So how often does InDesign screw up footnote numbers?

I've read many complaints about ID's limited footnote capability on this forum and elsewhere, but I recently had a problem I don't recall seeing before: export to PDF corrupted footnote numbers, in no pattern I could see.
My work is scholarly material with lots of footnotes, and I've been using ID seriously since version 2 (when footnotes still had to be done by hand à la PageMaker).  Final output is generally print, though some jobs also want PDFs for electronic distribution.  I mostly use tried-and-true IDCS4, though I have later versions installed on a test-bed.  I'm fully updated, under 64-bit Win7 (Intel i7-2600 with 16 GB RAM).  I like to proof in PDF, and have generated untold thousands.  This week, for the first time ever, ID's export to PDF screwed up footnote numbering on some 80 pp. in a 500-pp. book.  Has anyone else seen this?
In the bad PDF, the footnote numbers in the text (re-started from 1 by perhaps 18 ID "sections") are fine, but on about 15% of the pages (perhaps 30% of the pages with footnotes) the numbers in the notes had increased their values by 2 or 3.  The corruption was not easy to spot, and once a few errors were noticed I needed to assess the damage: I generated a new PDF from a duplicate file, with the same Press settings, and used Acrobat 9 Pro's text comparison against the bad file to find all the differences.
Both the original ID file and the duplicate look fine on screen, suggesting the problem occurred during this one export.  The job is a tricky one, a single ID file to accommodate some 2,100 cross-references.  It began as a Unicode text file I imported into IDCS4, where I used GREP to convert ASCII tagging to InDesign formatting (italics, etc.).  The file had shown some instability, occasionally reporting a dozen cross-references spontaneously going bad.  Passing the file through IDML did not cure this (I assume INX would strip the cross-refs).  However, stability returned when I replaced the one piece of art, an EPS vector, with an AI conversion.
I'd like to think this was just a quirk of that one instance of exporting, perhaps because a leak somewhere reduced memory available to ID.  Or do I need to run an Acrobat comparison before I send anything out?
Thanks,
David

There is absolutely no relationship between what InDesign installs (and uses) and the operation of Microsoft Word and Acrobat. InDesign does not install any system components or share any system components with Word and Acrobat.
Look elsewhere for causes and solutions. In the case of Acrobat, if you have specific issues with printing with specific types of PDF files and/or devices, post your questions on the appropriate Acrobat forum (“Printing and Prepress”).

  • How often does iCloud sync ?.

How often does iCloud sync my devices ??

Your Mac's address book, on the front page - was the address you added inside a group that is listed in the general category "iCloud" or "On my mac" ?  If the latter, then that doesn't sync to iCloud.    If iCloud, you might try a small editing change to the entry, like erase last letter of last name, get out of address book, go back in and put the last letter back in.  That should force a sync.

  • How often does Cisco release signature updates?

Hi, i would like to know how often does Cisco release updates for the Signature engine for the IPS appliances? I was not sure to make the auto update from Cisco.com to be every-day, every-hour or once a week?
Also can you advise me of the recommended setting for Bypass feature for the interfaces?

Since the auto-update checks go out the management interface it maybe better to have it set for every hour. That way you wont have delays in the critical updates. Assuming you are in inline traffic mode, setting the bypass to "auto" is the recommended setting for interfaces. That is also the default.

  • How often does Firefox Sync back-up data? I see there is no preference selection allowing you to change the pre-set frequency (whatever that interval may be).

How often does Firefox Sync back-up data? I see there is no preference selection allowing you to change the pre-set frequency (whatever that interval may be).

However, the sync action only triggers every 60-minute and there is no user-configurable option provided. Although one can put a Sync icon onto the toolbar for easier access, it is still far from practical needs.
To unlock this limitation, do the following:
    1) Type “about:config” at the address bar
    2) Search for “services.sync.syncInterval”
    3) Change the value from 3600000 (milliseconds = 3600 seconds = 60 minutes) to any value (in millisecond) of your choice
    4) Close and restart Firefox
The Sync action will now trigger at the interval you just set.

By default, how often does OS X Tiger sync with an NTP Time server? I am monitoring my systems with the tcpdump command and I never seem to see my Macs trying to sync with our time server. It seems like it only syncs at boot or when the Time & Dat System Pref Pane is opened manually.

  • How often does your CF instance need to restart?

I'm considering CF as an application solution for a critical
department..and not having much experience with it , was wondering
how often does the CF service need to be restarted ? hourly, daily,
    weekly, monthly?????
i've had experiences with other app servers that at times
could be quite annoying...and would like to get some real world
    input on the issue.
    Many thanks..

It definitely depends on how you code and set up the site.
I've worked at a few places where the only time we restarted the CF
servers (or services) were when we actually switched servers. Other
places we had scheduled maintenance windows and did the restarts
then, sometimes they were needed while other times it was just for
    the sake of doing it.
You should also take into consideration the OS reboots, for
Win2k3 or 2k8 you'll sometimes need to install critical patches
which need to restart to take effect. I don't know about UNIX or
    Solaris and the others.

  • Quick Question - how often does a device check-in to see if it needs an iOS update?

simple question which i cant get an answer from Apple or the Normal discussion forums, so thought i woudl try the developer forums.
how often does a device check-in to see if it needs an iOS update?
and if its perodically (something like 7 days) would that explain why on two devices - one would show as the latest update being 7.0.4 and one shows 7.0.6?

    How ddid you ask Apple?
This information is probably simply not disclosed.

  • How often does the m7 take a steps measurement?

I have an iPhone 5s. I checked my steps in the health app and if I am to believe what I saw, the m7 takes 5 or 6 measurements per minute (that part I believe) and the hard part is that I took 200 or so steps in 1 minute. How often is the iPhone taking a steps measurement? It's not like I was running. I was in the grocery store, I think.

    Hi Kumar,
I wasn't sure if it is done dynamically whenever there are changes or if there were timers that it uses to conduct it's table refresh rates and are those timers adjustable?  The documentation on the Cisco site is very vague when it comes to CEF tables on IOS's 15.1 and above.  Any good links you have on how it does it's updating would be very helpful to me - thanks!

  • How often does Mail download from a POP account?

I'm trying to help a friend, but I'm not that Apple-savvy. I know in Windows mail clients, there are settings to adjust how often mail is downloaded from a POP server, but I couldn't find any such setting in my friend's MacBook mail application. He is running 10.4.11. Does it only download each time you launch the mail application or click the "Get Mail" button? Does it download on some pre-set schedule that can't be changed? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

"but I couldn't find any such setting in my friend's MacBook mail application."
I believe the equivalent setting is:
    Mail>Preferences>General>*Check for new mail.*
"Does it download on some pre-set schedule that can't be changed?"
You can change the times for the +"Check for new mail"+ setting manually or use the computer setting.

  • How often does Verizon update DNS?

How often - How quickly,  does Verizon update it's DNS servers?
The reason that I must ask is that I have just changed wevhosts and cannot connect to my new host.

Yes, before you reply  -  I have checked using network-tools.com  and my site is in public dns

How long should I wait before looking at alternative DNS?
I am on the North Shore of Massachusetts - the delay is unbearable.

    Nice, real nice............
Lesson learned - warning to those who might be hosting a web site and change servers + hosts
"yeah, you can go ahead and do that"
    It's a combination of things.
First it depends how fast your hosting isp issues a DNS push to send out your new address and then it's dependant on how fast the push trickles through all the dns servers in the world.  I believe if you check with your hosting isp they will say it can take up to 24 hours to propogate around everywhere.  You could use one of your hosting isp's dns servers as your primary dns server and then you should see the chnages virtually immediately, however that could slow down other access slightly as it might be slower to reach than a near at hand verizon server.

  • How often does the Apple TV sync with updated home sharing playlists?

I am trying to use several Apple TV's at my business for content management throughout our campus.  I want to be able to have a playlist of pictures and videos that is easy to update.  Can anyone tell me how often the Apple TV syncs with the home sharing network for an updated playlist?  It would be very inconvenient if the only way was to do a reboot on every device each time content was updated.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I can't really say for sure how often the Apple TV updates its shared libraries.
I do however know that once the Apple TV as completed playing something, it will sync with the shared library in order to update the play count. So I'd be reasonably sure that the shared library is updated at least once every time something is played.

  • How often does iTunes store update podcast feed?

I've been producing a weekly podcast for six weeks now. My mp3s are hosted on archive.org and I post them on Tumblr. Feedburner pulls the tumblr feed, and iTunes pulls the Feedburner feed. Feedburner usually updates within ten minutes of any new posts or changes I make on Tumblr, and usually, the iTunes podcast page updates just as quickly. Then sometimes, like today, hours go by and I see no update in iTunes and I get paranoid that I did something wrong and wonder if I need to delete and start over again.
I follow the same formula every week with my posts, so I don't believe anything I've done is incorrect (I'm always careful remember to remove the "s" from "https://" which gave me problems when I first started). I just have no idea how often the iTunes Store actually attempts to update. Is there a standard time, or range of time?
Here is my Feedburner page: http://feeds.feedburner.com/YaxzonJackson
Here is the iTunes podcast page: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/yaxzon-jackson/id914021875

When you add a new episode to your feed and upload it, it appears immediately for subscribers because their iTunes application reads the feed directly and the Store is not involved.
However because of the huge number of podcasts in the Store (thousands) the Store caches the feed and checks it for updates periodically. For this reason it usually takes 1-2 days for new episodes to appear in the Store: sometimes it can be less, and occasionally the whole process seems to get stuck and it can take several days.
You podcast is up to date in the Store with an episode posted yesterday; if you've been used to quicker results you've just been lucky; you can't rely on it always happening.

  • How often does mozilla check for mail?

I simply want to know how often Mozilla Thunderbird checks for new mail. Can I change this time period to more or less often?

As often as you tell it to check. Note, some email providers limit the frequency with which one is allowed to check for new mail. An interval of less than 10 min doesn't really make sense.
Tools (Alt-T) - Account Settings - Server Settings
Check for new messages every x minutes.

  • How often does my Curve 9300 check for new email messages?

    Hello everyone,
I hope that you are all well.
I use a Curve 9300 (3G) and assumed that it checked for and retrieved new emails all of the time. However, it seems that it only retreives new messages from my email account every so often. Could someone please let me know how often it checks for new emails?
Also, when I run a Diagnostic Test in the Mobile Network Options menu the result says NO when it tests to see if it is connected to my email account. When I ran tests a while ago the result was YES. Could someone please let me know if this is anything to worry about?
    Many thanks.

First, you have a misunderstanding that the handheld device "checks" for messages. They don't.
RIM's technology on which the company and popularity was built is that RIM servers go out to your email server and checks for new mail and "pushes" those messages to your handheld BlackBerry.
On a normal POP3 email server, that occurs every 15 minutes and if new messages are found they are pushed and the RIM server checks again in 2 minutes for a few cycles, and after 3-4 cycles of two minute checks, if no new messages are found, it reverts to 15 minutes.
On an IMAP email server, the push is instant. An example of this might gmail accounts, yahoo mail, and private domains hosted by GoDaddy.

  • How often does macbook update their products?

I know this might be a silly and some of you may be thinking "I have no clue!", but I was wondering how often mac seems to be updating their products. Since I am seriously considering a mackbook, since reading all of your wonderful reviews to my previous post, I am thinking if I should wait on the macbook until Christmas comes along in case a new product(s) emerges? If ya'll could please leave some feedback that would be great!Ya'll have been a wonderful help!

I asked a similar question not long ago. Turns out you cannot speculate about future Apple products on this forum; against terms of use. If you would like to ask such questions, a good forum to join is appleinsider(dot)com or macrumors(dot)com.
