  • Soft focus effect

Is there an easy way to add a soft focus effect to enhance portraits? I can't see how to do this in Iphoto. Picasa has a nice filter to do this built in and so I was hoping that Iphoto could do this too.
Alternatively, is there a good plugin for Photoshop to achieve this easily?
    Thanks

Well, silly me, I slide down the sharpness slider and here it is...soft focus!! adjust the exposure and temperature a little bit and I got a professional looking photo!!
although it might not work properly on dark images (especially pictures taken at night)

  • Soft Focus Filter for Wedding Footage

I have perused my filters in FCP but am not finding a nice soft focus for use in wedding videos. Am I missing the obvious or is this another software purchase?
    Thanks!

Try this - I'd be interested to get people's views on it . . .
Copy the clip to the track above (so the top clip is identical to the one below) and use the Gaussian Blur Filter (quite heavily) on the top clip. If you want, you can also lighten the top clip with one of the Colour Correctors - blow the highlights etc if you like.
Then adjust the opacity of the top clip to suit your taste . . . Cool?
Play around with it, then let me know.
The idea is, the original clip's still sharp - but you get that dreamy, hazy look because of the top clip - and it's VERY controllable.

  • Missing smoothcam and soft focus effect

Hi. I recently archived and reinstalled my operating system (leopard). Now when I try to make a quicktime from my timeline, it says, "unable to load softcam and smoothcam effects." Any idea why smoothcam and soft focus disappeared and anyone know how to put them back in? reinstalling final cut is a bad option -- my FC DVDs are at my parents' house (four hours away). I do have a 'previous systems' backup from the archive and reinstall and time machine back-ups...

Check the /Library/Application Support/ProApps/Internal Plug-Ins/FxPlug folder ... if you don't see Filters.bundle and SmootCam.fxplug then you need to grab those files from the previous systems backup.
Gotta say tho', a clean reinstall would be best.

    hi forum....
I'm still waiting for my Version 5 upgrade, and was wondering if there are any cool frame, transition or other effects out there that anyone can recommend? I'm looking for frames for PIP, "flash" for transitioning between vid and jpegs, other cool transitions, etc.

  • Nattress Film Effects for FCP HD

There are so many filters, so many settings. I am converting DV from a Sony 3 chip camera into FCP HD, for home movies using DVD Studio pro. All I want are the simplest settings to get a film look, with proper deinterlacing, and one could spend a lifetime playing with all the filters, and their settings. Can someone please afford me the courtesy as to which filter & settings to use for my project ?? Any and all help is appreciated in advance, thanks,

Do you know if it's worth the $50 extra for the tutorials which only
    come in the box version?
    there is no boxed version
there is only one version sold from either directly nattress.com or authorized resellers
if you are seeing someone offer a "boxed set" please email Graeme and ask him if it is "legit"
as for tutorials there are full documentation included with the plugin as well as you can ask here and Graeme (the developer) hangs out here and will help (as will others)

  • Soft focus in Iphoto '11?

Hello I have a new MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.2 and I downloaded iPhoto '11  (version 9.4.2).
I want to do something that was very easy in older versions of iPhoto: to get a soft focus effect.  I want to get a slight blur, for a soft romantic portrait effect.
The current version of iPhoto has an Sharpness adjustment slider.  But this slider will only increase sharpness.  I want to do the opposite.  I want to decrease the sharpness!
Did Apple actually remove this useful feature from iPhoto?  In no, then where is it?  If yes, then my question is why remove something useful?
    Thanks,
    Peter Halverson
PS:  I must say that the transition from OSX 10.4 (Tiger) to OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) has been very painful.  My most useful software had to be updated or re-purchased and much of it is simply not available.  I wish I could go back to the older OS.

iPhoto 6 was the last verson of iPhoto to offer the Sharpness slider to go both ways, sharpen and soften. It still works with Mt. Lion.  So if you have the disks that came with your original Mac you can use   Pacifist on those disks to install iPhoto 6.  But you'll need a copy of your originla iPhoto 6 library to use or try to follow this  iPhoto Library Manager tutorial:  Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto.
Personally I believe you would be ahead of the curve if you obtained a 3rd party image editor that had the softening capabilty and used it as the external editor from withing iPhoto.

  • Soft focus plug-in

I have Elements 3.0 on a Windows XP computer system. I'm looking to buy a plug-in which gives you a soft focus effect. I been to the Adobe store and cannot find this type of plug-in for 3.0. Does anyone know of a soft focus plug-in for Elements 3.0? Thanks.

You can get the free Dreamy plug-in from Dreamsuite, which works very well. Windows version is here:
    http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?11500000036294
With PE 3 you may find it doesn't work well as a plug-in, but you can also use it as a standalone via the shortcut it puts on your desktop, and that should work fine.

  • Soft focus

As a wedding and event videographer I like to use soft focus in my productions. FCP and FCE does not have a soft focus filter. imovie seems to have more ineresting filters. Even when I downloaded silk and fog filtrs for free the effect is not as nice as imovies. Is there any way to download or apply soft focus in FCE?

I don't know if this fits your needs, but you could try blur filters like Gaussian Blur in Video Filters>Blur

  • Pan & Zoom effect in FCP 6

    Hello everyone,
New to this forum and struggling with FCP to perform zoom and pan effect on scren cast movies.
Can anybody give me som tips and tricks on how you best approach this or recommend a good effect for it?
    Thank You

Sorry Shane, with screencast I mean that I capture with IShowU screen movements with a Mov file as finished product. In my case it is about creating a software tutorial. Once captured I do the editing in FCP and I need to zoom in or pan to certain screen areas to focus on some functionality on the screen.
I have seen the tutorial before and Thank you for pointing it out, but that illustrate only a zoom effect, but I cannot find a way on how you easaly can move the screen from left to right , for example.

  • Soft Focus Images From Canon EOS 1D Mark IIn

I am viewing soft focus issues with my RAW CR2 files coming from the above camera body. I accidentally opened a file in Canon's Digital Photo Professional and it was razor sharp compared to Aperture. A few historical facts. I have had the camera body calibrated to my multiple L lenses several times. I am using the latest firmware for the camera at 1.1.2 and the latest version of the OS at 10.4.10, Aperture 1.5.4, and DPP at 3.0.2. I have used another identical body model with one of my lenses with the same results. I have viewed this issue on several Macs and displays. I have done controlled sample shots using a Digital Imaging Box where the camera is mounted firmly to it with a two second timer to avoid camera shake and controlled lighting with the same results. This all leads me to how Aperture is handling the CR2 file. Now I am talking about viewing only at 100% magnification. There is NO adjustments done at this point which should rule out the RAW processor engine. Like you all I have moved my entire VERY LARGE library and complete workflow to Aperture and now have serious doubts if I can use this awesome application. Has anyone else experienced this? I have tried Apple directly, other forums, other photographers, etc. with no real answer. Since this is my first post, I can not figure out how to attach screen captures so you can clearly see the difference. I can send them via PM if required. All of your help is greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    David

What do you mean sharp "out of the camera?"
This is a RAW file? Note JPEG files will almost always be sharper out of the camera than will RAW files. JPEG files have post-processing (color space applied, sharpening applied) out of camera when RAW files do NOT.
It is very likely you have different settings enabled in DPP and Aperture. With Aperture you can do sharpening in the RAW conversion step, or via edge sharpening... and doing a comparison on "sharpness" before you have applied this really makes no sense.
NO RAW files are sharp out of camera (well, unless they're from a MF digital back) because all DSLRs have an anti-aliasing filter in them which purposely blurs images. This is done to eliminate artifacting and to increase the effective resolution of the camera (because note that a 12 MP digital camera actually only has 6 million green, 3 million blue, and 3 million red sensors). It does not have 12 million RGB capable sensors, which requires some math, etc., in camera.

  • 60d soft focus issues

I've had my 60d 8 months and within the last month or so I've been experiencing soft focus. I've tried different lens so it's not my lens. I have it set on AF and not manual and am still having the less than crisp images being produced. Any suggestions or ideas?
    Thanks

This actually isn't bad... it needs a little TLC in Lightroom but the data is there and it doesn't look very soft (at least in this reduced size).
Here's what the EXIF data tells me (there's more but I'm just pasting the exposure info):
    Camera: Canon EOS 60D
Lens: EF-S10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM Shot at 20 mm
Exposure: Auto bracket exposure, Aperture priority AE, 1/30 sec, f/22, ISO 200, Compensation: +1
I can see you're using aperture priority (good!)
I can see you set the f-stop to f/22 using a 20mm lens.  What I can't see (because the lens doesn't provide the data) is the focused distance.
I can tell you that when using this camera with that lens at 20mm and f/22, the "hyperfocal" distance is a mere 3.12 feet... meaning if you focused to 3.12' then everything from about 1.5' to infinity would be in acceptable focus.
At f/22 you're going to be getting some diffraction issues... mostly these will only be noticeable if you zoom to 100% (e.g. large prints).  But small image sizes wont reveal them.  At 20mm using f/11 the hyperfocal distance becomes 6.17' (I have an app to look this up) and everything from 3' to infinity would be in focus... but with substantially less diffraction (diffraction is based on laws of physics and lens quality has no bearing on it... the math for calculating diffraction assume "perfect" optics.)  Diffraction is related to the wave-nature of light and what happens when you put light through small openings.  Light doesn't technically focus to a single "point"... it focuses to a spot known as an "Airy disk" (named for the astronomer, George Airy, who discovered it.)  It turns out the smaller the aperture size (larger f-stops) the larger the size of this spot.  There comes a point where it's not only larger than a single pixel... it may be larger than several pixels.
ANOTHER issue I notice is that your shutter speed is 1/30th second in this shot.  If you're on a tripod that's probably not a big deal.  But if you are hand-holding the camera... it's tough (though not impossible) to hold the camera stady enough to have no effects of camera motion causing some blur.  Even "mirror slap" vibration can be a problem if a tripod isn't solid or if you've got windy conditions blowing the camera while it's trying to take the shot.
Lightroom will let you apply some sharpening to tighten up the shot.
I messed with this just briefly using Nik Vivezza... brought down the exposure a bit, reduced exposure on the clouds and boosted contrast in clouds to create more contrast.  Reduced exposure on the highlighted area of the hills.  Also applied overall sharpening.  The whole thing actually improves considerably and this is with the reduced resolution JPEG.  You could work wonders on this with the RAW image (btw, if you're shooting landscapes.... always shoot in RAW and let Lightroom deal with the RAW to JPEG conversion.  You'll get MUCH more data and far more adjustment latitude that way.
If you want to have fun with this, post the full size version (preferably RAW if you have it as a RAW) somewhere then (a) provide a link and (b) invite people to try their hand at processing it for you and I think you'll be quite suprised at how good some of the results will be.

  • How to build a plug-in for FCP

I want to build an export plug-in for FCP. It is a little similar to Automatic duck export plug-in. I want to export sequence in my own format.
The version of Final Cut Pro is 6.0.
I downloaded FxPlug SDK, but it is only about video effect, not what i want.
And I didn’t find any other documents about how to build an export plug-in for FCP.
Who has some related documents or can support me on this?
I will pay for the help if i can afford it.

I don't own Automatic Duck so I don't know how that particular application goes about doing this, but the only way I can think of doing it is through a QuickTime Export Component.
