SO 8 Win & OOo 2.0 B Linux

Note: This post probably has to do with issues of incompatibility which go beyond Writer.
For a long while, I have used SO 7 on both Windows 98 SE and Mandrake Linux 10.1. No trouble, in either, reading files written on the other: except that some founts behaved differently in the two and (probably as a result) column widths in spreadsheets changed. Some months back I installed OOo 2 Beta in the Mandrake partition. No trouble reading or writing or converting SO 7 files. Around a week ago, I downloaded and installed SO 8 in Windows. On more than one occasion, I was unable to quit the program and had to do a CTL-ALT-DEL. When I re-started the program, the file recovery dialogue would come up. On the two occasions on which I tried to send reports by e-mail, all came crashing down; but if I chose another option, all was well.
But this post is concerned more with what seems to be an incompatibility between SO 8 and OOo, possibly caused by the fact that I have the two on different operating systems. When I copy *.ODT files from Windows SO 8 to Mandrake and open them in OOo, I find the formatting drastically changed: the fount is different, centred matter is left aligned, the margins are re-set (specially the right margin, which is zero). I have not so far tested more than the simplest text. Does ODT have two different meanings?

My setup is opposite to yours: SO8 on two Xandros Linux (deb-based) machines, and OOo2 (not beta) on my office Win2K.
Files move back and forth perfectly for me (though the default formatting sometimes differs so some touchup is needed; I just haven't changed the defaults on my machines yet). I compose exams and quizzes on this home Linux machine, ship them off to work, and open them there in Win2K with nary a thought.
A friend who's getting his Linux feet wet with Mandrake is reporting some trouble getting OOo2 running. I bet your trouble is either there, or simply a matter of different default paragraph formats, etc.

    Personas which have been working for a long time suddenly quit working on Win 7 and Linux. I tried changing to a different persona to change the background for the top border of the window and it just goes to some odd color and the personas just don't show up. This has been with Firefox 30, 31, 32. The personas still work with Win XP Pro run as a virtual machine on Win 7 host or Win 8 host. I thought it was a Windows thing until I saw the same problem with Linux. Everything else seems normal so this isn't a real bad problem. It's just odd.

    You can use the Transparent Gateway for Sybase to access the data from Sybase. The gateway makes the Sybase database look like a remote Oracle database.

    My advice to you is, since you have established such a reputation on this board, on issues that you don't have any knowledge or don't feel comfortable about, please just keep quiet. I don't think your job is to answer every question that has been posted on this board. Recklessly, or worse, knowingly, providing a wrong answer is much worse than no answer at all. These are serious personal accusations. Are you trying to make some noise to create some visibility for yourself? Please don't steal any of my limelight! ;-)
    Personally, I don't particularly appreciiate many of your responses to some of the questions that I posted. To me, your responses are rude, idiotic (and insults to my intelligence)!Sorry, I have no idea what makes you so upset. Are you just making this up? What questions and answers are you taking about?
    Are you referring to this post: Ralink RT5390 Does Not Work on the UEK Kernel
    May I quote/remind you of your own posting:
    We installed OL6.3 and Ubuntu 12.04 on a new Asus X45A notebook. It has a Ralink RT5390 wireless card. With Ubuntu, both wifi and video work flawlessly. However, the wifi driver (from elrepo) does not work for the the uek kernel (2.6.39). While the wifi driver works when boot into the RHEL kernel (2.6.32), it created an "even bigger problem" in that the video starts at about 1/10 from the left edge of the screen.
    But again, please no one be fooled by my overly optimistic and simplistic comments*. The reality is, I am glad OL6 desktop works at all.
    * For example, I actually installed OL6 on 4 notebooks, one of them "does not work" because I couldn't dim the screen. I did not intend to lie, but subconsciously, I somewhat forgot that there was this failed case.
    So what are you really trying to tell us/me here?
    I think you have shot yourself in the foot here. I'm afraid the best I can offer to you is to remove my response if you remove your post.

  • [SOLVED] Neverwinter Nights Diamond - Linux native client - frozen.

    Hi folks.
    I have installed Neverwinter Nights Diamond edition as a native Linux client using this HOWTO (with some of my own modifications) to achieve the goal. It worked fine.
    Basic idea was to install the game from the DVD media using wine, then download all the Linux related files / patches and unpack overwriting the existing files in the folder just like described in the howto. It worked really superb including the movies and then it stopped working.
    I have struggled to get it back to work again as there was no error...
    When I tried to start game from terminal I was getting this:
    [andrzejl@wishmacer ~]$ /media/Disk_2/Crossover/Neverwinter_Nights/nwn.sh

SO I googled for hours trying to come up with the way to troubleshoot the NWN Linux client and I got nada... zip, zero, big bobkas... There was something mentioned about syslog / messages but there was nothing in system logs that would indicate what was broken... Last night I could not sleep. It was 6 am and I was still up. Went for a quick cigarette and when I came back I have decided to try one thing...
    Here are few more details before I will tell You what I did.
    My installation folder:
    /media/Disk_2/Crossover/Neverwinter_Nights
    Launching file:
    nwn.sh
    contains this:
    #!/bin/sh
    cd /media/Disk_2/Crossover/Neverwinter_Nights/
    ./nwn
    and then the file that's being called:
    nwn
    contains this:
    #!/bin/sh
    # This script runs Neverwinter Nights from the current directory
    export SDL_MOUSE_RELATIVE=0
    export SDL_VIDEO_X11_DGAMOUSE=0
    # If you do not wish to use the SDL library included in the package, remove
    # ./lib from LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./lib:./miles:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_PRELOAD=./nwmovies.so
    export NWMOVIES_GRAB_HACK=1
    export MALLOC_CHECK_=0
    # DisableSound=1
    ./nwmain $@
    so this file calls the hard-coded file:
    nwmain
    in the main folder of the game.
    So last night I did this. Opened 2 terminal windows. In first of them I ran:
    su
    followed by root password and then:
    pacman -S gdb
    and I have accepted installation of the debugger.
    In the second window I have opened the game directory:
    cd /media/Disk_2/Crossover/Neverwinter_Nights/
    and then I ran:
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./lib:./miles:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    to make sure I have all the libraries necessary for the game to work loaded. (Notice that this is the same line that can be found in the
    nwn
    file if You need to modify this line do it). Next:
    gdb ./nwmain
    and then when I got the:
    (gdb)
    prompt I typed in:
    run
    followed by punching enter.
    This gave me the following results:
    [andrzejl@wishmacer ~]$ cd /media/Disk_2/Crossover/Neverwinter_Nights/
    [andrzejl@wishmacer Neverwinter_Nights]$ export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./lib:./miles:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    [andrzejl@wishmacer Neverwinter_Nights]$ gdb ./nwm

    nwmain               nwmovies/            nwmovies_install.pl  nwmovies.pl

    In general I wouldn't advise using any libraries from another distro. Of course you could if you know what you're doing, but who has the time, eh. Glad you got it solved.
    Hm, I suppose I have to reopen the thread.
    A few hours ago, I thought that I have solved the problem, but it appears, in many of the times started, video initialization fails, and it's nearly the same as before: Sound now always seems to work, but graphics might be totally black, somewhat dim, or frozen. Starting it several times in a row, and I get a broken game half of the time, and I can't predict when.
    I mean, it has got better altogether, because the rest of the time I have a working game!
    At the moment, I do not use any third-party libs. The reason must lie somewhere in an ArchLinux package...

  • Wine + idtech3 = faulty search path?

    i was trying some games installed on W7 (dual boot) via Wine. now, the majority of them work, but here are some exceptions: every game based on the idtech3 engine. i know they're all compatible with Wine (also know there are linux versions of them, but that's beside the point), but for some odd reason, the engine fails to recognize the actual search path for their base folder/cfg file when i try to wine the .exe. the funny thing is, i am able to play those games (base folder found), if i use the Wine Windows Program Launcher on the .exe, which is a half solution only as i need to optirun it (optimus).

    anyone met this before or have some hints for a solution?

  • My question to the Adobe developers: Why you dont offer Shockwave Player for Linux based OS?

    You know well that people who using Linux can play their games bearing Shockwave with Firefox for Windows via Wine program. So, for Haven's sake why this torment?

    Um, if you're using Wine, what good would a Linux based Shockwave player be? Why don't you install the Windows version?
    Don't know anything about it, but I thought that was why people used Wine...

    *Samba Howto: OSX10.5.8, Linux, WinXB, Win7 share*
    After several day of research and trial and error i found a solution, so that the Finder of OSX 10.5.8 shows all samba3 shares (irrespective of the operating system) in the left sidebar below the category SHARES.
    My local home network consists of an iMac 6.1 (OSX10.5.8), a MacBook 3.1 (OSX10.5.8), a Synology DSXXX (Linux), a VMWare Win7 (testing environment), a VMWare WinXP (testing environment) and Linksys WRT54GL (firmware Tomato 1,27).
    On both Mac and the DS209 I don't use the built-in Samba systems!! Instead I use Samba 3.2.15 from macports on both Macs and on my Synology DSXXX I use Samba 3.2.15 from ipkg. On Windows 7 and Windows XP I use the built-in systems.
    _Install macports Samba3_
    DO NOT ACTIVATE THE BUILT-IN SAMBA!!!
    *Important note*: The portfile of samba3 has a bug. Therefore you have to open the portfile (in a text editor) and add tow lines of code (see below). You will find the macport-samba3-portfile under
    /opt/local/var/macports/sources/rsync.macports.org/release/ports/net/samba3/Port file
    Change the original portfile from
    system "installnametool ${changeline} ${destroot}${prefix}/bin/tdbtool"
    system "installnametool ${changeline} ${destroot}${prefix}/bin/testparm"
    livecheck.type regex
    to
    system "installnametool ${changeline} ${destroot}${prefix}/bin/tdbtool"
    system "installnametool ${changeline} ${destroot}${prefix}/bin/testparm"
    +system "installnametool ${changeline} ${destroot}${prefix}/sbin/smbd"+
    +system "installnametool ${changeline} ${destroot}${prefix}/sbin/nmbd"+
    livecheck.type regex
    Afterwards you can install samba3 using the normal macport commands (or Porticus).
    _Create a smb.conf_
    After the installation create a smb.conf file under /opt/local/etc/samba3. (I will present only the \[global\] section of my smb.conf.)
    Note: replace <specification> with specifications of your computer system
    --begin smb.conf
    \[global\]
    workgroup = WORKGROUP
    netbios name = <computername, see system-preferences->Filesharing>
    server string = <computername, see system-preferences->Filesharing>
    hosts allow = 192.XXX.X. localhost
    socket options = TCP_NODELAY
    \# use my synology ds209 as wins server
    wins server = 192.XXX.XXX.XXX
    name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts bcast
    \# my imac/macbook never gets local master browser
    domain master = no
    local master = no
    preferred master = no
    os level = 0
    winbind enum users = yes
    winbind enum groups = yes
    idmap uid = 10000-110000
    idmap gid = 96000-196000
    max smbd processes = 10
    security = user
    map to guest = Bad User
    encrypt passwords = yes
    passdb backend = smbpasswd
    smb passwd file = /opt/local/var/db/smb/smbpasswd
    log file = /opt/local/var/log/smb/log.%m
    log level = 0
    max log size = 50
    --end \[global\] sector smb.conf
    _Test your samba installation_
    Now you can test your samba server running as daemon using the commandline:
    /opt/local/sbin/smbd -D
    /opt/local/sbin/nmbd -D
    Check if your samba server configuration works:
    ps -ax | grep smbd
    ps -ax | grep nmbd
    If the samba server runs well, stop it:
    /opt/local/bin/smbcontrol smbd shutdown
    /opt/local/bin/smbcontrol nmbd shutdown
    _Create LaunchDaemon files_
    Build a wrapper file and a LaunchDaemon file in order to start the samba sever automatically at boot time. (I modified the wrapper and plist files from a official macports mysql installation.)
    --beginn wrapper script
    #!/bin/sh
    \# MacPorts generated daemondo support script
    \# Init
    prefix=/opt/local
    \# Start
    Start()
    /opt/local/sbin/smbd -D
    /opt/local/sbin/nmbd -D
    \# Stop
    Stop()
    /opt/local/bin/smbcontrol nmbd shutdown
    /opt/local/bin/smbcontrol smbd shutdown
    \# Restart
    Restart()
    Stop
    Start
    \# Run
    Run()
    case $1 in
    start ) Start ;;
    stop ) Stop ;;
    restart) Restart ;;
    * ) echo "$0: unknown argument: $1";;
    esac
    \# Run a phase based on the selector
    Run $1
    --end wrapper script
    --beginn LaunchDaemon script
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>Debug</key>
    <false/>
    <key>Label</key>
    <string>org.macports.samba3</string>
    <key>OnDemand</key>
    <false/>
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/opt/local/bin/daemondo</string>
    <string>--label=samba3</string>
    <string>--start-cmd</string>
    <string>/opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.samba3/samba3.wrapper</string >
    <string>start</string>
    <string>;</string>
    <string>--stop-cmd</string>
    <string>/opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.samba3/samba3.wrapper</string >
    <string>stop</string>
    <string>;</string>
    <string>--restart-cmd</string>
    <string>/opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.samba3/samba3.wrapper</string >
    <string>restart</string>
    <string>;</string>
    <string>--pid=none</string>
    </array>
    <key>RunAtLoad</key>
    <false/>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    --end LaunchDaemon script
    _Install the wrapper and the plist files_
    Create a directory using the commandline:
    mkdir -p /opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.samba3/
    Save both files in the new created directory.
    Call the wrapper script samba3.wrapper.
    Call the plist script org.macports.samba3.plist.
    Change to the following directory:
    cd /Library/LaunchDaemons/
    Create a symlink to the samba3 plist script:
    ln -s /opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.samba3/org.macports.samba3.plist
    Load the plist file using launchctl on the commandline:
    launchctl -w load /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.samba3.plist
    Now smbd and nmbd should start at boot time.
    _Create a samba WINS server_
    *Important note*: ONLY ON SYSTEM IN A LOCAL NETWORK SHOULD BE A WINS SERVER!!
    If you don't have a Synology DSXXX try to run one of the OSX10.5.8 system as a WINS server or use a Linux box.
    Chance therefore the smb.conf file from above in the following way:
    replace <specification> with specification of your computer-system
    --begin snb.conf
    \[global\]
    workgroup = WORKGROUP
    netbios name = <computername, see system-preferencies->Filesharing>
    server string = <computername, see system-preferencies->Filesharing>
    hosts allow = 192.XXX.XXX. localhost
    socket options = TCP_NODELAY
    local master = no
    \# my synology ds209 works as wins server
    wins support = yes
    name resolve order = wins lmhosts hosts bcast
    dns proxy = yes
    \# my synology ds209 works as local master browser
    domain master = no
    local master = yes
    preferred master = yes
    os level = 65
    winbind enum users = yes
    winbind enum groups = yes
    idmap uid = 10000-110000
    idmap gid = 96000-196000
    max smbd processes = 10
    security = user
    map to guest = Bad User
    encrypt passwords = yes
    passdb backend = smbpasswd
    smb passwd file = /opt/etc/samba/smbpasswd
    log file = /opt/var/samba/log.%m
    log level = 0
    max log size = 50
    --end \[global\] sector smb.conf
    If you have a Synology DSXXX install samba 3.2.15 using ipkg. I won't here explain how you can install ipkg on a DSXXX. You will find a lot of information about this topic in different synology support, wiki and forums sites.
    *Important note*: DO NOT ACTIVATE THE BUILT-IN SAMA SYSTEM!!
    After you have installed the ipkg samba 3.2.15 on your DSXXX use the smb.conf file above in order
    to create a WINS Server on your DSXXX. (Hint: You will find the netbios name and the server string using the Webinterface Disk Station Manager 2.X -> Network -> Servername.)
    *Addtional Note 1*: I really think that you can run every linux box as a WINS Server, because the Synology operating system is linux (as far as I know).
    *Addtional Note 2*: On my Linksys WRT54GL I use static DHCP for all components of my local network.
    *Addtional Note 3*: I Have filled in Router Name (MyRouter), Hostname (MyRouter) and Domain Name (myzone.com) under Router Identification in Tomato 1.27. (Without this I couln't find my Linksys WRT54GL via full qualified domain name.)
    Kind regards, maninfo

    in laptop pc with arch i have installed somewhat in gnome under System-->administration called "shared folder". Maybe this sort of software override manual configuration in /etc/samba/smb.conf?
    Something like that is probably standing in ubuntu as well i suppose..

  • Deleted Linux my mistake in an attempt to install windows 7

    Product Name: HP Probook 4540s
    Product Number: B4V21PA#UUF
    Operating System: Suse Linux (previos)
    Error: Can't install win 7 and lost Suse Linux by accidently deleting the partition
    I encountered a problem and am really lost here.
    My laptop came with Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop edition, I mistakenly deleted the that partition in an attempt to install windows 7 on my laptop. I intended to keep both Windows 7 and Suse on my laptop. Now I can't install windows 7 as it says that some driver is missing and I was not provided with a key when I purchased this laptop but the Suse as already installed on it. Can you help or suggest what should I do? How can I get my copy of Suse Linux back?

    I would call HP on the phone to see if you can order a recovery disc set for your specific model, use that to restore Linux.

  • TCP server/client - PXI RT - Windows - Linux

    Dear all,
    I'm sorry in advance for such a newbie-question, but I could not figure it out with the help of the existing posts here.
    My situation: LV 7.1 installed on Win XP and running on the RT target PXI 1031. In this PXI I have the NI PXI 8146 RT module. To this module I have connected a Fluke DMM via GPIB (btw changing to ISA driver instead of PCI was necessary for the 8146 module), all that works OK and I can read the voltage from DMM with no problem.
    Now I have an Ethernet switch between the PXI, Win XP box and a Linux laptop. I can ping from Win box and Linux laptop to the PXI and to each other, connection is OK. What I want to do now is to get the voltage from the DMM via PXI into my laptop at least twice per second. The laptop will then be replaced by some fast data acquisition system running (independently from LV) on Linux so now I'm just trying to get the voltage value into Linux...
    I tried "Simple Data Client" and "...Server" vi-s but no success yet. My networking skills are at "ping" level... :-)
    Any hint would be appreciated. M.

    Hello miraz,
    there is a very powerful library for your exact use case:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/4095
    Alas, it requires at least LabVIEW 8.2.1.
    Maybe the RT FIFO Example which is also available for LabVIEW 7.1 will help you:

  • Zen Vision:M and linux (windows explore

    Hey
    I am wondering about the compatibility with linux. I've read some posts in this forum claiming that it's no good, which annoys me because I am really interrested in this product and I am only using linux.
    But after reading some reviews on the net, some reviewers claim that they can add songs, video etc. using windows explorer, in other words that there is not necessary to install the supplied software (some call it UMS or plug-n-play). If this really works as they claim, there should be few problems getting a linux file browser to do the same job.
    Eyeing a glimpse of hope, I've read most of the reviews on the net, and I'm getting a lot of contradictrary information: Two sites claim that it is plug-n-play compatible, several doesn't mension it (which implies there's no compatibility), and at least one claims that its plug-n-play incompatibility is its major con. I am confused!
    Anybody have any experience with linux and the vision:m? Anybody able to confirm the plug-n-play compatibility?
    And another thing, the player is described to be MTP-based. Does that mean that the player will only be browsable with win. explorer and not a linux file browser, or does this only concern the use with windows media player?

    You won't be able to add media to the Vision:M with Linux.
    You can create a MSC partition on the Vision, set it to Removable disk mode, and Linux will see it. You can copy data to it, etc. like a portable HDD, but you can't view any of these files on the player itself.
