Socket 754 K8N Neo Platinum
Guys I need your help.... dudes it's been a rough night. Last night I ran the MSI Update program and it found a new BIOS for my Socket 754 MSI-7030 MSI K8N Neo Platinum. So I installed 1.90 and rebooted, well tried to. The shutdown was ok and the reboot consisted of the drive lights going on, drives whirring, and then going off. That was it.
I reset, the same thing happened; I cycled the power the same thing happened. I went to bed deciding I would crawl around looking for the CMOS reset jumpers in the morning. I couldn't sleep so I got my pocket PC and did some searching and found some similar problems on the web.
I got up and hard reset the BIOS. It started and I could get as far as the BIOS but not boot Windoze. I reset BIOS to defaults, no joy. I turned some extras off like USB storage support, no joy. Eventually I remembered someone on the forums saying that he changed his memory to 333 bus speed from 400 and it boots for him (he also has Corsair memory). So I did this and now I am booted into WINDOWS!
I tried to flash the BIOS to the 1.50 version (I have no floppy drive so I use the MSI version of Winflash) it errored half way through :-( So I tried to run the updater and try to install 1.90 again so that the reboot wont bork my PC with half a BIOS. The flash is very slow then I get a verify error at 2%.
I am now worried, very worried. I don't want to shutdown the PC
Heeeellllppp!!!!

Hi
Sorry to hear that you rebooted, but this can hopefully be a good thing for us two guys stuck with our systems on...
Can you please try a bios rescue floppy disc? As far as I have read, this is simply just a bootable DOS disk with the award
flash utility and the MSI bios added to the autoexec.bat file. Apparently the bootblock in your bios will try to boot your
floppy disk, and will run the flash command in the autoexec.bat file and will flash the bios. You wont be able to see anything
on screen, but you should see the floppy disk reading.
Official details of how to do this are in this forum sticky:
https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=81017.0
It has links to bootable floppy images, and links to procedures.
Please let us know if this worked, and the exact procedure you used, we would be very grateful

No power on Socket 754 K8N Neo Platinum 7030-010
Hi, all -
I've stripped the system down to just:
Neo Platinum part MSI-7030-010
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (Socket 754) - retail, so original AMD HSF
512MB Corsair XMS PC3200 - half of an original 1gb TwinX pair
Dual 74gb WD Raptors in Raid 0, but tested with them detached.
Lite-on DVD burner (I misremember the model), but tested with it detached.
MSI Fx5500 AGP vid card, but tested with it pulled out.
No overclocking at all.
Standard PS2 Mouse and KB, though I also yanked those and tested with no better results.
This is sitting in a case that came with a QMax 330W psu:
+3.3 - 28A
+5 - 35A
+12 - 16A
+5VSB - 2A
-5V - 0.3A
-12V - 0.8A
"+5/+3.3 total 200W max"
"+5/+3.3/+12 total 330W max"
The whole system has been working juuuust fine since last August.
I built the rig for a friend, so here's their story - it suddenly started making a funny noise (thought to be PSU?) and the top of the case (above the PSU) was hot to the touch. Powered down and went to dinner. Later, it will not power up. You push the button, and there's NOTHING. No clicks, no temporary fan whirs, nothing. You could hear a pin drop.
I tested the PSU as far as starting it up, and it does start, but I don't have the equipment to test it for voltages. I tested the mobo as far as shorting out the power switch jumper with a screwdriver, and NOTHING. I also plugged in another psu that I had sitting around, with the same results. I was able to get the 2nd PSU to start while still plugged into the mobo, and the "D-Link 2" LEDs start at 4 red, and stay at 4 red.
My biggest clue is that manually shorting the power switch jumper on the mobo does nothing. I have entered an RMA request to MSI, but if anyone else has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks!
RobThanks for the resource!
Two others I've read claim that I need no more than 300W under full load. I'll have them replace the PSU anyway.
MSI approved the mobo RMA, though, and I just disassembled the machine. Turns out that the stock AMD HSF - the one that came with the CPU - which I attached with the heatsink goo that came with the CPU - has cemented itself to the CPU. I "gently" pried the hsf out of the socket and it took the CPU with it!
I can't get the CPU off of the heatsink without some serious work.
Has anyone run into THAT one before? -

Plugged it in & I was in business. -
Bios from my Msi k8n Neo Platinum (socket 754)
Wich is the last beta bios from my Msi k8n Neo Platinum (socket 754) ?
And where download?
ThanksA thread here , from when 1.56 appeared:
MSI K8N Neo Plat Beta Bios 1.56
and when 1.55 appeared:
New Bios For MSI K8N Neo Platinum [ 1.55]
Seems to me that the 1.5x series were focused on chipset timings and ram .
Another thing is that i can boot from a usb pen with this one .(never got it to work with others) .
Beta bioses don't come with a changelog , they leak out . So any complete
list of changes is not possible to provide. -
K8N Neo Platinum 754 1t/2t
Hey guys,
This may have been answered, but on a K8N Neo Platinum 754 with 3200+ Athlon, how do I access my 1T/2T Ram timings? Also, is the BIOS fixed yet (1.5) for this motherboard, or do you know where a beta can be found without the bugs, suchs as non adjustable HyperTrans speeds and unstable system performace. Thanks all!!!

Turn on PC with keyboard [K8N Neo Platinum]
Is it possible to turn your pc on by pressing a button on your keyboard? I have a friend with an old pc (1,5 ghz P4), and he claims that he can turn his pc on that way.
So technically I'm asking you if you know how to do that. Is there a BIOS option in which you can configure the keyboard button on which your computer will respond and go on automatically? That would be very handy.
My motherboard is the K8N Neo Platinum with a 3000+ socket 754. He has an ASUS motherboard.
Thanks.Check the manual. It should be an option in the bios. I have it in my bios for my board, but when I helped someone put together their machine with a K8N Platinum 2, I didn't see this as an option in that bios. It may be that power on by keyboard and/or mouse is not an option for your board.

MSI K8N Neo Platinum and hyperttransport
Can someone please explain to me how MSI K8N Neo Platinum uses hypertransport? What is the option in the bios for hypertransport used for? What is it's advantages/disadvantages?

2 * 800MHz = 1600MHz or 1.6GHz
I'm sure you've seen AMD advertise a 1600MHz HyperTransport in response to Intel's 800MHz FSB.
To my knowledge, you can't use the 5x multiplier in Socket 754 (unless you underclock the Front Side Bus?)
The 5x will be available on Socket 939.
Ah. That's very enlightening. Thanks for the info. -
MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition Low Benchmark scores
Hi, can someone please help?
I have these details of my friends new PC :
MSI K8N NEO Platinum Edition
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2 GHz Socket 754, 512 KB cache
Corsair Value S. PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB
I have run a sandra memory bandwidth test on it and I think he gets really low scores for his spec.
int buff'd 2657
float buff'd 2656
This is the scores he gets un tweaked and not overclocked. Do these sound like reasonable out of the box scores??
Any information would be appreciatedQuote

not 100% true either beacuse if you then run encoding apps etc which are mem bandwidth dependant the 3C would own. it is not true to say they are not real world results, just games and most apps dont bottleneck on the mem bandwidth.....now that is will be different on 64-bit coding but of course the A64 would still own the 3C on them.
just for the record i would never buy an intel. -
K8N Neo Platinum - Powers Up Powers Down.
Ok, this problem has been around for nearly 2 years, but havnt addressed it since the machine wasnt being used. Now, however I must resurrect it!
Running a K8N Neo Platinum (MS-730 v1), the only hardware I have in it a Sapphire Radeo 9700XT card which I have tested and is ok. No RAM in the box, no HD's, CD/DVD, completely barebones.
Power supply is Thermaltake PurePower 420W confirmed working.
When I power on the box with the CPU and heatsink installed, all fans spin up, for about 10 seconds then everything goes dead. No beeps, nothing.
With the CPU out of the box, powering up the box, everything stays powered on a'ok. Nothing dies. So, what do you think? CPU or Board?
Processor is AMD Athlon 64 3400+ ClawHammer 2.2GHz Socket 754. Yes, I have cleared the CMOS, and replaced the BIOS battery. The memory is golden, should still get to post screen even w/ no memory installed.

take CPU out and find a way to test it somewhere else. if CPU is fine, then must be failure mainboard if we dismiss PSU factor(you have already tested with 2 PSU's good ones) -
The same old problem with temperatures (K8N Neo Platinum)
I have problems since bios v1.0 on my K8N Neo Platinum with temeparutes.
I have installed a Prometeia Mach II St colling unit
I Tested the v1.0 official bios, the temperature was allways -65º full ou idle, what it is impossivel.
In the moment i flashed the bios to v1.2b5, temperature changed to 49º, and I did not move in nothing. The same temperature appears in all bios since v1.2b5. Now I have the v1.4b2 bios
Sorry the Bad EnglishHere are the instructions to reflash the BIOS for your K8 Neo. I am currently running ver.1.4 with little problems. My only snafu is the LED for my optical mouse stays lit even when system is off, however I have no RAID, Ethernet, onboard sound, or SATA drives. I have just a simple basic system, and I don't overclock. My board is the K8 Neo Platinum socket 754, with an AMD64 3000+. YOU MUST HAVE A FLOPPY DRIVE CONNECTED TO SYSTEM FOR THESE INSTRUCTIONS TO WORK!.
Flashing BIOS on K8 Neo per MSI. READ ALL instructions before starting.
1.Check your BIOS for flashing protection and disable it.
2. Know your board model#. a. Open case and find model# on the board between the PCI slots, or b., boot system and at first DOS screen you will see 'W7030ver1.4122101'. This means you have a MSI model 7030 motherboard with BIOS version 1.4 issued on 12/21/01.
3.Download the Bios that matches your motherboard model and version#.(I believe the Neo Plat had two versions, 1.0 and 1.1). I have 1.0. It will be found between the PCI slots. Create a folder on C: drive labeled 'C:\TEST'
4.EXtract the BIOS file to C:\TEST folder.
5.Create a boot floppy. For XP, at Desktop double click My Computer, right click floppy drive, click Format to format the disk, then click 'Create MS-DOS Boot Disk'.
6. Set boot order to floppy. Hit F11 to select boot device.
7. Insert boot floppy and restart system.
8. At A:\ prompt type in the following,
C:\ (enter)
cd\TEST(enter)
awdfl833c(space)w7030nms.130
The w7030nms.130 is the BIOS file name you downloaded to C:\TEST. Keep in mind you're dealing with DOS file names, so you may need to open a DOS window in Windows, and search C drive for the TEST folder and write down the DOS file name of the BIOS file BEFORE you start the BIOS update.
9. Reboot when prompted. It shouldn't take more than 10 seconds to update the BIOS. -
K8N Neo Platinum BIOS 1.4 temperatures
When I upgraded my K8N Neo Platinum from BIOS version 1.3 to 1.4 temperatures jumped up by 7 to 10 degrees and average vcore dropped by about .03 volts (both read from Core Center).
Both readings reverted back when I switched back to BIOS 1.3. I'm just concerned as to which is more accurate. I was planning on doing some mild overclocking on this system, but if the 1.4 readings are right (51C idle) then I don't have much room.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Any idea on which temps are more accurate?
My system:
K8N Neo Platinum (socket 754)
A 64 3400 (Newcastle)
Enermax 550 watt power supply
Thermaltake Venus 12 CPU coolerIf you check around you will see, especially as applies to Neo2s the temp numbers are all screwed up. With all prior bioses my computer showed temps ranging from +175 to -128 irrespective of load.
This is especially irksome as I am vapor cooling and know from an external temp probe I installed right on top of the heat spreader on the CPU that I am running well below zero even under full load.
I cannot comment on the 1.41 bios yet because my board decided to blow up a capacitor last week and I haven't received my replacement yet. -
