So, what exactly does "Advertise disks globally using Bonjour" mean?

Just got my APEBS-N on Saturday night at the local store and saw the option under Disks/File Sharning for "Advertise disks globally using Bonjour". Does anyone know what this means or what exactly the results will be? Does un-checking it mean that the disk won't be available over the LAN to the machines running the Airport Disk Utility? The same option appears under printers as well.

OK, well I guess I will have to call...Anyhow, here is the official verbiage from the Apple docs. Notice how it says contact your ISP or Network Administrator for login info? Why would your ISP give you this type of info?
Setting up your base station to use Bonjour
Bonjour, sometimes referred to as zero-configuration networking, is a networking technology that allows devices to automatically discover each other without any configuration, or network setup.
Some versions of the AirPort Extreme Base Station support using Bonjour to advertise services across the Internet. This requires a Dynamic DNS hostname and password you may have received from your Internet service provider (ISP) or network administrator.
Once you have your account information, open AirPort Utility, select your base station in the list, and then enter the base station password if necessary. Click Advanced in the toolbar, and then click Bonjour. Enter the information you received from your ISP or network administrator in the fields provided.
Check with your ISP or network administrator if you need more information about support for Bonjour.

  • Advertise configuration globally using Bonjour

What does this mean "advertise configuration globally using Bonjour" it can be found in the (AE) setup under Airport Tabs- Base Station. If you place a check mark in that field what happens or I say what can happen.
Also I have a mac mini that seems to drop the Airport connection, all other devices seems to keep a connection. Keep in mind I setup the mac mini with its own IP address which is way out of the DHCP range, In addtion the account that the mac mini uses doesn't have Admin rights at all
Looking for someone to explain or point me in the right direction.
last but not lease maybe someone can tell me if this would be the right direction of setting up this network, I would like to be able to remote into system from work to home:
I've setup my network with the following setup:
    1. Cable moden attached to the AE, with radio mode @ 802.11n (802.11b/g)
2 I have a old express attached to a 1gig router by Cat5, and the (AE) is set to bridge mode.
Is this the right setup to have if you want your mac mini on the network wireless? My mac mini is attached to the TV use for a media server only. I do have two other macbooks & a macbook pro.
    thanks,
    rob

Wide-area bonjour makes your bonjour services browsable over the internet. The missing piece, however, is the client configuration tool. Once you have your wide-area bonjour updates going to your DNS server you can use this preference pane to search your DNS server. Once installed and set up for your wide-area bonjour, things like Safari can browse your bonjour services.

  • What exactly does "Java is an interpreted language" mean?

    interpreted as opposed to what?

It means Java (like e.g. Pascal and C) can be interpreted. An interpreter reads byte code and executes its operations. Often Java is interpreted in small devices (cell phones, TV set top boxes). Back when Java first came out, the first Java environments were interpreters.
Java (like e.g. Pascal and C) can also be compiled. One popular compiler is Hotspot, which is included in the Sun JDK. Hotspot is a "dynamic compiler": it compiles often executed code while a Java program is being run, and interprets code that is executed only a few times (e.g. initialization code). In contrast to a dynamic compiler, a JIT (just-in-time) compiler doesn't include an interpreter; a JIT compiles everything. IBM, BEA and Oracle are other major Java compiler vendors.
There are also so-called "static compilers", which write the compiled code into a file. These usually produce less efficient code than JITs or dynamic compilers, because they cannot perform optimizations like non-static method inlining or using CPU version-specific instructions.
Often the claim "Java is interpreted" is a hold-over from the early days; people heard of the first interpreter and it stuck.

thank you thank you for taking an interest. this is so frustrating.
i only have apple keyboard, mighty mouse, and 20 inch cinema display connected. this morning took out memory and tried to boot up with individual pairs in the first bank. first the (2)256, the (2) 1g, and then the other (2) 1g modules. everytime I get the weird fuzzy wheel under the logo after a while, black screen flashes, then grey apple logo fuzzy screen then black forever.
I ran tiger updates this morn. still will only boot to safe mode. then tried to run leopard disk to install it
will not boot from leopard disk.
tried safe boot, then doulble click install leopard, restart, then the saga repeats with the pixely red square around the wheel.
these are fresh drives with only what came on instll disk loaded.
thanks again for taking an interest.
i love this system(well at least i did). I want to install leopard on my powerbook too but am terrified to do so right now since it is working and I have work to do. Can't afford to have no computer to do my work on...self employment is great?!
This is making me crazy. I anxiously await your words of wisdom.

  • What exactly does the global switch command line do ?

    Hello All
Just foraging in the dark world of APP-V. I have a question which I cannot find answer for through google.
There are powershell commands to publish an APP-V application globally. What exactly does the global switch do ?
I understand it makes the application available to everyone on the machine for anyone who logs onto that machine.
However in the absence of this global switch the application is still available to all users who logon to that particular machine. So what exactly is the reason for using the global switch ?
    Thanks

Correct, the global switch makes the application accessable for all users logging on to that system.
This feature is required for some packages, like Office. But it is ofter used for applications used by everyone, like Adobe Reader.
However in the absence of this global switch the application is still available to all users who logon to that particular machine. So what exactly is the reason for using the global switch ?
A package can be added to the system but until it is published a user cannot start it. They won't see any shortcuts in their startmenu/desktop/etc.
So after you added the package to the system, it must be published to a user or globally (every user) to start it.

  • When attempting  to set a password on my Airport Extreme guest network i get this "Advertising a service globally using Bonjour requires a global hostname." What can i do to set password on this network?

When attempting to set a password on my Airport Extreme Guest Network i get this "Advertising a service globally using Bonjour requires a global hostname." What does it mean. Or what i need to do to correct it.

When trying to troubleshoot my problem I discovered a forum that was saying certain NTFS drives work just fine
Apple support says that an NTFS or exFAT drive cannot be used when connected to the AirPort Extreme.
I suppose it is possible that someone might have been using some type of special software on the drive that might perform a "conversion", but without more details, it is hard to know.
Note: ExFAT and NTFS formats aren't supported.

  • My iPhone 4s was stolen this weekend and I did the Remote Lock.  What exactly does that do?  Also, if i do the Remote Wipe will that erase all of my data and impede anyone from ever using the phone?

My iPhone 4s was stolen this weekend and I did the Remote Lock.  What exactly does that do?  Also, if i do the Remote Wipe will that erase all of my data and impede anyone from ever using the phone?

The remote lock locks the iphone with a passcode that you set. By remote wiping the device it will simply restore it and clear it of all its data, but by doing this it will prevent you tracking it and communicating with it (e.g. remote locking it) in the future

  • What exactly does the M7 coprocessor do in the iPad air, and what apps can use it?

I've been trying a few 3rd party apps which use the m7 in the iPhone 5s. None of them work. Also there seem to be no apps both built in motion activity under the privacy menu in settings.
My question is, what exactly does the M7 coprocessor in the ipad air?

  • Apple_Boot Recovery HD partition - what exactly does it do?

On a new MacBook Air (Mid 2011) there is a partiton on the internal solid state drive that shows up (you can see it by using Terminal, then type "diskutil list" at the prompt) as Apple_Boot Recovery HD  650.0 MB   disk0s3.
My question is what exactly does this partition provide?  Is the Internet still required to accomplish a "Reinstall Mac OS X"?
Does the partition just provide a quick way to reach the Mac OS X Utilities pane (see below) when restarting your computer while holding down the Command and R keys?
If the partition is not on a MacBook Air (Mid 2011) do you reach exactly the same functionality when you are required to download the Mac OS X Utilities pane from the Internet?
Once at the Mac OS X Utilities pane, would you be required to use the Internet to accomplish a "Reinstall Mac OS X" even with the presence of the the Apple_Boot Recovery HD partition?

    2. You can boot from any Recovery HD regardless of its location provided it's connected. For example you can use the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant -  OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery Disk Assistant - to put a Recovery HD volume onto a small USB flash drive with at least 2 GBs of space. You can install Lion onto a 16 GB USB flash drive in which case the installer will include a Recovery HD partition.
    3. If you boot from the Recovery HD then the reinstallation is by Internet. If you have your own bootable USB Lion flash drive, then the reinstallation will take place from the flash drive. Here's how the flash drive is made:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.

  • What exactly does "rejuvenate my system" do??

have never run it, but didn't it to change any settings, etc... What exactly does it do and to what files/programs?? Thanks for the info

    untmom2003,
Description of Rejuvenation copied from the Rescue & Recovery Help window:
    Rejuvenating your system
When you select to rejuvenate your system, the Rescue and Recovery(TM) program optimizes system performance by completing the following actions:
Performs a new incremental backup of your system. This backs up all new or changed files so that all current files are saved in a backup.
Defragments your hard drive and backup files. This maximizes the performance of your hard drive and backups so that all your data is stored in the same place on your hard disk. This enables your data to be located and displayed more quickly.
Restores your operating system and application files from a backup of your choice. This enables you to choose which backup to use to restore your computer. You might want to choose a particular backup that you know to be free of viruses, adware or spyware. Or, if you are having serious problems with your operating system or applications, you might choose to restore files that you backed up before you started having problems.
Restores you current settings and some personal data from the registry. This enables your computer to retain the features that you had previously set up.
The rejuvenation process maintains your current settings and data while helping to eliminate viruses, adware and spyware. Applications installed or uninstalled after the selected backup was created might need to be installed again to function correctly. This operation might take some time.

  • So what exactly does limited to "one app" mean with a Pro account and the new prices?

So it seems Pro has dropped in price but it is now limited to "one App".
So what exactly does that "one App" mean?
Only one tablet version or one phone version for a certain title?
Or you can have a tablet & phone version including android & iOS for that one title?

I think that everyone received it just now…
Changes to Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, Professional Edition
Effective immediately, all customers who newly purchase or renew Digital Publishing Suite (DPS), Professional Edition, will be able to publish only one app per license of DPS Professional Edition.
Under this policy change, Professional Edition customers can publish an unlimited number of issues (.folio files) to a single app and distribute those issues based on purchased fulfillment bundles.
An app created with a single license of DPS Professional Edition can be distributed to any or all of the marketplaces that DPS supports, including the Apple App Store (and Newsstand), Google Play, Amazon Appstore, and the Windows Store.
In conjunction with this policy change, Adobe is reducing the price of a Professional Edition license to $4,800 USD annually (€3,600/¥480,000) or to $400 per month (€300/¥40,000) and will include 1,000 fulfillments annually. The number of fulfillments included with a monthly subscription remain unchanged.
This policy does not apply to test or demo apps published using Professional Edition. The one-app-per-license policy applies only to an app published to a supported marketplace(s).
If you are an agency, upon your renewal or purchase of Professional Edition, you can create only one app per Professional Edition license. If you have multiple clients for whom you are creating apps, either you as the agency or your client must purchase a Professional Edition license for each app published to a supported marketplace(s).
If you are an existing Professional Edition customer and choose to renew your Professional Edition license at the end of your annual agreement, these changes, including the lower price point and 1,000 fulfillments, apply at that time. These changes do not apply to your existing DPS Professional Edition agreement and take effect only if you renew your license.
DPS Professional Edition customers can continue to create unlimited Single Edition apps, which is unchanged under the new policy. A Single Edition app is defined as an app that includes one built-in or embedded folio.
If you expect to publish three or more apps annually, we encourage you to contact your local reseller to discuss pricing for a multi-year Enterprise Edition license.
Enterprise Edition offers additional functionality and benefits not available through Professional Edition. These include app customization, integration with back-end business systems, in-app marketing tools, targeted content based on user entitlement, and the ability to publish apps privately.

  • What "exactly" does the Brightness setting in Print do?

What "exactly" does the Brightness setting in the Print module do?
I know it's a controversial button, especially now that there are proofing options available. Also, since you're using it "blind" it's impossible to know how much or what it's really doing.
Does anyone know if it's e.g.. the same as going to quick develop and going up on "exposure", or "brightness", or "shadows"... How exactly is it brightening the image, and is +100 a full stop or how is it calibrated?
    Thanks,
    Alan.

    Ooops,
Obviously there is NO brightness control in LR...is the print adjustment similar to an exposure adjustment or more like moving the "shadows" and "whites" adjustments (which if I understand corrrectly, moves tones above or below mid tones, but not highlights or blacks)?

  • What exactly does "out-broadcasting" do?

What exactly does "out-broadcasting" do? Is it where one network totally knocks out another?
Some companies are going down different routes, such
as Netgear's MIMO RangeMax routers, however these are
not necessarily compatible with Apple Macs and they
can also stop other people's networks by
out-broadcasting them (which may be the reason you
    are having issues).
    iFelix
Is it like cross country driving and two different radio stations come in and out at the same frequency, and not necessarily an overlap (hearing both simultaneously)?
Is remote RF interference worse than sun spots & solar storms?
I have a question, which dog wins? I'll clarify: Is it the one with the more watts, the more amplitude, the wider frequency, or the modulating frequency who wins and knocks out the other guy's wireless network? Or is it far more complex, 4-dimensional mapping (the 4th dimension being over time)?
    Thank you,
    Gino

In order to achieve increased speed, wireless routers based on the proposed 802.11n specification (the first draft of which has been rejected by the consortium for just this issue, among other things), use more of the sidebands on the 2.4GHz band than the individual channels used by either 802.11b or 802.11g (in the US there are 11 such sideband channels allowed). Indeed there are only 2 channels being used in 802.11n routers, and these channels are so wide that they are knocking off 802.11b and 802.11g routers in the area.

  • What exactly does Restore do?

Forgive me if this has been covered before, but I did search and didn't find my specific answers.
I synced my bookmarks with my Safari browser on my PC. All is good, except that the sync also copied the default bookmark folders "bookmark bar" and "bookmarks", which are both empty and redundant on my Touch. They are listed 2nd and 3rd on the Touch bookmarks list, taking up valuable space! But, since they're default folders, I can not delete them, just like the "History" folder on the Touch.
Anyway, I've read that the only way to remove them is to restore my iPod, and never sync bookmarks from Safari again. (IMHO it seems completely crazy that syncing from one Safari to another would be so problematic!)
So, what exactly does Restore do? I know it resets the ipod to factory settings, but what happens to all my bookmarks and webclippings? Is there anyway to back those up and edit my bookmarks manually to remove the two default folders?? Because if not, it seems that this wouldn't be a fix at all, instead just a big ol pain in the arse. This is a very annoying bug and I hope it is fixed in the next update. :/
    Any help is very appreciated!

Assuming you're using Windows (going by your system specs)...if you have bookmarks you need to preserve only for the touch, export all your current Internet Explorer (IE) bookmarks/favorites to a file and back that up. Then delete ALL bookmarks in IE & sync your bookmarks only using iTunes (IE has to be open for the bookmark sync to work properly). Your bookmarks will sync with IE and only the ones that were on your touch should be in your current IE bookmarks. Now export those bookmarks to a different file. When you want to restore the touch and it's bookmarks, sync the touch and select the option to over-write/replace the bookmarks on the touch. To get your Windows IE bookmarks back, restore from the first backup file you made. Note that the sort order after importing the bookmarks back into IE will be alphabetical rather than by when the bookmark was added. I don't think there's any getting around that.
As far as deleting the default folders you're looking to get rid of, I don't believe that it's currently possible.
