So I've been working on speeding up my eMac....

And I followed the advise of various threads around for increasing performance. One thing I did was go in and repair the permissions via the Disk Utility application already on my machine. Also I downloaded and tried to run this program "Onyx":

(note this is the link for the Onyx 10.5.x, I went to the company website and downloaded the correct version for my OS 10.4.11)
Ayway when Onyx starts up it automatically checks something called S.T.A.R.T. and then it checks the volume on the start up disk. It gives me a message "The Volume needs to be repaired". And tells me to use the disk utility on the Mac OSX disk to repair it. Well, that disk utulity appears to be the same one as the utility in my installed operating system, the utility I already ran. Am I looking at the wrong utility on the disk, or otherwise missing something? Is there some other way to repair this?
Also another quick question:
After making a few adjustments, the machine is definitely running faster. Thank you apple boards! The only thing that is really noticeably slow is web video, youtube, for example. It's very jerky, the sound sometimes continues while the video freezes for a few seconds etc. I'm not sure if this is fixable via all these utilities and other standard performance enhancing ideas or if it's just a symptom of having a five year old computer. Any thoughts?

-G4 eMac 1 Gig PowerPC Processor
-512 MB memory
-OS X 10.4.11
-26.5 Gig free on my 80 gig internal harddrive.
-I also have an external drive of 300 Gigs half of which is filled, mostly with my iTunes music folder. (As well as a few other storage files on their, but the iTunes folder is the only file that works with an active program. If you know what I mean, the rest is rarely used spreadsheet files, .pdf's, etc.)
The computer is slightly slower with this external drive attached, but not that much. And, since it has my iTunes folder and I use iTunes all the time, it's gotta stay attached.

When the message to use disk utility on OS X popped up you need to make sure that the version of disk utility on your eMac is the same version as the disk utility app on your OS X install discs or you won't be able to repair the volume.
You mentioned you have an external drive. If it is a firewire drive and it has been formatted as an HFS+ extended (journaled) drive, you could "clone a copy of of your OS to that drive, boot that drive as the start-up drive and do the repairs to your eMac's drive from your external drive.
Another thing, 512 MB is really bare minimum for OS X Tiger. You could spend the money and install an extra 512 Mb of RAM to give your eMac maximum Ram of 1 Gigabyte.
Tiger will run much better on 1 Gb worth of RAM

I cannot open my document! I have been working on it for days and now it won't open!

I have been working on a document in Pages, and it was just fine last night. I went in to finish up today and it will not let me open it! It just keeps says something went wrong. I can get into other documents but not this one. I need it for work tomorrow! Help!

Apple does a poor job of documenting/explaining this setting - the iTunes Media folder location setting in Edit > Preferences > Advanced doesn't tell iTunes where to find the content of your library. Rather, this determines where iTunes will put new content when you add it. Current locations are held within the iTunes database (the iTunes Library.itl file). As tt2 says, if you hold down SHIFT while starting iTunes and when you get this prompt:
click on Choose Library..., navigate to your D: drive and select the iTunes Library.itl file that should be there. Ideally you should have copied everything to D:\iTunes with this structure:

As I said, I don't use Time Machine, so it'd be best to wait for an "expert" answer, but, with my very limited knowledge, I'd say: probably not - so, for now, I'd suggest you read up on Time Machine:

I would say to start by looking on their web site... unfortunately, that appears to be dead.
Based on the horrible ratings on the App Store (1 star for the current version), I'm not surprised it doesn't work well.

My podcast has been accepted by apple and has been working on the itunes store for a few years until recently. If I search for it I can see some of the episodes but no matter which store I am in I am told I can't few the episodes in my current store

I have a podcast that has been submitted to itunes a few years back that has been working just fine. The person updating it broke it a few months back, I have fixed the error and reformatted it but the podcast still doesn't work. If I go in itunes and choose to open stream and connect to the podcast URL there, then it works just fine, but If I search for it in the itunes store (search: Jubilee Community Church) then a couple of the episodes show up (see The Art of Marriage by Stephen van Rhyn) but if I click on any of them it just tells me that my podcast is not available in the current store. But I submitted it from the UK store and it is not even available on that store. I have send numerous emails to Apple Support but they have been incredibly unhelpful. I hoped it would update overtime and start working again but its been a month and still nothing, I can't get hold of anyone technical from itunes support to reload my podcast or tell me whats wrong, I can't even resubmit my podcast because it's already been submitted and therefore won't allow me too. I've run out of options, any help would be appreciated!

Artifacts and corruption on Photoshop CC files that have been worked on a lot

I'm having the problem below when working on a Photoshop file created with Adobe Photoshop CC. I have had this issue on 2 different machines and 2 versions of photoshop, working from my hard drive. This is what I get:
As you can see it's totally messed up my photoshop file and when I export out (as a JPEG/PNG etc) it still has the artifacts. I have now had this with 2 different retina Macbook Pros running 2 versions of CC. I've never had this before and have used CS5 for years with no issues and I'm not using a network so I'm thinking it's something to do with CC. Here's when it usually occurs:
- When I have been working on a file a lot, these are mocks for clients and it tends to be happening on the homepage (which has had the most iterations)
- Seems to be connected to smart layers (but not exclusively), when I try and mask with a smart layer I'll get strange banding and some of the text will render with obscure colouring
- It also affects the layers, text layers that cover small areas of the canvas are selectable from nowhere near and they obscure other layers
- I can click into text layers and update the colour and sometimes that will fix them and they re-render normally
- It seems to degrade the more I work on it, the first thing will be small lines, then the layers will obscure other layers (for no obvious reason when trying to select them) and then the colour banding will appear
At the moment is causing me a bit of a headache and I can't see how to get this PSD back without recreating the entire design.
Can someone please help....

Seems strange that I would get the same problem on 2 different macs with the same results. Is there anyway of finding out if it is the ram/hd before splashing out on either fixing it or getting a new Mac? Also like I said I never had this problem with CS5, which I used on one of the macs before I upgraded. I've got a feeling if I take this problem to the Apple store they are probably going to say it's the software and not the hardware.

Maybe the document is corrupted. Can you open other Pages documents? Preview may open it. Right click (or control click) on the document in Finder and Open With > Preview.
If that works, Edit > Select All, Edit > Copy. Then paste into a blank Pages document. Formatting may be messed up, but you will have editable text. Then Save (with a different name), close and see if you can open the new document.

And you are quite persistent, Menu Boy, in offering pernickety and pointless prattle, in response to a "support page" on iPad's buggy Pages App.
Let's summarise, for those reviewing this threadless thread for app support..
Mobile pages works reliably for simple docs, especially creating letters and Menus for Microsoft's Kindy canteen (even on special days with nice big pictures).
When importing more complex docs and/or working with larger creations, it is prone to randomly corrupting files upon re-opening, along similar lines as Word (running on a PC).
So, Menu Boy, do they let you sneak into classes every now and then? What is the secret to their training? "Say after me, if any I.T. product works just some of the time, that's a job well done, and if something randomly stops working, we call that the user's fault... And if they complain, we call them names."

Have you tried closing the Mail app completely ? From the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Sounds like a problem with the router installation/configuration (likely) or a DOA router (very unlikely).
Visit the forums for the router manufacturer (i.e., linksys, d-link, etc.) and ask for assistance there. There is probably a link to help listed in the router manual.

Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database.

Restoring your iPod to factory settings is the best way to try and get it back to working order. You can use the instructions below to restore it:
How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.

Hello, I have songs that show they are "Waiting" for download from the cloud but they are greyed out. Some songs in one album are done others in the same album will not download. It is not a time function because i have been working on this for weeks. I have allowed my compter to run for days and the songs are still not accessible. I have a Match subscription and Match is working. If I click on the "Genre" link the greyed out songs show that they are ready for download from the cloud but I cannot download them. I have downloaded over 1500 other songs, so I am trying to understand what is going on here. I would appreciate any help anyone can give me.

I did think about that and if I have to I will do that, however there are about 50 songs. I have closed and reopened iTunes several times and I am sure that I have the latest version. It fails right away but I can click on the cloud download icon and download the song that it failed on ... therefore it is not that song "or any one song" causing the issue. Any ideas?
