So why is Apple ram so expensive????

I ordered my MPD 8 core with the 2GB and added OWC for more than half the cost.
Apple seems to be loosing their own sales as a result of this profit vibe and I'm a shareholder of appl.
We all know what the costs should be so why not just make it easy on us and we'll buy from Apple.
Same thing on drives and the SAS card. What are they thinkin?
Is there any such reason for this extreem philosophy?

Apple monitors offer things most competitors do not:
1. Color correction software which is an industry standard.
2. Built-in Firewire and USB ports.
3. A magnetic mount for the old iSights.
4. 1080p with built-in overscan protection. Try displaying a Mac screen on a 1080i display. You will find overscan issues.
1-you will use a calibrator and a dedicated software with much better results than the internal software. Check Eizo and NEC monitors when talking about colors!
2- Built in USB: most companies hi end monitors do offer these.
Firewire.... well, yes, Apple is unique in this but...they build MacPros with 4 FW400/800 ports on a single bus! Since this is a ridiculous limitation...these ports do not really add much. In any case judging a monitor by these accessories is not relevant.
3- right! Old iSights are out of production for how long now (and never replaced)? 2, 3 years? That's another irrelevant aspect in buying a monitor. Some companies sell monitors with built in webcams...Many also include bult in multi-format card readers....
Apple monitors today:
-are old, with very slow panels.
-lighting uniformity is poor
-the 23" monitor suffers from a well known "pink cast" problem. Check in Google and you'll get tens of thousands reports. I had one and Apple couldn't make me happy.
-can't be raised, lowered, turned for different positioning. Almost all monitors offer this and ALL pro monitors do.
-have a single power/video/usb+fw cable soldered to the monitor! That's so stupid! if you have a problem to the cable, your monitor goes back to Apple for expensive servicing and you'll have to wait. Why all monitors have detachable cables? Doesn't this make things easier, faster, more customer needs friendly...and more pro/less greedy?
-can attach a single computer to a single monitor! All monitors offer 2 DVI or 1 DVI+ 1VGA inputs for multiple computers connections. Eizo can split its 30" monitors into 2, running 2 computers at the same time.
-DVI on Apple monitors is not HDCP compliant! You won't be able to connect true HD video sources (1080i or p) anyway.
-no other video inputs available as many competitors instead offer today: HDMI- HDCP enabled DVI- the new coming standard DisplayPort- S-Video/Component/Composite (nice to have sometimes).
-1 year warrant + 2 additional years at a price. Eizo offers 5 years at no price and one week exchange with a new one (not a refurbished!) for any stuck pixel/subpixel.
-doesn't state if their monitors comply (as they should) to ISO 13604-2 normativity which sets the number of acceptable stuck pixels...so you'll have to deal with Apple or your local dealer (very painful outside of USA...you american customers don't know how bad is Apple customer support outside of its home land) on a "onetoone basis".
-are extremely over priced for how old they are/how not updated they are/how good and well priced-supported many competitors are.
I think ther's a good enough description now to decide what NOT to buy.

  • Why is apple ram so much more expensive than normal ram

for 2 gb of apple ram for the dual 2.7 is about $300, this ram doesn't even have its own heatsink and is only CL3. why is ram with a heatsink and CL2( which is faster) about 200 $$ cheaper? is there any difference in the ram or is apple trying to make a big profit ?

I found out that there is nothing special about the
ram.. and the corsair ram is a lot faster and better
So, is the Corsair ram you are talking about that which TigerDirect.com has advertised over at dealmac.com today. The after rebate price for a 1Gb stick of 4200 is about $45. Not too bad if it would work in a Quad.

  • Why is apple repairs so expensive when i can get the ipodtouch battery replaced for $9.99 at digiexpress????

I paid $150 for a replacement ipod which died in a month. Apple wanted
Another $150 but i went to digiexpress and they replaced the battery for $9.99!
    Whats up with apple??

You should have had a 90-day warranty on the replacement iPod, so if it indeed failed in a month, Apple should have replaced it. Did they refuse, and if so what reason did they give? Or did you wait until after 90 days to contact them?
As to the replacement price, Apple charges only US $79 for battery replacement on an iPod touch, not $150. Who quoted you $150?

  • Apple RAM vs Crucial RAM

Ok so here i was looking for RAM for my MBP 15' 1.83Ghz. I looked on the apple site it 2GB was 240 UK pounds, so i looked on the crucial site and 2GB there was 50 UK pounds. Does anyone know the difference apart from price, why is apple RAM 190 UK pounds dearer. Both companies sell the 2GB kit (1GBx2), 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
    any ideas?

I've written this so many times on this forum
Apple supply Samsung, Hynix, Nanya and Micron ram as standard - so any of these will be like buying from Apple directly.
Micron own Crucial and Crucial have a pretty good reputation also.
    Best of luck.

  • Why is apple Australia so much MORE expensive than America!?

so tell me, Why is apple Australia so much MORE expensive than America!?    i have been meaning to pick up a new imac.....and i saw that the exact same type of imac that i want i could pick up in America for a good $600 LESS.... you know, even though our dollar is HIGHER THAN AMERICA'S! *** APPLE!

    Reasons:
    Australian import duties
    Australian taxes on foreign imports
    Australian VAT
Got complaints? Talk to your politicians. Apple has nothing to do with it.

Apple should reduce the price of movies rentals to $1.00!!!

Forgive me if my solution to your problem is oversimplistic, but if the movies are too expensive for you, don't buy them.

Why the apple store is so expensive and why the apple users can't access for free after spending huge amount in apple phone ?

The Apple store is correct. The warranty is not international, and Apple will not accept or return iPhones shipped from a different country.  You need to ship the phone to somebody in Hong Kong who can take it in to Apple for repair, or pay a third party repair shop in the Philippines to fix it.

  • Best Alternative to Expensive Apple RAM for 2011 MBP i7 Upgrade to 8GB?

I'm about to upgrade my 2011 13" i7 to 8GB. I was wondering if there is a consensus on the best non-Apple RAM available for this MBP. I understand that one has to be careful about the RAM chosen to stay trouble free.

As long as it meets the require specs, and you purchase from a reliable dealr, then it doesn't matter whose RAM you purhase. I purchase mine from DataMem while others prefer OWC.

  • Quicktime 7 vs. OS 10.2.8 - why is Apple forcing me to upgrade?!?!

I have OS 10.2.8 at home because I still have a few Classic apps I occasionally use. I haven't upgraded OS and those apps at home because:
--I don't happen to have some spare hundreds of dollars
--I have access to upgraded apps at work
--but mostly, I find that Jaguar is a lot more stable for me than 10.3, which is on my Mac at work.
So WHY, in Apple's infinite wisdom, have they released a Quicktime upgrade that I CAN'T INSTALL OR USE?!?! I do not NEED to upgrade my home systems (I have a laptop & desktop) because they work just fine. I don't need fast user switching, which was 10.3's big improvement. I don't need dashboard (I'm a registered Konfabulator user) which was 10.4's big whoop-de-doo. This is just so MICRO$OFT-ish to leave me unable to view movie trailers on Apple's own site, just because I haven't felt the need to fork out $140 for a slightly different OS!
Apple, PLEASE!!! Release a version of Quicktime 7 that will work on OS 10.2.8 for those of us who cannot justify the expense of upgrading our OS at this time! Believe me, when Aspyr FINALLY releases Quake 4 for Mac, I'm sure THAT will require an OS upgrade, and, at that point, I can justify the expense. PLEASE!!!!
    1.25 GHz G4 15" PowerBook Mac OS X (10.2.x) Plus a 466 MHz Digital Audio G4 Desktop (for backups)

You only need to upgrade to version 7 if you wish to
view H.264 video. Many older computers don't meet the
    hardware requirements.
No one is being "forced" as the choice is your own.
But I CANNOT upgrade to version 7, even though my "older" (just over 2 years old) hardware should, I presume, meet the requirements. In order to upgrade, I am "forced" to buy an OS upgrade. Apple offers regular and HD Quicktime videos for some Movie Trailers, and I've even viewed some of those HD trailers. But now if I want to view trailers, I'm screwed. I don't understand why I, a loyal Mac user who has personally owned (forked out the dough for) 5 different Macs over the years, am all of a sudden being left out in the cold because my hardware and software is two years old?
Kyn, thank you for also noticing the apparent better stability of the older OSs. I have 10.3 on a Dual G5 at work, and I have some really flakey things going on since day one, some of which I've been able to address, and some of which confound even our certified Apple tech.
And Julie, thank you!!!! Downloaded the player, I'll give it a try! You're the BEST!

  • Adobe can support pentax why not apple?

I just downloaded a beta of lightable from adobe which supports my pentax raw format. If Adobe can support pentax, why not apple? It seems as though aperture is playing poor catchup, maybe apple to put more resources on it.
Image if only 1/3 of the cameras were supported when Iphoto launched, they would have looked like idiots. Well?

Image if only 1/3 of the cameras were supported when
Iphoto launched, they would have looked like idiots.
    Well?
    In very simple terms...
In order to add support for various camera RAW files, Apple has to ask the camera manufactures to supply proprietary information about how to process and read the RAW files. Each and every single camera has a different "proprietary process" it must use to handle the RAW file that the camera produces.
So that means that Apple is at the mercy of the manufacturers in order to get that information. Now most manufactures would prefer that you purchase or use their own software to work on the RAW files that their camera produces... it's an extra revenue stream for them. Because of this, it's not hard to imagine that they are a bit reluctant to divulge what is proprietary information that they spent time and money on creating. It's well documented that Nikon in particular is very reluctant about releasing such information.
If Adobe has support for a particular camera that Apple does not, then that means that Adobe has already gone through the trouble of asking the manufacturer for the information that is needed, reached an agreement and signed the appropriate licensing contracts, exchanged whatever compensation was agreed upon, and then went to work making the software for ACR so it can read that particular cameras RAW files. As you can imagine, it's a process that takes some time to hammer out... more than likely because it involves more lawyers than engineers!
So... be sure you let Apple know that you would like them to add support for a particular camera, but just as important, make sure that your cameras manufacturer knows that you would like them to allow Apple to support their cameras with Apple's software.

  • The difference between regular ram and "apple ram" from 3rd parties

So I made a previous post on the Macrumors forums regarding whether the RAM issues in the Unibody MacBook have been resolved or not: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=692653
It seems that most people who bought OCZ ram have had no issues what so ever. I am located in Canada so a store like CanadaComputers is great for me because I can go pick it up instead of having it delivered and pay shipping costs (as opposed to Newegg.ca). On their website, they have two modules with similar specs expect one is found in the Apple ram section and the other is in the regular ram.
    Apple Ram (OCZ)
    http://canadacomputers.com/index.php...80&cid=RAM.188
    Regular Ram (OCZ)
    http://canadacomputers.com/index.php...id=RAM.187.778
When comparing the specs, the only difference I can see is that the CL on the Apple ram is 7-7-7-20. The CL on the regular ram is CL 8-8-8-27.
The price difference between the two is $57! OCZ's website confirms that one is made specifically for Apple Notebooks and the other is just regular.
Can anyone explain what CL is and whether it is something that needs to be taken into consideration. Thanks.

That only needs to be taken into consideration if you're using applications which are very demanding about performance, which aren't intended for usage by home users. Click here for more information.

  • AE CS4 - why such poor RAM preview on my FAST machine?

Hi all, I just installed After Effects CS4 - I have a smokin fast mchine: quadcore Zeon 3.20 GHz, hyperthreading turned on, nvidia quadrofx 3800 with current driver, 12 GB DDR3 RAM, windows 7 64bit ... can you PLEASE help me troubleshoot a problem:  even on the simplest compositions, a moving picture or a moving piece of type, the RAM preview stutters along, the current time indicator hops along at a choppy pace, images in the frame dont look like they're moving smoothly, and all i get is about 6 seconds of RAM preview ... seems to me that I used to get better performance on a MUCH MUCH  slower machine under windows XP ... i have looked around the forums and seem the advice on multiprocessor options and the like, but nothing I do seems to help ... do any of you have any advice for me to improve my performance???  if you have any questions about my setup or preferences, let me know, I will be on this until I get what I expect out of my (otherwise incredibly fast) machine

Hi Todd, thanks again for your reply ... FYI, I bought the FX3800 for Avid editing, for which it is the qualified video card, and supports distributed processing in the Avid along with my DX HD hardware BOB - I had hoped it would work well with After Effects, too, but I do understand the Adobe is very transparent about the fact that, as long as your card has OpenGL support, probably best to sink your $$$ into more RAM or faster CPU .. but to stay on topic, I am just  very stunned that I am not getting better playback with my system ... I have the most recent Nvidia drivers ... I have 2 NEC 2490WUXi2 each connected through DVI-D to my video card, each runnign at its native 1920x1200 res, 59 hertz ... the programs I have installed are Adobe CS4 Production Premium, Win7 64bit, MS Office 2007 Enterprise, latest version of Quick Time, Media Player version 11, and NERO 9 ... you dont think that one of these video player apps (like media player or QT) are messing with my screen performance do you?  what about Nero 9, have you heard any compatibility or display problems associated with this app?  would unistalling any of these programs be a troubleshooting technique that you'd attempt?
Finally, when you say "an issue with a bottleneck of drawing to the screen" what do you mean exactly? 'cause this kinds sounds like a goood description of what I am seeing ... what might be the cause of such a bottleneck, I am willing to try anything ...
    Thanks, sir, for your reply!

Subject: AE CS4 - why such poor RAM preview on my FAST machine?
Just one thing to cut down a frequent misconception:
Your nice graphics card doesn't do much for After Effects performance. In fact, trying to use OpenGL for rendering (including rendering of previews) can cause problems.
I recommend turning OpenGL rendering off for all but interactions. I.e., choose the http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WSAF696587-2D81-42e2-B248-4C5C2B7D3614a.html and turn off http://help.adobe.com/en_US/AfterEffects/9.0/WS3878526689cb91655866c1103a4f2dff7-79e8a.htm l. OpenGL is not compatible with Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing.
I'm not saying that OpenGL is your problem. Rather, because you mentioned your nice graphics card, I just had to stress that you need to forget about that with regard to After Effects. It's not really relevant.
It may be that the jerkiness is an issue with a bottleneck of drawing to the screen. (I don't know, but it's possible.)
Your hard disk being too slow wouldn't be an issue with RAM previews, since the frames are all cached in RAM.

  • Why wont apple let me download apps without a credit card?

Why wont apple let me get an apple ID without a "no credit card" suggestion in the payment method?
I dont buy my apps and I dont understand why my sister (and other people) were able to make an apple ID without putting a credit card.
Though I can enter my apple ID account when it comes to the game center, when I try to download an app that problem always appears. So now I'm using my sister's ID, but I really want to have my own.

Follow it through to the payment methods and choose None if it is available.

  • The unlocked IPhone 4S models will not be available until November, Why is that? Why would Apple do that? I should be able to buy a factory unlocked Apple iPhone 4S when it comes out! Why is my interests being put last and Sprint, Verizon

The unlocked IPhone 4S models will not be available until November, Why is that? Why would Apple do that? I should be able to buy a factory unlocked Apple iPhone 4S when it comes out! I travel all over the world, and so that is why I need one like that. It is unfair to the consumer, and frankly turning away customers like myself willing to pay high dollar to Apple for their product, who can I speak with to complain about this, because I know their are factory unlocked iPhone 4S' sitting in a warehouse somewhere just waiting to be shipped, and I want one.  I know why, cause Apple signed contracts with each carrier so the carrier could increase their sales making customers sign 2 year contracts, I get it, I own my own business, but the delay of releasing factory unlocked ones is just not right and I should be able to buy one without having to buy it over in the UK where it is unlocked when it comes out right away, I should be able to buy it in my own country!  These business practices we practice in the US need to stop, their is a demand that needs to be met with consumers like myself who don't need subsidized iPhone's with 2 year contracts with carriers and don't mine paying full price for an unlocked one, it is unethical in a sense, forcing the customer to buy it with a carrier contract and NOT giving the customer the option to buy it full price and own it themselves, OR, making the consumer wait a month for that option to be available.  THEY SHOULD BE RELEASED AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!  THAT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO!!!!!!
Apple can contact me and I will proudly pay for one.  But making me wait a month for an unlocked one, puts AT&T, Sprint & Verizon's interests before mine, and that is not right, for it is MY money that keeps you guys in business, so my best interests should come first!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand your frustration, but when any form of rationing is required you have to prioritise. The number of unlocked vs packaged phones will be quite small and the number of unlocked buyers wishing to upgrade immediately will be smaller still. Against this you have the corporations sharing $billions between them.
It would, you're correct, have been fairer to release all at the same time, but fairer doesn't come into it: it's business.
