So can you install Windows 8.1? Is it simple?

I just purchased the higher-end 15 inch late 2013 MacBook Pro, and didn't purchase the additional USB SuperDrive. Using Bootcamp I either want to set up a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 partition. But I seem to be reading different takes on what works and what doesn't. Would I be able to simply buy a USB with Windows 8.1 on it?

not 100% but don't believe bootcamp support that or even if windows itself does
thing is that if the usb drivers are loaded later then the bootcamp come into play the bootcamp bootloader can't detect the hd

it should work, according to this (rather old) discussion: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=2291517#post2291517.
Apple says in [this|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1461] support article:
    Requirements
A full, single-disc version of Windows 7 (Mac OS X v10.6 or later only), Windows Vista, Windows XP Home Edition or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later. Boot Camp does not include Windows. You must provide your own properly licensed installation disc. Important: A Windows XP installation disc must include Service Pack 2 (SP2). You cannot install an earlier version of Windows and upgrade to Windows XP, nor install an earlier version of Windows XP and update it to SP2. _*Media Center, OEM, and upgrade versions of Windows XP are not recommended*_.
but they don't say it's not possible.
    good luck !

  • Can you install Windows 7, then revert to a backup image of Vista with Rescue & Recovery?

I have a copy of 7 I want to put on my T61.  I've partitioned the OS into one partion, and the files into another.
I've made backup copies of the OS with Rescue & Recovery already, so can I install Windows 7 over Vista, then if I find I don't want to stick with it, recover back to Vista?
    T61 15.4" T9300 (2.5GHz 6MB L2) Windows 7 Professional x64 4GB Memory, NVidia Quadro NVS 140M

When you get to BOOTCAMP, that has to be changed from FAT to NTFS but you have to click Advanced Option.... button in order to change to NTFS.
The GPT error message can happen if you have more than one internal hard drive (say SSD and TB model).
If you didn't use Assistant, and some have managed, undo the partition.
Paragon CampTune $19 can also assist with installing Windows, creating the partition - but may not work with Lion, though you aren't there yet.

  • Can you install windows 8 using boot camp?

I open up boot camp and it say it can install windows 7 or later versions, and i have a widows 8 disk.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have a compatible computer, so you can install Windows 8 with Boot Camp. Make sure you mark the option to download the Windows support software, that you will burn into a USB drive and you will install after installing Windows with Boot Camp.
If you need help installing Windows 8 with Boot Camp, see > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pdf

  • Can you install Windows 8.1 Pro using Parallels on a new MacBook Pro without retina display?

I am starting a graduate school program and I would like to purchase a MacBook Pro. The options for the non-retina display fit my needs best, but it sounds like the resolution requirements for Windows 8.1 Pro do not match the MacBook Pro without retina. I need Windows to run a statistics program (SAS) and ArcGIS for mapping. Any thoughts or experience installing Windows 8.1 Pro on MBP without retina?

The native res on my 13-inch non-Retina is 1280x800. You might check with Parallels support or their forums to see if this is a problem.
If you go with the non-Retina 13-inch, I'd recommend getting 8GB RAM (standard is 4GB) because Win emulators need a fair bit of memory.

  • Can you install windows from a back up file on external hard drive?

I originally received Windows 7 Professional from a friend who was in computer sciences at the local university and received free software as a perk. It was downloaded and burned onto a disc, which she loaned to me so I could use it with Bootcamp. There were some issues with the registration, but after some time with Windows tech support everything was set up and working well, fully legal. I am no longer in contact with the friend, and I returned the boot disk to her, hence my current problem.
Today I decided to expand my bootcamp partition by using winclone to create an image, then merging the partitions and repartitioning with boot camp assistant. Unfortunately winclone didn't work for some reason. When creating the image I got an error message telling me to check the logs, which I unfortunately ignored since it appeared to have worked anyways. Now when I try to restore the image to the botcamp partition I get the error "Image file not found."
I did a back up of my windows partition before I started everything, so I still have my data. The problem is getting it back into the partition... I have a blank partition sitting there with no operating system. Is there some way to completely reinstall windows onto a blank partition using only the back up files?
As far as I know none of my friends have a start-up disk that I could borrow, and being a poor student I don't have the $300 to buy another copy of the operating system.

Thank you Andaleeb. I appear to have an old backup of a year ago, and a more recent full back up plus an incremental backup.
Regrettably I don't really understand what is going on because firstly the restore does not complete its cycle so I cannot see what that backup file contains and secondly all I have read would suggest that the .tly file is the full backup and the catalog.buc file is the incremental backup. For the present, the catalog shows the photos for 2014 which makes me think I might have backed from the old back up file.
I am minded to create another catalog and try again.
Any views on what I can do?
A backup (full or incremental) is a folder, not a file. It contains renamed pictures file copies as well a copies of the files and subfolders of the original catalog. The catalog.buc is a renamed copy of the database of your original catalog while the backup.tly. That backup.tly file contains the information to restore the renamed pictures where you decide, the original location or a new custom one. You can't do anything with the backup yourself, only the restore process can do the job if it finds the backup.tly file. In the case of an incremental backup, you have to tell the restore process where to find the incremental backup folder; it finds the backup.tly file in that folder and finds what is to restore there; then it asks you for the previous backup folder (in your case the full backup); you then browse to that full backup folder so that the restore process can find find the backup.tly there; the restore then deals with the rest of the files to restore.

  • How can i install windows games in my macbook pro

I m a game lover but since i've macbook pro,i haven't played any game on my macbook...so guys please tell me how can i install windows games to my macbook pro.

As eww said, that computer isn't specifically made for gaming. To get advanced graphics in a game, your computer needs what is called a "discrete" graphics processor, or GPU. This means a seperate chip that processes graphics. In Apple laptops, these are only found in the 15" and 17" MacBook Pro. It is not common to find these in laptops in general that are not expensive and high-end. What you have in yours is an "on-board" or "integrated" GPU. This means that graphics processing is done by a small portion of your main processor (the Intel i5 board). This takes away a portion of primary prossessing and dedicates it to graphics. This works perfectly find in most scenarios, but video rendering, gaming, and 3-D graphics tend to suffer. Most high-end, modern games require discrete GPUs to run at full quality these days.
As far as running Windows 7 and Mac OS both, yes you absolutely can. If you install Windows 7 via Bootcamp (this would require you to have a Windows 7 CD), when you turn on your computer it will default to opening up in Mac OS. But if you hold down the Option key (bottom of the keyboard next to the Command button) while the computer is booting up, it will ask you if you want to open Windows or Mac OS.

  • How can I install windows 8 on a mac without superdrive?

    Hi there.
I have an old Macbook pro (early 2007) which is still quite good, except from the superdrive which got broken.
I would like to completely wipe out OSX (Lion) from that and install Windows 8 instead.
Problem is, I cannot install it from optical drive, since it's broken (and plus, I don't have access to an external drive).
Is it even possible to install windows 8 from USB on this computer? If so, what should I do?
    Thank you!

You can only install Windows from an external disc drive or an USB drive in one of these computers:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - MacBook Air.
    - iMac (Late 2012).
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
As you don't have any of these computers, you need the SuperDrive to install Windows 8. In your case, you have to install a SuperDrive in your MacBook Pro in order to install Windows by using Boot Camp

Your issue is completely different. You are running Snow Leopard. There is no download for Windows Support software for Snow Leopard, hence the error you see. Snow Leopard Windows Support software is on the Snow Leopard installation disk.
You need the Snow Leopard installation disk or a replacement for it.

  • LaserJet 2550n network printer on XP host PC, can't install Windows 7 client laptop

Have Color LaserJet 2550n network printer connected to XP host PC. I can't install  Windows 7 client laptop for printer. The wireless network is fine, I can access documents back and forth, merely the printer doesn't work and there's no way to download 64bit drivers for this printer from HP.

    Resolved, not solved.
I talked to HP product support. The Officejet Pro 8500 A910 will not install on Windows XP (at least the Home Edition) when networked through a router. It will install through USB. I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it with only USB connected to clean out all the network printer/scanner information. Product support claimed it would install through an ether net cable connected between the printer and computer but this does little good if you need internet access.
