So easy to set up IP Printing using JetDirect/HP Laser/OSX

I am on 10.5 and have hesitated to switch to 10.6 because I have an old HP 5MP that I love, and AppleTalk has been dropped in 10.6
I have read all the horror stories on how difficult the setting are, finding the IP address, configuring, etc. etc.
I have to laugh - it took me about three hours, but in the end it's so easy it's a joke.
If you have an old Laser printer, this should work.
Get a HP JetDirect server - cheapest you can find on eBay etc - I paid $44 for a new one - a 300X.
Get a parallel printer cable.
Connect the cable to the printer and the server - connect the old appletalk ethernet cable you were using to the socket on the server.
Press the button on top of the server - it prints out the configuration (coming to that realization took two hours and 59 minutes of the three hours!!!)
Read the IP address on the configuration printout. Add printer, select IP Printing - select HP JetDirect Socket - and then the use either the Generic Drive or other for your actual driver.
It's so easy you won't believe it.
Enjoy!

I Figured it out! I copied the network settings from a pc on the network (dns and tcp/ip) and put them in on network settings. I then used my network password and user name to connect to the network. i set it up so the printer got shared from one pc on the network and then connected to that pc in the printer setup window under "windows" and further conected to the printer, chose the right driver and it worked! it only asked for my password again when i went to the printer spoule which i entered and added to my keychain. now it works perfectly!

  • How to set up new printer using Automator

I would like to create an Automator workflow to set up a new printer, so that other users can download the workflow and have the process automated for them. The workflow would need to add a new LPD printer, supply the printer's address, queue name, and printer name.
Anyone have an idea for accomplishing this?

Follow your printer's wireless installation instructions.

  • Solaris 8 - Print the HP printer using JetDirect

I see on HP's Web Site they only offer HP Jet Direct for Solaris 7. How do you print to an HP LasterJet printer (HPLJ5) connected to the network via an HP JetDirect card.
I tried lpadmin with null device and printing to an IP address and port, but I do not know if this is the right thing to do. Even if it is, I do not think I have all of the right parameters.
    Has anyone else tried this?

I do not have the exact printer model that you have, but have used several HP wireless printers that all work just fine with an AirPort Extreme.
Your wireless printer will connect to the wireless signal provided by an AirPort Extreme.....or any other wireless router.....just like any wireless device would connect to a network:
    1) Identify the network to be joined during setup
    2) Enter the wireless password to connect to the network

  • HP Deskjet 3550 cannot print using Airport Extreme via USB connection on Windows 7 64 bits

Product Name and Number: HP Deskjet 3550 Inkjet Printer
Operating System installed: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits
    Error message: None
Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred: Setting up HP printer using Airport Utility to add a new printer and installed Bonjour Print Wizard.
Problem: My printer is already set up using Airport Utility. When I print something, the printer doesn't do anything. Is there something I haven't done lately in order to get this printer working using my wifi router?
Suggestion #1: Are the print jobs getting stuck in the print queue? You can check this by clicking on the printer icon in your task tray by the clock.
Error Message #1: Yes, the print job got stuck in the print queue, but the moment, it disappeared from the print queue and the printer doesn't print at all. This is frustrating.
Suggestion #2: Does the printer work as expected if you connect it directly to the PC via USB?
Error Message #2: Yes, the printer works if I connect it directly to my PC via USB, but I don't understand why it wouldn't work with the wifi router, though.
Suggestion #3: This has to do with the way the router handles the connection to the printer. I found another thread, regarding this issue, and it has some information that may help resolve it.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Networking-and-Wireless/Print-Problem-Using -USB-Printer-on-Airp...
If that does not help, I would recommend posting on the Apple forums, as they may have more expertise with the router's abilities:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/wireless/airport
Error Message #3: After clicking on the first link that you posted, it was very helpful, but the printer couldn't print completely and somehow it would stop at the quarter of a paper. It looks incomplete when I took it out from my printer. It does that every time.

    UPDATE!
Problem solved!  So this is just a followup in case someone else ever stumbles into these boards with the same or similar problems as mine, that is, trying to run an HP Deskjet D1500 series printer [mine's a D1520] on an Airport Extreme wifi router's USB port as a network printer [with the Airport Extreme controlled by an ancient G4 PowerMac Quicksilver currently running OS X 10.4.11).
Although it probably SHOULDN'T matter, since this type of printer works fine with just the Tricolor cartridge as shipped when hooked up directly to a computer's USB port, on a hunch I got a black HP cartridge (that's a type 21, not type 22 as I had earlier said), slapped it in, tried a test page, and all's well.  So, we can call off the technoid hounds.  Everything running perfectly.
I hope this message in a bottle may help someone else out there some day soon who may be scratching his or her head with a similar stumper.  And just to recap those important Windows printer settings, they are:
    * [Printer Properties--> Ports--> Add New Port...] "Standard TCP/IP Port"
    * [Configure Port] IP Address "10.0.1.1" and Port "9100"
    Best of luck!

  • Black and white printing using Gutenprint

My HP printer has no drivers in SL, but I can print using Gutenprint.
    The Gutenprint FAQ says
For most users, the work-around is to set the Color Model setting to Grayscale. This is not the same as printing in black and white only, but it may give you what you want.
For those users who must use black and white only, the good news is that the Quartz Filter for Black and White still exists. It's just not tied into the print window. The easiest way to use the Black and White option is as follows:
Go to print the document. Use the item "Open PDF in Preview" item under the PDF Services drop down menu at the bottom left of the print window.
When the document appears in Preview, choose Save As... from the File menu.
You can either change the name or use the Replace option when prompted. Select the output format as PDF and use the Quartz Filter to select "Black and White".
Make sure you have the name and location to save the document as you want it. Click the Save button.
The resulting document will be in Black and White and you can print it normally.
I can guess what this means, but I am not certain, so I would be glad if someone has a definitive answer.
My guess is that Grayscale usually prints using the colour cartridge, but that following this procedure lets one print using the black cartridge only.
This is an important issue. Given the cost of colour cartridges, I only want to use them when I need colour, not for plain text.
I would also be interested to know the difference between the two colour modes available, labelled Color and CMYK, but this isn't so important.

Welcome to the Apple Discussion boards.
The product brochure for the DP-C213 shows that PostScript is an optional add on. Are you sure that you have the PostScript module installed? Without the optional PostScript module, you will only get the raw PostScript code when you use the PostScript driver.
The Gutenprint generic PCL drivers do not print color. They are grayscale only.
The product brochure for the DP-C213 does show that it comes standard with the PCL 6 printer module. The best color driver would be the pxlmono/pxlcolor driver. You can download all you need from http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/openprinting/macosx/pxlmon o. You will need to install three packages. The pxlmono, Foomatic-RIP, and the Ghostscript package.
Now for the confusing part. When you go to set up the printer use the *"Generic PCL 6/PCL XL Printer Foomatic/pxlcolor (recommended)"* driver. That will give you color printing. The OpenPrinting database is in error and only shows your printer to be a grayscale printer, so you *do not* want to choose the "Panasonic DP-C213 Foomatic/pxlmono (recommended)" driver. That driver will only produce grayscale printing.
EDIT: The URL for the product brochure is ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/business/office/brochures/DP-C213_Brochure .pdf

  • Setting up remote printing Epson 1400

Hi, I've just bought an Epson 1400 printer and I'm having trouble setting up remote printing using my AirPort Extreme.
I've opened AirPort Utility but it's saying it's unable to find any AirPort base stations and can't select any other options but rescan. My internet is still working and I can communicate with my laptop okay. Not sure what else to do... can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Nikki

I've reset the AEBS and it's working fine. It was seeing my printer until I disconnected the USB cable from the AEBS to the printer. The printer is know showing up as off-line.
Any suggestions on what to do next?

  • I bought a used Mac Book from the widow of a neighbor who had died.  We don't know the password.  How can we get in to set up wireless printing??

I bought a used Mac Book from the widow of a neighbor who had died.  I am trying to set up wireless printing for a new HP printer and it asks for the Administrators password.  Is there any way to break through this and create a new password?

Is the Macbook running? If yes, go to Apple Menu About This Mac to find out the version of Mac OS X you are running.
If the computer is not working, do you know the model, or the version of the operating system on the MB?
You can track down some information with the serial number. Here's how to find the serial number:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1366
With the serial number you can identify the model on this site:
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com/identify-mac-serial.php
When we know the model it will be much easier to answer your questions.

  • Setting options in "Printer" section using Applescript InDesign CS

How can i set define supplementary options found in the "Printer" section of the InDesign dialog box in a print preset using Applescript?
I would like my script to set duplex option with the proper binding, according to the page orientation.
When creating print presets manually, these extra options are stored in the print preset, but I can't find how to access them thru Applescript.
    Thanks,
    Peter

    Shane,
Thanks for your reply, but it is not yet clear to me.
I know you can set some print properties in the Apple Print event, such as copies, collating, target printer ...but how can I adress the printer-specific options, such as duplex printing? Could you give me a sample line of code?
And next step, how can I include this "Apple -print" setting in an InDesign Print preset using Applescript? I suppose I have to set the apple printer prefs before creating the InDesign preset. Right?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

Not sure if Epson has an app avaialble, but there are a number of them. Check the capabilities and reviews. Some printing apps have more capabilities that others.

  • How do I set up wireless printer w/o use of CD?

    Hello,
I spent a couple of hours trying to enable wireless connection to Brother MFC-J825DW printer. I was able to add a printer using USB cable, but how do I go about setting up the wireless printer setting without use of supplied CD? Laptop has OS 10.7.
Thanks in advance for your help.

From the Brother web page noted above:
My PC does not have a CD-ROM drive. How can I install the supplied software without a CD-ROM drive?
    Description:
The latest version of drivers, software* and manuals are available on the Brother Solutions Center.
    (*except for some software)
To download the drivers and software go to the Downloads section.
To download the manuals go to the Manuals section.
And for step-by-step network installation, see http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/us/us/en/faq/faq/000000/002700/0 00094/faq002794_005.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcj825dw_all&Cat=108
If this is more than you want to do, then as Ziatron suggested above, drop $79 on the Apple SuperDrive.

  • I used to be able to print a mosaic cover from the print tab but after downloading the most recent (10.2.2) version I cannot. Though it seems to be showing the mosaic cover in print set-up it prints a play list only. Can someone respond with help

I used to be able to print a mosaic CD cover from the print tab after purchasing music but after downloading the most recent (10.2.2) version I cannot. Though it seems to be showing the mosaic cover in the print set-up it prints a play list only. Can someone respond with help in fixing this? I've tried several times with different down-loaded music but no success.

The recent releases of iTunes have brought a bunch of bugs into the printing of CD covers.
Some people report that directing the iTunes print output to PDF, and then printing to paper from the PDF, solved their problem.  Others have reported that it did not help.  Worth a try.

  • Using the D-Link Router DIR-655 in order to set up wireless printing

Hi, I have a newly purchased D-Link Router, DIR-655, and it had a USB port which enables NAS. However, I was wondering if I would be able to set up my printer, an HP P1005, in order to print wirelessly. I plugged in the printer's usb cable into the router and I refreshed my airport. It found a "printer server" and I connected to it. However I'm now oblivious to the next step I must take in order to set up this wireless printer network.
    Any help/advice would be awesome
    Thanks.

That is of course possible. One hears that D-Link do not always play well with Macs, although my ADSL modem/router is fine. I connect my HP printer using Apple's Airport Express (that has a USB port) and maybe that is part of the installation of that device.
Have you turned on the printer sharing features in System Preferences >Sharing or even the Windows Printer.
You mention the Port number: is the firewall allowing access to that port?
