SnowLeopard Server not providing Lion clients software updates

Hi everyone,
I've seen countless threads with the same problem and there doesn't seem to be any response whatsoever from Apple on this issue so I'm hoping someone else can shed some light on this issue..
I configured my Snow Leopard Server (10.6.8) to provide Lion client updates on my network as per the instructions and it's just not working!
My Lion clients are currently running 10.7 and I'm looking to get them updated as quickly as possible. If I cant resolve this I'll be putting them back to Snow Leopard - I knew I'd regret installing Lion!

     Clients:
mbpro:~ Barry$ defaults read /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL
http://sus.domain.com:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
On my clients I am receiving the following:
The Software Update Server (sus.domain.com) is not responding.
Check to make sure your network connection is operating normally. If there are no issues with your connection, contact your network administrator for assistance.
And if I look on Server Admin, searching for "10.7" none of those updates are copied/enabled and I can't see any OS Combo Updates?!? This has been set-up for a few days now and still nothing.
If I try to access the sucatalog url in a browser I receive a 403, forbidden error. If I do the same for say the snowleopard catalog URL I am able to view the catalog.. Permission error somewhere perhaps? Although I'm more inclined to believe that I'm unable to view the contents of this file as there are simply no 10.7 updates in the sus repository.
Oh! and it's worth mentioning that Snow Leopard clients are able to make use of the Software Update Server..
Appreciate any input
Thanks!

Hi,
I'm really sorry but because it was a while back I can't quite remember. I should have posted it in my response above, I hate when people don't do that!
If you need me to check any of my particular config I'd be more than happy to have a look

  • My Canon MX310 Series Printer failed as the software "is currently not available from the Software Update Server"? What is the matter with Apple OSX Mountain Lion?

Mountain Lion stopped working with our Canon MX310 Printer? Why is the software not available from the Software Update Server?

The printer and ICA scanner driver is available from Apple. There is probably some other reason why you cannot get the drivers.
You can also get the drivers from Canon.
But reading your post it sounds like you were printing to the MX310 and recently it has stopped printing. Is this the case?

  • I tunes could not contact the ipod software update server

Hello all,  I am running a Dell laptop running windows 7 professional with mobile broadband.  I have the latest i Tunes software installed.  I have a ipod touch that I am trying to update the software but keep getting the same error.  i tunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet.
I have seen many potential solutions and have tried them all.  What can I do to remedy this situation?

    Thank you Illaass
None of the suggestions in your link fixed my problem.  HOWEVER, I did find something that did!  I used the network diagnostic tool in i Tunes.  It was not recongizing the internet connection.  It offered some solutions, which include the ones at the link you provided plus a few more.  The fix seemed to be to de-select the option "check for server certificate revocation*" in internet options -> advanced -> scroll down to the "Security" section, 5th item in the list.  I am not a computer guy and I'm not sure why this worked, but it was a suggestion from i Tunes network diagnostics.  Hope this helps someone else.

  • ITunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet...???

    Ok I’m completely lost here....
I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600), I updated iTunes to 11.0.2.25 and some other updates for windows last night on my laptop. I try connecting to download the iOS 6.1.2 update for my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 5 via iTunes. I am getting this message for both "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Everything was fine with connecting prior to running these updates because I downloaded the 6.1 update with no problems when it came out.
What I have done so far with which has made no difference:
    Checked my internet connection
    Changed my internet connection
Signed out of iTunes and then signed back in
Ran diagnostics via iTunes, comes back with: Network interfaces verified- Internet connection failed- Secure link to iTunes store verified
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-02-20 20:40:48.
Disabled firewall, spy sweeper, virus scanner
    start>run>cmd> typed "netsh winsock reset"
    Rebooted
Checked the parental controls in iTunes
    Start>control panel>internet options>connections tab> lan settings> selected the "automatically detect settings"
    Deleted iTunes and reinstalled iTunes
When I would "ping gs.apple.com" it would come back with "request timed out" no matter what internet connection I was on, so I went into the hosts file  start>my computer>(C:)>WINDOWS>system32>drivers>ect>HOSTS and added  "#     127.0.0.1     gs.apple.com". Now it will ping gs.apple.com just fine but still comes up with the "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet" message in iTunes when i try to download the update.
If anyone can come up with any ideas that I haven’t tried, please let me know. This is keeping me back from updating both of my phones along with if anything should ever happen to them; restores as well.

im computer is connected i can go to the apple store through itunes but when i plug my phone in i keep getting that alert... i plugged my phone in to update it after the apple loaded the itunes icon and a usb showed up.

  • HP Printer Driver not currently available from Software Update server

I have an iMac (early 2009) and an HP OfficeJet 6100 Series printer.  I just upgraded my Apple Extreme Base Station and when I try to add the printer again thru the new Base Station the iMac says the software is available from the Apple Server but after searching it returns the following message: "Can't install the software for the Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet 6100 Series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."  This has been going on for days.  I have the driver installed already from having the printer connected via USB and via my old Base Station but cannot "see" the printer on my new Base Station without adding it again.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Drew

  • "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet" Help?

Hello all, new to the forums.
I've been recieving the error message "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet". This problem didn't occur at all for the past 2 years of using itunes.
I've already scanned through numerous websites and forums for help, but none of them worked.
This  set of instructions resulted in no change to any of the problems, though iTunes lists that as the supposed solution.
    # Open Internet Options from control panel.
    # Click the Connections tab.
    # Click the LAN Settings button.
    # Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
Others include installing IE7, which that didn't work either.
    Can anyone help?

Were you definitely connected to the internet at the time? If you don't have iOS 5 on your iPhone then the only way to update it would be via iTunes, once updated to the latest version of iOS you'll be able to update your iPhone without connecting to iTunes "over-the-air".
Before updating however it goes without saying to Backup your iPhone, this should happen by default upon connecting your iPhone to iTunes.

you don't need to import users from SL server to lion if your binding to your SL OD master
the SL OD master users and groups will show in profile manager
lion server has to be OD master to use profile manager, you'll end up with 2 masters the SL server
and lion. unless your planing on migrating the SL server to lion
what I'm currently using,  lion OD master is bound  the SL OD master with out username and password
SL server OD master users and groups also appear in WGM on lion server
sorry I quite don't understand why you'd want to import users from SL into lion
you'd end up with having to keep to OD's in sync with passwords and users
which kinda defeats the purpuse of having one point for authentication??
if you just want to test lion an a separate LAN you could try exporting users and groups computers from SL
and importing in lion, you'd lose the user passwords
you could still test lion proile manager without importing users just as you've done
if you've setup everything correctly and joined the SL OD master from the lion OD master users should appear in WGM and profile manger. in my case I jioned the Lion server to the SL OD master before setting up lion profile manager, OD master etc.

I get this error everytime I plug my 5s or 4s into itunes. I have connectivity, no firewall, av etc to gs.apple.com. When iOS 7 launched, it crashed while veryifng the ipsw with the apple servers. I eventually had to plug my 4s into my desktop in order to get iOS 7 to properly install. Both are on the same network, so I think something is screwy with my itunes install. I've tried to remove completely, but still no go with either phone.

what if it says itunes could not contact the iphone software update server , what to do ?

99.9% of the time, the cause of this issue is the fact the phone was jailbroken/hacked to unlock it for use on networks other than the network the phone was originally locked to. Apple maintains a database of officially unlocked iPhones, and when Apple's servers detect phones such as yours, activation stops & you get the message you got.
So, either get a sim card from the carrier your phone was originally locked to, or get it officially unlocked, because it appears that it was not officially unlocked.
