So I wasted my money?

Been a happy user of my 2nd gen ipod touch for the last year or so, but.....
Recently tried to download an app which wouldn't load as it required 4.3 - no problem I thought, just go and get the update only to discover that the 2nd gen doesn't have a 4.3 update and research suggests will not get any better IOS than 4.2.1.
More and more apps will require 4.3, that is a certainty so are Apple trying to tell me the ipod I bought brand new, paid good money for is now pointless?
I understand obsolescence, it's the reason I'm not typing this on my external 28.8k modem but to have a product effectively shunned by its creators in such a short timescale is a little disappointing and puts me off upgrading to a newer Apple product for fear of facing the same dilemma in another couple of years.
I hope to read among the responses (if any) that Apple will either release a 4.3 version for my ipod or at least maintain a library of previous versions of apps that will retain functionality once the app store goes out of bounds for us 2nd gen users

Thank you all for your replies, albeit if they did miss the point somewhat.
Yes, I know all my current apps will still work, I won't be able to upgrade them anyway so i'm clearly stuck with the ones I have - let's just hope that I never ever want to try something new.....
I always have a back up copy of my apps, I just feel a little saddened that as time goes by all I will end up with IS those old apps, an ever decreasing scale of functionality matched to the ever increasing list of unavailable apps.
It would be nice to have the option of choosing whether the features of an old app outweigh the features of a new app but it seems I will not get the chance to find out unless Apple release a 4.3 for my ipod.
My mention of a facility whereby previous versions could be made available can be demonstrated by my trying to download a new app to try out which would not install - access to the previous versions would at least give me the chance to try something new once in a while.
Effectively, my 2nd gen ipod will fall further behind with each new IOS that I cannot upgrade to that I will finally be bored by its limitations and likely discard it as I certainly won't be able to sell it which sad eventually still leads me to believe that without continued support for this product I have basically wasted my money...

  • Is it possible to easily run Microsoft office 2010 with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

Okay , first off thanks for any help in advance . I just purchased a MacBook pro for my daughter for college . ( finance major ) . Her class requires Microsoft office 2010 with access .  As you probably already know , and I have just learned , that is no offered for Mac. Is there an easy way To run ms office with access on a MacBook pro or have I wasted my money ?

All that matters is file compatibility. The documents look the same. I've been a professor, so I don't see any issues here at all.
Another option you may want to consider is this: Run Windows on the Mac:
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows
XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  For Boot Camp
4.0 and above you can only use Windows 7 or later. Follow
instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

Trying to copy ANY file from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive spins for 45 minutes then fails. I hate this computer and WISH I never would have wasted my money. Any ideas? WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Worst computer I have EVER owned, crashes non-stop, constantly freezes, and seems like EVERY operation is more complicated with this thing. Literally, my 1997 Compaq was FAR MORE reliable and user friendly.

This is one of the messages I keep getting; The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in -- File Whatever -- can’t be read or written.(Error code -36)
I have copied things to the hard drive in the past, but it has always been incredibly slow, and now just seems to freeze and fail

  • Why can't I use the landscape feature for iPhone 5? It only works in limited apps. I feel as though I wasted my money since I prefer to use my phone in landscape mode.

Why can't I use the landscape feature in all of the apps? It seems like a waste of money since I prefer to use the landscape feature.

It is up to the app developer to decide if the app should work in landscape mode or not. This is also true on Android phones, by the way.

  • If my peak "physical memory" usage is around 50%, is adding more RAM a waste of money?

I have a W700-DS with the T9600 dual-core and an SSD, and when running 4GB of RAM I'd notice that memory usage tended to rarely exceed 50%. Just for the heck of it, I just upgraded to 8GB of RAM, and now I'm curious as to whether I wasted my money, as the 4GB usage never hit 100%. One thing I did notice is that my "Windows Experience Index" went from 5.9 to 6.4, but I'm guessing maybe that's just marketing BS from Microsoft.
    Thanks for your opinions.

If you haven't checked it out already, take a look at what the Resource Monitor tells you. I'm "using" only abpit 3GB out of 12 right now, but 9GB is marked "standby" -- memory filled by SuperFetch with items I'm most likely to need. The memory is still availalbe for something else if Windows/SuperFetch guessed wrong, but if it guessed right, it's already there and ready to go. Thus the boost to your Experience Index isn't total BS. You may actually be find your system more responsive. For example, if you always start your morning reading email, then check a website, then finally open your primary work applications, having more RAM allows SuperFetch to predictively load more of this while you're doing something else.
Interstingly, as I was typing this, my In Use dropped to 2.7G, Standby has filled the remainign 9.3G and free is down to 0 (Hardware Reserved is a negligible 113MB).
You don't mention exactly what OS you're using, but I'm going to presume Windows 7 x64... with a 32-bit OS, you definitely would have been wasting your money with its nominal 3GB limit. SuperFetch wasn't quite as good with Vista, but there would still be some benefit there, I think. I have no experience with XP x64.

  • HT4311 Hi, I am trying to use my phone in Japan. It is a PAYG phone purchased directly from the Apple web store currently with Vodafone. Have tried to purchase a sim in Japan but can not do. Help please! I feel as if I have wasted my money! Bought 5 iPads

    Hi again,
I have purchased 5 iPads and 1 iPhone 4S in the UK thinking if I invest in an Apple top of the range I am covered worldwide for usage. Apparently not!
Got the phone as a PAYG and use with vodaphone, but got it direct from Apple.
Any help to buy a microchip from Japan would be much appreciated.
I feel as if I have wasted my money.

    Hi @imobl,
You sound like an Apple support guy who hasn't been able to answer my questions.
To respond to some of the points you made,
    - I did not ignore Ocean20's suggestion. If you has read my post, you would have known that I took my phone to the apple service centre where they tried this restore on THEIR machines. I am assuming that Apple guys know how not to block iTunes. So I actually do not understand your point about me trying the hosts file changes on my machine. Do you not believe that apple tested this issue with the correct settings?
    - you also give a flawed logic of why the issue is a hardware issue. You mentioned that If I thought that the issue was with the software, i should try a restore and getting it to work. The problem is that my error (23), and many others comes up when the restore fails. And you would be astonished to know that not all errors are hardware errors. Sometimes even software errors prevent restores. Funnily enough Apple itself mention that 'in rare cases, error 23 could be hardware related'.
    - all Apple has done so far is replicate the issue. I don not know how anyone can conclude that the issue is a hardware issue.
And by the way, I am not certain that this is a software bug. Again if you read my Posts, you will notice I only want a confirmation,/proof that the issue is hardware related as they mention..
Please refrain do. Responding if there is nothing to add.

  • IPod 1st generation....did I waste my money?

I just purchased an iPad 1st generation and can't install very many,if any apps from the app store because of the iOS not being 6 or 7.  There doesn't seem to be a way to upgrade the iOS. Any helpful advice or did I just waste my money?

The first gen iPad only supports up to iOS 5.1.1 - is that what you have (Settings > General > About > Version) ?
Some developers allow you to download previous compatible versions of their apps. If it's a free app then try downloading the current version of it on your computer's iTunes so that the app is in your account's purchase history, and then on your iPad see if you can download a previous compatible version via the Purchased tab in the App Store app. If it's a paid-for app then try contacting the app's developer first (there should be a link to their website on the app's description page in the store) and see if that will work for their app - don't just buy it just in case they don't support it.

  • LaCie DVD burner almost a waste of money?

Has anyone with OSX 10.3.9 got a LaCie 22x d2 DVD +/-RW Drive to write DVDs from the Finder?
I have an Apple iBook Power PC G4 with an  internal drive which writes only CDs.
I bought the LaCie d2 Drive [ Product code 301484EK ] so I could write DVDs.
    It has the latest Firmware v1.20 ( Oct 4  2009 ).
I have used the supplied DVD-ROM to install the software and it showed a message
    "Install LaCie DiscRecording Support
    The software was successfully installed
Click Restart to finish installing the software."
I did a Restart as required.
It does write DVDs from Toast7 Basic, included on the DVD-ROM sent with the Drive, but it will not write DVDs from the Finder.
Finder/File/ does not show the expected option "New Burn Folder" which is what I expected from LaCie Support web site - as the following link claims:
    http://www.lacie.com/us/support/support_manifest.htm?id=10113&article=1065
I have spent countless hours exchanging emails with LaCie Tech Support but they do not have a solution.
    http://www.lacie.com/UK/mystuff/ticket/ticket.htm?id=101666718
At the request of LaCie Tech Support, the software has also been downloaded from
    http://www.lacie.com/us/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10055
    but no improvement.
The LaCie DVD Writer does appear in System Profiler, but Disc Burning is shown as "Not Supported".
I have used Firewire connections as LaCie recommended, but I get the same poor results using USB, DVDs, CDs.
I have tried to use Disk Utility to burn a disk image on a blank DVD on the LaCie drive, but that does not work either.
Although I can manage to write DVDs using Toast, so my main requirement has been met, it is unsatisfactory to have bought new equipment directly from the manufacturer only to find that the claimed features do not all work.
Have I just been wasting my time expecting this drive to work as LaCie claimed with OSX 10.3.9?
I see other users have had trouble with LaCie even with OSX more recent than 10.3.9.
    See:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3306858?start=0&tstart=0
    I recently purchased an LaCie DVD writer d2 DVD + / - 22.
    and
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/445220?start=0&tstart=0
LaCie DVD burner total waste of money
    So I am still asking
"Has anyone with OSX 10.3.9 got LaCie 22x d2 DVD +/-RW Drive to write DVDs from the Finder?"

    Thanks for helpful reply.
"If that fails, check with them if they can get you at least a Roxio Toast Lite version that works with it."
Not really necessary as I CAN already use TOAST as stated below, as in original post.
"It does write DVDs from Toast7 Basic, included on the DVD-ROM sent with the Drive, but it will not write DVDs from the Finder."
    "Have you tried http://www.patchburn.de/"?
Not yet, but that looks good.
They even have a version which could work with our other Apple - G4 iMac on OSX 10.2.8 - which would be very convenient.
"http://www.macsales.com/ is much more reliable in terms of selling burners worldwide that work with any version of Mac OS X."
    Perhaps.
But their web site includes the identical LaCie DVD Writer, with just the usual claims about OK for OSX 10.3.9.
    No specialwarnings or restrictions mentioned.

    Thanks again for your help.

  • DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON CREATIVE PRODU

i am writing this to let everyone know that creative is taking your money on ALL of there soundcard models with the connector for the front panel audio. they claim ac'97 compliant front audio panels are not supported. there are very limited number of cases on the market today with a hi def front audio panel. i wonder how come my inputs do not work when they should. more to the point, why is it that the onboard sound from all of the mobo's i have ever had work with both ac 97 and hi def, but this sound card will not. where is it shown on the box that this is not compliant with ac97? well i think that this is baad on the part of creative to sell something without making thiws clear on the box, instead they wish to send you an article saying it was incompatible? i am the customer i bought this product to replace my onboard, well if my onboard wroks better and i get my front audio panels then why waste my money on a POS that does not even work as it should? i got an instruction manual in the box like one that comes with an inteld945gtplr motherboard with one exception (intel instruction manual had english instructions, and had more pictured details)? not even in this fold out "instruction manual" did it state that this sound card was incompatible with ac97 connectors. i am going back to onboard and saving myself 00.00?in the process,? and i WILL NOT be buying another creative product because they are obviously not concerned about their customers,?i have seen numerous cases designed for gamers and only like 2 have a high def front panel, and all of the stuff i have found on front audio panels show that you CAN use ac97 compliant on intel hi def according to creative this is not the case at all. well my evga 680i is an intel hi def compatible header and my ac97 works on it. save yourselves some money and do not buy a creative product. don't even waste your money on a more expensi've model with the front dri've bay (why would you want to use 970 and 80's /4 inch heaphone jack which is not the standard)? creative dropped the ball on this one. if you have an extreme gamer sound card and have your front panel audio working by all means share (via e-mail so creative does not get away with knowing how to get it to work right) creative should pay a fee for this information as we spent money on this product and it does not work with most our cases and it is not made clear from the start.

the point is creti've states that the extreme gamer card will NOT work with an ac'97 case. creative needs to do some research on this, if you hook them up correctly it boils down to how to set it up in audio manager and they do not have a clue. i got this working on my own with no tech support. i would like to see evga get into the sound card market, i have their mobo (nvidia 680i reference board) and their video card 640 Mb 8800GTS (hopefully will have a second one soon in sli config). and i have had no issues but at least evga has taken time to help by researching to give the best tech support. creative does not even know that the front panel hi-def plug will in fact work with ac'97 compliant audio header dongles, even intel has a schematic on how to connect ac'97 dongles to hi-def panel connectors.
to creative:? do some research on this issue and learn what your own product is capable of. since according to you ac'97 compliant connectors do not work with this sound card i have no choice but to recommend to my customers not to buy these products and seeing as how all of the x-fi's i have seen with the bay mount panel use a /4" jack i will not recommend them as this is not standard, there is no one here that sells headphones with a /4" jack (except goodwill stores) and most of my customers do not like the use of adapters on their headphones to make it compatible.
i also no longer recommend asus products to my customers for the exact same reason, no tech support, did not know their own products, except asus just wanted to blame another manufacturer. if you at creative do not realise that the extreme gamer is ac'97 compliant (my case is ac'97 and it now my front panel works off of the card) you need to do some more reaserch on your product. build a system with an ac'97 front header dongle, and figure out the correct audio manager setting and let you customers know. there are more users with ac'97 compliant cases than hi def, to date i know of no custom cases except for 2 which are high def front panels, and most of these cases are manufactured 05 to current.

  • Did I waste my money?

ok so i bought the Isight a few months back and have yet to use it. I am an AOL user so I have a aol account. I want to go on line and meet people and have video chats with the people I meet. is this possible and how? are there certain groups or chats that are exlcusive to isight members? can i only do this by meeting other Ichat users with i sights? I have almost given up on this thing. it is my least favorite apple purchase. please advise.

    Tony,
I want to help you get your money's worth with regards to your recent iSight web cam purchase. No you did not waste your money. In time it will be one of the most valuable tools on your computer. But you do have to configure it properly for it to work.
Please provide a few more details:
    1. Confirm your current OS. Is it X.4? If it is, you may want to consider updating to the most current OS.
    2. Have you set up an AIM account? If not, then you need to do this. (see Ralph Johns' posts on how to do this or refer to the readme, or ichat help menu).
    3. What happens when you start up the computer, and then plug in the camera after it is booted up? Does ichatav launch by itself (yes/no)? If not then set your pref's up accordingly under ichat "video".
    4. Also set your video pref's in ichat to "none".
    5. How are you connected to the internet? Is it via airport or ethernet? Airport works ok but it can be slightly more problematic than a direct ethernet connection.
iChat AV mandates a high speed connection. For example I use cox cable HS (coaxial) at about 4 mb/sec.
    6. Also check Ralph Johns' site for a list of places where you can test you web cam. He mentions all of them. But if you still can't find then, then feel free to test with me via AIM: SDMacuser1
    7. Depending on how your system is connected to the internet, it may be necessary to address certain port settings if you are unable access ichatav. For example, i use a toshiba pcx2500 cox cable modem. That in turn is connected to a Belkin Gateway 4 port roughter (which mandates i address certain ports for ichatav to work properly... like port 5060) You may have to do likewise in a similar situation. It just depends on your own setup.
Give us as many details as possible on how your system connects to the internet so we can further troubleshoot with you.
It all sounds complicated but with a few simple steps, in time your system will be up and working as expected.
    Good Luck

  • Sorry I wasted my money.

I regret wasting my money on the Droid 2. It has a few things I like but it not only locks up for no reason from time to time, but it came with a lot of apps I will never use and can’t uninstall.
The last time I updated it, the update put in a lot of bookmarks I won’t use and I can’t remove. It seems Google or Verizon believes they still own the phone even though I paid for it.

Welcome to bloatware. If you don't like those things find a Nexus phone (with Verizon there's only the Galaxy Nexus). They are the only droids that come with no preinstalled anything really.
