So if the signal drop is caused by the hand physically blocking antennae...

Apple is trying to convince us that this issue "exists in all smartphones" and that its caused by the hand physically blocking the antennae. Heres their education on it:
http://www.apple.com/antenna/
However, if the case is the hand blocking the antennae, as they want us to believe, then how come the iPhone4's signal problems can be reproduced without even touching the phone?
There are many videos of the phones antennae being shorted with a house key, part of a paper clip, etc, with the users hand nowhere near the phone. In fact, the person could stand 100 yards away and zoom in and see the signal gone with just a staple covering the black line.
Basically what I'm saying is, just because the result is similar does not mean its the same issue.
They should have announced a hardware fix, along with the bumpers for now. A simple polymer coating of the antennae, to reduce conductivity, would have fixed the problem, not required new FCC approval, and cost probably 25 cents per phone to implement.

The facts are very basic:
1. Coming close to an antenna affects its impedance and its signal-carrying characteristics (ie. it can attenuate the signal) because antennas are designed and tuned assuming there are no conducting surfaces near it
2. Obviously, you cannot avoid close proximity to a cell phone antenna
3. Most other phones have the antenna surrounded by the case, so while you can get close, you are not directly contacting it
4. Apple chose to place the bare-metal antennae on the outside, where you your body (composed mostly of conducting H2O) making a direct electrical connection to them
5. To make matters worse, they placed two different antennas (cell and WiFi/BT) very close together - separated by a millimeter. Shorting those antennas is very easy to do. Not a great idea.
6. A case will keep your hands from shorting the gap, and also avoid direct electrical contact. This makes it similar to other smartphones.
So, while having the antenna act as the rim of the case sounds really cool and innovative, from an engineering efficiency standpoint it was a lousy idea.

  • Linksys WRT330N with Intel Wifi 5100 AGN causing signal drops.

I have been using my Linksys WRT330N for quite a while, and it has been wonderful.  I have 3 pcs, 2 wired and 1 wireless.  The wireless laptop died and was replaced.  The replacement is causing problems and I need assistance finding a solution.  The new laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 and it has an Intel Wifi Wireless AGN internal wireless adapter.  My two wired pc's can surf the net without the slightest hicup until the wireless laptop with its wireless N card gets into the action.  Once the laptop gets on, the hicups are frequent.

As you can see the signal drops show as the router resetting.  It was not me unplugging it.  The router as the only firmware which is available, v1.00.4 and the network drivers for the laptop's wireless wifi 5100 card are up to date.  A Dell technitian controlled my laptop and did it himself.
    Any suggestions?

and this is what happens when i try to watch a video on hulu.com

  • Bell TV receptor signal drop every 4 min caused by TimeCapsule

I just got my Fibe 50 installed here in Quebec, Canada, and every 4 minutes there is a signal drop. I had 2 technicians coming home and finally we discovered that there is a DHCP conflit between both of them. When I turn off the TimeCapsule and uses only bell router, the problem disappears. Does anybody had the same problem or know if there is any configuration to solve the problem? In the TimeCapsule settings I have already changed to allow 5Hz bandwidth but did not work. Thanks a lot.

If you are supplied a router then the TC has to be in bridge mode.. that is router bridge..
Open the airport utility and make sure in the dhcp and NAT section you have it set to bridge.
Then you can set fixed channels to the wireless that are different to the bell router.. or turn off wireless altogether.. you can still access the TC via the bell router.

  • Why does my iPhone 3Gs stall and then the signal Drops?

Over the past couple of weeks, several times a day, when I am using my iPhone - normally an app, but sometimes declining a call, I can tell the app (or phone) sort of stalls and then immediately all of my bars disappear and I totally lose me signal. Then it says "Searching..." in the upper left-hand corner and maybe after 1 or 2 minutes, it picks up the signal again.
This is getting annoying. I am quite sure it is not a network problem since no one else on the area is experiencing the same thing. It happens on multiple apps, so my guess it is with the phone. I really do not think it is with the SIM card...
Any one have the same problem? I've looked online for posts about similar problems and have found nothing.

Actually, what's probably happened is the signal dropped, the phone is having trouble dealing with it, eventually gives up and then updates the signal icon to show it's dropped.
It's common in networking that apps don't handle certain types of networking problems well or rely on the network layer which may be too aggressive in re-trying before telling the calling app there's a problem. This is tricky stuff whether a computer plugged into a network jack or Wi-Fi or cell tower.
If it happens to you everywhere then drop by Apple but it might just be happening in certain areas due to a cell tower problem.

  • The signal drops every time i lock the screen.

I have a wierd problem with my Iphone5. The signal drops every time i lock the screen. It seems to happening only when the battery is under 20%.. After i restart my iphone the problem disapear, but after a time it happends again. I have ios 6.0.2. Anybody help?

When the phone goes into sleep mode (screen locked), after a few seconds of inactivity, the wifi will disconnect. This is by design to help further battery life. Once you wake the phone up, it connects. Nothing wrong with the phone, working like it is supposed to. The only way to wifi connected all of the time is to have the device connected to power.

  • We use one windows machine and two mbp's (post 2012) at home. We have a modem *** router from a  non apple vendor that airport utility finds and connects with absolute ease. But doesn't stay connected. The signal drops often, what can I do?

We use one windows machine and two mbp's (post 2012) at home. We have a modem *** router from a  non apple vendor that airport utility finds and connects with absolute ease. But doesn't stay connected. The signal drops often, what can I do?

No, not all network clients -- only the two mac portables and they run together very rarely. The windows machine is hardwired to the modem router combo, and that's always sailing smooth. The mbp that is most used is perhaps 20 feet max from the router - and in another room. But it also happens when I take in into the same room as the router. On occassion, I have noticed while using network diagnostics, that one digit in the IP number sometimes appears to go awry. I then try to set up manually - and it works for a bit but is hugely erratic.
I rigged a hand me down airport express and set up a separate network for the two macs and it ran beautifully for some weeks, but that little piece is now dead and none of the retailers in my suburb seem to have one in stock. I don't want to be forced to buy an airport extreme and here in India, there's no trustworthy online ordering option.
The man from the ISP's been here several times and I don;t think it is a modem/dsl issue because the smartphone connects and the macbook drops when both are the same distance from the router? I am truly foxed and intensely irritated! :-(

  • Signals drop on iPhone 5s iOS 8.1 both wifi and network

I am having the following problems since i updated to iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5s 16GB model A1533 :
1- My network signals drop to 3 dots and sometimes to 2 and stay there.
2- Sometimes my wifi disconnects itself on my iphone for almost 4 or 5 seconds
3- My battery is draining faster that ever. I turned off the use of fingerprint and found it useful but still my iphone consumes a lot of battery. I get my battery percentage dropped to 80% from 100% in just 20minutes of whatsapp usage. My fone's vibration is never on. Location services all off except find my iphone. Background app refresh also off. I tried everything. Erase all settings, hard reset etc. NO USE
4- Playing games is really difficult. Battery drains very fast.
I did not have these problems on 7.1.2. Need help
    Regards,
    Ahmad

I understand that but I hope that people from Apple will be referring to the support groups and may actually think about that last paragraph.

  • Why does my signal drop every time I try to use an application.

I've got a UFO style 802.11g, which I unfortunately kept up to date with the updates.
For well over a year now I've had my gear set up like this, airport in the den, my wife's older Imac in the den with it, the printer in the den as well and my Imac across the house. Now, everything in the den connects like cake. Always up, always a great signal.
My Imac across the house has always had it's ups and downs, we've got a stone fireplace and out kitchen in between. Basically, it's 3 rooms away. A whole bunch of walls and corners for the signal to bounce off of. So, I know, not an ideal set up. But it's worked ok for a good long time.
So, a few months ago I performed the recommended update. It said that it would increase connection quality. So I thought, hey, this might help me out! At first glance my connection seemed great! I never lost a bar, not while I was looking anyway. Then I started noticing that occasionally I switch a webpage or some such and it would tell me that I wasn't connected to the internet. What? I look up and I've got all the bars, so I try again and get through... then I notice the bars just flat out go dead. Now I can't connect again. Odd.
Ok, so I start paying attention and it just drops out at random... now, the signal used to fluctuate up and down fairly regularly before the update. I'd researched the problem and found out all the things that can interrupt my signal, and basically I've got em all in between my Airport and my Imac. I could live with that, because it would slow down, but it stayed connected for the most part. This was something new.
Ok, back to the problem at hand. Now I see the signal is either all bars or none. No 2 bars, no 3 bars. Here or gone. And while I'm paying attention, I notice that practically every time I click on something, from my mail app to a preview image the signal drops to nothing. Seemed a coincidence at first, but know I'm certain that it isn't.
So, random complete signal loss and complete signal loss when I use and app. Really not pleased.
Ok, so I figured maybe there's a fix on the way, but I've heard nothing of it. I installed the most recent update, absolutely no effect. Oh, and this one too was supposed to provide better connectivity. Where? I'm not seeing it! Everything in the den works just as well as it ever has. That's one of the things I've loved about Mac for more than 10 years. Easy to use and reliable. But this, this is just a big old pain.
I've tried to extend the network unsuccessfully with the Express. I've got another option to try with that, so my fingers are crossed. But I just don't get why my network is now worse than when I set it up when the only change that's been made have been the updates that I installed at Apple's insistence that my signal would actually be better.
Sorry for being so long winded, and for anyone who made it this far... is there anything that I can do? I really do prefer to have my office in the room that it's in, but it doesn't help me at all when I have to move my Imac to use it online.

This may sound stupid, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway. Is it possible, that if I have enough junk on my desktop it might disrupt the signal? It seems odd, but it kind of looks like my signal is strong and relatively steady now that I've cleaned my desktop. I do tend to get very cluttered. I use a lot of reference images and save text clippings to use later... it just piles up very quickly.
So, I wonder if all that extra effort my system has to do keeping up with the junk might have something to do with the drop outs?

  • Why does my signal drops and takes a long time to search and connect when I turn on or off my cellular data? And normal text messages are not getting delivered properly. It shows sent but later it will show try again, Is it just me?

I do not know what the problem is, but after the latest update it is really hard to send text messages. It is taking alot of time to send the messages, it is not the problem with the carrier because sending text messages with the same number in the same area is really easy on my normal nokia 1100. Please suggest me what I should check. Second problem I am facing is the carrier signal drops to nothing when I turn on the cellular data. It has to then search for the network and connect again the same happens when I turn the data off again. Please tell a solution. I do not think it is the problem with the hardware because the phone is hardly 2weeks old and everything was working properly with ios 6. It initaly had problem with the battery on updating to ios7 but that was rectified with the new update but again these are the new issues am facing.

  • Late 2012 mac mini display signal drops while booting and monitor goes to sleep

I have a new Late 2012 Mac Mini.  I have had it for a week, what just started happening is that during restart, the video signal drops and my monitor goes to sleep.  I then have to toggle through the input options on the monitor and the video signal is detected again and the monitor wakes up.
Here is what I see - If i shut down and then power back up, I get the grey screen, then the apple logo, then the little status circle spins for a few cycles then stops and then the screen goes black and the monitor says signal lost and then 5 seconds later goes to sleep.
It is possible it is my monitor but, I haven't had any issues with it and i only drops the signal like that during a reboot.

Welcome to the family. Search this forum for the main thread for this problem titled: "mac mini 2012 video blinking out".

  • Phone signal drops and says 'searching...' no idea what to do

Half way through calls or after calls the phone signal drops and i can't get it back unless i switch on and off numerous times. THis has been gong on to a greater or lesser degree since I got the phone a year ago but has got much worse recently.
i have tried resetting all settings, as per the o2 advice. They have told me to go to the apple store but I am not hopeful that they will help and as it is a long way I don't want a wasted journey. I have swapped sims/ phones with my partner who has a 3g iphone and he doesnt have the same problem so it is not related to where i am geographically or my sim. any ideas?

I have the same problem after I have update my iPhone 3G to iOS 4.1.
Immediately after the update my simcard was demagnetized (it was unusable). So I had to buy a new sim card but after a couple of day more times a day the sigal drops down and I have to switch off/on.
My iphone has never had any problems untill the update.
    My operator is Vodafone Italia.

  • Keynote video signal drops out

Keynote 4 video signal drops out during presentations where we are switching between two different Apple Computers (one G4 and one Intel). Both machines had previous versions of Keynote on them and over a period of time never had a signal drop out condition. Sounds like new version problem.
    Any input appreciated.

I have two laptops each with their video out adapter connected and then cabled to a switch box where the big monitors project the signal of the laptop that the swtich box is set to. Like channel selection. Previous versions of Keynote were never a problem and I mean never. The signal came right through but now with Keynote 4 the signal drops out even tho the laptop is still active and apparently sending a signal through its video out connection. I have to hit escape and get out of keynote and then go back to PLAY for keynote to once again send that signal.

  • Ipad 2 signal dropping after visit to genius bar??

How is that possible.  I was concerned about the bleeding that I never addressed and now my wifi signal drops.  I've tried to restore, turn off wifi, change to airplane mode and

Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
Then restart your iPad>    Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
BTW, Airplane Mode disables Wi-Fi >  iOS: Understanding airplane mode
If nothing above helped try here >  Apple - Support - iPad - Wi-Fi

  • Airplay video signal drops

We have 7 Apple TV's throughout our company and all of them exhibit the same behaviour, on many different laptops.
All laptops are running minimum of OS 10.9.2.
We have a Cisco Clean Air WiFi network with excellent signal coverage in all areas surrounding each of the AirPlay devices.
    Here's exactly what happens:
User will enter conference room with Apple TV connected to an LED Flat Panel TV.  Power it up, then select the appropriate Airplay device from their Airplay menu and begin streaming mirroring their desktop to the television set.  Within 2 minutes, the signal drops, forcing the user to re-select the airplay device once again.  Usually it will drop again within 2 minutes.
If the user reboots the Apple TV, the issue will go away for the rest of the session.  Perhaps something about the Apple TV's keeping a sustained connection to our WiFi network.
We've been working with Cisco to pour over our WiFi network but they cannot find anything from the WiFi gear that is contributing to the signal loss.
Anyone have any ideas here?  I'd like to try an Apple TV alternative to see if a different device would have the same issue but the options seem extremely limited.
    Thank you.
