SOCKS + SSL = trouble (Safari crashes, Mail.app doesn't connect)

I use a SOCKS (v4) proxy over an SSH tunnel to connect to applications at work, as do many of my co-workers.
Safari will often (even usually) crash hard when using SOCKS if you try to connect to an SSL (i.e. https://) site.
We recently migrated to IMAP over SSL for Mail, and Mail.app cannot connect successfully to the IMAP server; it gets a generic "SSL error" (NOT a certificate error).
Both work fine over a plain SSH tunnel, and both work fine without SOCKS. Firefox and Thunderbird work fine over SOCKS for such sites (note that they don't use the system-wide settings/libraries). Other users at my workplace are seeing the same behaviour.
It seems to me that there might be a bug in the SOCKS implementation, or SSL libraries, or combination thereof, provided by OSX.
Can anyone else confirm this?

I know nothing about your problem, but wonder if this older article on 10.4.7 "fixing" the problem, mighn't give you a clue or two...

    using Lion

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Ipad 4 after update to IO8 Safari and Mail App would not start

I have updated my Apple Ipad 4 to IOS8.
    Modell MD510FD/A
After this update Safari and Mail App do not start. It open the app a short time and closed by itself.
I have restarted the Ipad for 3 times. But the problem still happen.

    Hi t.reiterer,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Since these are native apps that come with the OS, it sounds like a reinstall is in order.  A full backup first, then restore.
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If a regular restore doesn't help.  Try a restore as new.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
Again, make sure you have a good backup first.
    Best Regards,

I can't open the app store, safari the mail app, youtube app and the maps app. they try to open then close very quickly. what can I do?

Try downloading another app - any free app - that seems to reset something and the apps may start working again. Try that first. If that doesnt work, try these steps
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Close all apps. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Mail app doesn't work

Mail app doesn't work after Yosemite OSX upgrade. At first it didn't check email and now it doesn't boot. I tried many times, but nothing happens

Ok after nearly going crazy I read something about someone having a problem with a program related to fonts not being installed. I started up font book and now my problem is miraculously resolved... This is good and bad. I don't know why having font book running would resolve my problem or know what font is causing the programs not to work. As far as I know I didn't disable any system fonts. And the problem doesn't happen when font book is running, which is confusing me.

Hello, after I updated to 6.1.3 on my iphone 4 everything worked fine, till I rebooted my phone, now all of a sudden my safari and mail apps do not work. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this? Everytime I try and restore my iphone i get: The phone "Justin's Phone" could not be restored. This device isnt eligilbe for the requested build. I even reverted to my last saved back up (this back up was on June 13) and a back up from december 2012 and the safari and mail app still do not work. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you all for your help,

    Hello Justin,
I would recommend taking a look at steps 4 and 5 in the article below.

If your issues persist, then you may need to restore the iOS software.

  • Safari, Software Update and Mail apps won't connect

Safari, Software Update and Mail apps won't connect to the Internet. Software Update fails with a suggestion of running Network Diagnostic. Network diagnostic says everything is fine. Firefox connects without any problems. Any ideas. This is my work computer and I need it to work.

Fixed it myself. Under network settings "Auto Proxy Discovery" was enabled. When I turned this off everything started working again. Not sure how this was enabled in the first place.

  • Safari and Mail.app crash with SIGSEGV after Monolingual / upgrade

In order to upgrade to snow leopard, I had to free a bunch of disk space. So, I foolishly ran Monolingual to remove unused languages. I don't recall exactly which I removed, but I do remember that I did not remove Japanese. I then upgraded to Snow Leopard, but now I have a Safari and a Mail.app that crash consistently with segmentation faults.
Mail.app crashes anytime I attempt to view a message with Japanese characters in it. I click the subject line, it tries to display it, and then crashes with a segmentation fault in Dispatch queue: com.apple.root.default-priority in the com.apple.datadetectorscore _FillNextTokenInCache method.
Safari crashes in HistoryTextCache caching from the method com.apple.SearchKit UniCharParserGetNextWord after a few pages (5m) of browsing. Doesn't seem to matter what pages I'm viewing. Although I can force it to crash just after successfully rendering a page with japanese characters by visiting such a page.
They repeatably crash the same way. Is there any way to fix this without having to reinstall the OS?

I'm still having this problem. Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    eric

  • Using GMail as the mail app doesn't work

I have Firefox 11.0, OS X 10.7.3 Lion. In Firefox, I go to Preferences / Applications, and set the default MailTo app handler as GMail. I restarted Firefox, when I click on a mailto link nothing happens (just the click highlight). I installed Google Notifier, and when I launch the Mail app, I made sure the default mail program is Google Notifier. Still doesn't work.

Interestingly enough, clicking a hyperlink from Safari works great - launches Firefox tab with a new message composed.

  • Sample Rule Action Script.scpt crashes mail app sometimes

Hi, I know next to nothing about applescript, but today came across a post which seemed like it could be solved with a little rule triggered AppleScript action. So I ...
    1. dug up the 'Sample Rule Action Script.scpt', and copied it into ~/Library/Scripts/Applications/Mail/
    2. created a rule which applied to all email messages and triggered the script
    3. selected a message, and hit cmd option L to apply rules to the selection
and up popped an alert panel. (expected behavior) But only the first time and only on one of my two machines. On the other Mail.app crashed. (unexpected behavior)
But then I found I couldn't reliably run it repeatedly on the first machine after all. So I repaired permissions. Now I get the crashing behavior reliably.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? The script is the one everyone should have under:
    /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts/Rule Actions/Sample Rule Action Script.scpt

hello Camelot. I hope this is not too far afield in this thread but its as close I can find in the current discussion topics. I've been attempting to write a script to filter flagged messages from the old messages (> 6 days old) I want to delete. I use the rule to send it to my script as you discuss. My script doesn't function but when I replace it with the Sample Rule Script, things run like a charm. (Although the text that Craig sites doesn't run.) My question is what's wrong with my script that it is not triggered. It is as follows, it is compiled, and I added a sound command to try and debug it. It didn't work.
    using terms from application "Mail"
on perform mail action with messages theMessages
    tell application "Mail"
play sound ..........+These 2 lines added in an attempt to ascertain if the messages where even passing+
"Basso" ..................+through the script. No sound resulted; syntax?+
set theflaggedstatus to flagged status of eachMessage
if flagged status is false then
    delete message
    end if
    end tell
end perform mail action with messages
    end using terms from
The result is no result, nothing, nada. The old messages stay in the mailbox whether they are flagged or not. I inserted a standard change color of message rule above and below the "run Applescript" rule command and the messages are colored as they should be but the Applescript is not functioning. My script, at this point, seems overly complex for what it is, but it is the result of numerous attempts to get it working. I have a number of similar scripts written with basically the same consequence.
If this post is outside the thread here, my apologies, if it is maybe you can redirect my inquiries. thanks tT

  • New ios safari and mail app bug!

after installed the new ios 7.0.2 safari crashes and is slower. even more serious is the problem with mail app which now is useless!! are they gone to fix this serious problems or I lost the most important apps of my device?

  • Yosemite Mail.app doesn't MIME decode certain mail attachments

My CCTV system sends short e-mails with 4 lines of text and a .JPG attachment.
These e-mails can be read fine on Mavericks and iOS 8, but not on Yosemite:
On Yosemite OS X 10.10 (14A389) Mail Version 8.0 (1990.1) the attachment is still MIME/base64 encoded (and therefore doesn't open as a JPG picture).
If I save the attached non-working ".jpg" file and the copy/paste the content to something like http://tomeko.net/online_tools/base64.php?lang=en , the hex data of the correct image file is decoded. But of course, I want Mail to do that for me...
This happens with mails when received from the IMAP server as well as with mails that were received a year ago and stored in a local folder (and of course worked fine a year ago with the Mac OS X version at that time).
    Filed as rdar://18701360
    Cheers
    mh

Note that the line break before "boundary=——part1——" after the base64 encoded attachment ist missing, so that the problematic e-mails are technically not 100% RFC 1341 compliant.
However, no other e-mail client I have tested has a problem with this, including the Mail app that came with Mavericks, so I would really expect that Apple should not degrade the compatibility with slightly-off e-mails from 10.9 to 10.10.
Especially because I cannot change the source of these e-mails, an embedded system that worked there for a long time already and I'm sure there will _not_ be a firmware update because of this.

  • Mail.app doesn't hava connection with imap server when changing network.

Ive got a strange problem after upgrading OSX from 10.6.8 to 10.8.4.
I have got a xserve, with osx 10.6.8. (mail) server installed on it.
When i am in the office (LAN) mail works just fine. if iam home and wake my macbook from sleeping i see in the mail app the attention mark telling my something is wrong with the mail account.
If i open the connection doctor it say's can't connect to IMAP server. if i check my iOS devices there is nothing wrong, everything is working and i can send/recieve mail. on iOS and OSX the settings are the same with SSL enabled and password type.
When i tried to telnet the mailserver address with the IMAP or SMTP port i get a connection. so, there is no firewall blokking my connection.
But now the strange thing when i quit my mail.app and start it again the mail gets connection again. So is there a problem when changing networks when the Mail.App is stil active?

That's just to bad, will it be solved in a future release of OSX?
I don't know... maybe Apple will force me migrating to Mavaricks.
it seems that although w'r using DNS, the outside ip gets remebered or the connection isn't closed down properly when putting the macbook to sleep.
I can try offcource to configure the outside LANip (Non dns) in my mail client.
    I will post with results..
