So what's the deal w/AAC protected/unprotected files ?

I'm a long time user, and so I have been buying from iTunes store for years. I have been checking into my music files, and I see that many, probably more than 2GB, are "AAC protected" files in the info section.....
I was just given a Sony mp3 walkman player as a gift. It will play UN-protected files only. I'm wondering if I have workarounds/options, or will I just have to go on using my iPod which doesn't have the 8GB capacity of my new gift?
Also, is it possible to convert iTunes music videos into a format that will work. The player says it supports the H-264 codec (unprotected, I'm assuming)
BTW: this IS in fact a question about what to do with my iTunes library so that I won't lose my music. You know, I backed up data files on my old iBook hard drive and now some of them don't want to be put back on my new HD?
I just want them all to be Unprotected files when I get done.
Any help appreciated,
Garth.

What you paid for was a track with DRM. DRM-encumbered files are useless outside of iTunes, so getting a useful track for just 30 cents might be a pretty good deal.
Dear ed2345,
Thanks for the input, but I really disagree with you there. Not the part about the 30 cents, but the first sentence where you put me straight w/" What you paid for......etc." Yes, it is a fact, and I know that now, obviously. I think that the original version of iTunes should have been advertised as; "Buy music from our iTunes store that can be played ONLY on our mp3 players"......but it wasn't, and never is, marketed as such, is it? I know that I don't have any special education in computers, being self-taught, and I know that I paid for that music in good faith. Did you ever once see an AD that said, "But this only plays on iPod!". No, they said, "you can play them on your iPod", but neglected to mention that it can't be played on any other. They aren't the only ones guilty of this kind of bunk, I know. Maybe one day we'll live in a world where this kind of half-info. advertising will be against the law. Heck , even the news only gives half of the story any more, and people should stand up and demand the details, because you know the old saying is actually true, "The Devil is in the details!"
As for the tunes, I paid for them in good faith, and they should be mine. Why else would anyone pay the same price when they could've had the whole CD at an actual store. I think that they reached a saturation point where people got aggravated and wise, and the jig was up, so they removed it, but not before letting the market get< " as Jimmy Stuart says.
Not to be a jerk or anything, but I'm just in no mood for a lot of corporate cheerleader talk. I'm not buying the extra 30cents on principle. I'll just chuck em first!

  • What is the best way to protect .class files on server?

I've been working on my website project for quite some time, years in fact. Now I'm at the point where I'm looking into signing up with a web host provider and testing the site live.
I have some questions and concerns though. My site is made up of Java Servlets and JSP pages.
My foremost concern is protecting my code. Many suggest obfuscating. If I understand the process correctly, it involves making the code harder to decompile. I also understand that obfuscating isn't a guarantee in protecting code. If someone really wants to use the code, they'll figure out a way to.
So are there any other options available to protect my code?? I would like to consider as many options as possible.
Once it is on the web host server, anyone can have access to it. Hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question - Microsoft Word comes with the option to password protect files from being opened, is there not by now some way to implement the same sort of feature with files uploaded to a server?
    Your input is appreciated.

    ejp wrote:

You need to acquire a proper understanding of a web server and its configuration. Your problem can be solved via correct configuration of the server. Nothing to do with obfuscation. So your telling me that once I've uploaded all my .class files and everything else to my host provider, that the people running the server do not have access to it? I find this hard to believe....
What exactly would I be looking to configure on the server??? Please explain.

  • I opened a file on my desktop that I don't remember putting there.  It turned out to be a keychain certificate from a client of ours.  Does this mean that they were spying on me?  What is the deal with that?  Any ideas?

I opened a file on my desktop that I don't remember putting there. We use many photos and I thought it was a photo file I was looking for. It turned out to be a keychain certificate from a client of ours.  Does this mean that they were spying on me?  What is the deal with that?  Any ideas?

Interesting tid bit.  I created an AAC of the original file, deleted the original MP3 from my library and also deleted the Clean matched track from the icloud.
Result is that it matched with the explicit version of Mrs. Officer this time.
What I am curious about is which songs this is happening for. I've went thru a few batched of about 500 songs at a time and redownloaded in 256k for many tracks. Sadly we don't have people to bring this to our attention and I have so much music that it's impossible to go thru every song to make sure I am getting the right version.

  • What's the deal with the video format?

Hello! What is the deal with the video format? Does it mean I have to code the videos for 640*480 ? It won't accept any other size? What size do I need to select for widescreen format?
With Quicktime pro I've been able to encode videos with a very nice resolution and small size, then try to synch them to the ipod touch and then the error, it can't be played. I use the .mov format, I like it more but if I have to use .mp4 then I'll use it.
    Thanks for the help!

According to Apple's Specification, these are your video choices
H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.

  • What is the best way to protect it?

I HATE getting scratches or any sort of cosmetical damage on my devices, I am getting my first MBP on Friday, and want to know what the best way to keep it like new is?
It won't be leaving the house regularly for a while, but I do have a neoprene case which I think it will fit for travelling anyway.
I have seen many people with cases on their Macs, I don't know what the proper name is for them, but they are like hard shells attached to the back of the lid, are these recommended? I have read about some heat issues with it.
What is the best way to protect the screen? I don't ever touch it, so I don't think that will be a problem, but cleaning dust off etc.?
Lastly, will the trackpad wear away? My laptop's trackpad has slightly faded from it being used a lot, are MBP's prone to this too? I will try to use a mouse as much as possible.
Are there any other things I should know about? I read that the bottom can get scratched easily too? I would only use it on a flat surface, so something like my lap, so depending on how soft the metal is... It can't be that bad can it?
    Thanks!

    Wouldnt buy that, nope
Hard cases protect the finish of your macbook, but they trap in heat, ....many here have spoken on same.
A major part of a macbook pro, especially a RETINA PRO is dissipating heat from the alloy case, which this case prevents from happening.
Yes, youre stopping all the scratch,.....and likewise keeping the Macbook from dissipating a lot of heat.
When I said INCASE, I meant this:

  • What is the deal with the Zen Aurvana headphones?

Can anyone explain this to me? (Please note that I am a review addict, and look at reviews before buying anything so I don't make a regretful choice. One of the things that sealed my decision on the Zen was the 8.3 from CNET.)
I've been deciding to upgrade from the Zen's EP-480 set for a few weeks now, and it's a tossup between the Aurvana and the EP-630.
Problem is, everywhere seems to report that the Aurvana is very average. Looking at customer reviews on retail sites and media critics, they all barely rate the Aurvana above average. Looking in the same sources at the EP-630, it has a close to perfect score from various ones.
Now, here's what blows my mind. I stumble upon Creative's European site, and the reception for the Aurvana is better than the EP-630 set. Other countries seem to love the Aurvana more than the EP-630, while the US does not. See for yourself:

I use it quite a bit for zooming in and out (by dragging up and down) but you have to be careful you don't move left or right when doing this as it then becomes a bit unpredictable as you say...
If you just want to use the playhead for dragging left and right (and if you can't find a pref to turn it off) you'll just have to be careful to drag only in the horizontal axis and not up or down..

  • çnow won't sync back to my iPad because it says I don't have permission on this computer. I don't want to download it from iTunes again because it took up a lot of bandwidth. What's the deal

I bourght "E O Wilson's Life on Earth" and backed it up to my iMac. Now it won't sync back to my iPad because it says I don't have permission on this computer. I don't want to download it from iTunes again because it took up a lot of bandwidth. What's the deal?
I also made the big mistake of downloading a free book about the making of the movie "Frankenweenie." Mega-memory eater. Now it wants to download additions and started to do so---now says paused. I can't delete the bloody thing. Seems like nothing I've downloaded, including free books, can be deleted. How can I get rid of this garbage?
Is there any way to just transfer my music from my iMac to my iPad and not affect anything else on my iPad? The whole iBooks thing is just a mess as far as I'm concerned. Is there any way to just drag and drop?

"I have logged in to my itunes account on a different computer and none of my purchased music is showing up."
Correct.  it does not magially appear in other places.  It will only be where you put it.
"I also have plugged my iphone in to get updates but it says I will lose all media and apps if I don't update on the computer where  I sync everything. "
Correct as well.  Iphone will sync with one computer at a time.  Syncing to another will erase the current content.
You need to copy everything ( itunes library/contacts/pics/calendars/files/docs) from the old computer, or your backup copy of the old one, to the new one.

I am attempting to download the new update for my iPad. It gets approx half thru the process and then I get an error message. States that I cannot

    What's the deal?

There have also been others reporting problems with analog VGA connected monitors. If your monitor also supports DVI, then you may want to use the supplied HDMI to DVI adapter or switch to a Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and a good DVI cable.

  • What is the best way to protect my new Macbook Pro?

I finally have a shinny new 13" Macbook Pro Rentina and I'm wondering what is the best way to protect it? I am considering either a hard case or a sleeve but which one is the best? This thing is worth more than my car and I can't afford for anything to happen to it! Hard case? Sleeve? Both?

Congratulations on your MBPR! I had the exact same question when I bought mine. I ended up using a hard case and a sleeve. For the case I went with the Kuzy Hard Case and an Incase Deluxe Sleeve. Using a sleeve and case is great and I feel like my Macbook is very well protected and I am no longer scared of breaking it with this setup! Best of luck!

    Thank you for your response.
After searching around for any pointers to my problem, the above fixes I listed were the things that came closest to maybe addressing the issue, that I was able to locate. But since none worked, and as you pointed out, it is now clear they will only help towards viewing sent images rather than helping with inserting any images in the body of the email, which is the problem I suddenly started facing today.
Coming to your suggestion, on opening the Write window, the Insert choice on the menu bar is indeed available. And I had already tried using that, by clicking on the '''Insert ----> Image''' option listed. That opens
up the "Image Properties" box but using that has not resolved the matter either. It results in an image box getting inserted within the email but without the actual image itself.
Plus, normally I am able to use the '''Paste''' function in the Edit menu or through right-click, but today the (Cut/Copy/Paste) functions have gone inactive, thereby disallowing me to use that to place an image within the email.

  • My iphone 4s suddenly displays images from Yahoo, Google, and Flickr at low resolution. The camera on my phone works fine, but any web related photo content is now pixelated and low res, what's the deal?

My iphone 4s suddenly displays images from Yahoo, Google, and Flickr at a low resolution. I have IOS 7.0.4. My phone camera works fine, but any web based photo content from Safari, Yahoo images, Google images, and Flickr all come in pixelated and low res. What's the deal?

It happened to me but later I figured out that cellular signal was not that great and so the Internet was very slow. It took me about 2 minutes to get the full resolution picuture on either of the app you've described. Try to get faster internet either by wifi or good signal and then check.

  • What's the deal with dual processors???

The whole dual processor thing has been bugging me for some time now. If I have a dual 500mhz processor, is it the same as a 1.0ghz processor, worse than one, better than one?! Are there other factors at play? In my limited scope, if you had a dual 500, 533, whatever, it would be the same as a single 1.0ghz - and yet these dual processors are priced much cheaper. I really am at a loss as to how computers do their processing, and how to compare single processor G4's and dual processor G4's when making a purchase.
    Insight would be greatly appreciated!

And you shouldn't forget, the future is multiprocessors. There is a limit to miniturization, and the solution seems to be multiplication. So operating systems and applications are increasingly going to be multiprocessor-aware. Maybe a perfect example is the upcoming MacOS release, Snowleopard. Apparently, there will be almost no cosmetic changes. The changes will essentially be 'under-the-hood'. And you can bet, that some of those changes will be increased efficiency with respect to multiple processors.
So what's the deal with airplane peanu...err, dual processors?
The advantage, theoretically is, having more workers to do the work. Your 1ghz processor is like a worker who can lift 100kg, and your 500mhz are like workers who can lift 50kg each.
So where's the advantage? If you have a farm with 40 kg hay bales in the field that you need to pick up, your better off with two workers than one right? Or 8 workers in the case of a 8-core MacPro. So an multiprocessor-aware operating system, doles out the work much more efficiently, spreading the tasks around, or spreading a single task around in pieces (if the app is so written).
You've heard of render farms? The multiple computers used to render the frames of animated movies? Its the same principle. Having computer 1 render the first 1000 frames and computer 2 the next, the project gets done within a lifetime. If they had had only one computer, ToyStory would still not be finished.
Its the future. Just wait till the end of this year for example. Nehalem chips will be sporting even more processors.
