So, my hard drive just died and I'm looking to replace it.

How do I know which hard drive I should buy and if its compatible with my iMac(mid 2010)? Yea I know it only lasted a little under a year... *dissapointed*

Call Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 and/or walk it into the nearest Apple Store.
Good luck in any case.

  • My late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive just failed and is being replaced. It did not qualify for call back but I am wondering if there is others with similar issue

As I stated my late 2009 iMac 27 inch hard drive failed and is being replaced.. I am being charged as machine does not qualify for the call back program..call backs are on 2011 machines.. However i am in shock that my segate internal iMac hard drive failed in less than two years.. are there others with similar issue? Also when I get machine back will new hard drive be stable .. How do I make sure my working environment is reliable.. I have all my data and work backed up and will be able to rebuild my system but I really do not want to have to go through this down the line again.

Just to update everyone and maybe help people down the road .... It has been a week of **** .... I may have finally solved a problem that I have seen a ton of people in all different types of discussions around the world having trouble with ...... I am going to upload some pictures of what I was getting in the beginning and it came out of no where .... I had the random pixel problem with my display and to make a long story short I came across an article two days ago regarding internal temperatures and fan speed ...... I kept reading about apples approach which is not the point  .....  More importantly I dug deeper into temperature control and fan settings .... I discovered all kinds of software and there is only one in my eyes that can help anyone dealing with this display problem .... I will be honest,  I do not have the money right now for anything extra and am barely getting by and that is why I kept at it ... I figured keep trying different things because  a repair is out of the question ... http://www.crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control   -   This program has solved my problem - I get to adjust three internal temperatures inside my Imac and slowly but surely as the temperatures remained constant the display is fine .... Like new again .... I cant believe it ..... Turns out the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB graphics card gets very hot causing it to not do what it is supposed to   ..... Anyone that has any questions do not hesitate to contact me ...... I am going to upload some pics .... They are not that clear but if you are going through this you will recognize the images for sure - There was   so many more variations but this should help out - Thanks to everyone that takes the time out to help people on this support site .... I want to send a shout out to The Art Of Sound .... He is the most knowledgeable Apple person I have ever come across and I am an Apple user for 20+ years

  • New T430 hard drive is bad and Lenovo won't supply replacement preloaded software

Placed order for Lenovo T430 with preloaded Microsoft Office 2010, Adobe Elements, and Adobe Lightroom on 1/13/13.  I received the computer in January and have had ongoing problems with it since that time, requiring multiple contacts with tech support.  Overall, I could use the product (minus the thinkpad laster bluetooth mouse I also purchased from Lenovo that would not stay connected to the computer) up until this last week, when it would not start without going into the boot menu, but could not get out of the boot menu.
I called tech support, who thought it was the operating system and sent me recovery discs to reinstall the OS.  I had help from a computer servicing company who checked my computer and found the hard drive is bad.  They have called Lenovo, who are sending the hard drive out to be replaced.  However, Lenovo is refusing to replace the preloaded (by Lenovo) software I purchased from them.
    Case # A05LT3Q
Tech support says that my account where I registered the product would be able to provide the software.  I called customer service about that and spoke with Hason about the problem.  He stated that he would have to start a customer advocate case for me.  He says he does not yet have a case # for me, but will call me before he leaves at 7pm tonight.  I will post that case # when and if I receive it from him.
Am more than frustrated with this case and the problems I am having.

If I remember correctly, the recovery discs should have everything that came with the system. I could be wrong though.

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

take a look at this Apple page — in particular, the “Restoring data from Time Machine backups” section and its “Restoring your entire system from a backup” subsection.

My hard drive recently crashed and I just installed a new one.  Is there any way to get back my library? I only have 10 albums, where before I had over 100.  I don't think I backed up to the cloud but thought it was contained within my apple ID.  Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hey brituck,
Thanks for the question. If you music you are missing is content that was purchased from the iTunes Store, you may be able to re-download it free of charge:

  • MacBook hard disk just died

Guess what? After suffering from the worst case of RSS, which led to two logic board replacements, after one palm rest, keyboard and trackpad area replacement due to discoloring, after all that suffering and lost time, after suffering from the huge quantities of heat produced by the MacBook which letd to a crack in the 100% wooden desk I put it on, I now, yes me, get a question marked folder when I start my macBook. Aparently the hard disk just died!
I tried everything, there's no way any application from the MacOS Disc 1 becomes aware of the hard disk's existance now, it's just gone forever.
It really makes one think about the quality of the parts used to make the MacBook and recent Apple hardware.
I know I'll go next week to the Apple rep to ask for the disk replacement that will take some time to get here (and surely they will send me the same 60Gb when they do send it) and then reinstall the whole thing.
I just wonder what will come off next??
    Best,
    Pedro
MacBook (Week 20, Replaced LogicBoard twice), White 1.83Ghz Core Duo, 2Gb   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Also: PowerBook G4, Airport Express, iPod Nano

Yeah they will change it, but to my point again, what will come off then? and will it be on warranty when that happens? And what about my lost time, files, work, money, life?? —This is getting to my nerves the guys at the Apple shop are like: Hmm, here comes the MacBook guy again!?!?!
I didn't drop it, I treat it like it's my baby. It just died there sitting on the desk.
What kind of crappy hard drives are they putting in this machines, that last just seven months?
Is this the next RSS, behold the new HDDS (Hard Disk Dying Syndrome!)??
    Best,
    Pedro

  • I have a 4th gen 20G ipod whose hard drive has died.  Are replacement hard drives available through the apple store?

I have a 4th gen 20G ipod whose hard drive has died.  Are replacement hard drives available through the apple store?

I don't think Apple will do that repair for you, because the iPod is too old.  I believe the hard drive type used in 4th gen and older iPods is no longer produced.  There may be non-Apple shops who can do the repair, but they may be using a working part salvaged from a used iPod.
If you want to do the repair work yourself, and you are good at such things, this web site has repair guides
    http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
(There are probably also YouTube videos on the topic.)
NOTE:  There are two hard drive physical sizes.  The thick version has two platters, and corresponds to the "thick" iPods (with double storage capacity).  A 4th gen 20GB model should be the thin version.  The hard drive used in iPods up to 4th gen should work interchangeably, but 5th gen and later iPods use a different type.
I have a 4th gen iPod that started out as a 20GB.  The hard drive failed, so I put a compact flash card on an adapter in there.  The adapter is like this one (I bought it a few years ago so it's probably not the same seller)
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Compact-Flash-CF-SSD-To-Toshiba-IPod-1-8-inch-Adapte r-Black-/121174875639
The compact flash card is standard; I bought the cheapest one.  I currently have an 8GB card in there, but prices have come down, so I may get a 64GB card soon.  It works great with the 8GB card.  No more hard drive spin-up delay.  Battery lasts longer.  It's lighter.  And it should be more shock resistant.
The only mod I needed to make on the adapter was to bend over two pins 90º, where you place a jumper to set the drive to "master."  The adapter plus CF card is actually smaller and thinner than just original 1.8-inch Toshiba hard drive; I used some thin foam packing material (cut to the right shape) to take up the excess space and ensure the adapter and card did not become disconnected.
The 4th gen iPod has excellent sound, compared to some later iPods.

  • External hard drive gone wrong and copied everything to Imac HDD filling it completely

I have had my iMac backed up to an external hard drive for years and randomly the External hard drive is now not readable and it has seemed to copy everything to my imac hard drive filling it completely.
any ideas how to firstly fix the external drive without losing everything on there and second why it would have copied everything to the Imac?
I cant even do a restore from a back up as its all backed up to external drive and its saying its not readable.

If they're still in two folders (iTunes app and Music) on your external, can you not just copy those two back to the internal drive and expect it to work properly again? It's my understanding that music you wish to be active in iTunes must be on your internal drive.

  • Tiger randomly stopped allowing my External Hard drive to mount and...

Hello, I have been using an External Hard Drive (1 terabyte Seagate, new) for a couple months if not a year by now for saving movies, and all of my iTunes on it. Its been working wonderfully. However it recently stopped being able to mount citing invalid hard drive and gives me the options of either eject, ignore, or initialize. Im not sure what to do. And also my computer has been acting funny every since the day it started. I will walk you through it step by step.
July 6th I was surfing the web and unfortunetly clicked on a link that aparently contained a trojan. Or atleast thats what my Antivirus notified me of. I had downloaded the trojan some how without a pop up or anything telling me I was downloading anything. (using safari) So i ran a virus scan and saw one virus was in my system and that it couldnt be deleted or repaired by my antivirus program, Im working on getting rid of that but at the time I had my Seagate 1 terabyte external hard drive attached via fire wire to my Macbook. It was working then.
Later that day I unplugged my hard drive and took my laptop around a little bit, nothing unusual. Then when i came back later that night I tried plugging in my hard drive and a pop up stated that the hard drive was unable to mount and I could either eject, ignore, or initilize. I tried may different routes, restarting, letting it all rest, etc. And in Disk Utility i try to verify the disc and it says its unable to and needs repairs. So I try repairing the disc and it says unable to due to an error.
Then yesterday I went to my applications and noticed none of my applications are there anymore. These applications were saved on the internal hard drive so it was very odd to me. However i can still use spotlight to find and open my apps.
My question is, What can I do to allow my external hard drive to mount? I dont figure it is the trojan on my system but could it be? If so how would I fix it? Im mostly worried about getting the data off the external hard drive then I can reformat it. Or if theres a way to just get it back to normal without reformatting Id love to hear it. As for the applications missing and the trojan on my internal hard drive I can fix that, at the very least Ill just reboot my system with my original OS Disc and just start fresh, its about time anyways.
But please. If anyone has ever had their external hard drive just stop mounting and figured out what to do I would be ever so grateful to hear how you did so. The hard drive itself isnt damaged, its not making any unusual sounds. Whenever i plug it into the computer it acts like normal (turning on and what not) until the computer tells me it cannot mount then nothing happens. Ive looked online and it seems to be a software issue.
If its any help I was downloading a torrent (.avi, no viruses) at the time. I know sometimes if one file on the hard drive becomes corrupt the whole thing becomes unusable. Regardless I would appreciate it if anyone knows a way to at the very least retreive the files on the drive, but preferably know how to just get it back to normal. If i could get it to force mount (via terminal or something) I know which file would possibly be the corrupt one or something so I could work with it.

    Bejan:
Thanks for posting back with the pics of the messages from your computer. Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Unfortunately, Disk Warrior may not be able to replace the rebuilt directory, either. Tech Tool Pro has a better chance of repairing it, although this particular directory issue can be stubborn, and is often rooted in a hardware issue. Your surest bet is to backup/clone the information on the HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, completely reformat and erase the HDD (directions below), then restore data from backup.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing an External HDD
    • Connect external HDD to computer
    • Turn on external HDD
    • Start up computer and log in
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch DU.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel.
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
For more partitions than one, after you have selected the number of partitions adjust the size of the partition by selecting the top partition and typing in the size; then move down if more adjustments need to be made.
(See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Repeat above procedure to erase each partition
    • Quit Disk Utility.

    tornado2003,
What you need to do is boot into Safe Mode. Then delete the VGA Drivers.
After that boot normally and install the latest nVidia ForceWare Drivers
    Take Care,
    Richard
