So many copies of photos

Why does iPhoto have so many copies of my pictures? I have found the same photo's in three folders. The first two folders are Original and Modified, which seem to be self explanatory, then there is another folder called Data. That means that iPhoto has three copies of most of my pictures, assuming that I modified them. This seems to apply to even simple rotation of images.
Is this correct? How can I keep so many copies from being kept in different places?

The Data folder files are the thumbnail files that iPhoto uses for smaller rendering of the pictures. Any photo that gets edited, including those which have been auto-rotated by the camera, will get a copy created in the Modified folder. Unless you edit all of your photos, you'll usually only have one full sized version and a thumbnail of each photo. It's the nature of the beast. You can't change it.
What with the low cost of additional HDs, photo storage shouldn't be a problem these days like it used to be.

  • How many copies of 10.2.8 can I have on one HDD? To partition or not to ...

    Hi,
I hope that this makes sense to those who read it. If, it doesn't then, please - someone say so. In case some of you recognize my monicker it has been a good while since I visited and asked for help.
Kappy, I didn't understand everything - had some health issues thus, I couldn't followup?
I have finally installed my Seagate internal, thus my return visit.
I have just installed a Seagate Barracuda 7200, 120 GB HDD. I've made it my master drive. I've partitioned it into four parts. 1) for OS 10.2, 2) for 10.3, 3) for 10.4 and 4) for OS 9. I have not yet put it to use. I made my original Deskstar 40GB the slave, it has three partitions. 1) for 10.2, 2) for OS 9 and legacy 3rd party apps and 3) for photos and videos. I also have an Maxtor One-Touch II External 300 GB FW for backup. Long story - it has 4 partitions, 1) 10.2, 2) 10.3 and .4, 3) for video and photo storage and 4) for OS 9.
    I have several questions.
    1) How many copies of OS 10.2.8 can I have on any one drive - is my Seagate and my Deskstar now considered to be one drive?
1b) Can I have OS 10.2.8 (on both? of them)?
1c) Can I have 10.2.8 on that/both of those drives without causing conflicts or any other problems?
    2) I've been reading through the discussions to see if I could find an answer to any of these questions. What I did find was several different topics that include references about not partitioning new drives.
2a) What are the advantages to partitioning and what are the potential problems/disadvantages created by partitioning a new HDD?
2b) Isn't it necessary to partition a HDD if I'm going to have 10.2, 10.3(maybe), 10.4 and OS 9 all on the same HDD?
2c) Aren't there going to be conflicts especially because of OS 9 and 10.4 being on the same partition?
I will appreciate all replies, corrections, suggestions and requests for clarifications and/or request for additional info.
    Thanks,
    J Ivan
P.S. I'm now going to bed and I won't be back on-line until late this afternoon.

You cannot have more than one copy of OS X on a single volume (partition), but you can install any number of versions of OS X on separate volumes (partitions.)

2a) What are the advantages to partitioning and what are the potential problems/disadvantages created by partitioning a new HDD?
There are no inherent advantages to partitioning in general except that it may provide a convenient means for organization. However, if you desire to install multiple operating systems, partitioning is necessary to keep each OS separate and to enable you to use OPTION booting. The exception to this is installing OS X and OS 9 on the same volume.
2b) Isn't it necessary to partition a HDD if I'm going to have 10.2, 10.3(maybe), 10.4 and OS 9 all on the same HDD?
    Yes. See previous answers.
2c) Aren't there going to be conflicts especially because of OS 9 and 10.4 being on the same partition?
No. And there would be no problems having OS 9 and 10.4 on the same volume. If they are on the same volume you simple cannot use OPTION booting to switch between them.

  • So many folders, with so many copies

I recently upgraded to iPhoto 6, and I've noticed that I've now got several copies of each picture. I'm on a PowerBook G4, and the multiple copies are really eating up my HD. I'm in the process of transferring the entire library to another computer (and not iphoto), but I'm using a 2GB flash drive, and it's a long and painful process. I'm trying to figure out why I have so many copies, and if there's anything I can do to decrease the number of copies.
Currently my iphoto library has five folders of years (out of nine), a Data folder, which looks like it has the entire library, a Found folder, with only a few photos, the cache folder, a Modified folder, which appears to have far more photos than I've actually modified (though I suppose I could believe that I've rotated that many), and an Originals, which seems to have everything. Do I need the year folders in the base directory? Do I need a Data, and an Originals? Is there any way to have fewer copies of these pictures? I know I'm not supposed to just start deleting willy nilly (something I learned from screwin' up my itunes...), but it really seems like this isn't all necessary. I'm up to nearly 8GB in photos, and I don't really have that many, and most of them are not that huge.
Also, if I delete a photo in iphoto, will it remove every copy of that photo from the machine? If not, how do I go about doin' this? I needs my space. I can barely copy a folder these days.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I don't suppose there's a way to limit the number of additional copies made?
No - iPhoto always keeps the original and a thumbnail and if you make any modifications of any sort a modified version (only the latest modified version)
When I delete a photo in iphoto, will it delete every copy?
Yes - if you delete from the Roll (deleting from an album only removed the photo from that album) by moving to the iPhoto trash and then emptying the iPhoto trash - the finder is not (and can not be) involved in this process
I've been copying the files directly from a folder just to move them to a PC not using iphoto. I figured that so long as I wasn't going to iphoto, and I wasn't deleting anything, it wouldn't matter.
Sort of - any time you are in the iPhoto library you risk making a error and causing problems so it is not recommended - and it is hard to get the correct version this way since there are originals, thumbnails and possibly modified versions to choose from - if you export from iPhoto you know you have the current version
The photos appear to be transferring completely, but as I intend to delete many of the photos from iphoto once I've backed them all up on the other machine, I would like to make sure I'm doing this properly.
    Again only delete using iPhoto

  • I am trying to import photos into PSE 12 from folders on my desktop, which are organized by broad topics--family, vacations, etc..  Many of my photos are located in several folders.  When I try to import them to PSE I get a message saying some photos were

I am new to PSE 12 and am trying to import my photos from folders on my desktop which I have organized by the categories I had in my previous program (Creative Memories).  Many of my photos are located in multiple folders, i.e. one photo could be in "Family," Vacations" and "Birthdays."  When I try to import the contents of each folder on my desktop I am often getting the message that many of my photos were not imported as they are already in my catalog.  Is there a way that I can import any one photo multiple times so that it ends up in all the folders I want it to be in?  I know I can locate the photo in PSE and copy it to a different folder(s), but there are so many not being imported that this would be a huge task!

By design, the organizer (and any other database management systems) is there to prevent you from duplicating your media files. The catalog management allows you to have the same image in different categories or albums. Duplication in different folders is to be absolutely avoided.
The same image file can have multiple tags like 'family', 'vacations', 'birthdays' and be present in three different albums with the same names. On obvious advantage is less disk space. Another one with your present folder system is that if you edit one of your duplicates, the other ones are unchanged.
I don't see an easy way to make your present folder structure simplified for the organizer ...

I downloaded and installed Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements.  I then launched Photoshop Elements Organizer and imported approx. 28,000 photos (including some videos).  A window opened indicating that many of the photos had tags, and asking if I wanted to add the tags.  I said yes, and the process began.  When it reached 60% a window opened indicating that "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working", with the only option being to "Close program."
I've since tried to open organizer several times, but it goes immediately to "Elements 13 Organizer has stopped working".  I was able to open Editor, and tried opening Organizer from Editor, but encountered the same problem.
FYI, I have an open case (#0214505556), but have not received the help I need.

This issue is with respect to Elements 13.

  • Many copies of a pictures on Iphoto.

    Hello!
I would like to know where I can find more information about using Iphoto. I had to remove all my pictures from Iphoto because there was a mess, many copies of one picture. I deleted some in order to organize them, but they look with low resolution and out of focus.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi tetrozono;
I think you have posted your question in the wrong forum. Since your question is on iPhoto and you are running a Mac Book, you can't be running OS 9. I would suggest that you repost you question over in the iPhoto forum.

  • Double copies of photos

Hi i am finding some problem with my iphone i.e. i installed icloud to my iphone form then onwords in am getting two copies of photos in my picture gallary
one is my camera rool and other two are showing like photo library and the one which i linked to the folder in my PC. both the photo library and my folder which i created in my pc both are having same pics and consuing lot of memory. Later i kept all the options of icloud off in the settings but still it is showing two groups of pics. same with the contacts i am getting the contacts like all contacts and mobile contacts. its became very problem for me with two kinds of contacts. when i save a contact in all contacts its no adding to mobile contacts... can any one help me with this issues will be very helpful for me...

As far as pics,  this is correct and has always been the case.Nothing is wrong.  There are not two copies of the photos.  This is how iphone has always handled photos.
Photo library will always be there and will always give you access to all pics synced to your iphone from your computer.  You can also access those very saem photos ( there are not two copies) from the individual folders that you synced.
    Not sure about contacts.

    Hi,
As the previous comment says, CE1XXXX, CE2XXXX, CE3XXXX and CE4XXXX are created. But this is if you are using Costing-based profitability analysis, However, if you're using account-base PA then no tables are created and CPEP, COSP, COSS and other standard CO tables are used.

  • Since Ios8 many of my photos diappeared!

Two days ago I downloaded iOS8. Today I saw that many of my photos disappeared, and there is no special order in which they disappeared.
    Where are they gone?????????????

Yes, if you know where it is now. Aperture cannot help you find them, only where it last saw them, but if you tell it where they are, it can reconnect them.
