So, how much space do I actually have available?

OK, so I have my new MacBook Air with a 256 GB SSD and I have been using it for a fortnight or so.
One thing that perplexes me is that I am getting different values for the available space left on the SSD and it is a little confusing. The system, of course, is running OS X 10.7 Lion, but I just don't know if this is a MBA, SSD, OSX or just plain old maths issues!
In the Finder, I am told I have 123.44 GB available ...
In PathFinder, I am told I have 108.6 GB available ...
In Disk Utility, I am also told the same as PathFinder, that I have 108.64 GB available ...
And finally, Terminal (and using df -h) tells me something else (although this is probably a base 2 issue), that I have 101 GB free.
So, which one is right?!
Thanks,
Sam

Try
df -H
for GB output

  • When I buy a 16gb iPad air, how much space do I actually have after pre-installed apps? Can any of those be deleted?

How much space do you get on a ipad air 16gb considering the pre-installed apps? Can any of those be removed to free up space?

With iOS 7 it is recommended that you have 15-20% of the storage space on the device free.
For a 16 GB device that is 2.4 - 3.2 GB free. So 13 minus 3= 10 GB of storage for music, photos, movies and documents.

  • How much RAM do I actually have?

Hi, this might be a stupid question but I'm simply confused.
I have a T510 that should have 4GB of RAM since that's what I paid for, here are the specs I got:
Instead this is what I have, the sticker says 2GB not 4GB, however when I go to system info. this is what it says..The FRU number is 55Y3713
    Any help is appreciated thanks!

Unless you specifically requested a 32bit windows version, you really should get a 64bit, your spec sheet does say it comes with 64bit, but your system info clearly says you have 32bit windows, so you can't use all of your RAM.

  • PROBLEMS WITH HOW MUCH SPACE IS ACTUALLY BEING USED

    Hello,
I've just recently purchased a Toshiba Dual Core laptop (225 gigs + 3 gig memory.) It works pretty well, but I've had to reload the windows and programs again. The reason is that after reloading I have about 203 gigs of space, but then I install flash CS3 (550 mgs and photoshop 200+) After I've installed all the doc files and everything I end up with about 200 gigs of space which is great. However, I've unistalled norton and installed AVG Professional. My space amount has gone down from 200 to about 193 gigs. I don't get it; it doesn't make sense because this is isn't how much space I've actually used. I've deleted temp files and all the install files of these other programs and what's even more crazy is that when I go ahead and run scan disk to deleted unecessary files, my space goes down in size and it shows that I have even less space! Has anyone else run into this problem? Let me know, perhaps there's a solution.
    Thanks,
    Tseyigai

Maybe that part number is PSLE8U-02P01D?  If so, you have this model:  Satellite L355D-S7901
How much space would be reasonable for me to cut back on?
I've set the shadow storage on the computers around here to 10 GB. Suit yourself.
You can save quite a bit of hard drive space by turning hibernation off. Check the size of that file. It's c:\hiberfil.sys.
And look through the stuff Disk Cleanup cites for more savings.
But if you really can't get along without more space, you should add external drives or upgrade this one.

  • How much space do I have in the cloud?

    Hi,
I was just wondering how much space we have as an individual in the cloud?
    Thanks,

'iTunes in the Cloud' doesn't involve any storage because it's simply permission for you to re-download anything you've already purchased - obviously it's all stored in the Store's servers. iTunes Match, on the other hand, is actual storage for you, and so is limited to 25,000 songs (purchased items don't count towards this limit as they don't have to be stored in your space).

  • When I see the usage on my iPod touch 4 they have categories for how much space is being used where. What does the "other" category contain? Like what could I delete on my iPod to get rid of the "other" category?

when I see the usage on my iPod touch 4 they have categories for how much space is being used where. What does the "other" category contain? Like what could I delete on my iPod to get rid of the "other" category?

What is the Other on my iPhone and How to Remove It
An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.
    First try:
"First you go settings/general/usage/music/then left swipe over music and press delete and you would think it deletes your music but it doesn't instead it deletes your other but make sure your ipod is connected to a computer while doing this"
    as recommended by:
How do I get rid of "other" storage: Apple Support Communities
Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:

  • I want to update my Mac from 10.6.8 to Mavericks, but every time it says update unavailable for this computer. How do I check for space available or how much space I  have used? Help please, I am new to using Mac computers.

I am a new Mac user and I bought a refrubished Mac that has Mac OS X VERSION 10.6.8. I have been wanting to upgrade to Mavericks, but every time I go to do that a message comes up saying OS X Mavericks cannot be installed on this computer. Is there anyway I can instal it? Better yet how can I look up how much GB of memory I have and the available storage?

    1. No, but you might be able to upgrade to Lion. Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check that the computer has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU, and if so, click here.
    2. Check the RAM from the About this Mac window, choose Computer from the Finder's Go menu, control-click the internal drive, and choose Get Info. If the computer has a 32-bit EFI, it can't be upgraded to Mountain Lion or above regardless of the RAM and free drive space.

  • How do I find out how much space I have left on my macbook pro? I downloaded the new mavericks operating system and can't figure it out. Before the space would be at the bottom of my finder.

I downloaded the new mavericks operating system on my macbook pro and I can't find out how much space I have left. Before the installation of mavericks, storage space left was displayed at the bottom of the Finder window.

In the Finder, under the View menu there is an option to Show Status Bar.  Select that and you will see the info on the bottom of folders again.

  • How do find out how much space I have in iCloud? How do I see what I have there? How do I see how much a pay for it?

It is probably easy but ...
    (1) If I want to see my account, how much do I pay each year, how much space do I have for storage what link do I use ... everything goes to support and explanations ...
    (2) How do I access iCloud Storage? What if I need more?
    (3) What is the difference between iWork and iCloud
    (4) I am worry about security with everything moving to iCloud ...
How can I control the security of my contacts, back up space, etc.

Go to System Preferences>iCloud - there is an indicator at the bottom of the pane showing how much of your storage you are using.
The basic account of 5GB is free. Additional storage for Backup, Documents etc: additional 10GB, $20 p.a., 20 GB, $40 p.a., 50GB $100 p.a. (note that this is not iDisk-type storage for any type of file).
iWork is a set of three programs available in Mac and iOS versions - Pages, Numbers and Keynote. iwork.com was an online storage for posting iWork documents - it's closed and its functions superceded by iCloud.
Your iCloud account is as secure as your password, so make sure it's a strong one - at least 8 characters (12 is better), one of which must be lower case, one upper case and one a numeral (no odd characters), and not your birthday, dog's name, or 'password'!
