So this is weird, brightness effected BLACK SCREEN 27" iMac 2010

Huge problem with my iMac - ongoing.
Could not go past 3-4 clicks without the screen cutting out. (BLACK SCREEN)
Computer still runs in background.
I tried everything to fix it.
I fiddled with the RAM a bit and that solved it today - or so I thought.
It seems that at full brightness my desktop is fine, but if I lower it, it blacks out again.
Is this strange? I am rather astonished under the circumstances.
Anyone have an opinion or experience in the matter?
Thanks!

Geraldine - for what it's worth, I've had this problem for over a year now with my FP15" iMac 800mhz. After reading up on it here in these discussion boards after the first time it occurred, I took it in to the local Apple store assuming they would repair it. They were aware of the issue and convinced me to wait until it went black 100% of the time, and then consider repair or replacement. As I said, the problem still pops up from time to time - each time I think, uh-oh here it goes, permanent black. But the display will then quickly come back - sometimes by just moving the mouse.
My iMac will be 6 years old this April and it's used daily. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but know it will need replacement some time. I definitely back up my hard drive much more often than in the past. If it does go, I want to be sure I have a mirror image of the HD so I can easily move my data to a new machine.

  • After Effects Black Screen

    Hello.
I have a problem with black screen. If i make a new project, and make a new composition and putting an effect (in this case audio spektrum), then the screen shows black. no effects working at all.
What can the problem be? i use the After Effects CC Trail Version. Using Mac OSX.
    Regards,

Some effects require other assets. Audio spectrum requires an audio layer and proper setup. Some effects don't start until some time has passed like radio waves or particle systems.
You should start here if you are just learning AE.

  • Black Screen on iMac 27" after loading BootCamp 3.1

    Hi all,
I manage to load Windows 7 on my iMac 27" with ATI Radeon HD 4850 after several tries (need to read all the instruction the first time). I had in running, loaded my Office 2010 suite and other software. But something was missing.
I loaded my Snow Leopard CD (older on from previous upgrade) and load the BootCamp Utilities (which didn't support Win7) and rebooted. Boom...back to the black screen. I thought I was saved because I had already set up my BootCamp with Parallels. I loaded the new BootCamp 3.1 update on the system under Parallels and rebooted...same thing...black screen.
So, without having to delete my BootCamp partition again...how can I fix this?
    Thanks
    David

Thanks for the suggestion. I live in Victoria, BC, Canada and there isn't any Apple Store on the island. That is why I took the machine to the University of Victoria's Computer store. The nearest Apple Store is in Vancouver which would take me a whole day trip (with a ferry and drive) to that store.
I couldn't hold the machine long enough to download the EtreCheck software to get an report on my machine. I turned off my machine on Feb. 22 and haven't tried to start it yet. I am using my old MBA (1st Generation) currently.
Just wonder whether I need to replace the Display on my machine to solve the problem.

You can do an SMC and PRAM reset. These won't hurt anything and 'might,' maybe help the screen issue.  If it doesn't, then take it into an Apple store or AASP for their guidance and advance testing diagnostics.
    SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Black screen on iMac

    Hi, guys:
Recently I installed Security Update 2008-002 and Safari update, as a lot of us have done. However, unfortunately, after that, black screen frequently happens on my iMac. I can't light the screen up when it happens but pushing down the power button to switch it off.
Do you guys have this problem? What can I do? Send it to repire?

I just started experiencing these problems today, but my iMac is all of two weeks old. And to think I decided to buy an iMac over anything else because everyone I asked said they were oh-so-reliable...
My problems started as a screen flicker when I was simply running an internet browser, word processing app and iTunes. Not long after that the screen would go completely black and I would have to shut down my system. Afterwards, I would have to try to boot up 2-3 times to load Leopard without the screen staying completely black. Initially I thought it was maybe a glitch on my system, so I re-installed OSX 10.5 only to have the same problem. After the re-install, it could take sometimes up to 5 boots to load Leopard without having a black screen show up. I removed my RAM and reinstalled it with no problems, but my issue with the "black screen of death" didn't seem to go away. I'm pretty well convinced that I just need to take my desktop to an Apple store to get it fixed rather than waste my time trying to solve something giving everyone a headache.
Has anyone heard if Apple is having issues with defective video or graphics cards/drivers? That seems to be a likely issue. My hard disk is error-free after I verify it. Is there any way to run diagnostics on the video or graphics components of an iMac? Thanks.

  • Black screen Macbook Pro 2010

Still having problem with my macbook pro (MacBookPro6,2) black screen time after time when using Lion didn´t help with the grafic bug fix.
Had to go back to Snow Leopard again.
    Are many having those problems?

I sent them some crashreports and did the hardwaretest 3 times. The hardwaretest says that nothing is wrong. The support says i must leave it to Apple for morse tests! :-(
I reinstalled Lion clean 4 times. Same chit.
What i did? I reinstalled Snow Leopard. And now its working without any problems.
I will probably test Lion again in a few mounth, and hope them have found some softwarefixes.

  • Black screen on iMac i7 2,93 when warm

    Mid on 2010 imac 27 "
Processor: 2,93 GHz intel core i7
    GPU: ATI Radeon HD 5750
    Memory(Report): 4 Go 1333 MHz
For 1 month, my imac presents signs of weakness at the level of the display(posting).
In normal functioning, everything takes place well.
When I launch one games under mac os X or bootcamp, the display cuts itself a little time after the launch of the game (playing up to 5 - 10 mn) according to the temperature of components and a black screen appears. If the display stopped, the activity of the system continues to work...
As it is delicate to pilot his mac without image, I reboote.
I have to wait that the imac cools to obtain again a display.
At first, I thought of drivers problem of the GPU but given that I had no image when I reboot the machine he certainly has to involve a material problem (but which?). I think that he owes involves a problem of cooling of the GPU but I am not sure of it.
If you had the same problem (and solved), contact me :
    Thanks a lot.

I have asked the hosts to remove your email address - for your own safety, you should never post that in a public forum.
Can you check Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities) and post a screenshot of your memory usage a the bottom - and,  make note of the memory usage while you have your game open (what game is it?). Lion likes lots of memory and you only have 4 GB, so that can possibly be a problem depending on the game and other things you are using.

  • Installing Win 7 via Bootcamp on 27' iMac 2010 gives BLACK screen, BLINKING cursor error (BSBCE)?

    Hi All,
All coments appreciated regarding thiis issue.
    I have a 2010 27' i7 2.93Ghz iMac with 8Gb ram, 2Tb Seagate, and 256 Samsung SSD.
I am running 10.6.8 with all updates on the 2Tb Seagate (has BC 3.04), and 10.7.1 on the Samsung (has BC 4.0).
I have tried over a dozen times to install Win 7 (both a 32 bit Professional edition and a 64 bit Ultimate edition) on BC partitions on both drives. These have been all on separate occasions of course.
All installs result in what appears to be a successful install, but when the machine reboots to launch Win 7 for the first time, I ALWAYS get a black screen with a blinking cursor error (BSBCE).
This is not the 2009 video card driver issue problem reported so widely and referred to in the Apple article TS3173. I had that model previously and the way around that was to connect a second monitor/LCD for the installation.
No this is a new and separate issue.
And I am no nubie. I have used IT for over 25 years and teach networking courses in the Win and Mac environments.
The problem appears to be in a corrupt boot loader install.
I have used both WIn 7 install disks to do a repair each time. The repair says it is successful but after rebooting all I get is the black screen and flashing cursor, with no keyboard response. I have used both Bluetooth keyboards and USB keyboards. Nothing seems to make a difference re getting WIn 7 to boot after the install on either drive.
I have also used the Bootrec commands in the command window. They all return a successful outcome but when rebooting I see the ever familar BSBCE.
Now,,,,,here is the real puzzle. I copied my previous Win 7 Ultimate install using Winclone before I sold my older 27' iMac.
If I restore that install to the 2010 iMac Win 7 boots fine!
So some error is happening on my current machine when the bootloader/bootmanager is being written to the BC partition.
The problem is there with the BC on both 10.6 and 10.7, and these are different versions of BC!
Now to further complicate the problem, I manage 12X 2011 21.5' iMacs in a lab at work. Win 7 Professional 32bit installed on these machines just as it should (same disks that produces the black screen flashing cursor).
I have read that some people thing it is a Boot Rom version issue, and there may be some substance to this as WIN 7 installs so easily on the 2011 iMacs in my lab.
I called Applecare about this and went through the procedures outlined above. The guy was very helpful and sympathetic but he had no answer to the problem. His suggestion was to pull the SSD out and do it again with only one drive. As the machine can ship from Apple with both of these drives I really do doubt that pulling the SSD would make a difference.
Mac OS 10.6 and 10.7 work fine, no problems on both drives, so I don't think it is a drive issue.
    OK Mac gurus...over to you.

I have a bookmark for iMac w/ SSD and hard drive.
There is also the 'req'd reading' in http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
with one article on Black screen w/ iMac 2010.

  • How to How to install ATI Radeon HD2600 driver on bootcamp 3.0 windows 7 partition w/black screen problem

Ok....so i've posted this question in a different way, and i gotten several "scratch the surface" answers from people just saying to install "Ati catalyst", or insert the os x dvd and run set up.exe, and update  to boot camp 3.1 or 3.2...while these all seem like great suggestions, I am finding myself needing more specific direction or "hand holding" so to speak.....here is the MAIN problem...
    The Background/history
I used boot camp (3.0, and i found updates for 3.1 for imac and for windows, but can't find for mac pro, AND they all are ".exe" files which run on windows..which as you'll see is the big part of my problem...So I recently updated my mac pro (with the ATI Radeon HD2600 graphic PCIe card with 10.6.7 from 10.5.8.  I created a single partitioned drive to install windows 7 professional 64 bit.  The download software function didn't work (Thanks, APPLE for that poor level of support) so have to select the option that i have already downloaded, or have other media with the drivers already on it....i restarted with the windows 7 disk in....
The installation of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
So the installation of windows 7 seemed to go flawlessly, was able to use my existing 23" hd apple cinema display (so somehow it has drivers that work with the graphics card, or maybe the motherboard's on board video components) and i select english, and install now, custom, blah, blah, blah...installation causes a few reboots, then restarts ultimately back in os x since that is the default boot os i use on this desk top and have to do the "opt" button to select booting in windows....so when i try restarting in windows, now using the actual boot drive on which i am installing it, it ran through another reboot or two, but then after that, my display goes black....  in the communities, the solution sounds super simple... "go download the ATI catalyst for the black screen problem....windows 7 doesn't have device drivers that work with the ATI radeon hd2600...no problem, just go download and install...."
The problem, re-emphasized :  I cannot even finish the install for windows, because of this driver problem....i cannot see anything....I have tried to reboot in safe mode, and that then seems to invoke whatever basic drivers that do work, likely through the motherboards onboard video vs the actual graphic card, and the screen works and says that it's wanting to complete the installation, so i'm thinking awesome this is gonna work....and then.. "windows installation was not completed and cannot be completed in SAFE MODE, need to restart, blah, blah, blah" pops up...and forces reboot...so Safe Mode allows me to see, but won't allow me to finish the install of windows 7...and without completing the install i can't run (ranther I DONT KNOW HOW TO) any of the various .exe files everyone is telling me are the solutions to my problem...like update 3.1 and 3.2 bootcamp...they're all .exe files?  not sure why, because bootcamp runs in 10.6.7 i thought, but whatever...it needs running Windows to execute...then the ATI radeon hd2600 driver for windows 7 that i downloaded from the site has an installation program that is an .exe file, which needs windows to run...  Does this make sense, why i can't just use these fixes, that seem to be the only fixes out there....so can someone school me step by step here (not just the highlights) of how to update bootcamp, and how to install the ati radeon driver  without having been able to complete the windows 7 installation because the monitor goes and stays black????
This is so very frustrating for the record...and any substantial help "not just go download this..." would be immensely appreciated.
Some other things i've been told to try that i've tried and nothing seems to happen as i'm told it will....
---I've been told to install the osx dvd and run "setup.exe"  - AGAIN...it's an exe file...and 2 - when i put in the os x file it just wants to re install 10.6...so need more help if this is even a real solution to understand how to make it work...
---I've been told to update boot camp to 3.1 and/or 3.2 from 3.0, using Apple Software Update....Well, my software update is saying everything is up to date and there is nothing new to download at all, and when i reverify the bootcamp version it is still only 3.0.2...and again downloading the updates from www.apple.com/support/  for 3.1 and 3.2...all of those are .exe files...need windows to run them...again, refer to the problem described in detail above...
---I've been referred to the black screen on imac early 2011 thread saying it should fix my problem...and reading it it SEEMED like the most promising resolution...it involves creating a boot flash drive for windows 7 and an xml file that sets the imac drivers to auto install during the windows installation..and it got me farther than anything else..but still ultimately ended up in the darned black screen...my assumption is that it's because it's for imac and not mac pro so not ati-radeon specific drivers....ok....that's enough..please...anyone who thinks they can help...your help is desperately needed...thanks so much in advance!

hey Hatter, thanks so much for getting back...so just to be super clear...is there no way to install the drivers using an exe file given my current state? no way to do it with command prompt or something?  if can make work with existing card, i'd prefer it...now when you say it's 'toast' how do you mean?  it works well with the os x partitions and always has...so i'm not sure i follow, just want to be clear...
Now to your point of starting with only the one drive installed...so i would put that bootcamp drive in bay 1 and disconnect the rest...i'm not totally sure what you're suggesting the effect should be of doing this?  just that i'm just installing windows without the bootcamp deal...but if windows 7 doesn't support the ati radeon hd2600, it still will go black screen no? or you're saying it will run video through the motherboard if it's the only bootdrive, and will run all the way through the windows install without trying to switch over to the hd2600?  (slrry flr these questions..just really want to make sure i understand what you're telling me..thanks so much for your patience and help by the way...it's very greatly appreciated...your support is priceless!
So now, assuming none of the above is possible...referring now to the ati 5770 that you referred to...you mention it works with 10.6 well, and that windows 7 supports it ...2 questions on that
         1) Windows 7 supports" meaning, out of the box windows 7 supports it? or will i have to install drivers still through some update, because again, if that's how i have to do it, then won't work, cuz can't start windows to see anything to install any drivers or run any thing at all...so it would have to just work with initial installation.
2)hardware wise for my Mac Pro 3,1...intel dual quad core xeon, blah blah....will this card work? it's a PCIe and should fit on my board no prob, etc?

  • Aperture screwing with brightness in full screen mode

For some reason whenever I go into full screen mode Aperture keeps adjusting the brightness of my images. Every time I do anything it first looks "normal" then the brightness gets jacked up a few percentage points. When I turn on the Loupe, the image shown inside the loupe is darker (as it should be) as this odd "auto brightness" effect doesn't show up there. When not in full screen mode this doesn't happen. Saving the photo results in the correct image as well. So long story short this is only happening in full screen mode.
I tried disabling the "On screen proofing" but it doesn't seem to have an effect. This is driving me nuts because I have no way to see the ACTUAL image until I save it! Thanks for any ideas you may have.

Another update: I changed my external display to "default" in ColorSync Profiles as recommended in another thread, still have the same problem.
I have now noticed that this phenomenon only occurs when the image being displayed on screen has to be scaled down to fit - so apparently there is something going on with Aperture's image preview being created on the fly?

  • Black screen on boot /w four red LEDs on D-Bracket

Whenever I go switch the power off on my PSU and turn it back on, and after pressing the power button on the front of the computer it doesn't post it acts as if I kept pressing the reset button.
The D-braket shows 4 red leds (which means damaged/not installed processor).
But if I hold the power button to turn if off, then I turn it back on it works flawlessly!
Am I doing something wrong? I didn't have this problem before.
    Specs are below....
    BioHaz

I did a Google search and found this below...
This happens to be my exact same problem, it happens when you turn on the PSU switch then turn on the computer immediately after that. It seems like you just have to wait.
    Is this a common problem?
    Should I worry about this?
    Quote
The old black screen on boot up with four red LEDs on the D-Bracket
    is a fairly common problem.
So far I've only seen four fixes for the problem.
    1.  Defective motherboard (Although this is seldom the problem)
    2.  Power supply is defective, or you forgot to connect the four
wire auxiliary power connecter to the motherboard.  The auxiliary power
connecter must be connected for this motherboard to work.
    3.  Your reset switch is stuck.  Disconnect the reset switch from the
motherboard, then try to boot up.
    4.  This one is weird.  It fixed my problem, however, based on the
troubleshooting you've done, I don't hold out hope it will fix yours.
For some strange reason, some MSI motherboards will not boot
if you've just plugged them in.  Plug in the computer, make sure
the power strip and the switch on the power supply are all in the
"ON" position, then go grab a beer.  After waiting a couple of minutes,
    turn on the computer.
I know it sounds weird.  But I have the same motherboard and CPU.
If I turn on the power strip and attempt to boot my computer immediately,
I get a black screen and four red LEDs.  If I turn on the power strip and
wait a minute or two, the computer boots up every time and works
    perfectly.
    Hope this helps.

  • [BIOS Update Failure] HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j021tx stuck at black screen on startup

    Hello
So I decided to update the BIOS on my laptop because it was on the recommended list of driver updates. It started off smooth at first, but then the screen turned black and just stayed like that for like an hour. Having read from other posts that BIOS updates should take a minute if properly executed, in the fear that my update is not working properly I decided to shut it down. (I had to pull out the battery to shut it down because even the power off button was not working).
But then when I switched it back on the screen remained black forever with the LED near capslock flashing twice. I tried pressing windows key and B key method but didn't make a difference, pulling out the battery and the AC power method didn't work also. I did refer to the HP help document that said "if your capslock LED is flashing twice, it means it is trying to recover the BIOS so just wait until it reboots itself properly". Well I have been waiting for 20 hours now and I am pretty sure this is not going to work out either.
Any help on what I could do at the moment? I don't want to send it to HP to get repaired cuz that will take weeks while I need it working ASAP since my semester at uni has started already and I am an IT major!
And shame on you HP...why recommend it to me when the update is not proven to be 100% safe....
