So how are the new iMacs? (Reviews, sightings, etc)

I've been scouring the 'Net for any information about the new Intel iMacs, but hardly a peep from anyone that I've seen. I'm specifically looking for information on the new 24, but any info will do.
Are they quiet? Fast?
How are the screens? Are they too big (yeah, right). I read here [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3080026&#3080026] that the screens are dark on the sides. Isolated issue?
How do the internal speakers/bigger amp sound? I'm looking to get rid of mine to free up desk space and I'd like to confidently be able to put them into storage.
I've already ordered mine last week (second Mac to own, first iMac), but I'm waiting on it to ship, as it's a BTO with everything upgraded except the RAM is only 2G. This wait is killing me! There is little info on these new Macs. Please, someone post at least a first impression introductory review.
Any info/pics that anyone can share would be greatly appreciated. I've set up RSS with Flickr, Digg, Google news and the iMac discussions and I've seen 3 different 24" unpacking photo sets with what seems to be cell phone quality snapshots and 0 reviews.
Someone fill us in and post some quality shapshots so we can see how big this thing is!
G5 1.6   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Michael,
Sorry to hear about that however once Apple ships the product it's in the hands of the shipper and Apple loses all control the same as Dell, HP, Acer etc... All the manufacturer's go to great lengths to ensure machines are packaged adequately so they can take the rigors shippers put them through however there are always going to be individual cases where contents are damaged. For example most computer manufactures make their packaging so the computers can be dropped from 10 or more feet onto a concrete floor. However there is no way they can protect a box if it's kicked in or crushed.
If she bought the computer from Apple's online store simply call AppleCare, explain the issue and they will arrange for a replacement. If it was purchased from another vendor and shipped to you then you will have to deal with that vendor's return policy.
Either way it's a shame and I'm sorry it happened to you and your daughter but rest assured it's a rare exception.
Regards,
Roger

  • How much faster are the new iMacs from my older Macpro?

Anyone have any idea how much faster a new iMac would be than my older Macpro? Please see attached image. Thanks!

There are a number of benchark tests for the new iMacs. A quick Google search found:

  • How much fast are the new iMac's?

I've been looking at upgrading my G5 PowerMac for a while and now Apple has just updated the iMac. How much faster are the new models over the just superseded ones and my G5 (spec below).
I mainly us it for my work with Photoshop CS2 and the G5 does a great job most of the time but is showing it's age. I was looking at the 2nd model but for not much more you can get the 27inch screen with better upgrade options.

    Hi Craig,
even the very first 2006 released Intel iMacs were faster than the G5 iMacs including yours.
    See this Barefeats test http://www.barefeats.com/imcd3.html
Check additional tests on Barefeats on older iMacs against newer ones http://www.barefeats.com/
The new 2010 iMacs of any sort run circles around the 2006 iMacs, so you are in for a very pleasant surprise

  • How Would The New iMac Compare To My Old PPC G5 Power-Mac?

I'm a bit out of the loop as far as the performance increases since I bought my G5 Power-Mac several years ago and if I'm honest, never really understood them that well anyways...
What I'm wondering is how the new iMac would compare to my old Power-Mac and would it be able to do what I need it to do. Here's what I have now (from my system profiler). A PowerMac PPC G5 (1.1) 2.3ghz Dual CPU. Bus speed 1.15ghz. It also has 4.5GB of Ram... I also have a dual monitor set-up but would obviously get rid of one if I bought the new iMac. The display I would be keeping would be my 30" cinema display. Would I be able to continue to use that monitor without too much hassle in a set-up with the iMac?
Any help, opinions or insights appreciated!

I have a 2.0 GHz dual core (PCIe slots) Power Mac G5 (the +late 2005+ model). It has 4GB RAM and the low-end 128mb NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE. The max is 16GB.
I also have a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo 17-inch white iMac. It has 2GB RAM and ATI Radeon X1600 (128mb) for the built-in graphics. The max RAM is 3+ GB.
Both run Leopard. Both have two displays. I mostly use the iMac currently and another family member uses the Power Mac G5. These two configs feel about equal. Some apps seem to be better optimized for Intel these days. Other older apps are PowerPC-based apps, so the G5 runs those better without the need for Rosetta on Intel. In day-to-day use, I can't say that one is better than the other.
But that's with an older Intel iMac (the low end model even when it was new). For your comparison, the current high-end iMac will undoubtedly be faster. However, with both running Leopard, I don't think the new iMac will be a +quantum leap+ in better performance. Whether the actual difference is worthwhile to you will depend more on how you use your Mac. Once Snow Leopard comes out, with it's better optimization for Intel and more efficient use of multiple processors (and other technical improvements), the story may be different.
With the new iMac lineup, you can use a 30" Cinema display (as an extended desktop) with an adapter off the Mini DisplayPort. It says so on the specs page
    http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html
"Mini DisplayPort output port with support for DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI via adapter."
"Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display."

  • When are the new iMacs coming out?

I want to buy a new iMac but I'm not sure if I should wait to get the next revision.  Are they coming out soon?

History has shown us this for the last several iMacs...
21.5" and 27" was introduced in October of 2009
The next revision was July 2010..
You should be able to see the pattern from above. If you look back further for different models you will find other similar patterns.
We never really know for sure until Apple releases the next version.

  • Are the new iMacs Merom or Conroe?

Alright so I don't totally care whether my new iMac that is coming is a Merom or a Conroe, but I'd like to know. I can't believe that is anywhere in the specs. Does anyone know? Thanks.

    Hello,
Okay cool. You would think they would put that on the
    spec sheet though...
Well, it is in there, kind-of. The show that the bus speed is lower.
But, they obviously don't want to advertise that they picked the slower of the Core2Duo products. That isn't something that they're going to want to draw attention to.
It really works in their favor that Intel decided to call both products Core2Duo instead of calling the Merom by the Centrino name and Conroe by Core2Duo.
If Intel had kept the distinctive names, Apple would have a harder time convincing us to buy a Centrino-based desktop because it would be very obvious it was being powered by a mobile processor.
But, with Intel calling them both Core2Duo, only the people who really, really care are going to look and see what it is using.
I think they probably are best leaving the details out when it comes to marketing. They still won't sell one to me (I was wanting Conroe). But, they'll sell tons of them to people who only look at the surface and see "Core2Duo".

  • Where are the new iMacs Shipping From

Hey everyone. I ordered mine thursday, BTO:
    Better 17", 2GB RAM, 2.0Ghz Intel core 2 duo.
Any Idea where it will be shipping from? I ordered a bunch of other stuff with it, and that stuff is shipping from all over the country.
    Thanks

I didn't know that, Glor. All Macs I have seen shipped that were BTOs came direct from China. Apple does has distributors here that ship the stock configurations out of course, but I was not aware of local distrbution points for BTOs as well.
I have never heard of a locally shipped BTO from anyone on these discussions.
Did any of yours come from local sources? Just curious as mine came from China.

  • Is there a way to instal Final cut studio 2 in the new iMac with Lion?

My new iMac arrived with pre installed Os x Lion. When tried to instal FCS2 it gives me error that it can't open it because PowerPC apps are no longer supported. Geniuses . I'm wandering, since I can't downgrade to snow leopard, is there a way around this. Can I buy the snow leopard, instal only the Roseta , instal FCS2 and then uninstall the Roseta?
Has any of you encounter this problem?
Are the new iMacs exclusively done to run with Lion?

You will need to install Snow Leopard in order to be able to run the FCS 2 Installer since it requires Rosetta. Note however, that the applications do not require Rosetta (they are UB). So after having installed FCS you could now upgrade to Lion if you want .... but upgrading the OS over an installed version of FCS is not recommended practice.
Personally, I'd just get a copy of Snow Leopard and stick with that .... or get FCS 3 (and stick with Snow Leopard).

Without knowing what you have tried please open System Preferences - Sharing - File Sharing and select File Sharing. If you still have trouble you can call AppleCare in the morning when they re-open. You have 90 days of telephone support if you haven't already bought AppleCare.

  • With the new iMac, are you able to use any DVD's?  If so, how?

I'm interestred in purchasing the new iMac and was wondering if it was possible to use any type of DVD with it.  Such as a movie.
If so, does the iMac have a DVD slot or how owuld one go about playing a DVD on it?
Thanks in advance and so sorry for such a simple and basic question.

Buy an external USB optical drive such as Apple's USB SuperDrive.

  • How many users are still experiencing frequent freezes on the new iMac

I've been reading about the new iMac and have seen that many people have a problem with it freezing way too often.
I'm wondering if this has been resolved or is this issue still going on?
I'm quiet keen on getting an iMac, 24" but really am starting to get a bit worried about the freezing. That is a big reason why I would be leaving Windows and so I wouldn't want to spend the money to have the same problems again.

    Hey there,
I personally have bought a new 24'' model a week ago and I do have the freezing problem, too (as stated here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1533430&tstart=15). But as far as I have been investigating the problem is related only to nVidea Graphics Cards. So if you're planing to get a Radeon Version Model (HD 2600) I think you're not going to run into much problems (but I might still be wrong). Taking the 8800 GS Option you might have the same problems that I have. Since there is an awful lot of users I think (or better pray) that this a driver problem that can be solved by a simple software update (indeed I already read of some users with 10.5.3 (beta) who said that the problem would be fixed).
The be on the totally save side, I would wait until 10.5.3 (or a seperate graphic update) and then ask your question again.

  • I didn't notice an optical drive on the new iMacs. If this is true then how are customers to insert a dvd from a new peripheral purchased?

Where is the DVD player on the new iMacs?

I'm only guessing but it is no coincidence that Lion and Mountain Lion can only be bought be download from App Store.   Apple may well only want to sell this way in the future, via the App Store.   So no need for DVD facilities.

  • How can a video editor use an NTSC studio monitor on the new iMac without a Firewire 400 port?

Looking at the new iMacs (hungrily) and wondering how I will be able to continue using my Sony DSR-11 and NTSC monitor in the absence of any Firewire 400 port.  I suppose there may be cables that will allow me to use the Firewire 800 port and am thinking they may be difficult to locate.

No they're not - they're available from many sources; i.e. I bought a FW 400 > 800 cable when I bought my iMac last August (at an authorized local reseller). Just google Firewire 400 > 800 and you'll get plenty of results. You can also opt for an adapter if you prefer. Both are also available at the Apple store online.

  • How much faster or better is the new iMac... really?

    Hello all,
I have a 20" 2.33Ghz C2D iMac w/256Meg video RAM, and 3Gig of RAM. I understand that many factors come in to play when you compare the over all speed of a computer. How much faster, over all, is the new iMacs over the system I have? Has anyone tested the two next to each-other yet? I am sure the new one is faster in some ways, but is it really lots faster in over all performance, or just a little?
    Apple //GS

    Hi Patrice,
Within Apple’s slim new 21.5- and 27-inch iMacs are NVIDIA GeForce GPUs, based on our new Kepler-class architecture, which helps make them up to 60 percent faster than last year’s models. This follows news in June that Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display uses Kepler GeForce GPUs.
The new 27-inch iMac offers the GeForce GTX 660M as its base GPU, with even faster GeForce GTX 675MX or GeForce GTX 680MX GPUs available. The 21.5-inch model comes with the GeForce GT 640M GPU, with an available upgrade to the GeForce GT 650M GPU.
    http://blogs.nvidia.com/2012/10/big-imac-news-less-heft-more-kepler/
So, any Apps that use the GPU to assist GPU should be much faster.
Though I don't see it listed here, it may be too new, I suspect it may be supported...
