So, is a -5V pin supply still required for MSI K8N SLI Platinum or not ???

I am looking to buy a new custom made computer. I want the MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard for it. The problem is that the non-USA page claims that it requires the -5V pin supply. I have read many threads on this same topic, but havent found a definitve answer.
Is the -5V rail still needed or not ???
I read somewhere that USA models dont require it, as its not mentioned on the USA site. Well my one will most probably be from Taiwan.....
Is there a check, through which I can confirm whether the motherboard my local hardware store is selling, requires a -5V pin supply or not???
lastly, is that a specific model number, from which onwards, the requirement is no longer needed ????
thanx in advance

I agree with SAB only because mine has been rock solid for quite some time.  If I could afford it, I would have purchased SAB's PC Power & Cooling 510 model.
The only other model that seems to have the -5v rail are the OCZ psu.  However, I have noticed a lot of users with tagan's and have yet to see someone complain about this psu.  Im running the 12v rail as a single rail at 30a...you can experiment with the dual rails and it will adjust to the need of your mobo up to 20a on each rail but then the other rail gets only 10a (at least I think thats how it works).
The tagan 480w u22 was built for the future:
1.  has a 20/24 pin main power connector - shielded
2.  a 4/8 pin cpu power connector - shielded
3.  2 - 6pin vga connectors - shielded
4.  4 - sata hdd connectors
5.  Whisper quiet - you just dont hear it
6.  12v rail at 30a - peak load at startup to 35a for 60 seconds
7.  70% to 73% efficiency rating
Is it enough juice?  It seems to me that the manufacturers have realized that pretty soon we will have to purchase $500 psu's just to keep up.  So IMO, the manufacturers seem to be getting the point.  The new 90nm AMD chips take less power than the 130nm chips...and the new 7800gt video cards take up less power than the 6800gt video cards.  In the future, AMD will be coming out with a 65nm chip, which will need even less power.
So I think Im right at the sweet spot with the 12v@30a and its also flexible enough to switch to a dual rail system if I need that feature in the future.  Tagan does make a 530w and 580w psu too, but they are not as quiet and you only get 2 more amps on the 12v rail as you go up the line.  Just my 2 cents.

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

Whenever attempting to install, I get the error message : "THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE. I thought this was an issue with the new version, and attempted to retrieve/install older versions of Itunes and same issue occurs. I have tried other forums and resolution tips from : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3551 and nothing still. It appears that apple installs bonjour and nothing else. • Itune 10.5 (64-bit) A program required for this install to complete could not be found...help!

Attempted to update Itunes to 10.5 (64-bit) tonight.  About 20 seconds after it begins installing, it pauses and gives the following message,"There is a problem with this windows installer package.  A program required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor."  Then, it backs out.
I got on the Apple support pages and after reading some posts decided to delete the appData/Local/Temp directory as instructed, but to no avail.  This was not easy because windows cannot delete the file "FXSAPI Debuglogfile.txt" I was able to go through features and turn off document printing, which allowed me to delete the file....all to no avail.  After this, tried uninstalling my current Itunes version, and then installing the new version, but that did not work either.  Can't Apple include the prgrams required to install this new itunes update?  Do not understand and am frustrated.  I've spent several hours and would apprciate some help.  Seems everytime Apple comes out with an new Itunes version there are problems!!!

    I had the same prob..
I tried repaiering Itunes 10.4 as described above - no effect. Then I deinstalled 10.4 completly.
Reinstalling 10.5 did not work after that.
Then I tried repairing "apple Software update" in control panel.
Now I could also install 10.5 - and all old data still there.
Hence - The problem seems to be in "Apple Software Update" Software

I had itunes set up and working since i have had my iPhone and iPad. One day it asked to be updated, so i did. After it updated it stopped working because whenever i tried to open it it would say "this shortcut has either been deleted or moved would you like to delete this shortcut". This kept on happening so I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it, but then comes my second problem. While itunes is downloading an error pops up saying "There is a problem with this windows installer package A program required for this install to complete could not be run contact your personnel or package vendor". This is my main problem and i don't know how to stop it i have tried a disc clean up, De frag and trying to completely take everything to do with itunes off my computer, but it still doesn’t work. Whenever I try to update iTunes to 10.5 I get the message 'There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.'
I then uninstalled iTunes to try and reinstall it but I still get the same message for both 10.5 and previous versions, please help!

    My situation:
    - get error when updating iTunes from 1041 to 1050 or above: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
My system: XP SP3 with all latest updates.
Found out that the 1051 update fixes a major intrusion possibility during the update process, so I want to get iTunes upgraded to 1051.
Did more research and the following worked (not known if all steps outlined were necessary) (I do not guarantee success nor any more issues as a result):
    - ran: MicrosoftFixit.ProgramInstallUninstall.exe (did JUST the patch option).
    - ran: Windows Installation Removal Tool.exe (uninstalled JUST the iTunes program installer folder) (this does not remove the actual program).
    - removed all apple software update registry entries.
    - removed: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple\Installer Cache\(JUST the software updatefolders) (hidden folder).
    - removed: C:\Documents and Settings\current user\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple\(JUST the software  update folders) (hidden folder).
    - DID NOT need to restart
    - downloaded latest iTunes update (1051)
    - opened using WinRAR
    - extracted all files
    - ran JUST the apple software update MSI
    - it succeeded
    - ran JUST the iTunes MSI
    - it succeeded
    - normally I then uninstall the apple software update program, but DID NOT this time
    - DID NOT need to restart
    Hope it works for you.

I have Wondows Vista... I tried to upgrade to Itunes 10.5, and received an error orginially stating that I was trying to install a version older than the one I had.  I uninstalled all of itunes, and now I'm getting the error  message "there is a problem with this windows installer package.  Aprogram required for this install to complete could not be run.
Help!  I have an IPhone, and I would like to get my Itunes upgraded so I can download the new Iphone software...
    Thanks!

I have been in touch with Apple support in reference to my problem. We went through every solution available, and found no fix. The tech then suggested I contact Microsoft concerning this issue. I thought that suggestion was just to get me pointed somewhere but Apple. Boy was I wrong!! I contacted Microsoft, and was directed to a free download called Microsoft Fix. This program fixed something in the regisitor, and wala everything was fixed!! I now have I-Cloud and I-Tunes loaded and working well. So, if you can't install Apple Software and are running Window 7 you might give Microsoft Fix a try, it fixed my problem.....

  • I am trying to upload itunes 10.5, but get a message "There is a problem with this Window Installer Pkg. A program required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor".  What is it I need to do?

I am trying to install itunes 10.5, but during the download I get the following message, "There is a problem with this Window Installer Package.  A program required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personanal or package vendor."  If this is my personal computer and was able to upgrade to the previous version (pre 10.5), why not now?  What is my "package vendor"? And what is it I need to do to fix this?  The message is unclear.  Unfortunately, I deleted my itunes program, thinking that in doing so, 10.5 would finally load.  Now I have no itunes on my computer and unable to sync my iphone.  Help!
    Thanks - Rick

    Hi Rick,
by "repair" I mean I went to the control panel, option - programs and features, and in the list of all my installed programs I selected "Apple Software Update". On top of the screen you find the options Uinstall, Change and Repair. I clicked the repair button and that did the trick. After the repair I could uninstall the program. I also uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support en Bonjour, thus all Apple programs. Then I installed iTunes 10.5 again and everything went fine.
    Success,
    Peter

  • "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed..."

I realize my explanation of my problem is long-winded, so if you want a shortened version, here it is:
I've followed all the instructions trying nearly everything, and no matter what I do, iTunes gives me the error saying: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software." My G5 iPod (60GB) works on two other computers (both without any music on them), so I assume there something wrong with my computer and not the iPod itself.
Now for the long-winded story of the last eight hours of my life...
I just got the Generation-5 iPod Video (60GB) a today and I'm having problems already. I followed the instructions and installed the iPod software and then plugged in my iPod (iTunes has been on my computer for a while now). I was expecting iTunes to open after plugging in the iPod, but my device manager only detected and installed "a new device". I manually opened iTunes and got an error saying: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
After re-installing the iPod software and iTunes, and restarting my computer countless times, I came looking for help here. I found this page, which seemed to outline my problem exactly. My computer recognizes the iPod as a drive, but iTunes won't have anything to do with it. I have all the symptoms outlined in the heading, so I hoped to solve my problem there. I followed the instructions step-by-step, and after the final restart, I open iTunes to get the same exact error message.
I decided to determine whether there was a problem with my iPod or if it was my computer. I plugged my iPod into my uncles's powerbook, and got to the point where I can name and configure my iPod. I expected it to work flawlessly on a Mac (which it did) but there is no way for me to continue using a Mac (after tomorrow) for my iPod. This formatted the iPod for a Mac, so I went to another (different from the original) Windows computer, clean of any iTunes and iPod software, and followed the instructions exactly as they're supposed to be followed. After the installations, I plugged in my iPod, and although iTunes didn't open, I was able to format back to Windows and name my iPod (a step in the right direction). I should note that my (anti-iPod) computer is a Windows XP Pro, and the working one is Windows XP Home Edition. This was all well and good, until I remembered there was no music on this computer. So my iPod is completely working there, but there isn't anything I can do with it.
Next, I came back here and browsed around the discussion boards, hoping to find somebody with a similar problem to mine. There seems to be alot of errors concerning iTunes not recognizing the iPod, but none of the solutions I tried worked for me, including changing the drive letter. I get the "iPod Service Error" while trying to restore to factory settings through iPod updater.
Of course, I could transfer all 32GB of music from one computer to another, but the second (working) computer isn't mine and I won't have access to it in a couple months. It would be most convenient if I could get my iPod working on my own computer. Any help would be appreciated, especially from somebody who has solved this problem or know how to solve this problem.
    P.S.
Here are some other minor details that my be important, but I didn't feel they were worth including.
    - My brother has his iPod mini set up on my computer, under a different user login. He gets the same error once in a while, but re-installing iTunes always solves the problem for him. I had him try solving my problem his way, but nothing worked for him either.
    - My computer is an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+, 512MB RAM with Windows XP Pro SP2 installed. My internal hard drive is partitioned, using the letters C, D and H (C being my system files, D used for recovery files and H for my applications and games). My E drive is used as a DVD/CD-ROM Drive, and drives F and G are reserved for virtual drives (none have been running during this entire ordeal). My external hard drive uses the letter I, and I manually set my iPod to use the letter J (I've never used 'J' for anything else before).
    - Yes, I have downloaded and installed the latest versions of iTunes and the iPod software.
    - I'm assuming there is a problem with my computer and not my iPod, since it worked on both other computers I tried. I'm hoping it's as simple as changing a registry file or cleaning out (yet another) temp directory.

Solution to "Software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed"!
I battled this same problem for about 5 hours. Going through re-installations, the "5 R's", all these discussion boards. Nothing worked.
The problem is that iPodService was repeatedly crashing after minute or so. You can verify this by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Delete and noting that iPodService is missing from the process list (sort by image name), or by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting "Manage", then going to Services and checking out the IPodService service - if it gives you the option to "Start", then it's not running.
    Here is what worked.
    1. De-install iTunes and iPod (if you have the updater installed) completely by going to Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs. Also delete the C:\Program Files\iTunes and c:\Progam Files\iPod\bin directories. (Don't worry, this doesn't affect your saved music files.)
    2. Log in as an Administrator
    3. Go into the registry (note this is dangerous - you should be careful) and remove the iPod entries that the uninstaller misses.
3.1 Go to Start menu --> Run.
    3.2 Type in "regedit".
    3.3 Go to HKEYCLASSESROOT --> IPodService.iPodManager.
There are two keys here, iPodManager and iPodManager.1. In my case, I did not have permission to view either of these. I think this is the root cause of the problem. I think the installer can't properly update these because it doesn't have permission. So you need to change the permissions:
    3.4 Right-click on IPodService.IPodManager
3.4.1 Select "Permissions..." A warning will appear saying you don't have permission, but that you can change permissions.
3.4.2 On the window that launches, click on "Advanced..."
3.4.3 Click on the "Owner" tab.
3.4.4 Select a valid account (the one you're logged in under) under "Change Owner To".
    3.4.5 Hit "OK".
3.4.6 Back on the main Permissions window, hit Add and add the same account as a valid user.
3.4.6.1 Where it says "Enter the object names to select", type in the account name, e.g. "Smith".
3.4.7 Click on the "Allow" checkboxes for "Full Control" and "Read".
    3.4.8 Hit "OK".
3.5 Repeat procedure for the "iPodManager.1" key.
3.6 Now right-click and delete both of these keys.
I think that's all that's required, but I also searched through the registry and deleted the following keys.
    4. Other keys I deleted:
    4.1 HKEYCLASSESROOT --> IPodManager.IPodManagerUI.1
4.2 HKEYLOCALMACHINE --> SOFTWARE --> Apple Computer Inc. --> iPod
I think that's all I deleted, but I'm not positive. I seached for instances of "ipod" using the Find... and Find Next functions under the Edit menu.
    5. Exit out of the registry editor.
    6. Re-install iTunes. I re-installed iTunes and reconnected the iPod, and everything worked.
I want to repeat that editing the registry can completely mess up your computer if you modify the wrong things, so only do this if you're comfortable, and be extremely careful.
    Hopefully this helps!
Apple support people: assuming this works, please add it to your solutions page, and feel free to reimburse me for spending half of Christmas figuring this out.
