So is it okay to navigate using safari version 5.1.10 or should I download FireFox?

I have an old iMac from early 2006 and I am on Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Is it secure to navigate using safari version 5.1.10, does java protection works for this version of safari, or should I immediately download and start using Mozilla FireFox? Thanks for your support.

You may find a lot of sites don't work well with that version of Safari. Gmail will certainly complain, for example. Yes, I'd start using Firefox.

    I have problems saving pdf files in the web when I use Safari.  I don't have this problem with firefox.

    do they save ok if Safari - Preferences - Security - Allow all other plug-ins is unchecked ?
    If so, likely an adobe or other pdf plugin
    Re-check the setting above & quit any browsers,
    Look in this folder by triple-clicking the line below, then ctrl-clicking it & choosing Services - Open
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    remove anything with pdf in the filename & test again
    Sometimes, plug-ins can be in the User Library folder :
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

    Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4 and later.
    You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
    To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
    If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
    *Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
    *Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
    *Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

  • HT1222 My IPad currently is using IOS version 7.0.3  I tried to download 7.0.4 and am unable to.  The IPad function to download .0.4 just continues to run.  I would delete it if I could, but it doesn't permit me to do that.

    My IPad is currently using IOS version 7.0.3.  I am trying to download 7.0.4 and am unable to do so.  The screen says "downloading", but nothing is happeniing.  It also continues to say "Estimating time remaining........" and never changes.  I would like to delete and start over or whatever, but am unable to do so.Any suggestions?

    Unfortunately I tried that and it didn't work. Thanks for the help though. I tried to uninstall and it said I couldn't because the file is corrupt or something, but I think I finally got it uninstalled and/or deleted or whatever, but now I try to reinstall/download it again from the beginning and I can't. No matter what I do I can not get Firefox working again. No matter how many times I try to redownload it. Any other suggestions?

  • I currently have a Mac OSX 10.5.8 an am using Safari version 5.0.6 as my web browser. I am getting messages saying that the web browser is outdated. I cant update to Safari 6 because my computer is not OSX 10.7 or higher. Suggestions?

    Updating an outdated Safari browser when your computer is not compatible for the next version of the product.

    Purchase the Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple
    Install that then update to 10.6.8
    Once there you can then purchase 10.7 or if your Mac will run it upgrade to 10.10 for free.
    Start with a backup.

  • Computer slows down while downloading files using Safari version 4.0.3

    I experience some performance issues while downloading files from the internet.
    The system performance/responsiveness is perfect until starting the download process.
    E.g. opening the finder takes noticeably more time.
    However, the worst is moving the mouse (bluetooth mighty mouse). It's hard to explain, but during a download there's a lag which could be compared to decreasing the mouse sensitivity to a minimum.
    Maybe someone could help me with that...
    Thanks a lot!

    HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Check to see how much free drive space there is on the MacBook.
    Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*
    If you need to free up disk space, go here for help.
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html
    Could be an underlying issue with the hard disk. Boot from your install disk and run Disk Utility.
    Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
    Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
    Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
    Select First Aid in the Main panel.
    *(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
    Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
    If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
    If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
    When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
    Select your start up disk and click Restart

  • Should I download Firefox 5 using Windows 7 64 bit or wait until Firefox supports the 64 bit version?

    why are u asking me to upgrade to Firefox 5 that does not support Windows 7 64 bit?

    Download or continue with the 32 bit version of Firefox to run on your 64 bit Windows 7 system.
    The 64 bit Firefox is just for testing Firefox, you would not be able to use the plug-ins you normally use as they are not available.

  • Error message when using Safari

    When trying to open a link online (using Safari version 7.0.1), I receive this error message: javax.servlet.ServletException: A problem occurred while instantiating controller and handling request. Does anyone know how to resolve this? This issue only occurred after I got the new Maverick operating system.
    Also listed on the error page are:
    Cannot serve request to /continuing-studies/courses/caba/business-analysis-fundamentals.html on this server
    ApacheSling/2.2 (Day-Servlet-Engine/4.1.24, Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 1.6.0_45, Linux 2.6.32-358.6.2.el6.x86_64 amd64)

    Thanks for this  - I tried viewing the same site on a different computer and the same error messages were present, so I'm satisfied that the issue has nothing to do with me, my upgrades or my security settings.

  • Long lags and delays using Safari

    Over the past few months I've noticed a significant increase in the amount of time I spend waiting for Safari to do things. The program regularly hangs or freezes up while it's evidently thinking about things. I'm pretty fed up with it and I'm finding myself using Firefox more and more. In browsing the forums it doesn't seem like a widespread problem, although I know of other users who are having similar issues.
    Auto-Fill was brutally slow, so I've turned that functionality off completely.
    RSS was rumored to create some significant delays, so I've turned RSS updating off.
    I reset Safari. I emptied the cache. I deleted form values, downloads.plist, and com.apple.Safari.plist. I've repaired disk permissions.
    Basically, I've done everything I can think of to no avail.
    There are two specific actions which consistently stop Safari in its tracks:
    1) When I begin typing a URL into the address bar, Safari tries to guess at what I'm typing. Unfortunately, it seems like parsing that list takes 10-15 seconds for Safari. I could easily finish typing in that delay but Safari locks up while it's thinking. This is really irritating - especially since "Auto-Fill" is set to off.
    2) Safari hangs for roughly 20 seconds whenever I click the red button in the upper left side of the window to close the window. This gives me a spinning ball until it's done doing whatever it's doing.
    What am I missing?
    Here's my configuration:
    MacBook Pro 2.4ghz Intel Core Duo 2
    2GB RAM
    OS X 10.4.10
    I'm currently using Safari version 3.0.3 (522.12.1) but I noted the same issues in Safari 2 as well.
    Thanks in advance. I welcome any suggestions.

    Thanks. Interestingly, it seems like I may have resolved my problem. I cleared my Java cashes and suddenly my spinning ball-o-death has disappeared. I'm intrigued.
    For others with this problem, give this a shot:
    Go to Applications/Utilities/Java and run your Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings.app and Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings.app
    Empty your Java cashes and see if you notice a change.
    I'm surprised that resetting Safari or running Cocktail doesn't clear these cashes. Still, it seems to have fixed things for me.
    Honestly, if Safari really needs as much constant maintenance to run well as all these posts suggest, maybe they should set the app up to do some of these steps automatically on start up. Anyway, I'm gonna mark this as answered for now and see if the fix sticks.

  • Can't download using Safari

    Been a mac user for 15+ years, but this glitch(?) has me all twisted. Where to start! This all seemed to have started when I started having problems with iTunes/Store and I likely have made matters worse by trashing files I shouldn't have. Not real sure what exactly happened, but it's a real brain twister this time around. Been battling with this for most of the weekend, and have tried everything I can think of. Backed into a corner now! For instance, I trashed (don't ask me why??) the X509 anchors in my keychain which has only added to the problems, and now I've lost all my pw's.
    I reinstalled OSX 10.4.2, creating a previous system folder, and spent the day updating updating back to 10.4.11 which hasn't helped at all. I haven't been able to even start up my Firefox or download any file via Safari. This was before or after the reinstall. I have a wireless broadband/pc card and barely have a connection. Tomorrow I'm suppose to get an upgraded cd with the driver seeing as I can't download via Verizon's website using Safari. No matter what I try to download it will only make it to 8.2mb and state it can't create a file.
    I need serious help and would appreciate any and all suggestions!

    as a guess, if you have external FireWire hard drive, install everything - OS, apps, updates etc. on to the external drive and boot from it.
    if PowerBook works from the external, could be hardware issue
