Softphone as teleworker on UC540 easiest/cheapest?

The VPN client built into the SPA525G2 does a great connecting to the remote UC540.  But the user would like to use a softphone on a notebook for travel purposes.
Cisco has IP Communicator.  If someone purchased a UC540, do they also have to purchase licenses for the IP Communicator?  Any idea what the costs would be for basically a single user?
Also, does it have a built-in VPN client?  Or do I have to first establish a VPN connection, and then start the CIPC?  Can I use the VPN client that I installed into the UC540 when I was configuring it?
Are there any other softphones that will work with a UC540?  Bonus points if there are any that have a built-in VPN client.  I'd like to make it as simple as possible for the guy, he can be technology challenged.
Any tips on the fastest/easiest/least expensive path are welcome.

You will need to buy a license, and you will need either CiscoVPN client, or VPN Anyconnect. Cisco does not make sofphhones with a built in VPN.
For prices you can check with your reseller or browse online.

  • Easiest, cheapest way to create a central file server

Can anyone recommend the easiest and cheapest way to create a file server.
I want to share files between four networked Macs.
I don't want to have to use OSX Server as it seem like overkill - I only need to share some files.
Back in OS9 days, I used to use a spare Mac with multiple users set up. But how do I do it in OSX.
Can I just set up the four users onto a Mac and put all the files in the Shared folder? Are there any permissions issues in doing this?
Is there a way to connect directly to the shared folder of one Mac from one of the others?
Is there a way to connect automatically on login?

sharepoints is your answer. It allows you to setup any folder or volume as a sharepoint. it allows you to create users and groups in the same way as the workgroup manger of osx server does.
Can I just set up the four users onto a Mac and put all the files in the Shared folder? Are there any permissions issues in doing this?
    yes there are permissions involved.
have read through a thread whereby I posted a brief explanation of the users and groups relationships in OSX.

  • Easiest/cheapest way to be able to play itunes from my comp to my new ipad?

    Hi, I'm pretty annoyed as I've just received my new ipad 3 and found out I can't sync itunes from my version of Mac on my main computer, the details of which are;
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac6,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache (per processor):
    4 MB
      Memory:
    1 GB
      Bus Speed:
    667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:
    IM61.0093.B07
      SMC Version:
    1.10f2
I suppose it should have been pretty obvious but I don't feel I was warned about this and presumed I could use icloud via the internet or email myself the mp4s or something at the very worse. As this was one of the main reasons I bought the ipad I feel a bit hard done by! So, the only solution seems to be, to upgrade to a later version on my main computer. Could anyone advise me? It seems sensible to upgrade to the very latest version although would I have increase ram size to cope? Is this easy? What would the costs be? Would I still be able to run my existing programmes ok? I am not the most computer literate and am reduced to shouting at my poor mac quite easily...
Many, many thanks if you can help.
    Jo

The system requirements for the iPad, stated on Apple's web page and even on the iPad's box, clearly state the need for Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later so you can run the latest version of iTunes. So I do think you were indeed warned, as much as Apple can warn any potential buyer.
You'll need to get your iMac upgraded to a later version of Mac OS X before you will be able to sync your iPad to it. 10.6 Snow Leopard is right now the best option, and while the Apple Store no longer lists it on their web page, you can probably still buy a copy of you call the Apple Store directly. Other dealers such as Amazon may also still have copies. You will need to confirm that your applications and peripherals will support Mac OS X 10.6 and upgrade as necessary.
    Regards.

  • How can I transfer music files from my ipod touch to my pc without knowing the apple id password associated with the device?

I have recently been given an iPod touch, and I am wanting to transfer the music from the device to my itunes library and/or computer before restoring the iPod to factory settings. What is the easiest & cheapest (preferrably free) way to go about doing this?

That music and anly other media on the iPod does not transfer with the iPod hardware,
Go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all conent and settings to erase the iPod and set up the iPod with our account and your media.
Tunes pourchases are locked to the account and y ohave to know the password to use them/transfer them to the computer

  • HP 2310ei Monitor (DP/DVI-D) to VGA/HDMI laptop

So, I recently bought the HP 2310ei Monitor. It has DisplayPort and DVI-D connections.
Originally I had planned to just use a VGA/DVI adapter, but I didn't realise that there's a difference between DVI-I and DVI-D. Now I'm wondering, whats my best option?
Buy a Vga to DVI-D adapter? Or a Vga to DisplayPort?
Or maybe go with HDMI to DisplayPort?
On the official DisplayPort website I read that there is no efficient way to connect a VGA Laptop to a DisplayPort monitor because of Analog/Digital, whatever that means, but in a different topic on this bord I also read that someone who bought a HDMI to DisplayPort cable couldnt get it working, so I'm kinda at a loss.
    What are my best options?
    This question was solved.

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and/or product number of the computer that is being connected to this monitor.
There isn't a VGA to DVI-D adapter nor a VGA to DisplayPort adapter on the market, however there may be some expensive active convertors. Depending on your exact computer and its video output ports, you may have a few options. Being that you also ask about going from HDMI to DisplayPort, one can assume your computer has an HDMI out. If this is the case... the easiest, cheapest, and way to connect an HDMI output to the HP 2310ei is with an HDMI-to-DVI cable.

  • Which MBP features best for Final Cut?

Hi folks. I need to buy a MacBook Pro that will be used primarily to run Final Cut Pro (and the other FC Studio programs). Can anyone help a fairly tech-unsavvy consumer understand which processing/memory features will have the most impact on FCP performance? For example, if I'm picking and choosing where to spend my money, should I go with the 2.16GHz processor, or would I be better off adding more RAM and/or a faster hard drive instead? What's going to give me the most bang for my buck? Also, which of these would be easiest/cheapest to upgrade myself rather than paying Apple the big bucks for the upgrade? I'm pretty ignorant about how these various hardware components actually impact performance, so any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First, Apple's is obscenely expensive, and you expressly do not void the warranty by adding or replacing system RAM, so you should not hesitate to do it yourself. All you need is a nubmer 0 or 00 Philips-head screwdriver and 10 minutes.
Second, take the recommendations of the users here and avoid Corsair and Patriot memory. The consensus seems to be that Other World Computing (OWC) and Crucial are reliable sources with good prices.
One thing about Crucial: If you use the product locator and answer the questions about manufacturer, model and spec, you'll be led to a more expensive option if you tell it you have a 2.0 GHz or 2.16 GHz model (at least that was the case up through yesterday—these things change rapidly, of course), but there's no reason to pay more for the exact same SO-DIMMs!

  • Youpi Deleted English -- How do I get it back?

So I saw all the blogs about saving space by using Youpi Optimizer to delete unused language packs in Leopard. Only problem is that now all of the menus and popups for all of my software (Safari, iTunes, Growler, etc. . .) are in another language! It appears Youpi deleted the english pack somewhere and I can't find away to fix it.
It's only the menus and popups, none of the language inside the app (say this page in Safari, or the music in iTunes) is messed up.
I checked the international settings in System Preferences and it says english is default.
Finder and System Preferences are not affected. They are still in english.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

No dumb questions, it's all to easy for someone to click on a link and install some dubious junk promising all manner of benefits. Those very actions account for the vast majority of problems reported on this site. That's why it's here.
    Prota-Zha wrote:
... Where would I backup all my info, to an external drive?
Yes, a directly connected external hard disk drive is the fastest, easiest, cheapest, and most reliable backup device.
Apple's Time Capsule is another alternative for anyone too busy, too disorganized, or simply too lazy to periodically connect an external hard disk drive so that Time Machine can run and back up your data.
Time Machine is automatic backup software included in OS X, and is so devastatingly easy to use that its sole control literally consists of an "on/off" switch.
"Backing up" is not strictly necessary, but neither is carrying a spare tire in your car while driving a couple hundred miles through the desert in the summer.
As for your more pressing issue: what to do now. Unfortunately the localization files removed by Youpi cannot be restored without reinstalling all the software it affected. In the case of the Mac's operating system, that is easily accomplished by reinstalling OS X using your original System Install disc as I explained. Following that, run Software Update to bring all system software to the latest release. Any additional apps purchased from the App Store can also be downloaded again at no additional expense.
That leaves any software that you may have obtained from other sources. You will need to locate your original retail discs to reinstall it, or download and install the software again if it was obtained online.
The amount of work and time you are facing depends on the amount of additional software you obtained.

  • Emac to emac file transfer

hi - the screen on my old emac is gone (just a vertical line in the center of the screen). i got a new emac (used). i want to transfer the files from the old one to the new one. have tried using the migration assistant with firewire but it stalls at "waiting for discs to appear". my old emac is user password protected so that before i get a disc image i would have to log in. i'm assuming that is why the migration assistant stalls out. is there any way for me to proceed with this or will i have to take it to a technician and have him pull the hard drive and the files ? - thanks, beaner

Odd; Patrick's suggestion should work to put the
    Mac
with the bad display into Firewire Target Disk
    mode;
even in Migration/Setup Assitant stalls, it should
still be possible to get at the hard drive
    contents.
even if start up is user id log in protected ? -
    thanks, beaner
actually, i just looked at the migration assistant procedures again and it says to hold down the t key until the firewire symbol appears on the old machine. unless the migration assistant overides user id log in protection, i would not be able to see the firewire symbol until i have logged in to an administrator user account even if the screen was working which it is not. unfortunately, the easiest/cheapest way to do this (Mini VGA to Video Adapter) does not work on my emac so i will have to use a mini vga adapter combined with a db15/vga adapter and hope that one of the older monitors i have laying around will accomplish the mirroring and allow me access to the old computer so that i can enable file sharing and make a connection between the two computers. that is unless someone reading this can correct any misconceptions mentioned here or has an easier way of making this happen. - thanks beaner

  • Component in/ TV tuner.

Hi, I have a cable box that I would like to conect to my new iMac. It is capable of s-video out, component out, coax out, and composite out. It also has dvr.
I have several options I am considering. I could either get a TV-tuner for the mac, although I have an old one for windows. It does not need to do DVR, or record. just the basics.
Another option I found is to connect the box to a camcorder, and connect the firewire from the camcorder to the mac.
I also own a slingbox. This would be IDEAL, as I want to get the cablebox out of sight. However, I want to use it with a remote control. Not a wireless keyboard or mouse. Is there a way to do this?
What will be the easiest, cheapest thing for me to do? And is there a way to use a remote w/ the ir reciever for slingbox, instead of front row?

  • Can I use home videos on a DVD?

I recently transferred a couple home videos from VCR to DVD. I would like to make a film on my mac and just wondered if it was possible. If not, could some one let me know an alternative way to do this?
Not exactly sure what your question is here.
If you mean can you extract your own content from a homemade DVD and edit it in iMovie '08, then the answer is yes. Basically it is just a process of converting the the "muxed" MPEG-2 (VOB) files to an editable compression format. Since the content is yours to do with as you please and, if "homemade," is not copy protected, then there are several possible work flows here depending on the quality you wish to achieve/retain, your willingness to possibly invest in additional software, and the specific compression format in which you wish to edit.
    1) The easiest, cheapest, fastest, but most limited way to go would be iSquint. It is a free application which will convert a homemade DVD VOB title set (i.e., a non-zero set of VOB files constituting a DVD movie) to either MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC files which can be edited in iMovie '08. The application is very easy to use and will create useable files in its default "TV" mode but output can usually be improved if you are willing to make some user adjustments to the settings. It's major drawback is limiting you to only two possible outputs for editing.
    2) At the other end of the scale is MPEG Streamclip. This application is also free but would require you to purchase the QT MPEG-2 Playback QT component ($20) from Apple. Its major advantage is that it will allow you to export your VOB files to any iMovie '08 compatible compression format. It also has a number of built-in elementary editing and enhancement options that may make it more difficult to use.
    3) In between, there are a number of other applications that would also work to include HandBrake (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), MPEG2Works (pay-ware and requires the $20 MPEG-2 component), etc. Some are as easy as iSguint but take longer and others are more difficult to use than MPEG Streamclip. So use whichever best suits your needs, work flow, and seems friendliest to you.
    4) Another approach would be to image the DVD content in such a manner that iMovie '08 itself will convert the content to an edit compatible content. Since there are many ways to attempt this and some either no longer work or may be trapped on in the future so they won't work, I personally don't use this approach. But, once again, the choice is yours here.

  • Best way to remotely connect to 10.4 Server

    Hi,
My boss wants to have someone from a different site be able to log onto our server shares in order to work remotely from a different state. The server is currently running 10.4.11 Server. I haven't set up FTP before, but I've found that if you use the "Connect to Server" with the FTP://xxx.xxx.xxx:21 command, you only get Read Only access to the shares...
Is there a better way to do this, or to get the user to have full RW access to the share?
The user will only need to move files back and forth from the server share to her computer... not do anything else (i.e. run apps, change settings, etc). I was thinking that just opening the share would be the easiest/cheapest way for her to work. I'd rather not spend the $$ for another copy of ARD.
    Thanks

I actually found a decent solution (I think). CyberDuck. It'll do FTP, ssh, etc transfers. I tested it out and it is a pretty cool program that allows for customized user permissions and a bunch of other features.
Has anyone used CyberDuck before. How did you like it?

  • Help with DYNEX Model: DX-55L150A11 - 55" 120Hz LCD Television

Is there a Software Update available for this television??  I have trouble when I switch channels on the Cable box (TWC set top box).  The sound disappears and the only way I can get it back is to cycle through the HDMI ports on the Dynex remote or turn off/on the Dynex remote.  Seems like the Dynex TV loses sync for the AUDIO and it only "RESYNCS" when the HDMI ports are cycled.  I cycle through the HDMI ports, because that is the method of connection between the Cable Set-top box and the TV.
Also, the 120 Hz operation is blurry during a football game.  I need to shut off the 120 Hz processing and watch the raw video and it is not blurry.  WHY???
Overall, the TV is operating okay, just wondering if a Software Update would help this TV????

There is currently no software update available for your TV. However, your sound problem is caused by a communication issue between your cable box & TV via the HDMI cable. An easy test is to plug in another source (like a DVD or game consol) to the same HDMI input, with the same cable, problem goes away, it's the cable box / provider issue. The TV does not know what is plugged in, it's just processing the information it receives. TWC boxes (likely Scientific American or Motorola built) have many problems with HDMI communication. The quickest, easiest, cheapest solution as suggested by cmartin is to switch to component cables. Your TV can process full resolution HD through the component inputs eliminating the troublesome HDMI communication line. Cmartin's other issue sounds like an overloaded cable system and his provider should be running additional lines if useage is overwhelming the bandwidth. HDMI has been troublesome since it's creation and with more products coming out of different countries with no communication standard, everything is 'talking a different language' and compounding the problem.
Regarding your 120hz question, using this function without a true 120hz (frames per second) input signal (currently only used by 3D primarily, and a few select BluRay and video games), the TV's processor takes available incoming frames and averages them together to create additional 'false frames' which are added in between (frame 1-2-3 becomes 1-1.5-2-2.5-3-3.5, etc.) often causing a choppy or blurring effect with normal video conditions. It's purpose and only real current benefit is under very fast moving video conditions when the gap between frames may be more evident.

  • Creating Apple TV photo slideshow in Windows/Converting .mov to Apple TV

I have a newly purchased 160 GB Apple TV and am having some difficulty creating a slideshow. Ideally, Apple would offer iPhoto for Windows or I would own a Mac, but neither is currently true.
So, what is the best/easiest/cheapest way to create an iPhoto-esque slideshow in Windows XP? (transitions and audio track)
In my initial attempts to accomplish this task, I have created a slideshow using QuickTime. I opened a music file in QuickTime, then opened an Image Sequence in QuickTime, then copied the image sequence and Added and Scaled to the audio track. Finally, I saved this "slideshow" as a QuickTime movie (.mov). This isn't ideal, because there are no transitions and if the photos aren't all landscape it's troublesome. Nonetheless, I tried to open this QuickTime Movie then use the Export to Apple TV conversion process. Unfortunately, QuickTime basically just freezes when I try this. The progress bar never moves from 0%. Any advice here?
    Thanks.
DIY - AMD 64   Windows XP Pro

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The simplest way to make a slideshow without adobe photo elements is simply to put collections of photos into folders and sync them to the tv. tv will allow you to add transitions and add a soundtrack from any music you also have synced. In the current version of tv the ending of the slideshow is a little abrupt but I'm sure it will improve in future versions.
I can't think why QT won't convert your QT (slideshow) movies, perhaps you can tell us a little about the movie. Open in QT, open the movie info window and post back the info you find there.

    How can I fix?
    1) select View>Toolbars>Style Rendering
is the first icon enabled? That will display screen media
    styles. Other
icons display other media styles and/or toggle off the
    rendering of
styles in design view altogether. It's easy to forget about

Hope that's all it is. The other possibility is that you are

  • PhotoShop CS 3 & CS 4 Upgrade query

    Hi,
I have some legitimate copies of After Effects & Photoshop CS4 - however, I just discovered that they are only upgrades. What is the easiest/cheapest method of acquiring CS 3 licenses?
Here's the background: I work for a TV company in London. The software was never registered as the editors who used it weren't on an online network (to protect the broadcast servers & media). We have moved over to Adobe CC and I have been given the software to sell. I don't have proof of purchase, although I do have all of the serial numbers. We purchased it form a reseller along with other software and hardware. The entire IT department who were employed when we bought it are no longer with the company! It's a perfect storm... I have had a few online chats with Adobe customer support, and whilst helpful, they won't do anything without proof of purchase...
Summary: I need to acquire legitimate licenses for PS & AE CS3 to enable my CS4 upgrades to work - what is the simplest way of achieving this?

If you have any legal version of Photoshop  older then CS4 you can use its serial number when installing your CS4 upgrade.  It is very hard to find legal copies of old version of Photoshop for sale. They were either used to upgrade or un-sold  returned to Adobe. Adobe does not market old versions of Photoshop other then CS6.
Your upgrade need prior version serial number to upgrade.  You stated it was used. That user registered it to use it either online or offline to activate it and needed a prior  version to do so.... CS4 does not run if its not activate after 30 days.  You will need that user to transfer the licence to you. Transfer an Adobe product license
In case you don't know it is possible to do off line Offline Activation
Note.  If you do get your hands on a legal prior version of Photoshop you may not be able to activate your CS4 upgrade  if it was use previously and not deactivated.....
You also stated it was some company's copy of Photoshop in that case there may have been a site multi-seat licence involved.
