Soft Brush Problem in Photoshop CS3 - edges of brush show pink banding

This is my first post but I am a relatively seasoned photoshop user. When using a soft brush for anything (coloring or masking) I am getting lines and hard edges around the outer perimeter of the brush edges. For example, if I use a 600 pxl brush set to 0% hardness and start to paint on a white background, the color at the outer edges of the paint looks pinkish and it looks like there is actually a slightly pinkish hard edge where the outermost edge of the paint stops. It should just disappear into complete transparency but I am getting this weird edge.
This is happening out of nowhere too. I have been working on this machine for at least a year with the same monitor and everything. It just started happening yesterday for no apparent reason. I tried re-installing CS3 and it didn't help. I tried resetting my preferences when starting up photoshop and that didn't help either. I have not made any changes whatsoever to my monitor settings since day one and up until now it has been working beautifully.
I am on a Mac - G5 2x3.2 Ghz Quad core processors, 8 Gb of Ram. Nvidia G-Force 8800 GT graphics card, Brand new 24" flat panel LCD set to show colors in millions... also set to Cinema HD mode which was the default setting that it was set to.
This is happening regardless of color mode - RGB or CMYK and regardless of bits per channel 8 vs 16 vs 32. Files I work on are set up at 300dpi usually in CMYK mode. It happens regardless of whether shape dynamics/smoothing/etc (brush presets) are turned on or off.
I would be happy to send anyone that can help a screenshot of what I am talking about. Please help!!!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your comments and suggestions. I really appreciate it. This has been a bit frustrating because no one else can see the issue but me I suppose. I just don't know why my monitor would change all of the sudden for no reason. I know all monitors eventually go bad but this one is only a year old and looks beautiful in every other way. No other problems with any other programs or anything. The overall color, brightness, contrast, etc are still amazing.
It is still covered under the warranty so I can take it in to the Apple store to see if they can find an issue with it. I will be sure to let you guys know what they say. I have seen this same issue on 2 other forums on other sites - one person said that after exhausting all possibilities he determined that the issue was with photoshop. The other person was getting responses back from people telling her to add noise to her files to improve the banding, which is not really a solution to the root of the problem.
Hopefully, if it is a monitor issue, recallibrating will fix the problem. I did, however, go through the callibrator assistant found in system preferences and it didn't help. Also tried to adjust the "Edit" - "Colors" setting within photoshop and that didn't help either.
Both of the Adobe support specialists that I talked to were stumped. They said that the only 2 things they could think of were the monitor or maybe the graphics card gone bad.
Anyway, thank you all again for your help. I have never used this forum before having this issue and I want to say that I really appreciate all of you stepping up to help me with my problem in such a prompt and helpful manner.

  • I am having problem with Photoshop CS3 hanging

I am having a lot of problems with Photoshop CS3 hanging and crashing. Particularly when I open hi-res photos and click on tools, like the type tool. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?
    Thanks.

Buy more RAM, plain and simple. Sounds the program is severely suffocating. for on-screen display fonts need also be rasterized, which also costs RAM, even if they otherwise remain native vectors. How much memory do you have? as a short term solution, you may wish to increase the program's RAM usage in the prefs, but it may not resolve the issues entirely.

  • Little Problem with Photoshop CS3

Hi, I have a little problem with Photoshop CS3, I'm not sure if this's because a Windows option that I messed up, but the thing is that I didn't touch any options, or some kind of preferences.
I'm talking about the "little windows" (I don't know the correct name) that come from, in this case, the Filter and Analysis options, they're coming down from their right side, and usually, the come down from their left side. This is really annoying.
Not big deal, but I can't really work properly. I hope you guys can help me, and this's my first post, I hope I didn't break any rule.

Thanks Mylenium, that was the problem, I don't even have a tablet, but that fixed my problem =)
    Thanks again.

  • Installation Problems With Photoshop CS3

I had to reinstall Photoshop CS3 on my current MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.6.
When trying to re-install using the original full version disk I received the following error:
JavaScript Alert Critical errors were found in setup -The installer database is invalid: please re-install the product from the original media. Please see the Setup log file for details.
I even even tried to down load and install the Trail Version of CS4 to see if that could be done. Same error happens.
    Any idea what has happened?
    Would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks

    Ramon,
Thanks for the input. However I tried that already with the same results.
Have no problem with Lightroom 2.2 just Photoshop CS3.
Sent Adobe a message with this problem via their support section, however they just closed the case and more or less stated my time has expired. So now I am at a stand still with CS3.
My next option is just do a complete re-install of Leopard as I do have everything backed up via Time Machine.
In the mean time I found a program called Pixelmator that works just fine until I am able find a solution for this problem.

  • Problems with Photoshop - loading filters and brushes

I'm having problems with my plug ins in Photoshop, which also includes brush sets.
There are all present and correct in the usual area you save them with in the application folders.
But when I want to use them in Photoshop either they don't show, or I get an error message saying I don't have the privileges to load them.
If you can help in any way, it would be great as I am at a loss on how I can get them to work. These are fairly critical to completing certain work (graphics for distressed T Shirts)
and would like to get them up and working before a project flies in and I can't use them.
I was able to add a few plug ins by changing the permissions on the files. But this has not solved the problem for all & I am still unable to get "MACHINE WASH DELUXE" to work.
Any help or suggestions would be useful,
    Thanks
    Stones

Sorry, the brushsets appear to be fine but it is the plugins we still have issues with.  8BF. files, they are stored under photoshop CS4 in applications, this plug in were trying to get work "MACHINE WASH DELUXE" worked on this Mac & Photoshop version previously, but on a different user account (Now a domain user, used to be a administrator that connects into the domain) Interestingly though non of the plugins work for the scanner etc, although they are in the same location as they would of been for the previous user. Not much done in trouble shooting the issue, once the brushes started to appear because we corrected the permissions, we were stumped on what move to take next.
    Thanks for you assistance

CS3 is a very old Adobe product and is not officially supported. Personally, i don't think CS3 will work on Yosemite and even if it does, by any chance, you will face many compatibility and functional issues like above.

are we no longer able to do soft breaks in photoshop anymore?
    thanks,

In what version of Photoshop could you do this? I don't recall it working in ages.

Can anyone please help me??? thank you!

    Hi AndreTheGeek;
I would like to reply to your comment about it might not apply to you on a demo.
I am here to tell you that it most certainly does apply in the case of a demo that you use the Adobe uninstall first.
I had a nightmare trying to figure out why I could not get CS3 to install after demoing PS CS3. After what felt like eternities, I finally found someone at Adobe who was able to tell me the error of my ways. It seems I had gotten so used to the idea of simply trashing applications I did that with the demo of PS CS3. He explained to me that that left behind enough bits and pieces that it was causing me troubles when I attempted to install CS3. He told me where to find the uninstall script. Once I ran that the installation worked like a charm.

  • Alt + Scroll for zoom problem with Photoshop CS3

    Running Adobe Photoshop CS3
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3
When I check the "Zoom with Scroll Wheel" box in Preferences > General:
-using zoom tool, scroll wheel will zoom out to the smallest size, but will only zoom in until image is slightly larger than the file window then slides the image left and right or up and down depending on size of file window. When image is slightly larger than the file window, zoom out doesn't work anymore
-using Alt + Scroll does nothing
-Ctrl + Scroll zooms image the way Alt + Scroll should
When I UNcheck the "Zoom with Scroll Wheel" box in Preferences > General:
-using Alt + Scroll scroll wheel will zoom out to the smallest size, but will only zoom in until image is slightly larger than the file window then will neither zoom in or out anymore
-using Ctrl + Scroll slides the image left and right
In either preference setting, using ALT key causes letters for menus in the tool bar to be underlined

  • New, improved problem with Photoshop CS3 Clone Stamp Tool

After selecting the clone area with the Alt + L Click, I then release both and press the  L Click to get the brush.  The + symbol moves along beside the brush.  It does not stick at the area that I alt clicked.  I have reset the tool, but that has no effect.  I have tried the alt-click more than once.  Tha pallet does show an offset and has a clone source chosen.  It just doesn't stick at the location.
    Any help is appreciated.

If I understand you correctly, you may have a system problem (e.g., with OpenGL) if the clone stamp overlay is not confined to the brush shape.
Normally, this is what you see (cloning from the right to the left with a round brush):
If it's not working this way for you, I suggest downloading and installing the latest display driver from the web site of the maker of your video card, and also experimenting with the OpenGL settings in your Edit - Preferences - Performance menu.
CS3 did not offer the clipped Clone Stamp overlay. That's an OpenGL-specific feature, and only Photoshop CS4 and above have the OpenGL support needed.

  • Problems using Photoshop CS3 to calculate pixel areas

Is there a known problem with CS3 Photoshop when using it to calculate how many pixels are contained within selected areas when they are complex shapes?  I am trying to do some calculations and for simple areas it is very good but for other areas it comes up with blatantly incorrect values. For example if you create a matrix of tangent circles within a rectangle and start looking at the areas of the circles and the intervening spaces between the circles and or between the circles and the enclosing rectangle surrounding the edges of the outermost circles, and then start to use the "Histogram" window/panel (I'm using Mac version of CS3 Photoshop) the number of pixels is way off sometimes. I've notice that there is sometimes a warning icon in the Histogram panel that says "Click for Histogram with uncached data" and when that is done then beleivable numbers are shown.
So why would the "cached" data be so far off when doing these sorts of calculations??
Thanks for any suggestion on how to accurately compute areas this way.
    -Bob
ps - I tried to post a version of the file but it's over the 2MB limit - if you want to see the exact file I'm playing with let me know and will be happy to send a copy so you can see what I'm talking about.

    Paolo,
What does "representative sample" really mean?
The funny thing is that for some areas (circles for example) the number in the Histogram was very accurate, but complex shapes were horriblly inaccurate (off by about a factor of 4-5). The complex areas involved combinations of other smaller circular areas, so have trouble understanding why these areas would be so far off compared to circles. None of the areas in question were rectangular, but some sides of the regions did have one or two straight edges along with the circular other edges.
Anyway, glad to read that it's a known issue and there is a way around the problem to get at an accurate number.
Thanks for the suggestion - will keep that in mind for next time I do this.
    -Bob
