SOA Practitioners Opinion on Business Architecture

This white paper is available [here|http://soablueprint.com/yahoo_site_admin/assets/docs/SOAPOpinion_BusinessArchitecture.49175900.pdf].
Abstract:
As Enterprises are starting to adopt Services-Oriented Architecture,
they are currently in the process of transforming both their Business
and IT organizations. In this context there has been a discussion on
the topic of Business Architecture with a basic consensus that
Business architecture is the link between business and technology (or
IT) but there isn't any clear definition of the roles and
responsibilities of this position. Nor is there clear descriptions of
the practical aspects of what exactly are the Business Architect's
activities and how should enterprises get started with this function.
The objective of this paper to help clarify these points from a
practitioner's point of view as well as help organization kick-start
the Business Architecture function.

SOA and Business Architecture
One area where SOA has been gaining ground is in its power as a mechanism for defining business services[26] and operating models and thus provide a structure for IT to deliver against the actual business requirements and adapt in a similar way to the business. The purpose of using SOA as a business mapping tool is to ensure that the services created properly represent the business view and are not just what technologists think the business services should be. At the heart of SOA planning is the process of defining architectures for the use of information in support of the business, and the plan for implementing those architectures [27]. Enterprise Business Architecture should always represent the highest and most dominant architecture. Every service should be created with the intent to bring value to the business in some way and must be traceable back to the business architecture.
Within this area, SOMA (service-oriented modeling and architecture) was announced by IBM as the first publicly announced SOA-related methodology in 2004. Since then, efforts have been made to move towards greater standardization and the involvement of business objectives, particularly within the OASIS standards group and specifically the SOA Adoption Blueprints group. All of these approaches take a fundamentally structured approach to SOA, focusing more on the Services and Architecture elements and leaving implementation to the more technically focused standards. Another pertinent example is SAP Enterprise Services Architecture, which is focused on a strict governance process and the use of semantics to improve the usefulness of services in business process innovation.

• Facing issues with R12 and SOA 11g integration using Business events

Hi,
I am trying to integrate R12 application with Fusion using 11g SOA suite. I configured BES in R12 application and I am able to raise a business event and query it from WF_BPEL_Qtab. I have an Oracle applications adapter listening for the same event in SOA composite deployed over a server. I have verified the DB connection and schema for R12 application in 11g SOA server. However, no SOA instance is being generated. No server log as well.
I understand that 11g SOA uses EDN (using fusion_edn schema) for business events. Are there any changes expected to be done to Oracle Apps adapter to ensure the event is received.
P.S. Oracle apps adapter configuration is probably correct as the out bound calls are taking place correctly.
Thanks,
Sagar

• Facing issues with Oracle11i and SOA 10g integration using Business events.

Hi ,
I have created a custom business event and have added subscription for the same.
When i am triggering a business event, event is raised and the event data is getting inserted in the Queue (AQ).
In SOA i have created an OracleApps adapter that is listening to the queue ,
but the Oracleapps adapter is not getting started even though there are data in the queue.
I checked the WSDL file of Oracleapps adapter and there i can see there is field Consumer with some code.
I have added the code snippet from Oracleapps adapter wsdl.
<pc:inbound_binding />
<operation name="DEQUEUE">
<jca:operation
ActivationSpec="oracle.tip.adapter.apps.AppsWFBesQueueDequeueActivationSpec"
QueueName="WF_BPEL_Q"
DatabaseSchema="APPS"
Consumer="ORA_88p3cd9o74pj2cpg6p13cdhp75"
MessageSelectorRule="tab.user_data.event_name = 'xxc.oracle.apps.soa.demo'" >
</jca:operation>
I have checked the connection factory set up at loaction (application-deployments\default\AppsAdapter/oc4j-ra.xml)too and found it is correct.
code snippet from oc4j-ra.xml:-
<connector-factory location="eis/Apps/Apps" connector-name="AppsAdapter">
<config-property name="xADataSourceName" value="jdbc/EBSDataSource"/>
<config-property name="dataSourceName" value=""/>
<connection-pooling use="none">
</connection-pooling>
<security-config use="none">
</security-config>
<connectionfactory-interface>javax.resource.cci.ConnectionFactory</connectionfactory-interface>
</connector-factory>.
Can anyone tell me where consumer for an event/queue is being defined in the Oracle apps.
Thanks & Regards

• Can SOA replace SAP Business Workflow?

I finished BIT600 and covered the practicals on 300 pages of the 500 pages of BIT601. Now I hear that the company I work for will replace workflow with SOA? I not that informed on SOA, but would it be possible for this to replace SAP Business Workflow? It doesn't make sense.
SAP Business Workflow is fully integrated to SAP Business Processes with events/triggers through Business Objects and classes. It manages business processes and error handling. Also, it has the background jobs set up to monitor deadlines. From what I gather SOA is middleware? How is it supposed to replace Workflow?
Thanks,
Adrian

I agree with you.
SOA is a Service Oriente Architecture... a set of principles and methodologies for designing and developing software in the form of interoperable services. BPM is a SAP component that helps you model, execute, and monitor your business processes based on a common process model.
These are 2 concepts completely different each other in my opinion... it doesn't have any sense.

• Applying SOA with E-business

Hi,
My company have oracle E-business suite application as the main application , and others service applications each of them with different tools and different databases and servers.
My manger asked me to search how we can use SOA application in the company, how we can use it and the how to implement it including tools/ hardware and all needed information to start a project like this.
Actually I got confused as I know SOA is a Service Oriented Architecture, there is no standards that should be applied and each case has to be studied.
Can anyone help me from where i should start my search , what the documentation that I should provide should contain ?
Thank you.

Hi,
Please see the following as it will help you:

• Standard Business Event issue in SOA.

Hi,
I created a subscription in SOA for the standard business event (*oracle.apps.jtf.cac.task.updateTask*) using Oracle Apps Adapter. When the event is fired in the Oracle EBusiness Suite, I am expecting SOA to capture the payload and create an instance. The instances are not created.
This is the workaround I did to check if the events are firing or not.
1. Whenever a standard business event is fired, we can see a record in WF_DEFERRED queue. In this case too, I am able to see the record.
2. From WF_DEFERRED, the data should flow into WF_BPEL_Q. I am unable to see a record in this table in my case.
Which mean the events are firing but SOA is unable to capture the events. I tried to raise a JAVA event in the Oracle EBusiness Suite's workflow manager and SOA was able to capture the payload and an instance was created in weblogic EM. But when I update the task in the Oracle EBS, SOA is not able to capture the payload.
Any inputs to fix this issue is greatly appreciated. Please help.
Thanks,
Venkat Sai.

Hi;
For your issue i suggest close your thread here as changing thread status to answered and move it to Oracle Discussion Forums » SOA & Process Management » SOA Suite which you can get more quick response

• How to use SOA Suite in conjunction with SOA Analysis and Design Tools

Hi everybody,
I am a novice in this field and I need some help regarding integrating analysis and design tools with SOA Suite.
We used to analyze and design with Oracle Designer and use its powerful form generator to develop a system. It almost covered all the software lifecycle and kept the traceability between anlaysis,design and implementation.
I have studied about the SOA concepts and read some papaer about SOA Suite. I have also installed the SOA demo based on SOA Suite and I found it absolutely amazing, but my problem is that It seems oracle does not have any tools for SOA Analysis and Design. am I right? if so, How can we analyze and design a system based on SOA concepts and implement it using soa suite in such a way that keeps traceability? What tools is used for this purpose?
It seems that IBM have some tools like Rational Software Architect and Rational Suite which enable people to design and analyze based on SOA concepts and then generates some pieces of code (like oracle designer in old days) but is it possible to design in these tools and then generating codes for SOA Suite ? (for example generating a bpel file from a design model)
As I told before I am a novice in this field and I would be so grateful if other users can share their expriences regarding this matter.
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Navid

• SOA Suite on Vista

I'm a developer using the SOA suite and I've just got a new powerful laptop with window vista ultimate on which I'd like to install SOA. On installation I get an version check error from the installer.
When is the SOA Suite going to be release for Vista? rough ball park figure would be great.
As far as I'm aware I currently have two options
1) try runInstaller -ignoresysprereqs .....
(No support or If it will work)
2) Or run in VMware and install winxp then run soa in it.
(Real pain and then possible performance issues)

Note: This is not the production system but a development system
What is the best option, I'm leaning towards option 1 but will it actually work?

• Misc. questions about Oracles SOA software

Hello,
I am a computer science student at the Fachhochschule Aachen in Germany and i'm writing my master thesis about serviceoriented architectures.
Amongst other products i plan to present what oracle has to offer for SOA. But i'm missing some information, which i couldn't find at the website. I hope somebody can help me with my questions:
1) Is it correct that you only need the Application Server and the SOA Suite for a basic SOA setup? And the SOA Suite is included in the Enterprise Edition of the Application Server?
2) The SOA Suite contains the BPEL Process Manager. I just want to know which version of BPEL this tool supports: BPEL4WS 1.0, 1.1, WS-BPEL (2.0)?
3) In my thesis i describe several standards that help with serviceoriented architectures. I want to check if these standards are implemented and if they are, in which product, which version and how extensively? These standards are:
- WS-Policy, WS-Adressing
- JBI (Java Business Integration)
- SCA/SDO (Service Component Architecture/Service Data Objects)
- WS-CDL (Web Service Choreography Description Language)
Are there other important (open) standards i didn't mention (other than the real basic stuff, WSDL, SOAP etc)?
4) What tools does Oracle provide for testing the services and processes?
5) What support does Oracle provide for new customers, that are building their first SOA?

• Question about architecture

Hello
I have a question.
I have been working in a Content Management with Java at my job.
The Java architect proposed the following architecture as solution.
----WEB LAYER----
JSP
Struts
----Business Layer----------
Manager Classes
Hibernate
----Data Layer----
DB
The web server is Tomcat V6 and MySQL is the database
I have a dude about this architecture. In order to don't use persistence objects in the WEB layer(because it cause Permgen memory problems), the Manager Classes will have methods to transform persistence objects to DTO objects(these objects will be used in the web layer), with the use of getters and setters. I think that these changes wouldn't solve the memory problems.
What is your opinion about this architecture? Do you have any idea to improve it?
Thanks for all.
Nickolas

Using persistence objects in the web layer shouldn't in itself increase your memory usage, but I can imagine that it would make it a lot easier to write buggy code with memory leaks.
Having done this sort of thing for years, my advice with this sort of architecture is:
1) Don't use JSPs, which stink. Use Velocity instead, or some other lighter-weight way to format the user-visible content.
2) Keep the web tier as thin and light as possible. Because a lot of frameworks (like Struts) provide some tools to manage data, there's a tendency to put lots of business logic there (and if there's an explicit business logic layer, often it isn't utilized). Don't. It becomes unmanageable.
Try writing your app without a web tier at all. Imagine creating a command-line-only interface to your business logic. (Or, a JUnit interface or the like.) Then wrap the web tier around it. This actually makes for easier testing as well.
3) Swapping data between data objects is the path to madness. Try object-oriented programming instead. Design your app with classes that have well-defined responsibilities. Keep data close to the operations that use it. Encapsulate as fervently as you can.
As for the rest of your post -- I have no idea what you're trying to accomplish, or even demonstrate, with your example.
