So many routers, so little knowledge...

I am very new to wireless or fast internet. I am getting DSL ethernet hooked up in about a week. I was going to just buy a wireless router to be able to connect various computers at one time. However, when I search for routers they confuse the heck out of me. My question is which router would be best for me? I will be wanting to connect my Macbook (airport i believe), my Playstation 3 (wi-fi), and my mom's Dell Laptop (wi-fi). Please help with any information that would help me choose the right one. There are so many and I want to make a smart purchase. So if anyone has a similar setup to mine or anyone just knows a router that would work I would greatly appreciate the feedback. Thanks in advance!

Almost any 802.11G router will work just fine. Apple Airport Extreme will be the easiest to set up and work nicely with Front Row and add the possibility of using a networked drive very simply.
That said, I use the Netgear WGR614 and I love it. It was extremely easy to set up and works very well with my 2 Mac, 3 PC, Wii, and Xbox 360.
The only problem that you will run into - and it is not really a problem - is that the software that they ship with is almost always Windows only. You will need to use your browser to configure it. It is easy to do and if you need any help with it, there are plenty of people here that can guide you through it.

    Would you please help to check the properties of these devices and let me know if they have different IP address or mac address?

  • Apple-centric Cell Phone Puchase Tale (or, a little knowledge is dangerous)

    It has been four years since my last cell phone purchase. (Catholics giggle here). So I bought a new one.
    After looking at this page (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html) it seemed like Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Nokia where my best options to use iSync for an Apple-centric phone. An Apple Care guy told me that he never had iSync problems with his Motorola phones, but I like the usability and solidness of Nokias (I like that they tend to be a little heavier). Sony Ericsson is my second favorite for usability reasons. My girlfriend and I must have the same carrier because 80% of our minutes are with each other, and she was under contract with Cingular. I wanted a good camera. Internet connectivity was a nice bonus, but I didn't want to pay a lot for a data plan.
    In the end I bought a Nokia 6682:
    http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/6682/0,2803,,00.html
    My dream phones were:
    Nokia N80 http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html?lang=en&country=US#product,n80 (i like that it has wifi and good camera)
    Nokia N73 http://www.nokia.com/nseries/index.html?lang=en&country=US#product,n73 (i like that it has an autofocus camera)
    The problem with getting high-end phones is:
    ...Most carriers do not pick up high-end phones because of low demand in US. This means that you have to buy a very expensive unlocked version (and a carrier may not service the warranty for the phone).
    ...They may not be supported by iSync. Sure there are iSync hacks but I don't want to go down that road.
    Things I Iearned:
    ...CNet.com is a great resource for getting to know a phone. They have video demos, objective data, a review from an expert, and several reviews from readers. Wikipedia was useful to get an objective point of view and to explain all of the jargon.
    ...Buying a phone (for anything more than voice) takes a lot of time because there are so many factors to balance (carrier, manufacturer, features, value, Apple connectivity)
    ...If you want a high-end GSM phone, I think you need T-Mobile service, because they are the only carrier supporting the 1900 frequency (although T-mobile apparently has the worst coverage of the big four)
    ...While there is only one Nokia store in the nation so far (Chicago), at least one mall (Pentagon City Mall in DC) has a Nokia Experience information kiosk (they don't sell phones, but they have knowledgeable staff and lots of phones to touch, including "coming soon" phones)
    ...A good way to compare phones is to do a Google search on the phone that you want, and then right click to open up the first ten results in new tabs. Then open up a new browser window, do a Google search on a different phone, open up ten tabs... compare, rinse, repeat.
    I'm grateful for any feedback you may offer.

    As I'm in nearly the same boat you are, but haven't yet made my new phone purchase, would you mind sharing your opinion of the Nokia you purchased? That model is currently at the top of my list....

  • A little help please...I have too much equipment and too little knowledge

    I live in a brick and concrete 8000 foot apartment so wifi with one router is impossible....I have wired two rooms each at the extreme opposites of the floor....Current set up: asdl modem-->wrt54g-->2 1mwatt amplified wireless routers (in AP mode)
    My problems so far:
    DHCP, I dont know much about this. The adsl modem has dhcp server setting s (DHCP on, or dchp off or dhcp relay) and I have heard you only need one dchp on in a network. So do I turn on dhcp on the adsl modem or the wrt54g...
    On my macbook pro under network diagnostics it takes like 4-5 minutes to establish ISP, Internet green lights, I always have to fiddle with all the settings, extremely frustrating for my wife who has no clue of this...
    Many thanks for all you help in advance...

    I'd recommend linking your flex app to a PHP file, it'll automatically handle all the photos for you without you having to embed them all. Keeps the app size small and lets you add more pictures without having to alter any code. Here's the example code of a very simply image gallery that i'd build on if i was making a photogallery.
    Flex:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="absolute" applicationComplete="getPictures.send()">
        <mx:HTTPService id="getPictures" url="getPictures.php" method="POST" showBusyCursor="true"/>
        <mx:TileList dataProvider="{getPictures.lastResult.Pictures}" width="500" height="500" x="349" y="129">
            <mx:itemRenderer>
                <mx:Component>
                    <mx:Image width="200" height="200" source="{data.imagePath}"/>
                </mx:Component>
            </mx:itemRenderer>
        </mx:TileList>
    </mx:Application>
    PHP:
    <?php
        foreach (glob("*.png") as $filename)
            print "<Pictures><imagePath>".$filename."</imagePath></Pictures>";
    ?>

  • So Many Errors So Little Time

    I've gotten so many errors with Encore 2 I don't know where to begin. I think this release wasn't ready. As I sit here typing I just had a project fail to create a DVD folder that was an exact copy from version 1.5 that I had backed up before installing Production Studio, this time is said "General Error." I've had nearly every error come up listed on this forum, in addition to those I've had Encore simply disappear in an instant, completely crash my machine, and fail make my DVD folder about a dozen times following changes I I've made in an effort to fix it. I tried using it on my other computer because this one has dual processors -I thought that might be the problem, but with the single processor machine it just froze up as well. Sorry to rant - I am just so irked because I stayed up all last night updating every menu on a DVD that has like 70 menus. I don't expect many to read this all, but if there are any techie people from Adobe reading I'll explain my project and my problems below in hopes that it may help leading to some updates that solve it. If this software worked as intended it would be a huge help in my work flow.
    My projects are very elaborate - they are wedding planning DVDs that have short promotional videos for about 50 businesses. With Encore 1.5 I had each video clip on it's own time line. I have a nice set of menus that allow users to go to the category of business they want, then to a menu for each business where they can play that individual promo. There were also various play lists to see all of one category or the entire lot. With 1.5 the projects worked fine and the DVDs I made worked fine. My concern was that as I add more businesses. I'd run out of DVD tracks by having all clips separate. Unless I am wrong, I believe there is a limit of 99 tracks, and 999 for menus, play lists, etc.
    In comes Encore 2.0 and chapter play lists. I was pumped. I re built my old 1.5 project last night with 2.0 - removing all the individual time lines and instead laying the clips down on just two. For each business I created a chapter play list, so users can click to watch just one video - it plays it from the play list and the end action and remote action return them back to that menu. Well - I had the whole project created and while working on it I updated all of the menus in photoshop. I had a few random errors during the process, but nothing major and I got to the DVD building point. I could not get this project to build without erroring out. While watching it transcode I realized that even though I laid clips on one time line in Encore, they still get transcoded separately - meaning they would again be separate tracks on the finished DVD.
    With that in mind I went back to Premiere Pro, combined all of the short promos together on a sequence, put in my chapter points and rendered it out as one .avi file with embedded chapter info. It imported fine into Encore - and I began working to reconnect the play lists to their new respective chapter points. All seemed to be going well with just an occasional error or hiccup - try to make a DVD folder after the project was done - again major errors and inability to make a Disc or video TS folder.
    It was at this point that I tried the project on another computer with no luck. And the last thing I did was to reload the backup I made of the last saved version of this project as created and burned successfully with Encore 1.5. I opened it with 2.0 and tried making a DVD folder, again an error cancelling out the build.
    So - here I am. I have to have hundreds of DVDs done for the end of the week so I am going to have to work in Encore 1.5 for now to add new advertisers and get the discs out. Given that Encore 2.0 can't successfully build a DVD from an identical project that was made with 1.5, I'd say it has some serious programming flaws that need to be addressed in an update. I thought it was the complexity of my project, but again, Encor

    Well, I have literally had at least 5 different error messages or events happen dozens of times in my attempts to make this work. I've had the .\Vobulator|TitlePlanner|CVOBUPPlanner.cpp,line331 error. I had another long error I didn't write down that also gave a specific line in it. I've had some just say General Error, Internal Software Error, Out of Memory (With 4 gigs this seems odd), and more. I've also had sudden crashes and the encore window just disappear. I also chose to edit some menus in photoshop, I edited them all and saved them - Encore had a fart, and all my changes were lost. So I ended up redoing it all, but saving a backup copy of my changes as .psd files in a separate folder - but they all worked second time around.
    Up to last night I was working on a project that had previously been an Encore 1.5 project. So I gave up on that and started a completely new project from scratch in 2.0. Then I've been adding and connecting playlists and menus in increments and then trying to build the disc to see where I hit the wall. Well - that's the only reason I'm on the forum now. I got the project to the point where all of the menus were linked and working, the three timelines had video encoded, two of them were completely functional - one is an auto-play opening, the other has a six minute clip with a few chapter points and chapter playlists. I started connecting business menus to chapter playlists - which come from a longer 45 minute video clip. I added one category of businesses with like 5 playlists, it started building the project no problem. Then I added another category of business - so now up to a total of 24 chapter playlists in all. Tried a test build and it just says General Error when the build window comes up.
    I'm gonna remove everything I just added and try remaking and connecting one playlist at a time to determine if it is a specific asset, or if it is a total number of assets or playlists that mess it up.
    I know with all these problems with Encore one might think the computer has issues, but it is brand new with fresh XP pro install and I run all other software flawlessly - I'll even have AE, Premier Pro, Photoshop all open at once doing stuff without so much as a blip of trouble. So I've ruled out a system problem.
    It's a true bummer - I'm so excited about this softwares features but it's killing me all the problems. I've never experienced anything like this with an Adobe product.

    You are right . P will not participating in iBGP. He is not aware of any Customer router of BGP VPNv4 route..
    P Router know only internal IGP. Please go through the below points.
    The JOB of Core router is to propogate the route As Fast As Possible without delay.
    Don't Get confuse in MPLS . MPLS is used for only  Fast switching . Whouth MPLS also you can RUN  VRF kown as VRF - Lite , BGP - AF & use CEF for fast switching.
    Before Going Further Please check you Design = Whether You want to Create Full Mesh IBGP  or Go With  BGP Route Reflector.

    PE routers translate into VPN-V4 route

  • So many compressors, so little know-how...

    Hi - I'm a Logic Express 7 user about to start mixing a song in the box for the first time, and I was wondering if anyone has any advice about the compressors included in the Logic Express bundle. For ex., what makes the Silver Compressor different from the regular old Compressor? If they're all terrible, and you'd recommend purchasing a really good compression plug-in, what plug-in would you recommend?
    Thanks!

    Hi YR,
    as you may have notice, the silver's has less buttons to play with,(also easy on processor) than the compressor, that comes with some presets (tools, drums, instrument & vocal). Sure, there's some great compressor plug-ins out there,
    but if you need a more professional sound, may be you should thinking of upgrading to Logic Pro that comes with all the tools.
    I really don't think you could call it Terrible, they're usefull, try to play with the parameters, ear the diferent presets and how they affect the sound,
    and also google some information on compression and what you can archive with those knobs. (in case you don't know)
    A compressor, could make a track sit great on a mix but it can also ruin it!
    try

  • Spamassassin individual profiles

    This may be better placed on the spamassassin page, but I am more familiar with posting here as a first stop.
    I've set up spamassassin, and got Bayes working. But there is occassional mention of having a system wide statistical database as well as individual users ones (to learn their pattern of ham and spam).
    Can someone point to instructions on how to get the individual training working? Specifically:
    Is it just a case of feeding their ham / spam to sa-learn as their user?
    Would spamassassin know to automatically use their database for their emails, or would separate daemons need to run as each user?
    Would the users move misplaced messages into their own version of junkmail / notjunkmail folders?
    So many questions, so little knowledge!
    Any help would be good.
    thanks,
    r

    If you want to have actual different bayes databases, you will need to stop using amavisd and call SpamAssassin with a different processor. While every other "user differentiation" can be done keeping amavisd.
    Have a look at the bottom of this page for some bayes info:
    http://www.renaissoft.com/maia/caveats.php
    Having said that, I think there are some fundemental understanding issue s here. Having different bayes databases will not allow you to see what is spam or not to some users. Try and dump the Bayes DB you have with sa-learn, the output is meaningless to the human eye. If you want to see what your users consider spam or not, set up 2 IMAP folders for each user and have them sort their spam/ham in there. This will allow to satisfy your curiosity Those different mailboxes can still be fed to spamassassin.
    So if you still want to go down that route, your best bet is to start at the SpamAssassin site and learn about the different methods you can use to call it (amavisd will not work for you).

  • Is it possible to check if anyone has applied to monitor my web browsing history/cache/bookmarks as an employer on my home pc without my knowledge or consent?

    I am using private windows to browse since someone seems to know what sites I've visited. I've done my best wrt blocking cookies and deleting history on exit, but some data in the "Library" exists.
    Apparently my isp provider and employer can see my browsing history of a private browsing window.
    I am currently self-employed but I volunteered for an organisation until October 2013. One of their members I worked closely with was stalking my email and browsing history without my knowledge.
    Is it possible for this slimy bleep to have weasled their way into monitoring my web activity by claiming to be an employer?
    Can I use a private browsing window safely?
    I have a business to run, so I need my information, email, web activity to be kept confidential.
    Any helpful advice will be gratefully received.

    Your question is a bit confusing, and it seems that you don't quite understand who and what can view your internet activity:
    * Private browsing mode simply leaves no record of the sites you visit in your browser. There are so many other parts of the chain that can keep records. Example: Your computer could have tracking software (installed intentionally or maliciously), many routers have web logging, your Internet Service Provider can view the sites you visit, your employer if you are at work, the government has extensive tracking programs as well. Private browsing won't defeat these tracking techniques. It basically only prevents people who have physical access to your computer from looking in your history and seeing the sites you visited in PB mode.
    * Your employer can't just request to see the sites you visit when you are at home. The only reason your employer could see the sites you visit is it you take your computer to work and use your work network to access the internet (and the employer has enabled logging on their network hardware) or you have a work laptop and take it home and it has logging software installed on it. Many employers have policies against using work equipment for personal. But there is no way that your employer can call your home ISP and ask to view your internet history.
    * Your ISP keeps a record of the sites you access, but won't release that without a court order (or to the NSA....) so unless you have a court order or a snoopy ISP employee who has an axe to grind and is viewing your internet logs illegally you don't really have to worry about that.
    * It's possible you have malware on your computer that is tracking your internet history. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]

  • DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

    I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
    Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
    I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
    Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
    Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
    Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
    Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
    I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
    I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
    I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
    Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
    Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
    Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
    Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

    I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
    You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
    Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
    In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
    There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
    BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?

  • How can I Connect 5 WRT54G V8 routers to cover a large area with Internet?

    Hi everybody, can anyone please tell me where can I find documentation with steps to connect many routers at the same time to cover a large area with Internet. I want to connect each router via wireless, so I don't to use hard wire.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Bubbateeth and thanks for your reply,
    Right now I have 2 WRT54G version 5 flashed with the DD-WRT firmware and the first one is connected to the internet modem by wire and I setup the second one to receive the internet and send the Internet signal to the first area and is working pretty well, but I'm trying to buy new WRT54G routers version 8 and I don't know if I'm going to have to flash this routers too or if the Linksys firmware can do the job. If it's possible, where can I find instructions to set it up?
    Thanks again!

  • Knowledge on Transaction log ?

    Hi All,
    I have couple of questions?
    Question-1:
    I need to know will running import/export wizard increase the T-log growth? OR will running simple select statement increase the T-log.
    To my little knowledge data modification (insert, update, or delete) or data definition language (DDL) statements only increase the T-log how about import/export wizard or simple select statement..
    Question-2:
    Also what will happen inside simple recovery model when comparable to full recovery model ?
    I assume the data is first written in T-log and once committed will move to mdf. In this scenario what will happen in simple and full recovery, how they differ from they differ from each other? Please help me to understand the internal architecture/inside oprations
    of recovery models...
    Best Regards,
    Moug
    Best Regards Moug

    Hi,
    Q1) No. Select statements doesnt get logged. Import/export will write to the database hence the tlog will be used.  Any statement other than a DRL (Data Retrieval Language) will be either fully or minimally logged.
    Q2) In case of Single recovery model, the data is in the transaction log till it commits. Once it is committed it is written to mdf and then the space is cleared which means it can be reused for other transactions. In case of Full Recovery model the
    space can only be reused once the log backup is taken.
    Check this link about transaction log which should clear all your doubts.

    You can check the log_reuse_wait_desc column in sys.databases to know why transaction log is not reused.

  • No of Routers in OSPF Area

    Hi,
    could any one please tell me ideally how many routers should be there in a single OSPF area ?
    regards
    Neo

    Hi,
    The maximum number of routers per area depends on several factors, including the following:
    What kind of area do you have?
    What kind of CPU power do you have in that area?
    What kind of media?
    Will you be running OSPF in NBMA mode?
    Is your NBMA network meshed?
    Do you have a lot of external LSAs in the network?
    Are other areas well summarized?
    For this reason, it's difficult to specify a maximum number of routers per area. Consult your local sales or system engineer for specific network design help.
    As per the Self-Study book, the optimal number of routers per area varies based on factors like network stability, but Cisco recommends no more than 50-100 routers per area.

  • How much Oracle Apps knowledge is needed to master SOA Suite 11g?

    I am an experience server-side java developer with little experience with Oracle Apps. I have worked on BPEL process manager earlier, but the new SOA Suite 11g has much more than just BPEL PM. When I go through the Oracle documentation, most of the examples are based on Oracle Apps that a person with little knowledge on for example, PO processing etc cannot understand very clearly. Is there any other way, I can get some standalone examples that are not based on Oracle Apps ?
    Share some examples pls.

    Hello Vivek,
    This is Vijay Kumar - Currently I am working on JD EDwards ERP Software which you might be aware of. Now I want to know Oracle Fusion - BPEL specifically.
    I need some help from you. By looking at your profile I am thinking you have some good experiece in that area and suggest me how to learn it. can you give me your phone number and email id to contact you. here is my email id [email protected]
