i am tired of buying externals that just die in a year.
can i use icloud to back up all my stuff, not just docs made for apple apps?
or would i be better using another cloud service like dropbox?

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it. -
I just bought a Samsung 830 256GB solid state drive which I will use to replace my 15-inch, 2.53 GHz, Mid 2009 MacBook Pro's stock hard drive. I also keep an external hard drive in which I keep my regular Time Machine backups via FireWire. Would I be able to migrate all my data from it after putting in the solid state drive? I prefer not to use any third-party applications and I do not plan on replacing the SuperDrive with the hard drive that I'm going to remove from my laptop.

I want to create a two partition disk. One partition for time machine, the other for Lightroom backup. Currently Time Machine is using the entire drive and it is doing the intial encryption and is about 29% complete after two days. I've decided that I want to turn encryption off and partition the disk. So I do I start over?
With the external drive attached, open Finder>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility. Select the external drive from the list in the left side panel of the DU window. In the main window panel, click Partition in the buttons top center of that panel.
Select the number of partitions you want and adjust their sizes.
For the first partition, click to highlight the partition, then select the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then the partition table as GUID [both of those are the defaults]. Click Apply and it will ask to confirm and erase and format that partion...oh, give the partition a name, like Backup.
Then repeat those steps for the second partition..and remember to name it...something like Lightroom.
Close Disk Utilitty and you are ready to send TM to the one partition, and do your backup of Lightroom to the second partition. -

I am finally taking the leap to use Time machine to back everything.
will I have to reformat that drive, thus wiping my previous back ups?

or even synch and merge files and folders etc? between the two?You CAN use a drive with files already on it to store Time Machine backups. But long term, that is not recommended. You do not need to reformat or re-partition the drive to do this. Once Time Machine Backups are established, you could remove the old files.
But do not delete Time Machines files with the Finder -- that can cause it to lose its place and lose everything.
With the cost of backup drives under US$100, it might be a better idea in the long run to get another drive. Best results from Time Machine is a drive about 3 times larger than the drive(s) you are backing up. -
i got a macbook pro 2008 and can not back up using time machine. it eject my external hard drive everytime. does anybody has a fix???
Does your external hard drive have it's own power supply? It should.
Is your external hard drive formatted with the NTFS file system? It won't work.
It needs to be formatted either with Mac OS Extended or FAT32.
(There are drivers available to add NTFS support to OS X but their quality is unknown, especially the "free" ones.) -
I hate to say it.. But I have never backed up!! I have thousands of pics of my son on this mac book, it got wet and NOW I'm backing up (as i type) to a Seagate external hard drive- I plugged it in, and then Time MAchine launched automatically. To restore this in a new Mac, you have to use Migration Assistant. Just connect the Time Machine drive into the new computer, open Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps. You will be able to select what you want to transfer.
Also, if you have a brand-new Mac, you can do this during the initial setup. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the Time Machine disk and follow the steps -

How to keep using existing Time Machine backup after replacing main hard drive
The hard drive in my iMac (Lion) is failing. I cloned it to a new drive and installed it in the iMac. Now the system wants to start fresh with a whole new Time Machine backup.
It seems obvious that there must be a way to keep using the existing Time Machine backup set, but I can't figure out how to do it. Help, please.If you had done a full system restore from Time Machine, it would have been done automatically. But 3rd-party cloning apps don't leave a "trail" so Time Machine can figure out that the new drive has all the old stuff on it.
Effective with Lion, there is a way to "associate" the new drive with the backups of the old one, but it requires the use of Terminal. See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. As noted though, this only works on directly-connected backup drives, not backups made over a network. -
Can I use 'Macintosh HD' folder time machine creates like any other hard drive folder?
Very simply, is it possible, after using Time Machine to back up my Laptop, to use the 'Macintosh HD' Folder it creates like I would any other hard drive by selecting and extracting specific folders and backed up items as I see fit instead of going in to the Time Machine software and asking it to restore the drive to one of its 'backups' -essentially governing what exactly goes back in to my freshly cleared out laptop's internal hard drive? Will I run in to any problems? I am asking as I have picked up a software bug that I need to wipe off laptop hdd that would still be in the backups I have done and go back on to the laptop if I just asked Time Machine to restore.

If you have a desktop Mac, you can back up to a shared drive connected to it, over your network. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #22 for setup instructions.
Some NAS drives work with Time Machine, to one degree or another, but I don't recommend that -- there are too many possible downsides. See the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #2. -
yesterday morning I was working and a window randomly popped up for time machine. I don't have the exact wording that was on the pop up window because I assumed it wasn't spam as it was asking me to choose a place to store my time machine backup. I've never seen this window before but just a couple week ago I was having storage problems and hae tried to fix them by clearing some files. So I assumed this window was about helping clear some space on the computer. So I chose my silver hard drive to use for the backup for time machine. 20 min later I get another pop up that is asking me if I'm sure I want to choose my silver hard drive as it will erase anything that is currently on the drive - I immediately panicked and chose "NO" for it to not use the hard drive. I assumed I was in the clear at this point. But I didn't check the drive until later yestsrday evening and now the folder is empty when I open the drive. Yet when I check the space available on the drive it shows over 400G that's taken and 600+G that's available which means the files I had on there are still there but I can't see them? Where have they gone? And was this time machine pop up window spam? I opened my time machine and it was turned off?
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ as the path.

Yes, you can do this and it's something I've been trying to do, but I'm currently having issues. I have another thread stating I consistently get "connection failed" messages. I'm basically storing my music/photo/video files on the TC and keeping my Mac hard drive fairly lean. In terms of NAS functionality, the TC is very basic. Synology/QNAP and others have a lot more features so don't rule them out. -

The bottom line is that Apple does not support Time Machine backups at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. If they don't support their own router, they certainly don't support other routers from other manufacturers.
Connect the drive directly to the Mac using either USB or FireWire.....or....use a Time Capsule. Either of these setups will be supported.
If you want to try the unsupported method(s), you can certainly do so. But, I would suggest that you have a secondary backup plan in place if this is important data that you will be backing up. -
I am using Iphoto 11 ver 9.4.3 on mac using oxs 10.8.5 i want to export calendar projects to an external hard drive. my goal is to store them in an external hard drive so it doesn't use up memory on the mac hard drive. is it possible to copy the specific projects without copying the entire library? what is the easiest way to do this? i have tried export and import but it didn't seem to work.

You can duplicate the iPhoto library (command - D ) and delete everything except the project and its photos from the copy and move that

However the calendar takes very little space - it is simpy database entries - it is the photos in the calendar that take space - and for most people you would wnat to keep those photos in your library
you can use a photo in 50 calendars and it still is only one photo in your library - as I explained calenders do not exist as such - they are simply database entries telling iPhotop how to display the calendar - they take almost no space at all
