So my time capsule died?? I think?

came into work and noticed a failed time-machine backup only to look up at my TC to see that the light was off. I unplugged and replugged in the cord on the back of the device and the yellow light went on only to turn off??
did this several times with same result. I got the TC about 2 years ago other then the thing running hot since day one I have had little no problems with the unit.
is it simply dead or is this something others have encountered? 2-years is not what I would call a reliable lifetime for a 500 dollar HD

Just to update
I made an appointment at the local apple store and the drive is being replaced. WIll not be in for a few days and I am cross that I have to go through that first backup again!
My apple care is just over two years old and TC was covered non-the-less. I do not think I would ever buy one of these again for work. at home there is an advantage of not having to plug laptops in I see a plug in HD much more reasonable.

Time Capsule Died, Data Recovery Question

Hello, I have either the 1st or 2nd generation Time Capsule which just recently died. Since this is my backup drive, I will need to get the data out of this. The tech specs say its a serial-ATA server grade Hard Drive. What kind of case do I need to remove the drive from the capsule and put it into a case so that I can successfully transfer data?
Would a 3.5 SATA case work? Is it something else? I've read about the repairs on these things, but am not interesting in soddering.
Much help would be appreciated.

Just go into a big computer shop or order it from ebay.. you just need the usb to sata cable and a power supply.. they sell it in a box for about $10. You only need it in a case holder if you intend to keep it that way.
There are neat desk docking units you can buy where you drop the hard drive in the slot. A bit more than the bare cable.. easy peasy though.

Just type usb sata dock or holder or cradle into ebay.. and about 20,000 options will leap up at you.
The drive in the TC is 3.5" standard sata. Don't take the server drive too seriously.. that is the one and only 500GB seagate in the original Gen1.
To fix the TC you do not need to solder in parts yourself.. there is a list of people who can help you.

The units are a drop in replacement.. but change the TC from AC powered to DC powered.

Time Capsule died spontaneously

I have read about how this has happened to a number of users and I thought I was one of the lucky ones. But now, after almost 2 years, my 500GB Time Capsule has just died. Nothing special has happened leading up to its death, I just noticed the exclamation point in the menu bar icon and went to look at my time capsule and now power is going to it. I'm assuming it's out of warranty...am I just stuck with a pricey paper weight and all my backups gone?

I took mine to an Apple Store (Regent Street, London) and after a bit of um'ing and arr'ing, they said "oh - the serial number is in a range which has shown defects" and gave me a brand new one (though still the older model - ****)
If it hadn't been for http://timecapsuledead.org/ I probably wouldn't have even bothered trying.

I have had the misfortune of my PowerBook and Time Capsule both dying at the same time .... needless to say my data is gone.
while i have been lucky enough to have my documents backed up on dot mac.
i can get ALL my music off my iTouch
but its my photos.
two questions.
1. my time capsule can not be viewed in airport mode or via ethernet. mac help here in singapore can not view it either. they say NO DATA to be retrieved. the TC has all my music & photos stored on it PLUS my back up. is this a common issue? or am i just super unlucky? (funny thing is that it still works as wireless airport device no problem - so i can access the internet - just not my data)
2. anyone know anyway i can extract my thumb nail photos of my iTouch?

If the photos are really valuable, take the Time Capsule's drive to a professional data recovery service. It will be expensive, but it's your best bet.
Alternatively, if you can't afford it, are technically minded and have access to a desktop PC, you could attempt the recovery yourself. The basic steps would be:
* Buy a SATA harddisk that's at least as big as the Time Capsule's drive.
* Attach both directly to the SATA bus of the desktop PC - *do not* use a caddy.
* Boot using a Linux LiveCD distribution such as the System Rescue CD:

* Use the GNU ddrescue tool to clone the Time Capsule disk to the good drive. Make sure you identify the drives correctly so you don't clone the wrong way and make sure to use the ddrescue logfile facility so you can resume/run a second pass, logging this to a USB flashdrive (or the desktop PC's internal drive). Note that this operation relies on the TC drive not being completely dead and may take several days or longer. Search Google for advice/tutorials on how to use ddrescue – make sure it's the GNU one and not the older 'dd_rescue'.
Once you've cloned, you can run recovery tools on the clone drive without having to worry about impending hardware failure. I'd recommend firstly running PhotoRec (which is on the LiveCD) and copying off all the photos you find to the desktop PC's drive. This tool reads the raw disk rather than any sort of file allocation table, so if the data's there then there's a good chance it'll find it. Once you've done this, try DiskWarrior or a similar tool on the clone to repair it as much as possible – this may be quite successful.
This procedure's not for the faint-hearted, though, you need to be thorough and confident that you know what you're doing and willing to accept that you may destroy the data irretrievably if you make a mistake.

Time Capsule died but I want the data off the drive

I too had my Time Capsule power supply die this past week. xx811xxxxxxxx.
I pulled the case apart to remove the eSATA drive.
I put it in an external case. I did this only after Apple said, no repairs, sorry.
I Bought the new 2TB unit and want to get my data off of the old unit drive that now resides in the external case. The old drive (500gb unit) mounts fine on the desktop with three icons, 1- Time Capsule, 1- APswap, 1- APconfig. I not only have computer disk backups but also a fair amount of regular data stored there. I could care less about the old computer backups. I want the other data but none of it shows up in the Time Capsule partition. I click on that partition and it only says alias is broken.
How do I get my data off of it?

The same happened to me regarding the TC, and I did exactly the same as you putting the disk in a new enclosure. However, I can see my data in the Time Capsule partition. In fact, I'm still using it as the Time Machine back-up. I simply pointed TM to it. Have you tried that?
Anyone know what the other two partitions are for, and can they be dismounted from the desktop without affecting the TM backup?

Help - Time Capsule Died?

Hey folks, my time capsule which has been working for a good 24 months has suddenly died - it appears to power on - I get an amber LED then after 60 seconds it just dies and nothing. Any ideas?

If the LED has gone off there is no way to reset or do anything.. it would not help anyway as the power supply is now dead.
If you have applecare on a computer.. (sometimes ipad is accepted and sometimes not), and the TC is less than 3 years old, Apple should replace it. They will not recover files or do anything, and you will get a refurbished one with same size drive as the old one.
Otherwise you will need to repair the power supply, replace it with external power supply or get a repairer to fix it for you.

Time Capsule Died and Won't Restart

Any advice?
My TC shut down unexpectedly and when trying to restart I get a static Orange light for about 45 seconds and then it shuts down again.
I can't seem to find any specific help for this any advice?

If the TC is less than a year old Apple will replace it. If you have AppleCare on any computer, and the TC is less than 3years old, apple will replace it. Otherwise it is now dead.
Apple cannot fix it.. will not repair them.. but a bunch of people will.
We actually think it is a good idea gone wrong. And worth the trouble to fix properly.

My Time Capsule died today

Beware of some Time Capsules actually being a time capsule and being buried for life. Mine just lost power and now wont ever turn back on and is now a big heavy paper weight.

I get the power on green light, then the amber light. Then at about the time it should turn green, it switches off. ie: no light at all.

Replace the power supply .. at 4 years even repairing the internal one is going to be difficult.. the plastic coverings will fall to pieces when you touch them.. they have been hot for too long.
The cheapest and easiest method is type 3 repair.

I discovered that these car LED converter units are readily available from China for a few dollars.
Recover the plugs from the old supply.. but follow the warnings.. the main supply caps are charged. And you can get a decent belt off it weeks after it has been disconnected.
Then all you need is some diy soldering of plugs and sockets and a 12v power supply.. easy and cheap to get.

My Airport Time Capsule only works when I turn off and turn on, but I think this may end up with the unit. What can this happening and how to solve?

Hello to all, good day, sorry my english google, but it is the tool I have at the moment. I'm having trouble with my Time Capsule Airport, I made all the settings according to the manual, but there has been a connection problem with my iMac. When I finish my work I turn off the imac and then again when they return to work and care, it can not connect to Time Capsule Airport, making it impossible to remove the files and make back up by Time Machine only works when I turn off and turn on the Airport Time Capsule , but I think this may end up with the unit. What can this happening and how to solve? Thank you.

Quando termino meus trabalhos desligo o imac e depois quando retorno pra trabalhar novamente e ligo, ele não se conecta a Airport Time Capsule, impossibilitando retirar os arquivos e fazer o back-up pelo Time Machine, só funciona quando desligo e ligo a Airport Time Capsule, mas acho que isso pode acabar com o aparelho. This is easier to do with pictures perhaps.. since we do not share a common language and machine translation leaves a lot to be desired.
In the airport utility bring up your Time Capsule.

Click on the Edit button and give us the Internet and Wireless and Network tab..
eg.
Please also make sure you are set to ipv6 in your wireless or ethernet .. whichever is used.. and do tell which.
This is wifi in your computer.
The following are important..
DO not use long names with spaces and non-alphanumeric names.
Use short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
eg TC name. TCgen5
Wireless name TCwifi
Use WPA2 Personal security with 10-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
read apple instructions to help with TM and TC.. they did finally admit it has issues in Mavericks.

Is my Time Capsule about to "die"?

So I bought a new Mac mini to be my new multimedia server, using Plex, hooked up to the HD TV and my Time Capsule 500 GB Dual-Band as a content server. The playback stuttered and I eventually realized it didn't do so if I played content from another source.
Also, when trying to transfer files from the TC to an internal HD, it takes forever, definitely not normal transferring times.
Add to that, not all of my wireless device gets wireless now. My iPhone suddenly has to make do with 3G, or one of my macs cannot log on to the Wi-FI. I can access the TIme Capsule, but not the Internet. Error message says that there's no IP. I can solve this by turning the modem off and on again, but I shouldn't have to be doing that all the time.
My setup and devices that rely on wi-fi:
One old Mac mini connected to the Time Capsule via Wi-Fi
One new Mac mini connected to the Time Capsule via Ethernet Cat 5.E
One iPhone 3GS
One Laptop PC
Please ask if there's more information about my devices that you need. I really hope this is not the case of the Time Capsule dying on me. It's not even 2 years.

Intermittent Wi-Fi problems can be hard to fix. For the new Mac mini it might help to reset the connection settings using these steps one at a time until the problem is resolved, recognizing that, depending on your problem, not all of these steps will make sense:
1) Use the AirPort/Wi-Fi menu bar item to turn AirPort/Wi-Fi off, then on again.
2) Try to select your Wi-Fi network from the AirPort/Wi-Fi menu.
3) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort/Wi-Fi item from the left column, then add it back.
4) In the same panel as (3), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
5) In the same panel, select the AirPort/Wi-Fi connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease". Note that the fix this step implements may be temporary.
6) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( _not_ <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
These steps may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, if you have any special network settings on your Mac for things like DSL credentials, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them. If you got all the way to the last step, if things don't work any worse than before, you can trash the saved SystemConfiguration folder.
You could also use the advice in the second message of this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that each client sees. That might show you an intermittent problem with noise.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

How do I migrate multiple sparsebundles from my old time capsule to my new time capsule?

My old 1tb time capsule died on me last week. I bought a new 2tb model. I have put the old disk in an enclosure and I can access the data on it.
The old time capsule was used to backup three Mac's. How do I migrate the three sparebundles to the new time capsule? I want to keep all the backup histories.
I found lots of sites with tips but they all assume that the old TC was used to backup only one Mac.
I run Lion on my main Mac and all time machines were configured to backup via wireless.

It worked. Kinda. I think.
I did the steps outlined in option 3. It took 2,5 days to do it (maybe because I had already switched to wireless).
Once the copy of the files was complete I actived time machine and selected the new time capsule as my backup. It said there was no backup history. But then it started backuping. Instead of the full disk (as I thought it would do, as it said there was no backup history) it only did about 35Gb. Which was what I had expected. I had just upgraded to Lion. After that backup it immediatly started again and did a backup of 40 Mb. (Why ???).
After that was done I started time machine and all the old backups were there (eg 2010) as a test I restored a file from Jan 2010. And it worked.
So now the other two sparsebundles to do.

Apple customer support problem 1st gen Time Capsule

Not sure there is any real point to this since Apple doesnt seem to really engage in these forums. However, I recently had a 1st gen. Time Capsule die per the well-documented power supply failure problem. After some prodding I was able to get Apple to replace the unit though it was a handful of days out of the replacement window.
Unfortunately the Apple "genius" did not include my full business address on the shipping label and the unit has been in Fed-Ex limbo for nearly a week. I have of course since provided Fed-Ex with the full address of my company office. However, they will not revise the shipment info without Apple's authorization. I have left 4 voicemails for the Apple "genius" requesting they update my address so the unit can be delivered. So far nothing, nada, zip... I'm glad my own staff are merely engineers, not geniuses.
To add massive insult to injury, today I received a reminder email from Apple that they have a $500 hold on my credit card and have not received the defective unit back.   Really? no sh*t! I've not received the replacement unit or return label due to Apple's negligence...hello...welcome to automated email ****. Of course, there is no reply address ANYWHERE to be found on Apple's website.
So, I'm sitting here with a dead network, $500 balloons on my credit card and no way to correct the delivery address on the replacement TC.

This is not the Apple I know and love. If I wanted Dell quality service I'd have saved the money and bought a Dell. I hope this is not the start of a long slow slide back into the Apple of the 1990s.

Agreed that an outright trainwreck such as this is atypical. However, I am noticing an overall steady decline in customer service at the local Apple stores as well. The "geniuses" at the Pleasanton Apple store are downright rude and unhelpful. That is why I even bothered with phone support this time.
I think the phone support attitude is what started me off on the wrong foot. This unit has a well documented power supply defect for which Apple issued a TSB and even reimbursed people who had to replace the unit due to the power supply failure. When mine failed, I was actually told by the front line genius - "well, it lasted 2 years, that's pretty good".   That is a Dell/Gateway/Compaq/General Motors attitude.   A $500 router should last more than 2 years. Cisco enterprise level routers last forever. Several years ago the white iMacs had a power supply problem. Mine failed 4 years after purchase and Apple cheerfully fixed it without question or issue. They had it back to me in less than a week.
My expectations for support are commensurate with the price of Apple's products. It is a luxury high-end brand. For perspective: This router costs more than a complete Gateway desktop computer system.
When you buy a BMW you expect a certain level of service, When you buy a GM expectations are lowered along with the price of entry. I don't expect to ever have to chase down keystone cop problems like this. My time is far too valuable for that. This is why I buy Apple computers and not Gateway computers.
Is it typical? maybe not. Is it foreshadowing what is to come now that the company is back in the hands of the bean counters that nearly ran it into the ground last time?   Maybe.
