  • IPhoto so slow it's unusable

    ARGH!!
Super fast PowerMac 2.8GHz dual quad core, OS 10.5.6, with 4GB ram and 340GB available on my hard drive...
And the frickin iPhoto (v 7.1.5 - latest update) is so glitchy and slow it's unusable.
I've turned off everything I can think of in the preferences. Even opening the preferences is maddeningly slow.

    Answer!!
Called Apple Support. Here's what they had me do:
create a temp folder on my desktop.
Move all the preferences from: user-me-library-preferences into the temp folder on my desktop.
    log out
    log in
    check that iPhoto works.
go to temp folder, move all those preferences BACK where they came from.
    DON'T REPLACE (apply to all).
    log out
    log in
    check that iPhoto works.
    It worked for me!!!
Leave the stuff that was in that temp folder. When you come across stuff that doesn't look right (like the dock, or the menu clock) put that preference back from the temp folder into the preferences folder, and DO replace. Check that iPhoto works (log out, log in). This way you can isolate which preference messed up iPhoto.

  • I updated my 4s, and now the text messaging is so slow its almost unusable (type then wait 20  seconds to see characters)

I updated my 4s, and now the text messaging is so slow its almost unusable (type then wait 20 seconds or more to see characters on the screen).  Help Please!

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the sessionstore.js [2] file and possible sessionstore-##.js [3] files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Latest update makes firefox so slow it's unusable

after yet another ff crash, I forced an update to the latest release today. THAT was a mistake. Before, ff was simply unstable. Now it's so slow it's unusable. It's like running Windows 8 on an IBM XT.
Given that I'm running Win7 on an Intel i7 3770 w/16gb of RAM, and a loaded graphics card, pretty sure that I'm not the problem.
You guys REALLY need to fix the stability. I'm having to use Chrome to write this, since FF is so unusable right now.

I have the same exact problem. I'm a firefox user since the first version, and always have experienced ups & downs in performance and stability.
Latest releases result in too much instability (at least 2 or 3 daily crashes) up to v29.
With v30.0 the problems are aggravated:
Crashes continue, but now there are huge memory leaks and sluggish user experience (it freezes for a fraction of a second every 2 seconds!!!)
This happens after some time (hours?) after a fresh start (that i MUST do every couple of hours to make it usable).
Firefox is going the wrong way...

  • Premiere CC 2014.1 slows to be unusable on large projects

I have a project that is a feature length documentary, running about 1 hour 20 minutes. When I upgraded to CC 2014.1, the editor became unusably slow. Selecting anything on the timeline will get 2-3 seconds of the beach ball before it shows up as selected, any attempt to change anything takes 2-3 seconds at least. Type in a value and the keystrokes will not appear until after you type them sometimes 5-8 seconds with the beachball sowing up in between. The editor as such is unusable and not acceptable. My machine is plenty fast, accessing everything though a Thunderbolt drive and it was working sufficiently when I was using the previous version, which I can no longer go back to after upgrading the project. Anyone else seeing this or have a solution idea?

Kevin, it is also never wise to not deliver a project to a client because the bugs in the existing editor version prevent you from doing so, especially when the upgrade/update version of the application solves those problems. Staying with 8.0.1 was not an option.
That is one of the rare reasons that you might want to explore updating your project file. However, I would do so carefully with my backups intact.
    KB8WFH wrote:
No I can not return to 8.0.1 to finish my project because 8.0.1 is incapable of working with major bugs in rendering and editing. The good news is that the bug that was in 8.0.1 was fixed in the newest release. The bad news is now there are NEW bugs that also prevent me from delivering my project.
That's terrible. Feel free to start your own thread and I can try to help. Also, please file a case with support: Contact Customer Care
What would also help us is to file a bug report so we can try and reproduce the issue: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug

  • MacBook Pro Retina (rMBP) Running Slow; System Resources unused.

Hey! My Mac runs extremely slow in certain applications such as Final Cut Pro and GarageBand, to the point that the applications are relatively unusable, e.g. waiting 10 seconds for music in GarageBand to start playing after pressing play. However, when observing Activity Monitor, these applications are only using <10% of the CPU, and only a small fraction of memory.
    System Specifications are as follows...
    2.6 Ghz Intel Core i7
    16GB Memory
    512GB Flash Storage
    OS X (10.8.3)
I've performed AHT, SMC Reset, OS re-install, and an NVRAM Reset to seemingly no avail.
Any ideas what could be doing this?
I have a hunch it might be because I've only got ~20GB free on the startup drive - but as it's Flash Storage, I'm not sure if this is relevant. Also, IIRC, this issue persisted in the past when I may have had ~100GB free.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Takes 20 minutes to boot up, then is so slow it is unusable.

I have a 2008 Macbook, and it has become unusable. Whenever I turn it on, I get the grey screen with the Apple logo, and nothing happens, then I get a blank green screen for a while. When it finally does boot up, after usually about 20 minutes, my wallpaper is gone in favor of a blank green background, and it is so slow that every time I click on anything, I get the spinning pinwheel. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

With your configuration. ML will run no sweat.
The problem is that ML is available only as a download via Mac App store
And Mac App Store application is available only in Snow Leo
    You might:
Ge t Snow Leo install disc for $29 from Amazon
Then buy ML from the APp Store
    or
Get a USB isntall key for Lion (expensive),
    then upgrade to ML
    the former would be preferred.
UPgrade to ML from Snow Leo will cost ya $19

  • 2010 Macbook Pro is running SUPER slow.  Almost unusable.

My 2010 Macbook Pro is running so slow that it's almost unusable due to the buffering of data and the color wheel spinning incessantly.  I close applications, restart and nothing helps.  I have not downloaded any clean up software.  I teach and am dependent on my computer for EVERYTHING I do.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Determine if the same problems exist in "Safe Mode". Read below.
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
If you are still experiencing problems more information will be required. If you don't know where to start, EtreCheck can help with that. Read below.
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Do not download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).

For some time now Firefox had been painfully slow on certain sites, such as Facebook and a few others. I finally decided to try and fix it. Using FF safe mode didn't do the trick, so I reset FireFox. The problem is exponentially worse now. Facebook is all but unusable along with nearly every other site. Internet Explorer works fine (never said that in reference to FF) and it is counterproductive to use FF. Flash seems to crash often.
The strangest thing is I have FF on another computer and it runs flawlessly.

  • IPhoto '11 very slow and unresponsive - unusable, please advise!

I am having some problems with iPhoto '11. When I try to scroll through the image thumbnails, it often stops with a spinning beachball then I have to wait 10-20 seconds for it to catch up.
Also when I hit space to bring up the full image from a thumbnail, it appears then I get a spinning beachball and have to wait 20-30 seconds, after which the multi-image-scroller at the bottom appears and everything is responsive again.
When I look in Activity Monitor I can see that iPhoto is maxing out the CPUs (one of them at a time, it seems).
Together these two issues mean that it is unusable.
As to the possible cause, I have two theories
    1) It could be a recent iPhoto 11 update I installed
    2) It could be because I recently imported a large number of photos (an extra 50Gb) which may have taken my iPhoto Library above some maximum threshold. (Does anyone know if there is a recommended maximum size?).
My iPhoto Library contains 80,000 photos (some of which are actually videos) and takes up about 300Gb. It is located on my external 750Gb Iomega drive, connected via USB (I don't have room on the hard drive for the library). I did not experience these issues a few days ago, and I had about 250Gb library/72,000 photos then.
Having read the forums it seems that I may need to do one of the following
    - Split the library into smaller libraries (which would be a pain, but might allow me to be productive again)
    - Figure out a way to get the library on a faster drive... perhaps upgrading my internal drive to a larger one or SSD and put it on there
    - Wait for Apple to improve performance of iPhoto
    - Revert back to iPhoto '09
    - Find an alternative product that can manage large libraries better... Is Aperture any good? Are there other good products?
    - Some other solution I don't know about.
Since there are many possible ways forward I would appreciate some advice, anything you think would help, as well as any suggestions and/or officially supported methods.
    Thanks in advance
    Alex Bowyer

    Thank you for your reply.
I tried deleting the cache files and it made no difference.
I'd already waited for the new Faces to be scanned.
However, I found your response in another thread suggesting rebuilding using iPhoto Library Manager to create a new library.
I did this, and it took over 48 hours to complete but it did the job nicely. It ported everything across - images, keywords, albums, even faces. It also found 13Gb of duplicate photos I didn't know about!
The only thing I had to do was recreate my smart albums.
But now my new iPhoto Library runs smoothly and I can work again! Awesome!
    Thanks.

  • Data service in area is extremely slow and often unusable.

My phone lately has been showing 1x rather than 3G in this area most times (area code 76380).  I have an iPhone 5 and have reset network connections multiple times.  I had this problem when I first got my phone last year and was told by Verizon that there was a problem with a tower and that LTE service would be in this area before the end of 2013.  This never happened.  Can someone please check the service in this area?  I have other friends and coworkers that are complaining about their service as well.  Thanks.

I have been having the exact same problems as AndriesClaes. Basically, Safari in Yosemite is unusable, spending minutes trying to open simple web pages. It is unbelievable this bug wasn't picked up before release. Having migrated to Mac from Windows NT nearly 10 years ago, each release of the Mac OS is reminding more and more of the joys of Windows in the good old days!! Even the interface is becoming as garish and distasteful as Windows! Perhaps I'll end up back there again. Anyway, I have been through all suggested solutions on the forum here and the ONLY trick that worked was switching to version 7.1 (User Agent) from the Developer options on the menu bar. There is clearly something very wrong with version 8.0. I prefer Safari over all other browsers, for the Reading List amongst other things. Please fix ASAP!

  • Adobe Reader XI - Comments are so slow it's unusable... HELP!

    Hi
Running Adobe Reader XI on a brand new Windows 10 laptop - my work involves using Reader to proof read manuscripts, so it's crucial that adding Comments is responsive and quick.
Currently, if I open a comments box, it opens within 2-3 seconds, but then once I type a comment into the box, it takes anywhere up to 35 seconds to even appear! As I type, the box remains empty for at least 20-25 seconds, after which the text eventually appears.
    I can't work like this.
Have been through EDIT/PREFERENCES/COMMENTS , EDIT/PREFERENCES/DISPLAY etc and can't find anything that might help... I need things like text smoothing and line enhancement as I'm proofing the appearance of books as well as the content, so I need to know the lines I see are how they will appear in final version.... so I can't turn that stuff off (although I have tried and it makes no difference anyway).
Can anyone help me speed up this particular aspect of the programme? Nothing else on the laptop runs slow like this.
    Thanks,

    UPDATE:
I was actually running the most recent version - 11.0.09 - but unistalled and then re-installed to see what would happen.
Re installed, I used it to open a PDF (call it File "A") (around 6000k in size) and tried the comments tool. Worked perfectly.
Opened file "B". Original problem - comment appearing around 10-15 seconds after typing.
Re-opened file "A", to see if it is a fault with file "b" rather than Reader itself... sadly, the comments tool is now just as slow on this one, despite having worked perfectly first time.
Feels like it might be some kind of cache problem? Or possibly interference from a security program running alongside?
    All thoughts welcome!

  • CSS Slowing DW to unusable speeds...

Iv been having this issue with css slowing down the editing of a page... Its really bad if there is plain text on the page. The page is layed out with div tags and css. if i click or try to hit enter or do a line brake, any simple task. it take upwards of 30 sec to do anything. and sometimes dw stops working all together. this only happens in design view. code view works fine. I know it has to do with the css because if i remove the link to the css file it works fine. also all css code was made in dw. im running win7 x64 4gigs of ram and a quad core so i know it not my pc.

found the problem. DW did not like my 1x1 pixel .png repeating background.
How about trying a different file format like 1 x 1 pixel .gif file?  Does it make any difference?

  • InDesign CC 2014 very slow performance, almost unusable.

    Hello All,
Running InDesign CC 2014 on Mid 2010 Mac Pro, 2.4GHz, 36GB RAM, OSX 10.9.4.
When moving an image or text box InDesign hangs and beach ball spins. I've removed preferences, cleaned Mac cache and ran Onyx. Still slow with InDesign. Other CC apps work fine.
I have the same Apps and set up on 4 other MacPros with no issues.
Does anyone have a solution or a work round?
    Thanks

Have exact same issue on  my Windows 7 machine. Resetting preferences is a workaround.
So I start InDesign whilst holding down these keys.
Ctrl + Alt + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Ctrl + Opt + Shift (Mac)
Whilst inDesign is usable again with this fix- I have to do it every time so it trashes all my preferences so NOT GOOD long term fix. Otherwise InDesign freezes and can only be stopped by forcing a quit.
I have manually deleted the preference files and I have created a brand new admin account - but still no luck - will be onto support tomorrow

  • Computer keeps slowing down until unusable

    So. This just happened again.
I noticed rtorrent on my fileserver doing max 4kbps up or down ( few minutes ago I was maxing out my connection ).
And as I said this has happened before so I have a pretty good idea of whats coming
Basically the slow network traffic is the first sign. ( this happens suddently with no warning )
Then when in a terminal eg the output of ls is updated a few lines/sec.
And over time ( like 30min ) while trying to figure out whats going on it keeps getting slower and slower until the output is like a word/minute and I cant take it anymore and just type reboot.
At first I thought I had a dying HDD ( No processes are using any irregular cpu power )
BUT a reboot fixes this ( its all blazing fast and no problems as far as I can tell after a reboot ) for a few weeks until it happens all over again, or can it still be hdd problems?
So, I have no idea where to start, or even if this is software or hardware related. How do I continue troubleshooting this?

    Couple of ideas:
    - Check the logs (always step #1 for any problem as far as I'm concerned)
    - The symptoms as you describe them would also send me thinking in the harddisk direction. Try running some healthchecks with SMART, hdparm and fsck.
