So many pictures not enough space!

Hi! I desperately need more room on my computer so here are some questions;
 1) Does iPhoto duplicate the pictures from my hard-drive or is it just a way to view them?
2) Can I burn a DVD without buying an external DVD burner?
3) Is there a simple way to digitally "dust" my hard-drive to remove all the data/malware/etc that 'falls in the cracks' so to speak? (Without buying or downloading anything else to my computer!)
4) Basically, how can I easily clean off my computer without totally wiping the hard-drive clean?
Computer info:
  Model Name:    MacBook
  Model Identifier:    MacBook4,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
  Processor Speed:    2.1 GHz
  Number Of Processors:    1
  Total Number Of Cores:    2
  L2 Cache:    3 MB
  Memory:    4 GB
  Bus Speed:    800 MHz
  Boot ROM Version:    MB41.00C1.B00
  SMC Version (system):    1.31f1
iOS 10.6.8
iPhoto version 7.1.5
Things I already do (but can't seem to get ahead, barely treading the digital water): Back up to an external HD, but I don't trust it completely, so I also burn pictures and videos to CDs, but this is tedious and time consuming, especially at only 700MB a disk!.
My hard-drive is literally just pictures/videos and basic applications like MS-office (and whatever digital "dust" has fallen in the cracks.) My plan, if I can ever get there, is to only have year (maybe 18mo) of pictures/videos, and move stuff off when I import more on.
(mom of two little ones, so, not much free time, but lots of data!)

1. iPhoto is software to view, organize and edit photos that are stored on your hard drive, opening a photo in iphoto doesn't duplicate it and use more disk space.
2. If your macbook is the one that shipped with a combo drive, no. You would have to buy an external burner.
3. You might consider moving your iPhoto library to an external drive iPhoto: How to move the Library folder to a new location DO NOT....I repeat do not install any software that claims to clean your hard drive. Get rid of any files or applications that you no longer use/need but be careful to not delete any system files. If you're not comfortable doing that then you shouldn't attempt it.
IF your computer shipped with a 120gb hard drive and you haven't upgraded it you should consider that. If you can operate a screwdriver you can do it. Here's a guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Hard+Drive+Replacement/514

eed these probes, what can i do then? You need to tune up the number of probes; see /kernel/drv/fasttrap.conf, and either reboot or run "update_drv fasttrap" after making the changes. The default is 250,000 -- I recommend changing it to 1,000,000. (Indeed, we're considering changing the default to 1,000,000 anyway because so many are running into this limit.)

I tried to import a video into iMovie. Its says their is not enough space on the destination disk. I deleted many projects, and events. Nothing changed. What files do I delete and how?

Hard drive full or near full:
You are going to have to delete, move or archive your data to regain hard drive space.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use. If the app has a dedicated uninstaller, use it to completely uninstall the app. If the app has no uninstaller, then just drag it to the OS X Trash icon  and empty the Trash.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Imovie has not enough space

imovie has not enough space to finalize the project. Not in any small file. Start to export brings me the message "not enough space" close imovie. I have created a trailer and given this to imovie to upgrade this to a bigger project ~ 39 Min.. The project runs in full screen sometime not and has problems to show pictures. in the small viewer is runs. Copy the project to harddisc combine it and so on helps not. I have delete all old projects from imac hd to nas but this brings no success. I have done in the past a project with the same lenght but more photos and not so many movies and this was without any problem. From upgrade to upgrade the imovie runs slower, this is my feeling. My iMac is full of RAM and has definetly enough free space.
Could "again" size reducuction help me.
    Are text files a problem?
I have all iPhoto pic's and movies at nas (1.6GHz) to hold my drive clean, the iphoto libary is at the Mac hd with 900 GB free space.
    What is wrong?
    To long project?
What is the max. lenght of imovie project?

    Hi
    I try a bit.
I have delete all old projects from imac hd to nas but this brings no success.
You are using a Non Destructive video editor = This means that after material is imported/captured to iMovie - it will not be touched at all. AND in iMovie Project (library) there will NOT be any Movie. What You find here is a small text document on HowTo the original imported/capture material is to be viewed (as Your Movie) - it just points and describes. So by deleting the project You'll not gain any noticeable amount of free space at all.
My iMac is full of RAM and has definitely enough free space.
The free space is not in RAM or external hard disks - IT is only the Main Start-Up (Mac OS) Hard Disk that counts and here space is Needed for iMovie/iDVD and Mac OS temp. files. And this space can not be addressed elsewhere.
Could "again" size reducuction help me.
    Most probably not
    Are text files a problem?
    Not that I've heard about.
I have all iPhoto pic's and movies at nas (1.6GHz) to hold my drive clean, the iphoto libary is at the Mac hd with 900 GB free space.
If this is the Main Start-Up Hard Disk and it has > 900Gb free space - then this is more than OK
BUT - pic's and movies at nas (1.6GHz) - this I can not fully interpret - feeling says that's where the problem lies. External storage of VIDEO Must be on a (hfs) formatted hard disk - most other things works on UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange formatted ones - BUT Not Video - Nor for iMovie or FinalCut - Video file breaks up in 4Gb blocks and can not be mended any way I know of. Must be a Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted one and I prefer FireWire.
    What is wrong?
    Most probably the external storage
    To long project?
No - I made projects on several hour's - and with lot's of photos - No I don't think that.
What is the max. lenght of imovie project?
No idea for iM'08 to 11 - iMovie HD6 my record is > 6hour 20 minutes. With no problem.
    Yours Bengt W

  • My Lacie external hard drive will not back up on Time Machine. Says there's not enough space. This has happened with every single external I've purchased. Thought TM was supposed to delete old backups??

My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

  • I have 'not enough space' cursed Pages; even though I have plenty of room it refuses to let me download and install it.

Common problem, except all trouble shooting leads to the suicide of the question asker because it yields only claims that no matter what you say, you need to make MORE space. It's a 30 meg file, I have 500 meg free. I have deleted and redownloaded and rebooted about thirty times, in various combinations.
Previously I have cursed many apps this way, always free apps, so I just accepted they were 'dead' to my phone, even after iOS updates and ever since the iPhone 3 this problem has existed (ie: if you didn't have enough space when you START downloading the first time, kiss that app goodbye for life, it just WILL NOT download EVER.) and will either sit at 'Waiting' for a while then claim there's not enough space, or just sit at 'Waiting' indefinitely and progress no further.
The only thing I haven't tried is formatting the entire thing as a fresh phone and retrying, but that's pretty extreme. Has Apple acknowledged this bugs existance yet? Every support thread I see gets replies of "Make more space." no matter what the asker states and eventually the guy just stops coming back and asking, so they're all pretty much unresolved.
Just for the record, I have extensive experience with technology, and am not mentally disabled, so please feel free to talk to me at the level at which your inner voice talks to you, I assure you I will get it. So, can has halp plz? 8(
(PS: I cannot update to the lates iOS 7 as I do not have the insane size required for it to decompress and install, etc, and to do so would require deleting things I cannot lose or having to back it all up manually because there's no convenient way to do it otherwise. Although I can assure you that this problem has been present since the iPhone 3 first came out which was my first iPhone and has been present in every iOS update since, so I have no reason to believe out of the dozens of updates that iOS 7 has addressed this.)

When you don't have enough storage to perform an operation, then you don't have enough storage.  have you got the 16GB iphone?

  • I get error message: not enough space to download when I try to buy a tv series on Itunes. It tells me to delete photos or videos to make space, but I have no photos and videos. Help?

I get error message: not enough space to download when I try to buy a tv series on Itunes. It tells me to delete photos or videos to make space, but I have no photos and videos. Help?

I would guess that a TV series takes up a fair amount of storage capacity. It is just a standard message I think that may indicate that you are actually running low on storage space.
If you go to Settings>General>About how many GBs are specified as being available?  If you are low on space maybe deleting some apps may help.

  • Trying to build a DVD image, DVDSP4 says not enough space

I have many years' experience using DVD Studio Pro 4, so this hopefully is not a stupid question.
I'm using an iMac with 80gb free and an external HDD with 12gb free.  I have authored a DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.  The project says it's 4.6gb.
I need to make a disc image file of the DVD so I can burn it to DVD media using another computer.  When I do this, it encodes for hours and then says "Formating Failed.  Not enough space of the output media"  (I might be paraphrasing.)
The only possiblt output medias, the iMac and the external drive, both have plenty of space, and the project is under the limit.  So what gives?

Let me try this again, because I think we're not communicating.
I have authored a DVD Studio 4 project with menus and assets, etc.  It simulates just fine.  The tab on the top of the DVDSP screen indicates my project is 4.6gb.  This means I should have no problem turning this project into a DVD.  The computer I'm working on has no DVD burning capabilities so I want to create a disc image of the project instead of burning a DVD.  I have done this before, where DVDSP encodes and builds a file that I can then use Disk Utility to burn to a DVD.  So, once I have my disk image, I will transfer that file to another computer, and use Disk Utility on that second computer to burn the DVD from the disk image.
    NOW
The problem I'm having is that DVDSP is not able to make the disk image.  When I go to "Build/Format", it should make a disk image, but instead, I get an error saying there is not enough space on the output device.  The "output device" in this case is my external Hard drive which has plenty of space.  That is why I am asking for help.

  • I have backed up my ipad to my laptop prior to updating to the latest IOS and now I want to restore the backup back onto the ipad but it says there is not enough space? I have tried unticking all apps i no longer need, music etc but this still doesnt work

I have updated up my ipad2 which had the original version on it (4.??) to the latest version of IOS. Before I did this I backed up the ipad to my laptop so I wouldnt lose precious pics and videos of my baby boy.  Now that the latest version is on the ipad it is now asking me if I want to start as a new ipad or restore my backup from itunes.  So i select restore my backup from itunes and connect to itunes but it now says there is not enough space to do so.  I have a feeling it is because there are alot of pics on our ipad which i presume are all in this backup, many of which we do not need on the ipad anymore but I have no idea on how I go about deleting these pics??  And how do I find where on my laptop this backup is and most importantly the video and pics of my baby boy.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

2.)  How do I remove an album on my ipad?
3.)  i have taken over 1,000 photos on ipad, now it won't sync stuff to the ipad because it said there is not enough space.  I want to delete some past synced photos from the computer to create space, but I don't know how to find it on computer.  It sycned a portion of a file onto the ipad which is useless to me so I want to delete it all & start fresh.
4.)  I was thinking about copying some of those photos over so it would show up as new data maybe then it would sync to my ipad as a new & competed album.  Or will this create more problem because it would only be creating more photos?
5.)  By the way, I don't know how to use dropbox or anything like it, so I take photos of some files & web screen that I use regularly to always have access regardless of internet access.  That is why I have so many photos.  But I want to be able to separate & organized them by files, web screens, or topics.  I also want to be able to delete & update as needed.
6.)  If needed I am willing to delete 4 G of downloaded app to create space.  Will this help the space issue?  Also could I just leave the downloaded app to my computer only & only sync to to ipad as needed, since I don't need app as regularly.  I NEED "photo" ALL of the TIME!  I am out in the field, instead of carrying stack & stack of papers, I carry ipad with photo of these daily needed papers!

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • My 4th gen ipod shuffle no longer selects a subset of my music libary to sync. All I get is not enough space message. Anybody know how to get around this without manually recreating 2 gb playlists?

When syncing my old 1st generation shuffle, itunes would select a subset of my music library. Now all I get is a not enough space message. I cannmot find a way to accomplish this and do not want to keep manually creating 2gb playlists. Does anybody know how to make itunes select songs from the music library?
As usual, Apple Help is of no help.  Thanks

I solved my problem by restoring the shuffle to factory settings on the summary screen. Now it seems to work the way it's supposed to. Many thanks to Apple for zero help, as usual. Apple should direct less resources to developing the next snazzy ipad and more to cleaning up and enhancing itunes. I'll make the same editorial comment about the iphone 4 voicemail options.

It's telling you there's not enough space *on your 4S*.  The 25GB you refer to is probably that on iCloud, that's different memory than that on your iPhone.  You need to delete video, pictures, apps, or whatever ON THE IPHONE, to make enough room for downloading updates to your apps.

  • Time Machine Back Up Not Enough Space

I just tried to back up my Mac Book Air and I use OS X 10.7.3.
I got a message which said that there was not enough space on my external hard drive.   The message said that I needed 50 GB and the external drive only has 43 of space... Note, when I check out the hard drive, it says:  ""Available 43.63 of 249.93".
The sole purpose of my hard drive is for back up purposes.  So,  there isn't anything other data or information on the drive...
    So, what do I do?

To be clear--is this a drive you have been using with the MacBook Air previously with Time Machine?  Or is this the first time you've tried to use Time Machine with this drive on this computer?
If it's not the first time, I suspect you're just getting Time Machine's warning which everyone eventually will get (unless you've turned it off or really don't change many files) that it is going to need to delete something from the drive outside of its normal scheduled elimination of backups (normally it lengthens out the period between saved backups as the backup ages, figuring you don't need every hour's snapshot for the last three years).  By its nature Time Machine's needs tend to grow over time and it will eventually consume all available space on a drive that it is given access to.

  • Nokia 100 (not enough space for new messages)

    Hi!
From time to time i get messages that there is a text message that wants to come through but that there is not enough space. I then delete some inbox messages and then within minutes i get the text. However, recently it has taken much more time for the text to come in after deleting old messages.
And why do i all of the sudden get a message that there is not enough space, then i delete some old messages, and NOTHING comes through? Why am i getting this so-called false alarm from time to time now?
I really hope someone can help me with this problem!
    Thank you!

    Hi Friend,
Much probably that "others" data is taking the most of usage space.
So start to solve this issue deleting text messages.
If the issue persists, connect your iPad with iTunes and check how much space "others" data is taking. try to reset your device by backup in iTunes.
If still not working, I advice you to search ib other foruns. There are many pleople that faced this problem and successfully solve it
    Hope it helps
