Software 1.2.1-Blank "Smart" Playlists?

Thought to try a new thread as there seems to be a lot of -48 issues (which I do not have). For MANY years I have used about 250 "smart" playlists by artist and play count. Every time I sync, any songs by that artist that have been played come off the playlist, until I have gone once through every song. The list is blank and it does NOT get transferred to my Pod. I do the 1.2.1 update and guess what? I now have over 250 playlists listed on my Pod with about 200-210 of them containing... NO SONGS.
Has Apple become SO lame that this is intentional? Am I the ONLY one experiencing this? BTW, I'm, no noob to any of this, so I have gone though a bunch of testing to try and see what's up. Including re-downloading the updater. Full restore. None are helping and I have a Pod that I simply can not use in the way I have always been able to use.
Anyway, my question is if you have a smart playlist that, by it settings, has no songs listed, that show NO songs when selected in iTunes that will actually appear as a blank playlist on a 5.5G Pod?

I thought i'd start a new thread as the old one is
taking way to long to load.
Good plan; the only thing worse than the load time for the old thread was that Apple haven't fixed, or even acknowledged, this problem.
I have found 1.2.1 to be a little better than 1.2 so far. I only get problems when I eject my iPod and reconnect. What I have found works is this (and I think it is effectively Robert Todd2's original solution):
1. Configure iTunes to enable Disk Use on the iPod and to NOT start iTunes when you connect the iPod.
2. Shut down iTunes and eject the iPod
3. Reconnect the iPod, run Disk Utility / Repair Disk. This finds lots of errors.
4. Start iTunes and everything runs just fine. I can change settings, add contents, delete content, click Apply etc.
5. When done, eject the iPod, remove the cable and close iTunes
6. Reconnect the iPod, run Disk Utility / Repair Disk. Again, will find lots of errors.
7. Eject iPod
8. iPod should now work fine.
9. When you want to resync, start again from 3 (you may not find any errors though as you ran a Repair Disk is step 6).
There have been loads of suggested fixes, most of them don't work, and those that do seem to work for a subset, so I offer this solution with no guarantee of success!!

  • Smart Playlists on Zen Vision:M and Creative Media Organizer Software

I come from the iPod world, where, once a playlist is created in iTunes, the playlist is transferred to the iPod, and is automatically updated each time you sync. That's why it's called "smart" playlist.
I can create a smart playlist using the Creative Media Organizer software. It automatically updates the playlist, based on the rules I defined. However, the playlist created on the Media Organizer does NOT get transferred to the Vision:M player! What's the point in that?
I can, of course, copy the smart playlist to the Vision:M manually... but there are two HUGE problems with that...
) The smart playlist becomes a "static" playlist... it does not get updated when you sync -- the music in the playlist never changes (even though the original smart playlist is updated on each sync),
    2) The software recopies the *music* back to the Vision:M each time you create a playlist! This means that it overwrites the music that was there, with the (same) music in the playlist!! This takes FOREVER, if there are a lot of titles in the playlist! This is obviously a brain-dead way of doing things! All the software/Vision:M needs to do, is to copy the actual music files that don't currently exist on the player, and then create a text file that contains the *location* of the music... in other words, an M3U playlist file! One of the (many) issues with doing things the way this software does it, is that each time a track appears in a separate playlist, a duplicate entry for that song appears in the Vision:M's music list! So, if you have 5 playlists, and each one contains "Mozart's 5th", then when you list all the songs on your Vision:M, you'll get 5 copies of "Mozart's 5th" listed! Dumb!
Any way around these problems? Can I have smart playlist that gets transferred to the player so that it contains only the songs I want? Does it *have* to recopy ALL the songs to the player, each time I create a playlist? Does it *have* to add duplicate entries to the list of files on my Vision:M?
Is the software *really* as dumb as I think it is, or am I just being a BDU (Brain Dead User)?

You can only automatically sync playlists using Windows Media Player 0 as far as I know. There's lots of other software out there that can use the Media Transfer Protocol of the Vision:M, but I'm not sure what they can do.
Creative's software is desperately lacking in the playlist sync area, so you're not being a BDU

  • Smart playlist to popualate if a field is blank - How??

Hey folks I am needing a playlist to populate, given that the comments field is blank and Im struggling to work out how to do it?
Ive been making smart playlists to meet different criterias for a while now but this one im struggling on!

Hmm, works fine for me, though I've learnt not to expect iTunes to be completely consistent between Mac and Windows.

  • Smart Playlist name (title) becomes blank occasionally

I have noticed that, on occasion, one particular Smart playlist (that I listen to the most) will suddenly have the name go blank. The playlist is still there on my iPod & in my iTunes, all the songs are still there, but the name is blank. I've checked the iTunes XML file and it is blank in the <string/> tag.
For completeness, the name of the Smart Playlist is "Random & Excluded" and the conditions are that (a) no songs played within the past 7 days and (b) My Rating is not one star. Checked "Match ALL conditions" and "Live Updating"
The only solution I've found is to delete the playlist and create a new one.
Has anyone else had a similar issue?
    iTunes v. 6.0 (17)
    iPod 20GB generation 4 (I think)

Me Too! I see no way to rename a playlist. The obvious thing would be Get Info on the playlist, but that just displays the playist filter dialog. Sounds like a bug to me...

  • My smart playlist is blank

Some of the smart playlists seem to go blank on my iphone.
    I have an iphone 4s,
I've chosen the criteria for the smart play list as "Date modified is in the last 6 months"
I've noticed that choosing the "date modified" criteria makes it go blank. But when I use some other criteria it works fine...
    How do i fix this?
The playlists appear to be working fine on itunes on my mac.

Thanks for the reply all and I will update you as to how I go with Genre podcast. I can confirm i was listening to the podcasts all the way through - as I understood that partly played podcasts werent marked as played. Thus from my point of view doing everything right so will see if the genre podcast works. All I would say if apple are reading this newsgroup is that from a user perspective this function isnt working well and I think a remove podcast after it has been listened to is a core function and shouldnt be a difficult thing to add on via a smart play list.
    Thanks

  • Software Updates  have mistakes, Smart Playlist and Calendar

I upgraded the iTunes (v7.0.0.70) and iPod nano (v1.2) Operating System last week and found several mistakes:
1- When I select a Smart Playlist of my Podcasts, only one plays and stops eventhough I have 10+ podcasts in the same playlist.
2- When I pause and sleep the podcast, when starting up again, the resume makes the podcast play at FAST Speed
3- My Calendar from Outlook does not synch into the Nano
Is there an update that correct these mistakes?

It is a problen with my nano, not the itunes or the PC. Only plays one podcast in my smart playlist (Say I have it programmed to play "News"), but not in the music Smart Playlist where it plays the all.
    Please help. Thanks,

  • 3.1.3 Software Update and Smart Playlists with Podcasts

I did the 3.1.3 update last night and now my smart playlist containing podcasts is gone.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
    Any idea on a fix?
    Thanks

For whatever it's worth, 3.1.3 appears to have fixed my problems with Smart Playlists...
In 3.1 and 3.1.2 I'd get the same contents of a Smart Playlist between iTunes and the iPhone, but a very different order.
e.g. I have my Podcasts smart playlist set to order by ascending publish date. A bit annoying because I wouldn't get them played back in chronological order on the iPhone, but only an annoyance.
Now since applying 3.1.3 - with no mods to filters or Live Updating I might add - they've back to showing the right order on the iPhone as well as on iTunes. Which is a relief. Long may it continue!
PS: I did also update iTunes to 9.0.3... I don't suppose this would help those on the list having troubles would it?

  • Smart Playlist - Ratings fields are blank and crashing iTunes

My iTunes has recently developed this problem where if I open a Smart Playlist and select "Ratings", the Ratings field is completely white.  There are no stars or greyed out stars.  If I try to click in that field, it crashes iTunes.   Upon reopening iTunes, it runs a "Checking iTunes Library..." function but it still doesn't work correctly.   This is happening for existing and newly created Smart Playlist.
All song rating appear normally within the normal browsing window.
Has anyone seen this?  Anyone know of a fix?
    Thanks

After troubleshooting this by throwing away iTunes preferences, restoring previous iTunes libraries from Time Machine, reinstalling 10.6.7 Combo and iTunes, reimaging the computer from scratch, the root of the cause finally appeared.
After reimaging the computer and running disk diagnostics, the hard disk was failing at times.  I then determined that the hard drive had to be replaced but I wasn't sure if this would fix my iTunes smart playlist ratings problem.
I bought a new 500 gb drive to replace the original 120 gb drive, which was 4.5 years old.
After restoring from Time Machine and booting up into my main account, my iTunes smart playlist finally started working.  I'm guessing that because I have an enormous iTunes library, something about pulling the data was straining the computer.  That doesn't seem right though because creating/editing a smart playlist should just be a regular window without any labor intensive hd actions until you close it.

  • ITunes 6.0.1.3 smart playlist and rating problem

I noticed my iPod playlists don't update live anymore, so I checked their settings in iTunes and found that, for some reason, there are no stars listed in the smart playlist.
I deleted them all and tried to start fresh. I click File > New Smart Playlist. In the first combo box I choose "My Rating", in the second combo box I choose "is", and in the third field, I can't do anything--not even click to set a rating. It's just blank.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Okay, apparently the stars are still there, I just can't see them. If I click where the 5th star should be, then it adds songs rated with 5 stars.
I do see the stars in the regular library listing. Why can't I see them in the smart playlist?
This doesn't explain why my iPod doesn't do live updating anymore. Hmm.

  • How do I get my old playlists back?  I seem to have only a bunch of "Smart Playlists" which is kind of stupid because the stuff that itunes populated them with don't even meet the crteria of the list! But that's another story.

Against my better judgement, I updated my Itunes software when I got my wife a new Iphone.  Problem is, instead of my old playlists, I can only view a few "Smart Playlists".  In addition, what songs are in them include a bunch of my daughter's music, which isn't even stored in this computer.  So it would seem that somehow my itunes is screwed up somehow.  Does anybody know how to get rid of this "Smart Playlist" crap and get me in touch with my old library and playlists?

    See this post.

  • IPhone 4 Fails to Start Sync Wifi, Smart Playlists Won't Sync Wifi or Wired, and Missing Artwork iTunes Screensaver

    Hi all,
I recently deleted a few gigs worth of photos off my iPhone 4.  Ever since I've been having trouble with a few things.  All software is up to date.  So far here are the things I've noticed that seem suspicious.
iPhone fails to start sync using wifi.  It times out on Step 1 (starting sync) or Step 2 (backup).  I've tried closing and reopening iTunes, restarting the MBP and iPhone, and deleting my iPhone backup.  In some cases iTunes loses the connection to phone and won't come back.  It syncs fine using a USB cable, but won't get past step 2 using wifi.  I hate wires so I would prefer to do this over the air.
My smart playlists no longer sync.  I've tried unchecking the boxes and selecting them again, but nothing.  Duplicating an exisitng smart playlist and selecting it to sync seems to have worked for now, but I'm concerned about now being able to add my original playlist.  Sounds like a larger issue to me.
My iTunes screensaver on my MBP no longer displays artwork.  It says there is no artwork to display, but iTunes still has artwork in it.
I've read numerous threads about all these issues.  I know there are many people out there having these problems.  I just haven't found a good solution for any of them.  Everything was working beautifully until I tried to clean up some old stuff on my phone.  Apple is playing dumb according to the people that have contacted them.
    I'm running:
    OSX Lion 10.7.4
    iTunes 10.6.3
    iOS 5.1.1
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Just nudging this one back to the top in case anyone has some input.

  • Why are my Smart Playlists so completely out of sync?

I created a smart playlist on my iTunes 10.6 that populates the list with randomly selected tunes that do not contain specific genres nor were played in the last 90 days to fill 3 hours. The songs that populate the list seem to meet those criteria. However, the songs that populate the list on my iPhone look nothing like the list on iTunes and includes songs I listened to yesterday even though I synced last night and this morning.
    Any suggestions?

I've seen the similar behavior thing: songs that were supposed to be excluded because of playcount rules being included anyway on my iPhone. The playlist works fine on iTunes. I believe that the fact that the songs aren't matching is by design with randomly selected playlists, as it avoids complicated syncing issues between devices. However, the fact that songs are included which shouldn't be is simply a bug.
Smart playlists have ALWAYS been brain-damaged on iPods/iPhones/iPads in my experience; lots of bugs that don't go away on even major software updates, and when they do go away they are replaced by brand new bugs, often as not worse than the old bugs. So, I wouldn't get my hopes up. I think Apple's team for dealing with smart playlists on post-PC devices consists of three brain-damaged chimpanzees, recently reduced from the old team, which consisted of four brain-damaged chimpanzees plus a lemur.
In short, smart playlist issues are getting close to celebrating their tenth birthday. Hoping that they will get fixed only leads to madness.

  • Smart Playlist is not syncing onto my iPod

I have a smart playlist of recently added songs on my iTunes. I just got the 3.0 software for my iPod touch and now my recently added playlist is not showing up as the songs that are on my iTunes. The songs that are supposed to be in that playlist are correct on the iTunes, but are totally different songs on my iPod after I've synced it. I've tried restarting my iPod, restoring it and I've made a new smart playlist for my new songs and it still comes up as the same set of different songs as before on my iPod. How can I fix this playlist to have to right songs in it on my iPod?

im in the same situation.. i recently switched over to the 3.1.3 version and what a mistake that was. i wish we could go back because half the things dont work anymore. like the smart playlists... it says i have them correct on both itunes and my ipod but i check it ON my ipod and its random songs...

  • 1st Generation iPod Touch & Smart Playlists

My 1st Generation iPod Touch will not sync my Smart Playlists. After syncing, the Playlists appear under my iPod touch in the iTunes 11 sidebar. On my iPod Touch all songs/tracks for the playlists load into the iPod's library and can be accessed. Playlist names however either do not appear on the iPod or the ones that do appear may be empty. I've used these same Playlists for many years and have only recently started seeing this. I have done a full restore of my iPod Touch, the OS software is up to date and I've tried creating new Playlists with the same results. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Smart Playlists no longer working on my 4G iPod

I have a 20GB 4G Mono iPod that is running the latest firmware version (3.1.1) and I have several Smart Playlists I use frequently with it.
Before I upgraded to iTunes 7 last week these playlists would dynamically update on the iPod itself without the need for me to synchronize with iTunes (this was also a bug introduced in firmware 3.1 and corrected in 3.1.1). Now the "smart" playlists on the iPod act just like static playlists: if I play a song that is supposed to be removed from the playlist once the song finishes, it doesn't until I sync with iTunes.
Is anybody else experiencing this issue?
I have tried restoring my iPod just in case.

Well, 7.0.1 doesn't fix this for me, but downgrading to 6.0.5 did. I followed the first four steps here:
    http://macslash.org/comments.pl?sid=6335&cid=112858
Then, while keeping the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file in ~/Music/iTunes, I made a new "iTunes Library" file (instructions at the bottom of this link):
    http://www.mani.de/en/software/macosx/ivolume/faq.html
Then installed 6.0.5 and dragged the xml file onto the new program file to import. The new groupings (movies, podcasts, etc.) turn into playlists at the bottom, but can be easily deleted.
This will allow downgrade while keeping play count, ratings, etc. intact; I did lose artwork for all the songs for which I had downloaded the art from iTunes store, and iTunes is recopying those songs to the iPod, but I'd rather have the playlists update on the iPod than have the artwork.
