So slow listing network shared folders and drives.

Hi!!
I'm reporting a very slow connection between my MacBook Pro 13" (snow leopard) and my MacPro 8 core (leopard). When I try to reach the macpro in finder (shared) passed 1 or 2 minutes until the system ask me user/pass, then show me the list of my shared folders and drives. Navigating through them is ok, ut when I return to the main list, SnowLeopard again waits 1 minutes or 2 to show. Before, the main list always remain there.
Any help??

Same sort of problem here. Screen Sharing also doesn't work.
Pretty sure it's DNS, as if I temporarily remove my router from the equation (by, say, using a manual IP address instead of DHCP on the machines and leaving DNS blank) everything works and is instant - except of course for the internet. Put it back to DHCP (which uses the router for DNS) and it's slow again (and screen sharing doesn't work at all).
However, OpenDNS hasn't helped (probably because it's a private address range?)
The network is 192.168.0.0/24 with gateway and DNS server 192.168.0.1, which is a Draytek Vigor 2600G ADSL router.
This has only happened recently, I guess Snow Leopard or one of its updates has forced reverse DNS lookups for everything.
As I understand it, AFP is supposed to use Bonjour for hostnames ending in .local and bypass DNS altogether, but despite checking that they end in .local (an automatic thing) in System Preferences it doesn't seem to do this any more.
Any way to turn off these reverse DNS lookups?

Ok, finally i just reboot the machine and it is fine now.
I guess there are some bugs related to the user permissions...
Indeed, I encountered a few bugs and they were fixed by rebooting the machine.
More details: I am using a early 2008 version mac pro with mountain lion and upgrade os to mavericks last nite.
At first, it cannot connect to my wifi network, it kept asking me to enter password for my network but kept saying it s failed. After trial to fix it by a few methods which were failed, i gave up and reboot, and vala~ It worked again..
Then i tried to rename my system drive as it was named "mountain lion", and i just want to rename it to "mavericks", error popped out, and i found that i cant rename folders or files, or put them in trash.... Again, it worked again after reboot!!!!
Guys, for those who wannna upgrade to mavericks now, better wait for a few more weeks till some update come up n fix those issues....

  • Query to get a listing of all folders and joins in EUL

If anybody has a query that provides a listing of all folders and joins between those folders in a Discoverer EUL, can you please share it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
As Rod commented you won't get an accurate listing going through XREFS. You need to look in the statistics table, EUL5_QPP_STATS where you will find a history of all worksheets that have been executed. Unfortunately the item columns in EUL5_QPP_STATS are encoded so you will need some special SQL to uncode them.
First of all you will need to have installed the EUL extensions which can be found in the script called EUL5.SQL (located in the Discoverer\Util folder where Admin is installed) when logged in as the owner of the EUL. Theh try running this script, altering the data switch to a suitable date:
    SELECT

    QS.QS_DOC_NAME     WORKBOOK,
    QS.QS_DOC_DETAILS  WORKSHEET,

  • Urgent-Renamed Folder in Shared Folders and now Error for all Users?

    Hello,
Well I was asked to shorten a name in Shared Folders and so I changed it. Now I get an error if I click on Dashboards or Shared Folders (which is empty now btw ???) or Manage Catalog, its displaying:
Target Path Not Found (/Shared/Customer Operations) Error Code: GZ8VXQ96.
Are we not supposed to create a folder in Shared Folders and then Change the Name?
Please Help. The BI Server Administrator is telling me that everyone else's reports are not available now.
    Neally

Kishore, Thank you for your response! I have forwarded it off.
Thing is, there was nothing inside the folder yet...I hadn't moved any reports over so there was nothing referencing it yet.
How can a name of a folder that is for our dept. affect HR, Finance..when they login? Their dashboard preferences were not set to mine. Confused. And to add to this, when I click on Manage Catalog is when I receive the error. So I imagine this is something admin will have to do in Oracle on bi server?

  • Slow remote opening of folders and files on just one computer on network

I have a network of four computers:
    1) G4 Cube, 450 MHz, OS 10.4.11
    2) G4 Mini, 1.5 GHz, OS 10.4.11
    3) G5 Tower, 1.8 GHz, OS 10.5.8
    4) G4 Cube, 450 MHz, OS 10.4.11
It is almost always very slow to open a folder or file on computer 1 from any of the other computers, or to open a folder or file on computers 2-4 from computer 1. There is no such problem between computer 4 and computers 2 and 3. When opening folders and files on computer 1 from computer 1 the performance seems to be ok.
Does anyone have any idea what might be the source of the problem and what I might to do improve the situation?
    Thanks,
    John Link

Hi John, is this Airport or Ethernet?
    Ethernet
Open Activity Monitor>Network tab, observe Speed when trying that.
I found Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder, but I'm not sure what you're saying to do with it.
Open Network Utility>Info tab, select the Interface you're using, what speed does it say?
100 Mb on both computers 1 and 4
    Any Errors or Collisions?
No on both computers 1 and 4

  • Network shared folders appear as 'sharepoint'

    Hello
I have 1 iMac and 2 windows 7 computers on my local small office network.
From the Mac I can see and access all shares on one PC, on the other, when I access via finder, the shared folders appear as 'sharepoint' and I cannot see any sub folders. I have checked settings on both PCs in the network centre and they seem identical.
Thanks if you can help. Regards

Hi, just an update...some of the problem is related to extensions. Some files have explicit extensions and others not. When I change the file extensions to an explicit extension (eg .pdf) then the file is fine.
However, there are no extensions on folders or folder aliases.
I've tried using chmod -x + file location/file name but that makes no difference to the alias, meaning that the Snow Leopard does not recognize the item as a short cut to another folder. Snow Leopard will only recognize the item as an alias if it's been created on a workstation running Snow Leopard OS. Very odd.

  • How do I watch Network Shared Folders in Organizer?

I must be able to watch shared folders on a network share in organizer.
Is there any way to be able to do this????
    I'm using Photoshop/Premiere Elements 12.
Is this functionality present, or any easier, etc. if I upgrade to 13?
For Example: One problem that comes up is, if you're able to bring up the network places, and choose the share you want, getting the error "The watch folder service returned an error: The user name or password is incorrect."
I've investigated this before, spent some time, couldn't get this to work after some internet searching. I'm now re-visiting this trying to get it to work.
    Thanks!

Here is the resource I find on the subject:
Photoshop Elements 6/7/8 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
[Note, how this is a problem back with PE 6.. I had PE 6... quit using it because of this same EXACT problem. I'd think that Adobe would fix this problem by 6 (or 7) versions later?!]
I tried changing the logon for the service the last time I worked on this and for some reason it didn't work. For whatever reason, I didn't get any errors this time.
I think my problem is, "watching" a folder isn't doing what I would have expected it to do. I'm expecting to choose a watched folder and then it will automatically populate my entire library (and then automatically update that as I add/delete/change files/folders). But I choose the watched folder, click the 'auto-something' (can't remember what it says) option, and then... nothing...

  • Listing Contents of Folders and Sub Folders

What I'd like to do is generate some kind of pdf or text file that lists the complete contents of a folder or some folder. For instance, when using iTunes, you can print a list of all albums and song names inside your iTunes.
In this case, however, I want to make a list of all the items in my various external hard drives. I have a lot of organizing files to do, so I'd like to just get it all listed, and start thinking about how I might organize things.
I also want this list as a record of the current status of my files -- so that after I change things around, I'll be able to refer back to how I previously had files organized.
Hope this makes sense. Thanks for the help.

Textwrangler worked quite well. My only complaint is that it gave me the files in a kind of strange order, so it's not that easy to use as a reference list.
As for the terminal option, so many of my folders have spaces in their names that I just wouldn't be able to get a clean result.
    Thanks.

On my computer shared drives and folders. But in the Nokia N8 no function to view them. I also can not see the shared  files and folders on phone from PC. Pages ’08 and Pages v5+ documents are special Package bundle file objects. When they reside on the Mac, they appear in Finder as ordinary files. When they reside on external storage, they will appear as directories. Pages ’09 documents also appear as regular files, but are in fact a compressed zip of a folder.
Your Mac server is likely running an older version of OS X than Maverick, and does not understand the exclusive new Pages v5 document format, or its proper presentation to end users, as would Mavericks.
    Choices:
    Export all Pages v5 documents to Pages ’09 v4.3 document format.Resume use /Applications/iWork ’09/Pages
Before saving Pages v5 documents to server, compress them first.
Right-click on the .pages document on your machine, then select Compress menu item.
Creates foo.pages.zip which appears on remote server as this name
Upgrade OS X Server to Mavericks Server
Despite its progressive version number, Pages v5+ lacks substantial functionality from its Pages ’09 v4.3 antecedent, including an entire incompatible document format with other versions of Pages. You should consider it early beta software, and not a viable production release (as Apple marketing would have you believe).

  • Accessing Network Shared Folders using Wifi from E...

I have a few computers with shared folders in the network the E72 is connected to. How can I access these folders from my mobile phone ?

    hi,
i already tried using Process, Runtime........ using "net view command" and parsing its OutputStream for results. Its fine and working in windows. Using that makes my program dependent to Windows...
The program detects what OS the JVM is running on. I could make an if-else statement and add another set of command for linux(samba scripts). But doing this make things complicated.
Is there any other way to this, like a Standard way. Like using sockets and ports and using only java native API?
    thanks,

  • How to print a list of the folders and files in a higher level folder?

I want to print out a list of the files that I have in a folder. It contains a nested series of folders with files in each. I want to print a list of folders and files in the same order that I see them on the screen. I'm seeing them in the finder in List format.
If I select all, copy, then paste into a word processor, I get all the files and folder names reorganized alphabetically, which I don't want. Also, I don't get the file size or date modified when I do this.
I'd prefer not doing 30+ screen shots then having to print them all individually.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Brad

There is also DiskCatalogMaker (http://diskcatalogmaker.com/) even better than PrintWindow in my estimation

  • Can't see my network shared folders(on PCs)

I have a home network with D-Link router with 3 other computers (2 WinXP and a Vista). The computers are all on the same subnet 192.168.0.10X and all use DHCP from the Router.
The Macbook is getting an IP from the router but it doesn't see the other computers in the Finder. and when I go to the Network utility an ping to the other computers or even to the router it doesn't receive any packets back.
I have no Idea what to do. I would really appriciate help in the matter

Activate your iCloud email address, then copy the folders and content from the Hotmail account to the iCloud account, do them one at a time and ensure that each one is completely copied before starting the next. This will take time as you are moving the mail across the internet.

  • RT Network Shared Variable and Visa Serial Instr class

    Hi,
I'm using Labview 2009 SP1 with the RT module. I've had no problems creating a RT Target application and a Host PC application which are interconnected using Network Shared Variables, until I came to the COM ports fitted to the RT Target (PXI Embedded Controller and 2 x 4 port COM cards).
I can configure and use the COM ports in the RT Target application providing I use constants to define which COM port to use, i.e. VISA OPEN function accepts hardcoded "COM2" , (VISA Serial Instr class).
But I want to pass the COM Port resource name from my host application.
Is there a suitable Network Shared Variable I can create ? or how do I change the string value (COM Port name) of the VISA Serial Instr class variable in the RT Target application ?
    thanks,
    Gary.

    Hi there Gary,
Thanks fot the post. I think I have found something that may be if use to yourself.

  • Sharing folders and settings between users

    Greetings,
I've decided to set up a new user account on my macbook pro running Leopard and I want to know if and how I can have the same settings i.e dock items and other preferences etc for both user names. I also want to access nearly all of the folders between both. The only difference between the two is one will have admin access and one won't. I would like to be able to access uni work folders etc on both.
I've tried setting the folders to read and write for both users but I can't seem to find them when I log into the new account.
    Any ideas folks?
    Cheers

If you are planning on setting up several accounts to be the same, you can use the *Workgroup Manager* of the *Server Admin Tools* to set up the account details (you don't need to be running OS X Server to use some of the tools).
Users normally do not have access to other user's accounts (admin users don't either). Your best bet is to set up the shared folder(s) in the /Users/Shared folder, since that is what it is for. ACL entries can also be added to the shared folder(s) to provide additional access so files that are owned by others can be changed, etc.

  • Mobile Network Home Folders and Leopard

How does one connect to a Snow Leopard server using mobile home folders using Leopard client?  I am not finding the join preference in the account system preference.
    Thanks for your help.

In the Utilities folder, Open Directory Utility and join there, make sure your network interface's DNS server is pointed to the Open Directory server.
