Socket 754 vs. 939

I'm buying a new board and want to know what the difference is between a socket 754 and a socket 939 which shoul I go with?

The new socket 939 cpu's now support dual-channel memory configurations. Socket 754 users are tied down to using single-channel memory. The addition of dual-channel memory ability effectively doubled the memory bandwidth of the on-die memory controller. Remember, the Athlon64 cpu's do not have to reply on a northbridge to transfer memory and graphics data to and from the cpu. This, in theory, results in much lower latency and higher bandwidth. Socket 754 cpu's support 64bit DDR SDRAM at 100, 133, 166, and 200Mhz. Now the socket 939 cpu's support 128bit memory at the same frequencies, so you can see the obvious advantage there. The newer socket 939 cpu's memory controller also supports up to four unbufferred dims, whereas the socket 754 solution only supported three. The 939's also benefit from a faster Hyper Transport bus speed(read front side bus). Socket 754 was limited to 800Mhz or 3.2Gb/sec in each direction but now 939 cpu's get a full 1000Mhz or 4Gb/sec in each direction. Generally speaking, the 939 cpu's are running cooler than their socket 754 counterparts, I would say mostly due to the fact that the socket 939 cpu requires less voltage. So, as you can see there are several reason's why a socket 939 Athlon64 cpu may be the better buy when compared to socket 754, especially considering the price difference is hardly even $50 on average from 754 to 939 in the same class, i.e. 3200+ socket 754 vs. 3200+ socket 939.

    I have just upgraded my memory, thinking about a further upgrade towards the end of the year, my gfx card is out the ark but not worth updating until the final part of my upgrade, by definition this has locked me out of any early adoption of a M2?? solution.

    Probably going to be a 939. it doesn' t make sense anyway. But guys like us do want to be at the bleeding technology edge
    So for the heck of it we will squeeze out some more dineiros for a 939 and the right peripherals, like:

    So here is my first question, which is relevant to all the above:
    ? What seems to be the problem and my CPU clock is limited to 2GHz? I've tried many different things on BIOS but unfortunately my Clock Multiplier can not be more than 10x? Is this a problem with my mainboard? Should I try to flash the BIOS?
    Some more thoughts:
    If I try to increase the FSB Frequency, then I get the expected speedups on my programs as long as the change is small. For example, if I set the FSB Frequency on 210 MHz I actually encounter a 5% (about) speedup in my performance. The problem is that on execution time, this FSB frequency changes (actually increases) and that can be onserved from CoreCenter. So as a result, I can not change the frequency that much since system hangs if it exceeds 240Mhz on FSB on execution time (I have reached 239 MHz at most without stability problems on execution time) - this value was obtained (if I remember correctly) by setting the FSB on 215 MHz, when my next step on 220 MHz caused a system crash soon afterwards...
    Can you please help me so that I can have a 3000+ performance?
    I know for sure that this is a problematic system setup, since my pc behaves more or less on execution times like one of a friend of mine which uses a plain AMD Athlon XP @ 2400 MHz. Needless to say, If I try to make a comparison of the current setup with a Pentium Processor, my system is equivalent to that of a Pentium @ 1,4 GHz (about) which is really irritating.

    Test Beds: I use some programs I 've written in order to have a comperative analysis of my CPU. Hopefully, when this problem is fixed I will provide you with some useful feedback. This is the least I can do for your help.

    ? I have a Microsoft Intelli Wheel Mouse which doesn't close whenever I close my system. Why this thing happens? Is there a way of making that PS-2 mouse close whenever my system shutsdown?

  • MSI K8N NEO3-F Socket 754 NVIDIA nForce4 ATX

    I must not have stated my problem clearly. When I built my computer I turned on the power from the back, and the case lit up. (power switch on PSU) I was excited because this was my first build. When the bios popped up, it did not detect my hard drive. I then shut down the computer. I resat the ATA cables heading to my hard drive. When I went to turn the computer back on, the PC wouldn't start. I tried resitting everything on my Computer. I tried using only one RAM, resat video card, CPU, and even tried resetting the cmos.
    Eventually I found that if I pull the lithium battery from my motherboard, my computer will turn on. The computer will run without the battery, or if I resit the battery. The battery on a motherboard only deals with the bios and the time and such. It doesn't make any sense at all. I am going to test my powersupply tomarrow and then my video card on a laiter date. I have tried replacing the battery. Getting around this problem wass not hard, I have installed games that look phenomal. I was succesfully able to install my OS also. Resetting the bios on every load up is not fun.
    My other recent problem has been with the video card though(this is why im going to test with another VC). When I resit the battery after shut down, and turn my PC back on, the Video Card over powers it self. For three minutes the monitor wont recognize my card and my card pushes as if it was running DOOM3. Finally it steadies out and the monitor turnes on. Please help me out if you have any good info for me. I'll try anything at this point. I'm not computer illeterate.
    I am an Intern with TWC's IT departement. I am also going to school for computer science. The A++ side of computing I had never learned.

    MaYBE I'm not really understanding the problem here...Are you trying to use the switch on the PSU to begin the boot process?  If so, hopefully, you should continue to have trouble doing that, it's not supposeed to work that way.  If the computer starts with the power switch on the PSU there might be a problem with the CMOS jumper, jbat1, being in the wrong position...continue to post your changes and progress and someone will continue to help you, there's a lot of good heads around here, but there's a lot of guys with problems too...add as much of your configuration info to your signature as you can find out, that will help us help you as well...

  • K8N Neo Platinum (socket 754) is it any good to oc?

    I am planning to build AMD 64 system, and that socket 754 is suitable to my budjet.
    But is that board easy to overclock? i have been thinking to get an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ prosessor on it... any better ideas near that price?  
    And what about those athlon's multiplier, can it be chanced lower from bios or is it locked?

    If you don't need the extras like firewire, 4 sata and 7:1 audio then get the Neo-FSR. I have both the Platinum and FSR and the FSR smokes my Platinum. No problems running 250 1:1 or 300htt using the divider. The FSR is also newer than the Plat. were there is no need to set agp bus at 67 or 68 to get your max OC, leave it at 66 and enjoy.
    My FSR also seems more friendly to different types of ram chips, like Samsung TCCD, Micron 5G or Hynix chips.
    Also the price of just over $100 makes it a nice buy. If you order one I suggest any ram with Samsung TCCD chips will give you the best performance. Note I have not tried any bh-5 chips on this board.
    Also you could save the extra $20 and put it towards a 3200+, I say this cause the 11x might come in handy instead of the 10x on the 3000+ to achieve max OC on your cpu. Newegg had some nice 3200+ NC(512) CG cores that will do 2.6 on air pretty easy. I have one and does 2.75 stable under my waterblock.

  • Socket 754 K8N Neo Platinum

    Guys I need your help.... dudes it's been a rough night. Last night I ran the MSI Update program and it found a new BIOS for my Socket 754 MSI-7030 MSI K8N Neo Platinum. So I installed 1.90 and rebooted, well tried to. The shutdown was ok and the reboot consisted of the drive lights going on, drives whirring, and then going off. That was it.
    I reset, the same thing happened; I cycled the power the same thing happened. I went to bed deciding I would crawl around looking for the CMOS reset jumpers in the morning. I couldn't sleep so I got my pocket PC and did some searching and found some similar problems on the web.
    I got up and hard reset the BIOS. It started and I could get as far as the BIOS but not boot Windoze. I reset BIOS to defaults, no joy. I turned some extras off like USB storage support, no joy. Eventually I remembered someone on the forums saying that he changed his memory to 333 bus speed from 400 and it boots for him (he also has Corsair memory). So I did this and now I am booted into WINDOWS!
    I tried to flash the BIOS to the 1.50 version (I have no floppy drive so I use the MSI version of Winflash) it errored half way through :-( So I tried to run the updater and try to install 1.90 again so that the reboot wont bork my PC with half a BIOS. The flash is very slow then I get a verify error at 2%.
    I am now worried, very worried. I don't want to shutdown the PC

    Sorry to hear that you rebooted, but this can hopefully be a good thing for us two guys stuck with our systems on...
    Can you please try a bios rescue floppy disc?  As far as I have read, this is simply just a bootable DOS disk with the award
    flash utility and the MSI bios added to the autoexec.bat file.  Apparently the bootblock in your bios will try to boot your
    floppy disk, and will run the flash command in the autoexec.bat file and will flash the bios.  You wont be able to see anything
    on screen, but you should see the floppy disk reading.

    Seems to me that the 1.5x series were focused on chipset timings and ram .
    Another thing is that i can boot from a usb pen with this one .(never got it to work with others) .
    Beta bioses don't come with a changelog , they leak out . So any complete
    list of changes is not possible to provide.

  • No power on Socket 754 K8N Neo Platinum 7030-010

    Hi, all -
    I've stripped the system down to just:
    Neo Platinum part MSI-7030-010
    AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (Socket 754) - retail, so original AMD HSF
    512MB Corsair XMS PC3200 - half of an original 1gb TwinX pair
    Dual 74gb WD Raptors in Raid 0, but tested with them detached.
    Lite-on DVD burner (I misremember the model), but tested with it detached.
    MSI Fx5500 AGP vid card, but tested with it pulled out.
    No overclocking at all.
    Standard PS2 Mouse and KB, though I also yanked those and tested with no better results.
    This is sitting in a case that came with a QMax 330W psu:
    +3.3 - 28A
    +5 - 35A
    +12 - 16A
    +5VSB - 2A
    -5V - 0.3A
    -12V - 0.8A
    "+5/+3.3 total 200W max"
    "+5/+3.3/+12 total 330W max"
    The whole system has been working juuuust fine since last August.
    I built the rig for a friend, so here's their story - it suddenly started making a funny noise (thought to be PSU?) and the top of the case (above the PSU) was hot to the touch. Powered down and went to dinner. Later, it will not power up. You push the button, and there's NOTHING. No clicks, no temporary fan whirs, nothing. You could hear a pin drop.
    I tested the PSU as far as starting it up, and it does start, but I don't have the equipment to test it for voltages. I tested the mobo as far as shorting out the power switch jumper with a screwdriver, and NOTHING. I also plugged in another psu that I had sitting around, with the same results.  I was able to get the 2nd PSU to start while still plugged into the mobo, and the "D-Link 2" LEDs start at 4 red, and stay at 4 red.
    My biggest clue is that manually shorting the power switch jumper on the mobo does nothing. I have entered an RMA request to MSI, but if anyone else has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

    Two others I've read claim that I need no more than 300W under full load. I'll have them replace the PSU anyway.
    MSI approved the mobo RMA, though, and I just disassembled the machine. Turns out that the stock AMD HSF - the one that came with the CPU - which I attached with the heatsink goo that came with the CPU - has cemented itself to the CPU. I "gently" pried the hsf out of the socket and it took the CPU with it!
    I can't get the CPU off of the heatsink without some serious work.
    Has anyone run into THAT one before?

    my motherboard listed below does not support dual channel? i thought it did =[ I just bought some corsair xms 3200 DC 2x512 sticks to replace my 1x512 mushkin. Should I leave in the mushkin with my xms?
    btw if it matters.. im not OCing, and my psu sucks..

    My whole system is running damned stable, except for not POSTing on a cold boot sometimes - I haven't worked out why this is just yet but I'm guessing it's something to do with MSI's badly engineered BIOSes. It seemed to have a lot of trouble cold POSTing on 300HTT so hence it being at 302 (I just put it up from 301 as it didn't POST properly this morn).
    Anyway, feel free to ask any questions - I've bookmarked this thread and will definately check back.

  • KT8 Neo (socket 754) Ram speed

    I remember reading here several months ago, if you run 2ea. 256K sticks, mixed with 1ea 512K stick, it will be impossible to run the ram @ 400MHz.  Well, sadly I'm finding this out right now.  Can someone refresh me as to why this is the case, and will it ever be addressed in a newer bios, or can it be?
    EDIT:  Does anyone else make a 754 board where it is possible to run @ 400MHz with my above senerio?

    I have 2 Nforce 2 computer in addition to my MSI system.  Trust me when I tell you the Nforce 2 motherboard (chipset) is far less problematic.  They are stable as a rock, and are not fussy about most anything.  On the other hand, my MSI/VIA motherboard/chipset has not been nearly as fun to work with.  Besides this latest memory issue, it simply has not been as stable as my Nforce 2 motherboards.  I'm not sure what motherboard I'm going with next, but VIA/MSI has not really left a good impression.

    Has anybody had any success with installing memory in all the available dimms slots and managing to keep the memory running at full speed? I have currently 2x 512MB of Corsair Valueram installed and I am considering getting another.... Only if I don't have to sacrifice memory speed though.

    I've borrowed a stick from another pc at work and just whacked it in.... It does downclock to 166. 
    But I've just used A64 Tweaker to force it to run at 200mhz and it is!!! 2T timing has to be enabled though or it crashes..... Sandra reports that it is running at 200mhz and my bandwidth is about 2650 MB/s down from 2970... I can put up with that I suppose 
    It's running 3dmark now so we'll see if it crashes.
