So... how much RAM can my Macbook actually take? How to upgrade?

Hi all. I have a Macbook I purchased around May of 2011. It's the last of its kind to be released before the Macbook was discontinued in July of 2011. I have Snow Leopard and I'm considering upgrading to Mountain Lion because I heard that World of Warcraft no longer supports Leopard, and Snow Leopard is next in line to be dropped. Problem is I only have 2GB of RAM, and while it's treated me well so far, I'd like to upgrade. I've read that my Macbook can take only 4GB through Apple, but I've heard it can take 8GB from other sources. Can I take the safe route and only install 4GB and be okay? I only use my Macbook for web surfing, iTunes, Microsoft Word, and occasionally WoW or games on Steam. So far I can play WoW and Flash games without any issues with 2GB of RAM, but I don't know if that will change when I upgrade to Mountain Lion.
I know where to buy the proper RAM, but I don't feel comfortable installing it myself. I know Apple won't install third party RAM, so that's out unless I buy Apple (and I wouldn't mind, but I don't know how much it costs.) Where can I take it? Will Geek Squad at Best Buy do it? Or should I just buy from Apple and have them install it? Should I take the "safe" route and get 4GB of RAM or try 6GB? Will 6GB hurt my computer?

The last MacBooks produced can use 8 GB RAM and you can upgrade them to the latest version of OS X. Purchase memory from OWC / MacSales or Crucial.
Installing memory is a do it yourself project but if you are not comfortable with that then have an Apple Authorized Service Provider do it for you. Next best choice is to have a competent computer repair shop perform the installation.
I wouldn't have Best Buy wash my car.

  • How much Ram can my Macbook use?  What Hard drive should I upgrade to?

    Hi Everyone.
I have a 2008 ish macBook with 4gb of Ram.  I use vmware Fusion to run Windows every day and I also use Aperture on a regular basis.
I'm looking to breath some life into this old machine and want to know how much ram the motherboard will support.  Here are the machine's specs.
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name:          MacBook
      Model Identifier:          MacBook4,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz

      Total Number Of Cores:          2
      L2 Cache:          3 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
      Bus Speed:          800 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          MB41.00C1.B00
How muck Ram will the machine support?
My Hard drive is also nearly full and I would like to upgrade to a 500gb drive.  Any suggestions on which drive to choose?
    Thanks!!

You can install up to 6 GBs of RAM. There are any number of good choices for a hard drive replacement. I suggest visiting OWC for information on pricing, makes, and models. They also provide video tutorials on how to replace a drive in MacBooks.
To prepare for the upcoming release of Lion I also suggest spending $29 to buy a Snow Leopard DVD and upgrade your OS.

  • How much Ram can my MacBook hold?

Hi, I'm looking at upgrading my MacBook Ram from 2GB to 4GB. I've had a look around various websites, forums etc. to find out how much Ram my Mac can hold but it seems to have given me conflicting advice. The Mac is from late 2006. It has Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GHz, 250GB and currently has 2GB Ram. If anyone could give me an answer I would really appreciate it :-)
    Thanks.

I sure do. Try OWC orDataMem

  • How much ram can a macbook pro 2GHz Intel Core i7 Handle

Wanting to upgrade my RAM and need to know how much it can handle. HOpefully someone can answer this for me

Be sure you buy from a reputable Mac-friendly supplier as Macs are notoriously sensitive to memory.  Two of the best are Crucial and OWC, http://www.macsales.com
They stand behind their products, have great support, and on-line videos on doing the installation.

  • How much RAM can my macbook take? please help!

ok, my macbook was bought UNFORTUNATELY in october 2007 just 1 month before they changed the max to 4 gigs of RAM as max, now... ive heard different stories...
1.- My macbook can take up to 2 gigs of Ram
2.- My macbook can take up to 3 gigs of Ram
    .. which one is right?
    thank you in advance!

The "official" support is only for 2 GB. The evidence from people who have tried is that approximately 3GB is the actual maximum. You could either drop in a 2GB and a 1GB, although 2 2GB modules will supposedly work with part of the memory unused. The OS can only use 3 GB but I think one of the reporting mechanisms will say 4 GB.
Crucial.com only sells modules through their memory selection tool that corresponds to officially supported configurations.

  • How much RAM can my Macbook Pro hold MAX?

Can my Macbook Pro hold a MAX of 8GB or is it just 4GB? I'm getting different answers online and I'm a little annoyed at this point. My computer specs currently are:
    15 inch Laptop
MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Got my computer in 2009.
At Crucial.com it says it can hold up to 8GB when I select my computer processor speed from their list, but I noticed it saying DDR3 (and I don't know what that means to be honest). Here's the link:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=7F3A5584A5CA7304
To the best of my knowledge I selected the correct computer, which I own, from their list.
Under "About This Mac", on my computer, it says DDR2 for the memory, on Crucial.com it says DDR3. As a result I'm confused and will that cause problems?
I'll be getting my RAM kit from Crucial.com, so do I buy the 4BG kit, because that's all my laptop can handle, or is it OK to get the 8GB kit, which says DDR3?
I do a lot of video and audio, so I would like to get my RAM up to 8 GB if it will.
    Thanks

One more question friend....You've been so helpful
Will these two sticks work together on my machine?
    2GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=B54C51B4A5CA7304
    along with a...
    4GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-CT51264AC800-200-pin-SODIMM-PC2-6400/dp/B001RB21JE
So these two would add up to 6GB total. Now the ONLY DIFFERENCE that I see is the 2GB stick is PC2-5300(667Mhz)speed and the 4GB stick is PC2-6400(800Mhz)speed. I understand that my machine won't run at the 800Mhz speed that the PC2-6400 stick is designed for, cause my machine says 667 under the memory info. From what I read online, it's ok to put a higher Mhz stick in there, it will just cap at 667Mhz speed? But.......both sticks are DDR2, which is right for my computer, but will the 667 MHz with a 800 Mhz be a huge no-no to run together? At this point I think that is my main concern! If I can't do this, than I think I'll have to go with the 2x2GB kit for 4GB total, but I REALLY would like to run 6GB.
    Shew.... :P
    Thanks again!

  • How much pressure can the macbook screen take??????

i have just bought a macbook pro retina late 2013. I was wondering how much pressure can the screen take???????

You said you verified a very close (hopefully with a magnifier) look with varying background colors at the point of impact that there was no color variation as indicative of a hairline crack.
So, AFTER the impact, the white line has appeared 3 times since?
If that is the case you have a hairline crack that you missed upon close inspection or actual, but rare, LCD damaged that didnt manifest an actual crack.
in which case make appt. with Apple on your display. If there IS a crack you missed at inspection or genuine LCD damage, there is no way to fix that, the display would have to be replaced.

  • How much RAM can my Macbook Pro (early 2011) actually hold?

I currently only have 2x2 RAM in my Mac, but I've been reading I can put up to 16GB... Is this true?
I want to upgrade to 16, but I'm unsure if my system will actually accept it or not, which is why I'm here...
I've been reading on Apples site that it can only hold 2x4, and on other sites it can hold up to 2x8, which one is correct...?
    Thanks guys.
    (Bought in February 2011. 2.3GHz i5, 320GB SATA Disk.)

    16GB will be recognized.

  • How much ram can my MacBook Pro 15 Inch, Early 2008 2.4 Core Duo 2 Take? 3 or 4 GB?

My MacBook Pro 15 Inch is a early 2008 model.
    It is a 2.4 Core 2 Duo.
I'm confused if it can take a max of 3 or 4 GB RAM.  Right now it has 2 GB.
First question:  Can it take 3 or 4?
Second question:  Will I notice an increase in speed?
BTW - I checked the Apple document on removing/installing memory - but the matrix where my early 2008 15 inch is covered is confusing and it seems it would fall into either the 3 or 4 - depending on how your read it.

Get the free MacTracker, it will give more accurate RAM information than the manual, as the manual get printed with the current RAM being sold, not the new stuff, so your Mac could possibly hold more.
Yes your computer will be faster at some things with more RAM, but like a car, many parts also have to be fast, the CPU, the GPU, the hard drive speed, bus speed etc.
Some things you can change, other things you can't and sometimes you need to backup your files and wipe the disk and reinstall everything all over again.
Sometimes it's a slow Internet, or slow wifi network or something running on your machine.
Host of issues cause slowdowns, this might be one of them

  • How much RAM can my MacBook Pro hold?

I've seen a bunch of these type of questions on here, and have gotten mixed answers.  Some people say that the max is 6GB and some say the max is 8GB.
    Here are my specs:
    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2009
    In Memory it says:
Your Mac contains 2 memory slots, each of which accepts
    a 1067 MHz DDR3 memory module.
I currently have 2GB of RAM in each slot
Crucial seems to think that I can get an 8GB upgrade kit:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=MacBook%20Pro%20(15-inch%2C%20 Mid%202009)&Cat=RAM
has anyone done this with a similar comp? Is 8GB possible?
    Thanks for your help!!

    A model 5.4 15" 2009 MBP will recognize 8 GB RAM with the following specifications:  204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2 GHz

What is the maximum amount of RAM that I can upgrade to 4GB or 8GB?
Original manuals state 4GB. Some sites state that with the proper updates in place, state it can address up to 8GB.

The model 5,1 (Late 2008, Aluminum Unibody) can use 8gb of 204 pin 1066mhz PC3-8500 RAM

  • How Much Ram Can My MacBook Support?

I have a MacBook (not the pro or the air just a macbook) and i was wondering if it can support 8gb or 16gb because ive been hearing lots of different things.
Also if anyone knows a link to a website for help on installing ram then that would be appreciated

The MBPs from 2011 and later support 8 GB according to Apple, but third parties such as Crucial and OWC have been successful with 16 GB.  The 2012 models support 16 GB.

  • How much ram can my macbook pro accept?

I was hoping that someone can help me.  I have had my Macbook Pro since 2006.  I love the computer and for the most part, it is still running really well.  Lately, I have been noticing that it is taking longer for it to boot up and slowing down when running some applications.  This happens primarily when viewing videos online via Facebook, YouTube, etc.  I was wondering if maybe upgrading the RAM would help this.  I am not sure if I could really upgrade this or not on an older MacBook.  Here is the specs of my MacBook Pro:
It is a MacBook Pro 17" Intel Core 2 Duo, Processor Speed of 2.33 GHz, 2 GB Memory.  I have a storage capacity of 99.69 GB, with 23.03 GB Available.  I am currently running OS X 10.6, but am upgrading to OS X 10.7 in the next day or 2.
I haven't done any other troubleshooting at this time.  I didn't want to try to fix this problem blind.  I thought that I would try and get some expert advice before doing anything.
Also, the computer gets pretty hot when running videos and playing games.  Anyway to fix this too?  Thanks!

I think you have the late 2006 MacBook. If so then:
