.0.x range and others in the 192.168.1.x range? I guess what I am asking is when I am in Server Admin and click on DHCP one of the tabs across the top is "Subnets". Right now there is a single "subnet" configured that provides addresses from 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.125.
    Ideally I would like one dhcp pool that provides ip's in the range of 192.168.0.5 to 192.168.0.125 and then if all of those are used up, moves to 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.125. Can I do that by simply adding another "Subnet"  so there are two? Or do I have to find one larger single range? (e.g. 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.225?) You may have already answered this indicating I have to have a single larger range but I just want to be sure.
    The parts about changing subnet masks, and routers and all that I think I have a pretty good understanding of.
    Your last paragraph is something I have been worried about, I do have a feeling that after making this change there will probably be unforseen issues that will need to be resolved, I'm just hoping it is not too many. For the scope of this thread I will just focus on issues that may arise with the Snow Leopard Server however.

  • Snow Leopard Server and FCServer

    Hi.
    I'm running FCServer on an iMac, and I'm currently looking for the best solution for giving co-workers outside of our office network remote access to our FCS database. The main purpose for this is for remote users to screen and download episode segments and movies from our database.
    I was initially thinking VPN would be the only solution, but then I saw Snow Leopard Server has 'Mobile Access Server' built right into the OS, which appears designed to help users avoid having to use a VPN.
    Before I go out and buy SLS for the company, I want to be sure it will work. Am I correct that Snow Leopard Server, and the built-in Mobile Access Server, will allow users outside of our network remote access to our FCSrvr database?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. And if this question is better suited for a different forum please let me know as well.

    I posted this question in the OS X Server forum and got this response:

MAS works with plain HTTP, and the Address Book, iCal, and Mail (SMTP and IMAP) services; but FCServer is only partly HTTP-based, and I don't think even the HTTP part will work due to how MAS authenticates HTTP clients. Also, you might be thinking about using MAS as the same computer as FCServer, and it won't work that way -- MAS needs to be on a separate (internet-facing) computer from the actual origin server (which should be firewalled from the internet).+

    I have read that using Time Machine to back up Snow Leopard Server (10.6.8) itself, including the Mail and OpenDirectory modules, can cause problem when restoring.  Has a way been found to fix this?  Does it involved editing a plist?  If not, are there 3rd party software programs (other than SuperDuper and CCC) that can make a complete, restorable image?

    The most common or likely problem is that on a server some files are in constant use when the server is running. For example a FileMaker Pro Database server. As the files are in use it is possible for information to be in memory and not yet written to disk, or for the file to be in the process of being modified and only part of the modifications having been written to disk.
    Time Machine, SuperDuper and CCC are I would feel all equally likely to be affected by this. The only sure fire way to prevent this is to boot from a different drive before doing the backup. Some server software like FileMaker Pro Server has its own routines to periodic backups, you would then backup the backup file . Apple has a similar 'Archive' function in Server Admin for backing up the Open Directory databases.
    Note: A server crash is just as likely (if not more so) to result in files being in an inconsistent state. As crashes are a somewhat expected occurance the software (one hopes) has been designed to recover from this sort of state.
    Last I read Apple did not encourage using Time Machine to backup a server although I do use this. However I only use it as an additional form of backup. I also use CCC and Retrospect (you can never have too many backups). I would tend to use Time Machine as my last choice for doing a full restore, for speed reasons if nothing else.

    I recently received OS X Snow Leopard Server and I wasn't sure if I should install it. I currently run a 1 mac system, but am planning on expanding. Even with the multiple macs, I plan on using iLife and I have heard that Sever Edition does not allow this. Is this true? And if this is true, can I revert back to the regular version of snow leopard that I'm using now without of the whole archiving nonsense? All help is appreciated!

    Load it. Have at. Set up a distributed network. Configure and run DNS server. Set up and run Open Directory. Netboot. Sharing storage. All the other pieces of Mac OS X Server, or of most any other server operating system. Then when you get around to adding another Mac, you're immediately ready to go.
    Have a look at the Mac OS X Server manuals, if you're considering this Mac OS X Server path, too. As you get going with a server, you'll almost certainly be reading some or most of those.
    If you're not planning for and not expecting the extra overhead of configuring and running a server, then don't load Mac OS X Server. For a handful of boxes, running a server is definitely more effort. When you get to some (unspecified) number of boxes in your configuration, then having a server is more economical and easier. (Where that transition might be can and does vary; it tends to be a local decision.)
    And if you're looking for parts of what a server provides (such as shared storage) (without the costs and comparative complexity of running a full server), there can be alternatives. (For storage, such as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) box. And Mac OS X client can provide for up to 10 clients, too. )

    How do I connect to MySQL on Snow Leopard Server using Workbench ???
    I have freed up some of the permissions, such as port 3306, in the firewall section of Admin. However,
    this has not done the job and need to keep a firewall on a server running remotely. It is necessary to connect to MySQL before you install the database. It is needed because you must connect to the server in order to install the database enabling the script of the SQL file. I get an error that says: "Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet,' error 61." This happens when I press the button in Workbench that says: "Test Connection." I can go into MySQL and enter a password and create a database. This is necessary to load the actual data at a later time. I am also using Cold Fusion. This, too, is waiting for a connection to the MySQL server from Workbench.

    If this is Adobe Workbench as I might suspect, that's probably the wrong tool to use for troubleshooting connections and related.
    Try [Sequel Pro|http://www.sequelpro.com> or another similar tool.
    If you're running remotely via VPN, that adds additional complexity to the configuration. As part of both local and particularly remote testing, using light-weight diagnostics (such as ping) would be warranted. This before running any juggernaut-class packages over the link.
    (Put bluntly, very few juggernaut-class software packages from most any vendor will generate decent diagnostics for network errors.)

    I have mac mini server running snow leopard server. I want to install Mac OS X Lion on it.
    I have purchased Lion through App Store, but while installing on mac server it asks for Lion Server.
    I am not using any server features as of now, Can I downgrade snow leopard server to client and instal Lion on it?
    or is there any better way of installing Lion on Snow Leopard Server...

    No easy way unfortunately.
    OS X Server gets its fingers into all parts of your computer.  You'd have to go in an manually remove hundreds of files, and replace them with their counterparts from the non-server version.
    It would be MUCH easier to back up your home folder and any additional files you need, then nuke and pave with Lion non-server.  Restore your info, and you'll be back up and running.

    I have been looking at ways of hosting my websites on my own Mac - how could I do this other than purchasing a copy of Mac OSX Snow Leopard Server?
    I know you can turn on file sharing, but how can you display your sites?
    Can you host more than one site with domain names and does this mean that you would be able to ditch web hosting with a company if the sites were hosted on Mac or Mac OSX Server?

    The key appears to be turning on Web Sharing within Sys Pref's Sharing pane.   • Snow Leopard Server with Lion Server for APNS

    Hello Everyone,
    I'm wanting to keep my Snow Leopard Server (Xserve) setup in place its working great, and cant afford to have any down time on the company network. What I would like to do is setup up an additional Mac Mini with Lion server to handel just the APNS. Is this possiable.
    I would be running all of the services, mail, OD, addressbook, caladar, on the Snow leopard server but want to use Lion Server to push out and manage some Lion clients, and iPhone with a second server has anyone done this, can this setup work?

    Apart from making sure DNS is configured correctly - as always - there's not much else you need to know. Server has to be configured as an OD Master. It does work with the default self-signed certificate although Apple do recommend you purchase one from a CA such as Verisign. I mention Verisign because it's trusted by the US Government. Once you've got your push notification certificate from Apple, enable the relevant option in the Server App. From there create the enrolment profile and key in the relevant url in your IOS device. The rest is fairly obvious. If DNS is not properly configured for your network this part probably will fail.

    AFAIK Server Admin is not involved with APNS.
    "Did you just bind Lion Server too Snow Leopard Server, connect to another OD, or replica?"
    This was on a publicly accessible server that was its own OD Master. Provided things are configured correctly I can't see why it can't work with an environment that's behind NAT.

    Apart from making sure DNS is configured properly as well as the tip regarding trusted certificates I can't think of anything else? From what I've seen MDM in Lion Server is very good and what's more quick on the devices I tested. I only tested IOS devices and testing was done 'over the air.' You can still use the ICPU assuming you kept a copy of the download?

    DNS lookup is reporting that I have No A record for mail.  This is a new server setup on Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8 below is a screen shot from DNS Lookup:
    However if I use dig -t A hkmurray.net from terminal I think things look correct, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

    I am also attaching a screen shot of my DNS setup in Server Admin and any advice on how to correct if not correctly setup would be appreciated. (Oh, it appears I have nameservers set correctly for they will resolve).  How to configure mail in Server Admin Mail would also be appreciated, for some reason I always have trouble with mail setup.

    Get the name of the mail server...
    $ dig MX +short HKMURRAY.NET

    Ok.  Now translate the MX record to the IP address...
    $ dig +short mail.HKMURRAY.NET
    hkmmurray.NET.
    $
    Whoops.  That's not an A record.   (If it were an A record, I'd get an IP address there.)
    It's (also) not typical to have a domain as your mail server A record, either.
    Ignoring that error and checking further — various mail servers won't check further, as the RFC requires an A record here — and on to the next translation:
    $ dig +short HKMURRAY.NET
    68.169.178.128
    $
    Ok.  That's the public IP.
    Checking further — the following won't return the expected values, as it's already known that this mail server is not using an A record — the reverse translation is (also) incorrect:
    $ dig +short -x 68.169.178.128
    host-68-169-178-128.EPSOLT1.epbfi.com.
    $
    As part of establishing your mail server DNS, your ISP needs to add a PTR record (reverse DNS) for your IP address.  Probably to mail.hkmurray.net, if that's what you're using for your mail server.
    In conclusion, you don't have an A record.
    There's no point in having two name servers on the same host address, either. 
    Make sure your DNS server doesn't allow general access for translations, too.  If you do, you'll end up as part of a DNS-based attack; I've seen that happen with DNS servers, and the load on the servers and the Internet connection becomes... large.   Just serve your own records, with no recursion, etc.  (It can often be easiest to move the public DNS translations out to your DNS ISP and their DNS servers, too.  They're already set up to deal with reflection and magnification and other ugliness.)

    Did you turn on the Printer Sharing in the "Share" preferences panel?
    And, for Windows computers to access your printer, they need to install "Bonjour for Windows", which is a part of the iTunes+Quicktime install package, I believe.
    Alternatively, you can turn on SMB sharing on your Mac, which is also in the "Share" preferences panel. You first highlight and turn on "File Sharing", then there is an "Options..." button to the right, clicke it and check the checkbox of "Share files and folder via SMB (Windows)".
