So then - do most people use other programs to edit thier photos?

After hours of reading on this discussion forum - which is incredibly informative and useful - and others, it seem that a lot of people use Aperture for its management abilities (I know, DAM) and not as much for its editing abilities. (Perhaps its intended function?) Is this accurate? Is it intended to be a compliment to <insert you favoite photo editor title here> rather than a replacement?
It seems to be far too powerful an editing tool to simply use to structure my files - but send them out to an editing program when I want to edit.
Again, I am a newbie and am probably missing something, but as an example using the sharpen edge tool I cannot seem to apply much sharpening at all even maxing the sliders. In PS (I am not trying to cause I debate, it just happens to be the program I have been using to this point) you can easily sharpen, over sharpen and completely distort the image beyond useful with tiny adjustments in the parameters. I have about a half a dozen presets as baselines in unsharp mask (normal, reduce haze, portraits etc) that I start with and change slightly per photo. I wanted to create the same structure in Aperture, but it does not seem to have this ability - which I find strange because just about everything else I do in Aperture seems to have abilites way beyond my own and I find I am having difficulties with simple things, such as adjusting light levels.
Any thoughts?
As always, many thanks.

As has been noted by those wiser and better than I, "take the picture right, then you don't have to muck with it in the darkroom." There is, of course, a lot of truth in this but the digital image is another beast compared to film. I suspect that I handle about 90%+ of my images directly in Aperture. I have a number of plug ins (SilverFX, Vevezia, Photomatix HDR, and Noise Ninja) and I link to an external editor. Most of what needs correcting, improving, focusing, etc., can be done within Aperture particularly now that the plug ins are 64 bit. Still, I have a full copy of Photoshop (actually CS5) as there are things that can be done in PS that I don't know how to do any where else. (There are also hundreds of things that PS can do that I haven't learned!)
So the answer to your question: depends on how deep you like to get into the image. I liked the dark room in the old days (dating myself here) so I have found the amazing power of a program like PS to be irresistible. YMMV.

A few years back I was able to get Adobe to switch me to the Mac version of CS2 by paying the upgrade fee difference. Won't hurt to ask. There was a bit of song and dance routine (faxes and stuff to prove I had the Win version) but it worked out. Worth a try but recommend you learn Aperture and its available plug ins first.

If I switch my installed PS6, Illustrator and InDesign over to the Cloud (from an installed program with the code, like Adobe used to do it), will I have to pay monthly even though I already purchased the programs? And will I then be able to use the program on another computer when I sign into my adobe account? I know how to switch it over, I just want to make sure I won't also have to pay monthly even though it's already been purchased.

Your purchase of licensed version of Adobe applications does apply to CC subscriptions.  If you subscribe you will pay for the subscription on whatever periodic basis you choose (monthly versus annually).

If your needs are limited to those tasks then both Preview and iPhoto will fit the bill They are already on your Mac. There is a free download from Google called Picasa available here:
    http://picasa.google.com/
It works much the in same manner as iPhoto. For some really heavy duty work there is GIMP available from SourceForge:
    http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/  Also a free download.

Adobe now hides the editor - what looks like it is not - you want the editor hidden in the support folder - see http://forums.adobe.com/message/3955558#3955558 for details

Nothing will print. My printer works with every other program, but not this one!

I see the printer, in blue when I click on the hardware tab. Actually there are 2 things listed that have to do with the printer.
    The first one is called:
HP Photosmart Prem C410 series (DOT4PRIN.... and under the Type it is listed as IEEE1284.4...
    The next is listed as:
HP Phototsmart Prem C410 series and under the Type heading it says Printers.
I don't know which one to pick.  So when I choose the name highlighted in blue, what do I do to change the name?

  • Finder "drops out" during operations, then "drops in" when in other programs.

When trying to copy files to a USB stick or through AirDrop, Finder will drop out for a second (all its windows briefly disappear and processes will stop). The files will be partially copied to the USB stick, but greyed out.
When in other programs, like Safari, Finder windows will suddenly appear, unbidden.
When I run DiskUtility, I will get a very long list of permissions which need to be repaired. When I click "Repair Permissions" it says it repaired them, but then running Repair Permissions again brings up the same list. I have tried the "resetpassword" command in Terminal from the Recovery Volume (Restart+CMD-R) to reset the home folder permissions and ACLs. I have reset the PRAM. I have done a Safe Boot and restarted. I still cannot copy, and Finder is still acting weird. What can I do?

Might be Finder preferences are corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
    Launch the Finder to test.
If that didn't help, try relaunching the Finder > Relaunch Finder… from the Mac OS X Finder
It's not necessary to repeatedly repair permissions. Those are messages, nothing more.

  • Does iMessages only work when writing to people who have i05, or can you write to people using other systems ?

I have an iPad 2, but have never yet been able to send a iMessage....does this only work when writing to people who also have i05, or can you also write to people who use other systems ?
iMessages is turned on on my system, but even when writing to people who I know have iPads or iPhones , I just get the red exclamation mark....
Sending messages on my iPhone seems to work okay when sending to non iPhone users, so I don't understand what's wrong here .

    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3529 :
iMessage allows you to send unlimited text, photos, videos, locations, and contacts using Wi-Fi or 3G* from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to other iOS 5 users.
Note: On iPhone, if iMessage is unavailable, the message may be sent as SMS or MMS, depending on content. Carrier messaging rates may apply. You can turn this on or off in iPhone at Settings > Messages > Send As SMS. Messages sent using iMessage will appear in a light blue bubble, while messages sent using SMS or MMS will appear in a green bubble.

  • Aperture quick preview locks in after using Google/Nik to edit a photo

I'm not sure when this started happening, but I've recently been annoyed with very frequent restarts of Aperture being required.
If i edit a photo with any of the Nik/Google programs, save it, and get back to my project full of photos...the quick preview stays locked onto the original of the photo I just editted.  It doesn't even update to the edit of it. I thought my library was large and bogging the system down or something, so i made a new library and imported 4 photos, editted one, and it's still doing the same thing. Any thoughts?
I did a quickie search, but I'm terribad at searching in these forums. Sorry if it's somewhere obvious to you pro searchers

hey thanks so much! ok, ill jsut deal with editing one photo at a time and then restarting aperture each time.. lol its ANNOYING, but it WORKS.. so ill deal with it!
    thanks again!!!

  • When using some app to edit my photos, is the app editing the optimized version or the original?

I currently have my full resolution photos and videos on my iPhone and iCloud but I'm running out of space on my iPhone.  If I choose to have optimized versions of my photos on my iPhone, will photo editing apps such as Snapseed or some other app be editing the optimized version?  Or will the iPhone automatically download the full resolution version for me to edit?

I guess it would be the same for the videos?
How long would the full resolution photos and videos stay on the iPhone?  Until it's low on space and then the iPhone will auto delete the full res versions?

    Aperture 1.0.1
Then Aperture 1.1 — we're in for a real treat.
Ailan, 99.9999 percent of the time I use ambient light to shoot (as oppose to using my studio lighting and backdrops) so the lighting conditions are constantly changing, I then load the images into Aperture do a little composition crop, levels, sharpen maybe and then print or post to web.
It is the same thing I was doing in another application but was much slower. I now have a life thanks to Aperture instead of sitting in front of a computer waiting for the application <cough>Photoshop</cough> to do its thing.
