SO8 on CENTOS 64 bit
I have installed the 32 bit version of SO8 on CENTOS running on an AMD 64 bit opteron.. BUT even though I have the jre installed, when I launch staroffice and then look at the options -java, it only shows an installed JRE if I am running SO8 as root. All other accounts cannot find the jre. Even if I click Add, and browse to exactly the same directory as shown when running as root, it still cannot find the jre. This is very very very irritating. Other than not finding the JRE, the package works fine. Does anyone have any idea why! Java works in Firefox, and with other applications, but SO8 cannot find it.
SIncerely,
Dave Hopkins
Well, I will reply to myself then. If I remove the 1.5 version of Java and revert back 1.4.2 from Sun, it works. However, if I use the FSF version, it does not, so it seems that there are two things happening: 1) SO8 only detects a Sun-version of java, and 2) SO8, fully patched, doesn't properly recognize the 1.5 version when running on a 64-bit architecture (CENTOS x86_64)
Anyhow, I'll continue to wait and hopefully someone can explain why the above two things seem to be true.

CentOS 5.4 64 bit srss 4.2 troubles
Hi have 3 sun ray 170 thin clients that used to work on an older sunfire v250, but now we have upgraded to a new IBM 3500 series running CentOS 5.4 64 bit. We are trying to get the thin 170s to work with the new 4.2 version of sun ray software. We had licensing for 3.1 as far as I read it won't work with RHEL 5 so I downloaded the free trial of 4.2.
I have tried for 4 days with no luck in getting it to work. I have installed all the prerequisites for RHEL 5 update 3 [Could it be it does not work on update 4????].
Except the JRE, CentOS 5 has 1.6 openjdk [mixed mode] and I just pointed to that during configuration.
When I ran utinstall I got no errors, everything installed great. I printed the installation log and no errors. utadm -A went fine too no problems the dhcpd.conf file was sent up and seems to be working fine. utconfig also went fine the first time I installed it I used tomcat5 that I can get for CentOS 5 but the web console did not work. I just get a blank page. I installed again this time I first installed the apache-tomcat that is downloaded with srss 4.2 and installed in /opt just like it says here
http://wikis.sun.com/display/SRSS4dot2/Home
Again I print out the logs and no errors and I just get a blank page on 1660 and 1661 nothing, maybe this needs to be running to configure the whole things. With 3.1 I just skip the web console because all I need is a thin client,.
I can't run utfwsync [it says to do this off the wiki] I get an error about not being able to get gstatus for the server ????whatever that is???
When I connect the 170s I see one of the dhcp range IPs and the MAC address for the 170 then the <-----> icon with 100F and the IP of the server at the bottom I get a code of 22D then the client resets and this goes on for ever.
No firewall or SELINUX is on or was on during installation.
I am running out of patience with this. Does anyone have any suggestions or have any additional info [logs, support, etc] regarding installing on CentOS 5.4 64 bit and why it does not work. Actually how can I tell everything is up? I mean I see a bunch of ut processes when I run ps but have no idea what should be up.
Also there is mention about using ldap and although all the ldap rpms are loaded I did not configure anything nor see instructions on having to do so.
Also any suggestions on any other software that can work with CentOS 5.4 64 bit using the sun ray 170 as thin clients besides srss4.2 would be welcome.
Thanks in advancebdajames wrote:

On a fresh install of 5.4 on an x64 platform I needed to install the 32-bit ndbm and libXfont packages in addition to the prerequisites listed for 5.3.
Except the JRE, CentOS 5 has 1.6 openjdk [mixed mode] and I just pointed to that during configuration. The JRE that was on your 64-bit Linux? That won't work. It needs a 32-bit JVM 1.6 that is fully compatible with Sun JNI. Not sure, if openjdk works - better use a 32-bit JRE from Sun.

But I suspect this is also caused by using the wrong JRE.
I can't run utfwsync [it says to do this off the wiki] I get an error about not being able to get gstatus for the server ????whatever that is???This tells you that the utauthd daemon is not running. Probably caused by using the wrong JVM.
When I connect the 170s I see one of the dhcp range IPs and the MAC address for the 170 then the <-----> icon with 100F and the IP of the server at the bottom I get a code of 22D then the client resets and this goes on for ever.

Actually how can I tell everything is up? I mean I see a bunch of ut processes when I run ps but have no idea what should be up.The basic test that the utauthd process is up and running is to look at the group status (the 'gstatus' you wondered about):
$ /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utgstatus.
If you get "Error: Could not get gstatus information", then the service is down on this server.
You can often find out more about what is going wrong, if you look at the following log files:
/var/opt/SUNWut/log/auth_log - if the utauthd daemon fails (i.e no 'gstatus')
/var/opt/SUNWut/log/utwebadmin.log - if the webconsole fails
/var/opt/SUNWut/log/messages - if the daemons are up, but connection still fails
/var/log/gdm/<display>.log - if everything else seems to work, but the DTU is stuck in status 26{code}
Also there is mention about using ldap and although all the ldap rpms are loaded I did not configure anything nor see instructions on having to do so.
LDAP is used internally by SRSS, but you usually don't need to deal with that directly in any way.
Also any suggestions on any other software that can work with CentOS 5.4 64 bit using the sun ray 170 as thin clients besides srss4.2 would be welcome.
There isn't really any other software for this. -
Oracle 9i (version 2) + CentOS 4.7 64 bits
Hi
I did manage to install making many "tricks" most of them were only install software but at the end of the installation It stopped and I realized that the runInstaller was looking for 32 bits libs instead of $ORACLE_HOME/libs so I solved changing my /usr/bin/gcc32 to /usr/bin/gcc and the LD_LIBRARY_PATH with $ORACLE_HOME/libs32:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH...
So I would like to know if this "tricks" could negative affects to my Oracle Installation....
What could be the impact on the database ¿?
Is my oracle really running at 64 bits ¿?
FYI:
Pre-installation:
Software that I needed:
yum install xfce4-toys.x86_64
yum install glib2.i386
yum install xorg-x11-deprecated-libs.x86_64
yum install xorg-x11-deprecated-libs.i386
yum install libxslt.i386
yum install compat-db.x86_64
yum install compat-libstdc++-33.x86_64
yum install gcc-c++.x86_64
yum install libaio-devel.x86_64
yum install sysstat.x86_64
yum install glibc-devel.i386
yum install compat-gcc-32.x86_64
The "compiler trick":
cd /usr/bin
mv gcc gcc64
mv gcc32 gcc
The oracle needs:
groupadd dba
useradd oracle
mkdir /opt/oracle
mkdir /opt/oracle/9.2
chown -R oracle:dba /opt/oracle
touch /etc/oratab
chown oracle:dba /etc/oratab
sysctl -w kernel.shmmax=100000000
echo "kernel.shmmax = 100000000" >> /etc/sysctl.conf
Unpacking the oracle:
cpio -idcmv < amd64_db_9204_Disk1.cpio
cpio -idcmv < amd64_db_9204_Disk2.cpio
cpio -idcmv < amd64_db_9204_Disk3.cpio
Running the installer:
(log at the server as oracle in my case ssh -Y -l oracle myoraserver)
export ORACLE_HOME=/opt/oracle/9.2
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib32:/lib:/usr/lib/:/usr/local/lib
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL="2.4.19"
./runInstaller
Thanks in Advanced ;o)The {font:Courier}gcc32{font} is a compiler version, not an architecture specification, so you need that version to compile and link properly. If you do this:
$ /bin/rpm -q --qf='%{NAME}-%{VERSION}.%{RELEASE}.%{ARCH}\n' gccyou can see if you have a 64-bit capable compiler ({font:Courier}x86_64{font}) or 32-bit only (anything else).
The linking step will complain and fail if you try to mix 32-bit and 64-bit object files and libraries, so that probably worked well enough.
Of course, Oracle RDBMS is not supported under CENTOS so using this work business purposes is totally your risk.
Why not download Oracle Enterprise Linux and have everything just work? -
CentOS 5.4 64 bit srss 4.2 troubles #2
Hi in my last post "CentOS 5.4 64 bit srss 4.2 troubles" at http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10968761
I managed to get the sun rays working as thin clients off my new CentOS 5.4 64 bit server thanks to the help of ottomeister and joergb
Although the clients seem to work well I still think there is some underlining problem. I never got the web admin bit to work although I did try both tomcat5 that came with CentOS and the apache-tomcat that came with srss 4.2. Although in both installs there were no errors in the installation logs. I wonder if it will affect me later with licensing or any further configuration.
I am definetly going to do a ./utconfig -u and redo ./utconfig with out configuring the web administration.
I am worried about other errors too that I found in /var/opt/SUNWut/log/messages

This is just a tail snippet but it this repeated all over the messages file. I see part of it is a dhcp message that might have something to do with the fact that I am trying to strictly assign IPs to only known MAC addresses [the sun rays] but the syntax seems to have changed a bit and don't want to mess too much with sun config stuff in there too.
I don't understand why the utstorage keeps restarting not what the xinetd massage is?
[root@gulfstream ~]# tail /var/opt/SUNWut/log/utstoraged.log

So here its missing something but I have no clue what utdiskctl is and why was it not created at installation????
In any case I am going to do a fresh ./utconfig -u and then ./utconfig with no web admin and see if some of these errors go away.
If any one has seen this before or understands the sun ray stuff a bit better please help :^)
I'm starting to wonder if pxes, cult or thinstation might work with these sun ray 170s. I got some old PCs to run cult xdm on the same server but don't know if I can pxe boot these 170s although I see its probably the same concept of running a dhcp server that sends options and points to a tftp server.
Thanks in advance any help is much appreciated. The web admin component is completely optional. Its absence won't break anything.
The messages from utstoraged probably mean that the 'utdisk' kernel driver is not loaded into the kernel, probably because it failed to build on your system when SRSS was installed. That probably means that the attempted builds of the 'utadem' and 'utio' drivers failed too. These drivers are distributed as source and must be built on the Sun Ray server. To build them you need to have the kernel-devel RPM installed, then you should be able to:
$ cd /usr/src/SUNWut/utdisk
$ make clean
$ make && make installand similarly for the utio and utadem drivers in the /usr/src/SUNWut/utio and /usr/src/SUNWut/utadem directories.

Oracle Enterprise Edition for CentOS 5.5, 64-bit ?
Hi
We are going to install Oracle enterprise edition 11gR2 on CentOS 5.5, 64-bit servers for 2-node RAC/ASM setup. I guess we should just need to download "Linux x86 -64" from oracle software down page http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/enterprise-edition/downloads/index.html. Should that work for CentOS 5.5, 64-bit, since there is no specific version for CentOS 5.5, 64-bit? And that Linux x86-64 works for all different kind of linux 64bit?
Thanks!Hi;
CentOS is not a certified and supported operating system for Oracle RDBMS software and there are no plans to add support for CentOS. Supported operating systems are listed in the 11gR2 Oracle Installation Guide in chapter 3 which is avaliable at
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e16763.pdf
Please see:

Depending on the Unix Shell, you can use one of the following commands as examples to set the DISPLAY environment variable:
- For csh: % setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
- For sh, ksh and bash: $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0; export DISPLAY
Use the following command to see what shell is being used:
echo $SHELL
Use the following command to view the current DISPLAY environment variable setting:
echo $DISPLAY

CentOS-4.2-x86_64
I have an installation problem with CentOS-4.2-x86_64 on my Compaq computer. I get an error during installation which means I do get the local-disk driver bundled up with the this release of the OS for my Compaq PC. Here is the error message:
An error has occurred; no valid devices were found on which to create new file systems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem.
BTW, I don't have this problem when I install Centos4.4 as the drive gets recognized and partitioning gets underway; but I must use Centos4.2 for firewire driver reasons, which Cenots4.4 does not have... so, it's a catch-22 problem...
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
VilHi Jer:
I am not sure how to make a driver disk. Where would be my source for drivers, what would the driver be called, and how would I install the driver?
I have all four iso images that I burned into a CD and that's all I have (CentOS 4.2 64 bit).
I know for a fact that because my hardware is brand new and came with a serial hard drive (ATA), and, apparently, VenOS 4.2 supports/has drivers for IDE drives (older drive technology) alone. The question is where to get and incorporate driver for ATA drives
into 4.2 -- Centos 4.4 has the driver, and I must stick to 4.2.
Thx,
Vil -
Trouble adding regular oracle oci8 support to RPM, CentOs 5
Hello,
It seems that i'm missing smth simple while trying to add oci8 support to RPM.
I took Christopher Jones's SRPM for 5.2.3 as a base, but since i don't have and don't need a support for instant client i modified latest available 5.1.6 SRPM from CentOS 5 repo.

%description
PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language. PHP attempts to make it
easy for developers to write dynamically generated webpages. PHP also
offers built-in database integration for several commercial and
non-commercial database management systems, so writing a
database-enabled webpage with PHP is fairly simple. The most common
use of PHP coding is probably as a replacement for CGI scripts.
The php package contains the module which adds support for the PHP
language to Apache HTTP Server.

Database Studio 7.7.04.26 crashes on CentOS 5.2 / RHEL 5.2
I'm running dbstudio 7.7.03.23 on CentOS 5.2 / RHEL 5.2 with SUN JDK 1.6.0_07. Now I tried to run 7.7.04.26 but can't get it to work on my test machine with the same OS and JDK but it simply crashes like this:
An unexpected error has been detected by Java Runtime Environment:

Aborted
It looks like the crashes are a bit random because they seem to happen in different places.
The Logfile is pasted below. Do you have any idea what's going wrong here? I'm happy to help debugging the issue if I can help doing so.
Thanks,
Simon

elapsed time: 34 secondsHello Melanie,
Thanks for looking into it. The file sdb/DatabaseStudio/.metadata/.plugins/com.sap.sdb.tools.core/dbstudio.log shows only this:
Database Studio
Version : 1.0
Eclipse Version : 3.2.0
====================> current write pos <====================
The file sdb/DatabaseStudio/.metadata/.log deoesn't exist.
I think the problem is because dbstudio doesn't reach a state where it starts logging.
Now, I tried to investigate again and found a solution. Somehow one of the shipped libs produces the crashes. It's in org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.x86_3.3.0.v3346.jar. So I simply put org.eclipse.swt.gtk.linux.x86_3.4.0.v3448f.jar from a newer eclipse build into /opt/sdb/programs/DatabaseStudio/plugins/ and voila, it works. Tried it on different hosts and it works on all of them. I tool the file from the eclipse 'ganymede' release.
I know that doesn't really tell where the problem is but at least it's a workaraound for me.
Thanks,
Simon -
Issue with running Linux on a Windows 7 64 bit (on MC7 mac book pro via Boot Camp)
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit (native via BootCamp) on a new MBP MC7. When I'm trying to run a 64 bit Linux (CentOS) using VM Player, I received following error " CPU doesn't support long mode. Use a 32 bit distribution". Is it because of VT is not enabled or something else?
just for fun, try VirtualBox 4.x for your CentOS and see if it works.
I don't know VM Player enough - would have to check on VMware for FAQ support articles -
Java 7 (oracle jdk 1.7) on CentOS 6.2 freezes hangs FUTEX_WAIT
Hello,
Recently have had problems with Java 1.7 this combination:
CentOS 6.2
linux kernel 2.6.32.57 (vanilla kernel)
GRSecurity grsecurity-2.9-2.6.32.57-201202232125.patch
When trying to run jdk1.7.0_04, java hangs with no error messages in /var/log/messages and cannot be killed leaving CPU at 100% forever, OS unable to shutdown. Only solution is to pull the power plug!

When I boot with the CentOS 6.2 kernel, java 1.7 runs fine.
This same instance runs jdk 1.6 and jrockit 1.6 just fine

# ./java -version

JDK 1.6 is fine for now, but sooner or later, the server will need to run JDK 1.7. Wondering if anyone has come across this or if someone might have an idea what would get jdk 1.7 working. Or what other info I might supply to try to figure this out.
Thanks!
Not sure if it helps, but I straced the command...

Flash crashes dozens of times a day and I am trying to figure out WHY.
I have the recommended latest player & browser for my operating system.
The only diagnostic information I have is that the crashes seem to occur when a few tabs are open with videos loading in them and when any one video is closed, flash then locks up the browser for about 30 seconds, and then ALL the videos that were loading in separate tabs are dumped & say that the plugin crashed.
Details about the system from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html
1. Flash player version: 11.2.202.236
2. Operating System: Linux 2.6.32-279.2.1.el6.x86_64 (64-bit)
3. Browser: Firefox Firefox ESR 10.0.6
This is the correct set of components.
Debugging, I've modified the about:config dom.ipc.plugins.timeoutSecs to any value of 10 seconds to 45 seconds (the default), but it doesn't seem to make a difference in the number of crashes.
Any idea how to get more diagnostic information?Unfortunately, there's nothing in "/var/crash" after the numerous flash crashes so I'm not sure where to look next.
The 'dmesg' command reports:
npviewer.bin[16884]: segfault at 340 ip 00007f26bda22ab0 sp 00007fffa8abbe78 error 6 in libflashplayer.so[7f26bd68d000+1179000]
Bringing up the CentOS 6 "Applications->System Tools->System Monitor", I see the numerous Flash crashes appear to have some relationship with "npviewer.bin", which uses the "/usr/lib64/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so" shared object module and which has numerous "open files", one of which is "/home/<username>/.xsession-errors".
Looking at "/home/<username>/.xsession-errors", we find these lines, which may be useful.
Here are some excerpted errors & warnings:

This probably reflects a bug in the program.

(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
aborting...

How do setup FlexUnit in your CI build process on 64-Bit Linux
Hello everyone. I am trying to setup FlexUnit in my build process and am using Rackspace cloud servers for my build server. I only have the option of Linux 64 bit distros or Windows 32b/64b. I started setting up and configuring everything on Linux but ran into problems installing the required stand alone player for test execution using FlexUnit. There is no 64-bit linux compatitble version of the stand alone player. In configuring the system to use the browser plugin on the machine instead of the stand alone player for executing the tests, I then get a manual interaction component which doesn't fit well with an automated CI build.
Am I the only person out there trying to integrate FlexUnit into my CI process on a 64b Linux machine? Any pointers, tips, workarounds or general hypothetical ideas would be great!@mbbender - Answers below:
> I have been able to get the Flash Plugin working in a browser on my 64b Ubuntu 10.4 system. However, from my understanding I can not use the flash plugin from a browser to properly execute a headless execution of my tests during the CI process. To execute the tests as part of the CI process I need the Flash Stand Alone Player.
-- As of FlexUnit 4.1-beta2, you have the option of executing your tests using the stand-alone debug Flash Player using the default mechanism to launch that player or using a custom command, which could potentially point to the browser. Check out the docs on the Ant task @ http://docs.flexunit.org/index.php?title=Ant_Task#Usage and the sample CI build using a browser @ http://github.com/flexunit/flexunit/blob/master/FlexUnit4SampleCIProject/build.browser.xml for more details on how to do this.
> Are you saying that I can somehow use the Flash Plugin dependencies to install the Flash Stand Alone Player? If so, would I then need a 32b emulator wrapper for running the Stand Alone Player? Or, are you suggesting that I can somehow use the Flash Plugin in the browser to do what I need to execute my tests during the Hudson build?
-- Although I'm not a savvy Linux admin, it's my understanding that recent 64-bit Linux distros can execute 32-bit applications as well as 64-bit applications. The only req I'm aware of is that the 32-bit version of the dependencies must be available. In this case, executing the 32-bit version of the SA player should work from what I understand.
> Do you have a CI build process setup on a Linux 64b CentOS system with FlexUnit? To be honest, I'm more concerned with the end result right now than learning how to do it on my own and would like to know if you can potentially help me get this done a little quicker if you are interested.
-- I currently have a setup using 64-bit CentOS and running the 32-bit SA player, although it's not on Adobe's proper list of supported OSes. We've worked with other folks who have the 32-bit SA player running with FlexUnit on Ubuntu 64-bit. There was some feedback on some issues using older versions of openSUSE, but I don't know too many details re: the problem.
Hope this helps.
