Soft break should force justify text

Hello
Got a bit of a problem in Pages.
I'm using a 2 column text block with justified text.
I want to insert a soft break, which would supposedly force justify my text to the right.
I hit Shift+Enter and all i get is a normal paragraph break…
Any clues on how to fix this?
i've tried to export my document to Word and change it there, but even in Word it doesn't work… I'm baffled.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Nuno

Nuno,
I'm curious where in the Pages documentaton it describes the behavior you are calling a bug. In my opinion, t works the way it was designed to work. You can call it a missing feature if you wish, but it doesn't look like a bug to me.

  • Pages breaks words using "Justify text" on certain accented characters

    I'm working on a document in Hungarian, and it seems that when I use the "justified text" setting, this puts extra white space around certain accented characters.
    Please see these screenshots:
    http://www.kkovacs.hu/~kkovacs/Pages-bug-with-accented-words.jpg
    In this case, "időszak" should be a single word, and it is, when I write it as "Idõszak" (using õ instead of ő, but this is not the character that is needed there). The problem seems independent of the font that I use (Big Caslon, in the example above).
    Is there a way to work around this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kristóf

    Hello
    My old eyes fooled me.
    I saw a "lowercase o with a tilde" when it was a "lowercase o with double acute"
    With your font which is a bit more recent than mine, the missing glyph is grabbed from an other font (I didn't search which one it is).
    I didn't got what was in your original screenshot.
    I just get a character with a fully different drawing.
    It's funny because it's the kind of problem RC-R and me where exchanging about in:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1644259&tstart=0
    Given what I get, I will not call that a bug but a feature that many users (most of them ?) are unaware of.
    The operating system does its best to display the character we are asking for even if it is not built in the used font.
    This trickery has PROs and CONs.
    For your use, I'm afraid that CONs are the most important and that you will have to search for a font embedding the needed characters.
    To scan the contents of a font, I uses the free Linotype FontExplorer which displays the defined glyphs in black and the missing ones in red so, it's easy to see if a font fit our needs.

  • Justify text still doesn't work correctly in Pages 2.0.1

    Justify text does not work in Pages 2 or 2.0.1 when one wishes to specify where the lines should break. It used to work in Pages 1 by using <SHIFT-RETURN>. Does anyone know a workaround?
    Thanks.

    Hello John,
    this is because of the "sero point" where the calculation between the "text paragraph align" settings and the ruler differ. In "left aligned" and "justified" the calculation begins from the left, similar to the ruler, so all works fine. But in "centered" and "right aligned" the calculation begins from the center or from the right, but the ruler calculation is in both cases from left to right.
    This is a limitation of the overall system. To get this right, the ruler has to change it's calculation direction by setting "centered" and "right aligned", too. But you continue writing from left to right, so what about the inversion of the "left" and "right aligned" tab stops?
    I don't know if you have done this, but you can send a feedback to the developer with some suggestions about this: http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html

  • Justified text wrap error CC vs CS6

    I have a client that requires text files be set up in CS6. I have set up columns of justified text in CS6 but I have several words that are flowing outside the text box. When I open the file in CC it appears correctly.
    I tried saving some test files from CC in CS6 format but still no go. Attached are images of the issue. I really hate to use forced line breaks. Is there some other setting that I'm not aware of that could help?
    I much prefer to use InDesign for text formatting but all pharmaceutical packaging companies pretty much require the use of Illustrator and most are still using CS6 or CS5 so I'm stuck.
    In CS6
    In CC
    Thank you!

    JL,
    You may try going through the following.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • CS5.0 (7.04): deleting soft breaks in TOC?

    Hello,
    in some longer headings I inserted soft breaks. Now I am creating the TOC.
    It is possible that InDesign automatically deletes my soft breaks in the TOC?
    thanks!
    Carlos

    Try putting the non-breaking space between the two words you want after the line break...
    Without seeing your headings I can't tell you if this will work, and you may have to turn off hyphenation as well, but if the column is narrow enough that both words won't fit it should force the break before the first one.

  • How to justify text vertically in multi-column frame

    How do I justify text vertically in a multi-column frame but within the baseline grid?
    Working at a very busy publication, fitting text evenly in multi-column text boxes are crucial to be done quickly! I understand that it can be done manually by adjusting the tracking in order to force the text to end evenly on bottom. However I'm looking to achieve that result automatically, pretty much like the "Justify Vertically" feature except by doing so it spreads the last column lines out, but I need to keep the text on the grid.

    You can ask over in scripting: InDesign Scripting

  • How to justify text in a TextInput vertically

    So I have a simple question: how can you justify text in a TextInput vertically?

    Yeah, sorry, I should have given more details. Basically I have a TextInput component with a height of 48 so even though it is a one line component it looks like there is a lot of space below the text. The component in question is created dynamically during run-time. So I was tasked with making the text appear in the middle (vertically) of the TextInput. Is this not possible at all? Surely there is some way to do it.
    Here is the Actionscript code that creates the components:
    import fl.controls.TextInput;
    import flash.text.TextFormatAlign;
    var gridArr:Array = new Array();
    var w = 80;
    var h = 48;
    var rowNumber = 10;
    var startX = 5;
    var startY = 30;
    var newTextFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
    newTextFormat.font = "Arial";
    newTextFormat.size = 16;
    newTextFormat.bold = true
    newTextFormat.color = 0x1E1E1E;
    newTextFormat.align = TextFormatAlign.JUSTIFY;
    newTextFormat.leading = 5;
    for (var i:Number = 0; i < 8; i++)
      gridArr[i] = new Array();
      for (var j:Number = 0; j < rowNumber; j++)
       var newCell:Cell =  new Cell();
       newCell.initialize(i, j);
       newCell.cellText.setStyle("textFormat", newTextFormat);
       newCell.cellText.width = w;
       newCell.cellText.height = h;
       newCell.x = (i*w) + startX;
       newCell.y = (j*h) + startY;
       //newCell.cellText.text = "("+newCell.gridX+","+newCell.gridY+")";
       //newCell.cellText.tabEnabled = false;
       gridArr[i][j] = newCell;
    for (j = 0; j < rowNumber; j++)
    for (i= 0; i < 8; i++)
      addChild(gridArr[i][j]);

  • Cfdocument does not support justified text

    I'm finding it impossible to justify text in a PDF created
    using cfdocument. I've tried both <p align="justify"> and CSS
    but
    neither work. If I change it to right or center it works
    which suggests justify is unsupported. Is this a bug or an
    oversight?
    I also tried putting text in P, DIV, SPAN, and tables without
    any luck. I'm using CF 7.01 Ent + hotfix 2 on Win2003. Last time I
    tried to report a bug to Macromedia they insisted I paid $500
    first. Does Adobe have a more professional and fairer policy?
    Is anyone else finding this forum painfully slow? I think
    Adobe should invest in an extra web server or two.
    Thanks,
    Gary.

  • Cant justify text

    Am using CS3. Just want to simply justify text. text is in a bounding box. Am using soft returns, but type wont justify. ANy tips please. I've done this my entire career and today I cant get it to work. What's wrong w./me anyway?! Thanks folks.

    I see what you meant I read your post wrong and thanks for clarifying it yes this is a bug. The soft return is actually fairly new to Illustrator and it took some doing on the part of a lot of people at the forum to make it happen.
    I think they will solve this problem once they see the wisdom of incorporating another feature that is lacking which is the use of the enter key to navigate to the next column of text when a text frame has more than one column.
    I think this feature will help complete the code for the text engine so it an act like other programs and as users expect.
    Also inline graphics wil make it stronger as well.
    Once these are there I think the code will have to remove the code that restrict such expected behavior and the major problems with Illustrotrs text engine will evaporate.

  • How do i make a justifiable text box in Photoshop CS5

    Hi
    I tried to justify text but find it hard, any quick and simple ways to do it?
    Thanks

    We need less people like Tai Lao on these forums and more thoughtful, well thought out and thorough answers like the one 24/7 Tech Support gave.
    I fail to understand what you're motivation and goal is Tai Lao?
    This is precisely a board for people that are trying to learn whether they're beginners or not, or have high IQs or low IQs?
    I've been using Photoshop since 1996 and I recently got CS5 and I was searching for this exact topic, because I just wanted something comprehensive on the subject, so I don't understand why you or anyone else feels the need to get in the way of that?
    I mean, seriously, is this all for your ego? You like feeling superior to people, people you don't even know for that matter? Take your issues somewhere else. The immaturity is so obnoxious, especially when people that use these boards have work to do.
    We out here have work to do, and we need thorough answers. Sometimes, some of us, while we're in the middle or towards the end of the work day aren't even at our best or freshest and we need clear and comprehensive answers during those moments when we're not necessarily operating at our best.
    Whatever the case is, the truth is when you post answers, you should assume that the people are beginners or have "low IQs" or whatever garbage Tai Lao wrote.
    24/7 Tech Support, I hope you continue to go about with your method of presenting detailed thorough answers to the people's queries here on the Adobe boards, I'm sure I'll come across one of your USEFUL posts sometime soon in the near future, and hopefully less across the USELESS posts of those like Tai Lao.

  • Justify text with javasript help

    Hello.
    I'm using Acrobat Pro 10.1.4
    I had to create a text field in which the text is visible on screen but hidden when printing.
    So for this it seems I couldn't use the typewriter, since it didn't gave me those options.
    I had to use a Textfield and make it read only.
    I entered the text under "Options > Default Value" and it gives me only the following options for alignment:
    Alignment - Left, Center, Right
    It doesn't give me the option to justify text, and some of these texts are multiple lines.
    So I was wondering if there is a Javascipt entry that would make the text justified?
    And if there is, what other options should I use with it to make it work correctly?
    (such as should I allow rich text formatted?)

    hmm... the screenshot attached shows the only options given to me by Text Field Poperties when using the "Select Objects" arrow
    Are there options it is not showing me? That bar is the only one that comes up when pressing Ctrl+E
    no Alignment button present.
    When pressing "More..." it shows up the other Text Field Properties menu where the text is entered.

    No. Like Peter and Walt, I wonder why you'd want to, considering the appearance of such manipulation, illustrated above. Is this a requirement for some specific type of document?
    Regarding your second question, there's no way to do this using Pages as it comes out-of-the-box (or in the downloaded edition). But you can sort the paragraphs of a document alphabetically using WordService, freeware from Devon Technologies. The link will take you to their download page. Scroll down to the Freeware section and the download link for WordService.

  • Justify text in Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro

    Hallo!
    I have Adobe Acrobat Pro v 8.1 and I ask is it possible in Adobe Acrobat while editing justify text just like in Microsoft Office Word? I tried every options and solutions but nothing found to do that. I googled on internet about this topic and I found some picture (look below). On that picture see opened Adobe Acrobat (I don't know which version) with text toolbar just like in MO Word.
    Which version of Acrobat could be with that text toolbar? Is it possible at all justify text in Acrobat?
    Thanks forward for any help.

    To make it appear, press "Ctrl+E". It's known as the properties toolbar and can only be active when you interact with an element (e.g., form field, text box) that allows you to edit. The properties bar changes depending on what type of element is selected and the context.
    When creating a new PDF from a blank page, Acrobat allows you to use it, but as yoiu've found, when you save the document and reopen, it is no longer available. This is a special case and it will not work to change the text on a page with other documents.

  • How to justify text in a file?

    How do I right justify text in a file? For example:
    Checking 500
    Savings 50
    Loan 300
    NetWorth 1000
    Insurance 1000
    This is how I want my file to be formatted when it is created. Does anyone know of a way to right justify the numbers? I tried to use the "\t", tab but it doesn't work.
    Thanks

    There is no magical way to do this. Tabs can be treated differently be every editor. You must add spaces between the title and the amount yourself.
    If, however, you are going to display the text file in a JTextPane then you could delimit the title and amount with a tab character and then configure the JTextPane to right justify the amount.

  • "Justify" text in Adobe Photoshop Elements 11

    I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, and I'm trying to add a text box to my picture where the text is aligned to the edge on both the left and right sides.  So it's not left, right, or center aligned, it's what is called "Justify" in Microsoft Word.  There does not seem to be an icon to pick this in Photoshop Elements 11.  Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks,

    R_Kelly,
    I tried this.  You're right, Shift+Ctrl+F works!  I'm almost there.  What I'm actually working on is the design for the back of a book cover.  The thing I noticed is that the last line of a paragraph, which may only have three words, also gets "Justified" so there's huge spaces between the three words as they get stretched across the screen.  I tried inserting a carriage return after that last sentence and it didn't seem to help.  But I did all this after getting home late from work last night, so I need to play with it some more.
    It's odd that there's no pull down menu or icon selection that lets one "Justify" text in pse 11, even when I'm in the "Expert" mode.  Is it that in purchasing pse I bought a watered down version of photoshop.  Because all of the online tutorials I watch on youtube for different versions of photoshop have many more buttons to choose from on the screen.
    What's also odd, though, is that I designed a cover for a book last year, and I somehow got the text to be justified without this last line "spreading" issue.  I also seem to have hyphens at the right edge when the word needs to be hyphenated (again in order to avoid unsightly spacing between words).  I must be getting old, can't remember how I did that.  I did notice that I can duplicate the layer into my new design and the formatting stayed, so I guess I could do that and just type all of the new content.  It's just odd.
    I'm definitely going to spend more time with the Sift+Ctrl+F, because the capability seems to be there, it's just hidden.
    Thank you.
