So What Now with Help Formats ???

Well... the launch of Vista and the death of Winhelp has
really shafted us... and I'm sure a lot of others too. Current
situation as I understand it is :
1) Winhelp is dead.
2) HTML Help is supported but is functionally inferior in the
following ways :
- Window position cannot be specified as a percentage of the
screen (pixels only) which is awkward for secondary windows as we
need to support everything from 1024x768 to 1920x1280.
- Context sensitive help support is dreadful compared to
winhelp - no formatted text, bullets, graphics, hyperlinks, etc...
- Microsoft refuse to allow CHM files to be launched over a
network so a server install is out (without a naughty registry
hack).
3) Webhelp is supported but rumoured to be on the way out in
terms of Robohelp support. Is this true ? Its also extremely clunky
to ship with software due to number of files and, AFAICS, offers no
context sensitive help functionality. I guess we could get round
the former by using .MHT files but reasonable support for context
sensitive help is a must.
4) The Windows Vista Help directory seems to use 'h1s' files.
What on earth is this ? For sure Vista has nicely formatted Context
Sensitive Help but how ? Is this the new, much publicised MS Help
format ?
Basically, we need a sensible single file help system for the
app and context sensitive help with hyperlinks & formatting.
Anybody have suggestions on what the trend is here - is there even
a single format solution for what must be a common applications
requirement ?
Are Adobe planning their own Winhelp support now that MS have
ditched it ?
Are MS planning a new Help System ?
Thanks,
Iain.

I find it fascinating that Microsoft distributes winhelp.exe
(16-bit
WinHelp) as part of Vista but stubbornly refuses to
distribute winhlp32.exe
(32-bit WinHelp). Apparently Microsoft still needs/wants to
use WinHelp
popups so they're keeping the 16-bit WinHelp executable as
part of Vista.
So now here's my question... Robohelp has its own .dll
(RoboEx32.dll) that
it allows us to distribute. My understanding is that this is
what allows us
to have the tripane view. Having been mostly away from help
development for
the last several years but about to enter the fray again,
what happens if I
develop a RoboHelp Help2000 project and load project.hlp,
project.cnt and
the RoboHelp .dll file onto a Vista machine (which only has
winhelp.exe)??
Does this work?
Thanks

  • I use to keep all my Mini DV Tapes WHAT now with AVCHD Format ?

I started shooting video way back in the seventies using tape and graduated to Mini DV in the nineties. NOW I have upgraded to a Panasonic TM700 AVCHD camera that records to flash memory.
I always kept my tapes as backups, never re-using them. Now with files on flash memory, how can I backup my unedited video shoots?
I am not keen on backing up to Hard Disks.
Should I just copy my originals to a BluRay data disk?
What are you doing out there?

Once a show is edited and the movie is made...how important is it to keep the original footage?  (The movie becomes the footage)
As other people have noted, improved technology can mean superior re-edits using the original maximum quality sources.
For shooternz, a specific example - nearly 10 years ago I got a 5 minute sequence of a pair of Wrybills mating in the Ashburton River near Lake Heron, using a lightweight tripod in a full-blown Nor'wester.  This was very shaky as gusts hit the camera, and the original edit was poor.  Better stabilisation software - Mercalli rather than the original Dynapel SteadyHand - has given me a greatly improved edit.

  • WHAT now with OSX search function?

Okay, i just searched one of my hard drives for pdf files, and search returns 0 files.
HOW can this be!? I would use profanity here because it's plainly warranted, but Apple doesn't like that. I think from now on, i'll use the term "OS X" as a substitute for profanity.
So, I am looking at several pdf files in an OS X folder on this OSX drive, and i know there are more.
So what the OS X is going on? Thanks.

You should use spotlight to stop indexing an an hd.  Spotlight puts a file on the hd that says do not index.   I wrote this up awhile ago.
In an this post I will describe how to perform a classic Mac OS search. You may perform the search with or without the spotlight database. This search falls under the smart folder implementation introduced with Tiger.  I have done all my testing with Mac OS 10.4.11. I assume this will work with any version of Tiger or Leopard.
The results will be slightly different with a spotlight database on the partition and without a database on the partition. With a database, you will not see Unix hidden files. You may be able to use all of the spotlight special find features. I did not test much with the spotlight special fields. Without a database, using the special features nulls out the search and the "Search for" field seems to give the same result as using the name field.
This search technique was obscured by all the hoopla over spotlight. Authors of Tiger books avoided mentioning the Classic search interface. When I looked in Leopard books I noticed some authors put back information on the Classic search interface.
How do you get to this interface?
Perform the Classic Mac OS search with a Spotlight database.
Click on the desktop to access the Finder.
click on File then click on find.
Pick what folder you wished to search.  Click on Others... to select a folder. Click on the plus sign to select the folder you wish to search.  Be sure the selected folder in the list is the only one checked.  In the first example I picked:  /Users/mac/Desktop/iMac/z-find/
The "Search for" field on the first line is used for spotlight. Avoid using this box.
Click on the plus symbol to the right of an input options. Click on the double arrow to the right of the first option. Go down to the name field.
You can now search for the contents of a filename. I searched for name contains: bash-
To see the Classic display format, click on the three line icon which is located on the upper left of the window.  There is a small refresh icon on the lower right of the window.

I created the z-find folder on my Macintosh-HD then copy it over to my Spotless flash drive.  This means both searches searched for it the same file names.  See below for the list of file names.
This is the result of the search:
    bash-backup-copy-invisible-attr.html
    bash-backup-inside-bash-copy.html
    bash-backup-inside-bash.html
    bash-backup.html
    bash-batChmod.html
    bash-battery__yellow__4k.html     {labeled with the Yellow attribute}
    bash-copy    {folder}
    bash-copy-invisible-attr    {folder}
    bash-folder__green    {folder and labeled with the Green attribute}
    ping_command-bash-copy.html
You can create a smart folder to take you directly to the search panel.  Just click on the Save icon to the right of the window near the top. For readers of books, you should look under smart folders.

There are some downsides. Initially, the search will find both visible and invisible Mac OS files. However, the search seems to get confused between visible and invisible files when you select the visibility option. It seems to get the visible correct when you use visible but when you add invisible things get confused. Sometimes it will find invisible files and sometimes it won't. I used both the Unix invisible files and the Mac OS X visiblity attribute.
In putting the same search in the upper right-hand-corner spotlight search and in the Search for field, I did not get the same results. The spotlight search returned a 182 items while the with Search for field returned 179 items. The Search for field seemed to miss items in the mail boxes. With the Search for search you could display spotlight results in the classic format.
I do not know how this works internally. I successfully a search on my fat32 flash drive.
Perform the Classic Mac OS search without the spotlight database.
If you turn off spotlight indexing on a volume and delete the spotlight index, then Mac OS Tiger reverts to the prior Mac OS search facility. In the preferences for spotlight, you let searching continued on the partition.
    Here is what I did:
    I installed the spotless application.
    http://www.fixamac.net/software/spot/
I use spotless to configure spotlight. Click on disabled indexing then click on  delete index files.
Spotless creates the .Spotlight-V100 directory with the _IndexPolicy.plist and _rules.plist to prevent indexing on the partition.
    mac $ pwd
    /Volumes/Spotless
    mac $ ls -ld .Spotlight-V100

    Limitations:
Does not search in Unix hidden folders. That is folders beginning with a period (.) .
Sometimes will find files beginning with a period (.).
Does not find Mac OS invisible files.
Using the special features nulls out the search.
The Search for  field seems to give the same result as using the name field.

  • What wrong with my "format a field as a percentage" javascript?

    Hi folks,
I'm new to creating forms with Acrobat, and I'm trying to format a text field as a percentage.
    I have a few questions:
1.) Do I want to add my javascript as a javascript under the "Action" tab or as a validation script under the "Validation" tab?
2.) If I add this as an "Action", what do I use as a "trigger"?
    3.) Here's my script which doesn't work:
    var percentage = this.getField("Principal_1_Ownership").value;
    if (percentage < "101") { Principal_1_Ownership.value = Principal_1_Ownership.value + "%"; }
    else {
    Principal_1_Ownership.value = Principal_1_Ownership.value * .10 + "%";
Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Comments? Suggestions?
    Thank you.

  • I purchased Acrobat 7.0 Standard in 2006 and registered that subscription. What now with a new computer?

I purchased Acrobat 7.0 Standard in 2006 and registered that subscription.  That product ran on my older Mac PowerBook (OS 10.4.11).  I am now upgrading to a new MacBook Pro (OS 10.10.2), from the OS 10.4.11 PowerBook, which is too old for Migration Assistant to transfer the Acrobat application to the MacBook, so I must manually migrate — drag and drop — which I am told will not enable transfer of applications, so I must re-download, and that of course must be something compatible with the new machine.  Does my existing subscription entitle me to download an equivalent to the Acrobat 7.0 Standard on my new computer?

    Hi Rob,
Acrobat 7 is most unlikely to run on Mac Yosemite 10.10.2. It has not been tested and is unsupported for this OS.
Recommend you to purchase the latest subscription for Acrobat 11 Pro

  • Whats up with help?

I installed the product and no help the help would not work. I spent an hour looking at the Adobe site until I found the help viewer but the help function on the application does not work still. Since the help viewer, and Premier elements also seem not to be able to be minimized on my monitor I must switch back and fourth if I want to see any instructions rather than simply have then side by side where it is easy to use.
I went to download the PDF  help using both the link on the web site in the help menu and also the different link that came with the manual but in both cases the PDF is "not found".
How does Adobe expect anyone to use a product if they can not get something as basic as a PDF link working that is on their web site and printed in the product package to come up?
I think the fact that screens can not be minimized or sized and the non-functioning help or lack of working links on the Adobe web site is a show stopper.
A very poor offering and after hours of aggravation and no response from Adobe I am about to give up.
All I guess I can do is remove the applications, dispute the charge on the credit card and force OfficeMax to take it back as defective product regardless of software policy.

That is certainly an odd behaviour. Works fine in PRE7. Double-check though that the application is NOT maximised when you try to move it - the Adobe custom markers are not as clear as standard Windows. In the image following the maximized window is shown:
Even when you click to change the state to 'window' PRE7 remains in the same position, so it may not be immediately obvious that you CAN drag the edges to resize. I'm very surprised that you cannot minimize the window. That should work regardless of the window state.

Ok, Below is what worked for me somewhat.
Okay ... try downloading and saving a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe to your PC from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Now download a trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/download.php
Open the iTunesSetup.exe with WinRAR, and try to run the standalone install of Apple Application Support from the AppleApplicationSupport.msi you find in there.
It works now BUT there are still problems.  It is not allowing or recognizing my Cd/DVD player and i CANT burn.  Looking still for this fix.

  • Large iDVD Project (help with iMovie formats, time totals, quality)

    Hi,
I am in the process of finishing up a large DVD project. I went on a six month backpacking trip, and have lots of photos/small clips to make a DVD from. I will have a main menu in iDVD with submenus for each country (Mexico, Cook Islands, NZ, Australia, Vietnam, Thailand, India)
On each submenu will be around 4-5 movies of around 2-5 minutes each.
I created movies using iMovie (imported sound-less iPhoto slideshows 640x480 expored as MOV file) and added captions, music etc in iMovie. Each 'movie' is about 1-5 minutes long.
    First question:
What is the best format to export these movies in? I will be adding them to iDVD. But when I export them, they are around 100-700Mb each depending on time of the movie. I used the expert settings (to Quicktime Mov) using the following settings:
    Video:
    Compression: Mpeg-4 Video
    Quality: Best
    Frame Rate: 60
    key frame rate: 24
    Dimensions: 720x526 4:3
    audio:
    format: AAC
    Sample rate: 48.000Khz
    Bit Rate 128
    Stereo
In my iDVD project - the menu loops are maximum 30 seconds each, with the audio cut to the same length (ie. not trimmed in the menu - the actual mp3 added is 30seconds etc)
    Now, big question is:
Do I have a total of 2 hours for everything? All menus, and all movies ? Is there ANY way of calculating this in iDVD or do I have to do it manually (estimate) ???
I notice with iDVD 8.0 it has a indicator of the space available etc. I have iDVD 6.0 so that doesn't help me now I guess?
What I need to ask is that - maybe using expert settings to mov files is unnecessary? What would you recommend as the export settings?
I have been working on the iMovie projects for months and can re-export them all in different format if need be, and can simply re-add the movies to iDVD. I have set up the shell of the DVD in iDVD but not added the movies yet (I have the placeholders there for them).
Anyway - hopefully I haven't blabbed on too much that someone out there can offer some advice?
    Cheers and THANK YOU!
    Alessandro

Best Performance: For projects up to one hour
Best Quality: For projects up to two hours
If your project is longer than one hour, you have to use Best Quality. Generally, the quality will be fine but the closer your get to that two hour limit, the more possibility you have of seeing some quality hits.
I deal with lots of long projects and generally if a project is longer than 90 minutes (specially since my projects have lots of fast motion, low light, etc) I split them up over two DVDs, keeping each under the one hour limit. That does give you your best quality option

  • Help formatting a play script (people talking) with Pages.

How can I write a play script with certain formats. This is what I want to do:
Person 1: Make it work like this. I want the dialog to wrap around like this
................Like this. So it stays even with the line above. I do not want to
................use the space bar to make it look like this.
Yeah, could someone help me use pages formatting to make it look like that, without using the space bar. Thanks. I had to use periods because the message board would change the spacing.

This is called a *hanging indent* .
    +Menu > View > Show Ruler+
Select the paragraph you want to format.
On the ruler there is a blue flat bar stacked on top of a down pointing triangle. The triangle sets the left indent, ie how far in the paragraph aligns from the left edge. The flat bar sets where the *first line* of the paragraph starts.
Drag the 2 together in as far as you like. Next drag the flat bar back to the left edge.
Type "Person 1: tab Make it work like this…"
It will now wrap back with the left inset, until you hit the return again which will be the start of a new paragraph and then aligns back to the far left. The tab pushes the text after "Person 1:" into line with the rest of the paragraph.
To have a *line break* that does not cause a paragraph end, use a *"soft return"* which you get by typing the shift + return keys.
Or you can make a 2nd style that has no hanging indent for paragraphs that follow the original "Person 1:"
Save these as styles and you can set an +f key+ to switch between them.

  • To function with the format VTR. Can anyone help?

ok i have final cut pro but i use a dvd recorder to record all of my shows and I was trying to figure out if Final cut Pro has a way to function with the format VTR. Can anyone help?

If you want to record directly to the DVD recorder, you'll most likely find that most DVD recorders with a Firewire input will NOT record directly from your Mac.  I'm only aware of a couple of models (long since discontinued) that would allow it.  So what you have to do it to connect your Mac via Fireiwre to a digital-to-analog converter (most any DV camcorder, VTR or DV converter box), then connect the converting device to your DVD recorder using the analog connections.
If you want to capture from the DVD recorder (hard drive or disc), you can usually do that via Firewire directly to your Mac: in FCP, set Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and use Capture Now. Do not expect FCP to control the DVD recorder like it can with camcorders and VTRs.

  • Help with re-formatting a PDF for easy printing by anyone?

    Hello,
I used a template to create a new professional resume, and edited this template in Adobe Fireworks CS3.  It looks good now, but when I try and create a PDF with it, I can't seem to figure out how to make sure it will print properly on a 8.5x11 without the document shrinking or getting skewed.  Can someone help or recommend a service that can optimize my PNG or PDF file to that whoever I send it to will be able to easily view and print it on most any computer?
    Thanks!

    Michael,
Thanks for your response.  My OS is Leopard I believe, but am not at my computer right now.  I took a template from a website which must've been in PNG format, and the default application to edit it with was Fireworks I guess. I have it both in PNG and PDF format, I'll forward it to you if you have a minute to take a look.  My whole idea was to create a newer PDF resume with style/format that will stand out far above from my word resume (boring).
    Thanks,
    Jack

There is obviously something not right... But to determine what the issue is, it needs to be looked at...
And the Apple Store would probably be the best place...
    Just my opinion...
