So slow and always thinking
So my Macbook is always a few seconds behind with everything; for example: when I want to highlight words, delete words, or move the cursor.
I have enough space. In fact, I'm using a 1TB time capsule. I've also done a repair on disk permissions.
Any suggestions? I'm so frustrated!
+*I have enough space. In fact, I'm using a 1TB time capsule*+
The amount of free space you have on your internal drive is what would be important here. You should have 10-15% (give or take) free on your internal drive.
When you say it is slow... do you hear your fans running at a higher speed than normal? If so, you may have an application or process which is using an unusually high amount of resources. You can go into Activity Monitor (Applications / Utilities / Activity Monitor) and sort the processes by CPU. If you are not running anything, you shouldn't see anything using more than just a few %).
I wouldn't recommend a memory freeing utility. OS X does an excellent job at managing memory. However, a low amount of installed RAM can impact performance. How much RAM do you have installed. If your machine was previously running fine and just started doing this (and you haven't installed any new applications), it's probably not a memory issue.

Uninstall MacKeeper:
Follow these instructions to uninstall MacKeeper. They have been tested with the most recent version of MacKeeper. Earlier versions than the one released in 2012 required more extensive work to uninstall all its components.
If you actually used MacKeeper to alter your system, e.g. "remove excess binaries" or such, you will need to reinstall OS X as well as all your additional software. Uninstalling MacKeeper is insufficient to reverse the corruption it is capable of - once again, that is if you used it.
If you merely installed MacKeeper but did not use it to perform any particular action, the following instructions will suffice.
If you used MacKeeper to encrypt any files or folders, use MacKeeper to un-encrypt them first.
Quit the MacKeeper app if it is running.
Open your Applications folder: Using the Finder's Go menu, select Applications.
Drag the MacKeeper icon from your Applications folder (not the Dock) to the Trash.
You will be asked to authenticate (twice):
You do not need to provide a reason for uninstalling it:
Just click the Uninstall MacKeeper button. You will be asked to authenticate again.
After it uninstalls you may empty the Trash and restart your Mac. All that will remain is an inert log file that does nothing but occupy space on your hard disk. -

Why is my macbook Slow and fan always running
I recently upgraded to Mavericks, and since then my computer has been slow and lagging a lot. I see the perpetual spinning beach ball more than I would like. I have done everything I can think of within my knowledge to rectify the problem but it still seems slow to me. I have unistalled apps, cleared caches, run an antivirus, run onyx and cleanmymac applications. I don't know what else I can do. I also find that my fan is running constantly and when I look at the activity monitor nothing is eating my CPU, in fact it is always below 10%. Here is my most recent Etrescheck. PLEASE HELP!! I'm open to all and any suggestions. Thank YOu

"Essential" is defined to specifically exclude CleanMyMac as well as all similarly ill-conceived "cleaning" products that are likely to have similar effects. Never install such junk on a Mac.
Erasing your Mac will have the benefit of eradicating it, the useless Avast garbage, and Internet Plug-Ins as well.
You are likely to need more memory. 2 GB is barely sufficient to run any OS later than Snow Leopard. Your MacBook can address as much as 8 GB and I recommend at least 4 GB. -
ipad 4 retina display is slow after iOS 8, also upgrade to iOS 8.0.1 i think and safari is slow, animations are slow, and i can't restore it to iOS 7, there it was great. i mean its like my iphone 4 with iOS 7 in its best days. i hope no to get stuck again, i mean please let me go to the iOS 7)).
Upgraded my ipad4 from ios6 to iOS 8 because the new WSJ app required it. HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!!! I can maybe understand some apps being slower but not Safari or Chrome. Apple must be throttling back the ipad4 processor even more with ios8 to force an upgrade to the next gen iPad whenever it arrives.

Bought 4th Gen 3TB TC - streaming TV over the internet is now so slow and now is constantly buffering. It seems the Airport Utility is always 'searching for new networks' - don't know if this is the problem. It's not the internet speed as checked that. I took my old router upstairs and was streaming TV via my ipad seamlessly - the same program via the TC was constantly buffering.
I just expected to be able to plug in the TC, so a simple set-up and experience wireless both upstairs and downstairs in my house. For some reason the range is low and speed veru disappointing.
I am far from being an IT expert but I would welcome advice about setting up this TC so we can enjoy the product as it was designed. Please HELP!No silver bullet........but my suggestions may drive you in the right direction.
1. Unplug the power cable from the TC and wait 10-15 minutes before powering back up. Seriously wait!
Proceed to #2 if this dosen't help.
2. Unplug the power cable from the TC, ubplug the power cable from your Broadband Modem (assuming it's a cable modem), disconnect ethernet, and cable from modem.
2a. Wait 10-15 minutes then re-connect cable, ethernet, and power back to modem (your modem should power up unless you have a power switch) wait for all the modem lights to come on EXCEPT activity.
2b. Connect ethernet from modem to TC, and plug in the power cable to TC.
Proceed to #3 if this dosen't help.
3. Reconfigure the TC.........Read here........http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3728
All really simple to do....if you need additional help let me (us) know. -
How do I do a defrag? My machine is running slow and defragging always worked with Microsoft. Thanks in advance.
Pat,
Use Activity Monitor to keep an eye on your disk use and memory use. You may hear different figures, but I like to see my free disk and free memory above 25%. Sometimes all it takes is a Restart. Try to minimize the number of browser windows you have open at once. Quit unused applications.
Many of us in this discussion area like to use OnyX periodically. It clears caches and repairs permissions, etc. You can download it from this site. Be sure to download the one for the OS version you are using. There is a script called Automation within OnyX that allows you to start it and come back later when it's done with several actions.

My Mac seems to be running slow, and what I call the rainbow wheel, runs much longer than I think it should.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
Why is my computer slow?
Most commonly used backup methods
If you get pinwheels when off the Internet, it coudl be a failing boot drive or just a few bad sectors as it has a hard time reading from it.
This is a possible cure, it's a lot of work though.

My Final Cut X changed behaviour after conneting the external monitor via HDMI. Several times after restarting Final Cut X was very slow and it always kept repeating rendering on same three clips after every restart. Later the dual screen icon disapeared on the top of my screen and it stops rendering on every restart like before and the machine was normal and faster. Now Final Cut won't start anymore whenever I start it loads and crushes immediately on every restart.

My MacBook pro is so slow. I ran utilities but no improvement. It is always thinking... loading email, opening docs, opening applications. Everything.
What can I do?
Also get a ascending sound when I start my computer... like a "wooop" sound??The startup soun should sounds like a chime or chord not a wooop...
First, not enough free disk space can slow your Mac down.
Click your Apple menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Second, if it's not a disk space issue, check the startup disk for errors.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery. -
i have a mac 15" non retina and i didn't upgrade it to mavericks .. when i run photoshop my pc becomes very slow and i don't know why!! the performance on photoshop is up to 70% so i think is good .. what is the problem?
All I can suggest is that you open that file on the MBA and save it as a new file, then see if you can open the new one on the iMac.

I upgraded my 3rd gen iTouch to iOS 5.1.1 and now its speed to repond is slower and the battery goes flat quicker than before the upgrade. Skype, Sky iCloud and other apps are turned off (I think). Has anybody else suffered with this? Any ideas?
Purplehiddledog wrote:
I do backup with iCloud. I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever. Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.
