Software advice

I am currently using LR2 on a windows Vista system. I would like to upgrade systems. I will probably be purchasing an IMac this week, but I am unsure of what software to get with it? I am interested in trying some HDR effects, and was just reading that the new CS5 has tone mapping capabilities. My first plan was to convert my LR2 to the new system and then add Photo matrix pro plugin and get a tone mapping program, but dont know if it could be used in LR or had to be exported to photoshop? After reading about the new features in CS5 would I be better of just buying it instead? Will it have HDR capabilities built in, or would I have to purchase it seperately? I have tried to do research on this myself, but unfortunately have only been able to learn enough to be dangerous ! LOL !
Thanks for any advice.

In the for what it's worth catagory, if you intend to manipulate your images beyond exposure, color, white balance, sharpness, etc. (i.e., you need to remove unwanted objects or add others, or seriously change parts of the image) you will need one of the PS programs (either full or Elements). LR can remove some spots but won't do the rest. If you only want HDR beyond the LR usual, the plug-in could save you some money. As with a number of participants in this forum, I use LR for 90% of my development needs, but the other 10% can only be done in PS (or PS-like app). If you find yourself in this catagory at some time in the future the cost of an HDR plug-in now may not be well spent.

  • HP MediaSmart DVD - Need to Update Bluray Software - Advice??

    Hi Guys,
    So has there been any update to this issue after all these months? I recently bought an HP Pavillion Slimline 5500t and when I first got the system about a month ago the Blu Ray player worked although not very well. It skipped and stuttered and had some pixelization issues with a few Bluray Discs. Seems to play non-Bluray fine. Then I got Avatar this past Friday and put the disc in the computer - played fine for about 40 mins - maybe an occasional stutter but nothing I couldn't tolerate. I made no system changes at all and last night (sunday night, two days later) when I insert the same exact bluray disc (Avatar) I get a red screen that says "Your Bluray Software needs to be updated, please contact your manufacturer."
    I call tech support and after 3hrs of doing updates and other stuff I am in the exact same situation as I was before. Only now they tell me they want to do a system recovery back to the day I got the PC which will wipe out all my data and configuration settings. I told them no way. Everything is working perfectly EXCEPT the HP Media Smart DVD software. So why would I blow out my entire system and all the programs I've downloaded.
    So I'm now stuck. I like others have said do not want to pay $89.95 for Cyberlink's PowerDVD after I already paid $1200 for this computer with all the upgraded goodies to be able to play BluRay. Very disappointed in HP for not fixing this issue properly. Any advice?
    Thanks, Dan
    HP Pavillion Slimeline - S5580t - Windows 7

    Also reposting another post I left on another thread with more info of my situation:
    "But for real. I was trying to explain this issue to my girlfriend last night and she was like, "but my crappy old DVD player has never had an issue playing any DVD I put in it, so why would your $1200 computer have a problem?"
    And there we are. I totally agree with her. It is complete BS. Not to mention I took the other poster's advice and downloaded Slysoft and whala...perfect picture quality, no encryption or "need to update your software" errors at all.
    So this is 100% a licensing / copyright update issue and HP / Cyberlink are just behind the curve. What I can't understand is how can Netflix and others be sending out discs that don't work in people's stand alone Bluray players?? And if they do in fact work in the stand alone players then why in the hell would they NOT work in a high speed / media center spec built always online always connected computer which could download new codecs/updates every single day if it required to do so??
    I don't get it. I'm gonna complain to HP today because this is 100% a licensing issue. And to think they almost had me roll back my whole **bleep** computer and delete all my files and settings. All I had to do was a 10sec download and everything works perfectly. But I don't want to pay for Slysoft...its F-ing expensive. I'm pissed."

  • Book & software advice for creating a program that would utilize USB.....

    Hey All,
    I've been a mac user for about two years now and have become more and more impressed by the stability offered by Unix.
    However, I still live in both worlds (XP and OSX) and my programming roots are windows based (sorry ).
    Here's the problem:
    I'm trying to determine which direction I should head for writing a program that gives me access to the USB ports on a Mac, and allows me to correlate it to a web atmosphere.
    My thoughts are: I'd have a device attached to a USB port (or multiple), and I'd use a system (OSX) USB driver to write to a database, in turn - use dreamweaver to build a WEB that interfaced with this database.
    I'm not sure what software I should use to write an app that can talk to my USB ports, as well as load them into a chosen database. I think once I have the data collected into a database, I can handle the WEB side of this, but I want to take this one step at a time.
    I installed Xcode and I was ready to take off when I said - "wait a minute, this isn't exactly visual studio." [even though it's somewhat similar]
    My programming background is in C++, VB and ASP (with VB script & Java Script) but I haven't written for about 3 years (hence the ASP and not ASP.net) - So feel free to steer me in the right direction or just give me a general verbal tirade and tell me I'm in over my head! LOL
    I've bounced all over these message boards, and see everything from opinions on Java, C, C++, even Python (which I never heard of until a post yesterday: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=133836&tstart=0)
    I'm asking for some advice on what books would be a good aid for me to purchase in order to help me achieve what I'm trying to do. I stopped in at my local Border's bookstore the other night, and there was quite an array to choose from.
    So here is what I almost picked up for a starter:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764584111/103-2161547-3122203?v=glance&n=28315 5&n=507846&s=books&v=glance
    Any suggestions?
    Another major thought in my mind is the transition to little endian, which is what Intel uses (vs OSX big endian). Obviously, I don't want to get burned by this if I flip the wrong bit after the architecture changes....
    I realize I may have really 'broad brushed' this, but I really wanted to hear everyone's thoughts since there may be other 'projects' I attempt to tackle on OSX.
    Your suggestions on any books, sites, software, etc will be greatly appreciated......
    Thanks for reading,
    Steve

  • Project management software advice

    Hello - I work for a small company - half Mac users and half PC - and we need to get project management software which is compatible with MS Project - any advice please? Cheers Simon

    simonfromswansea wrote:

    Try
    Merlin
    <http://projectwizards.net/en/merlin/>
    You can also try
    Open Project
    <http://sourceforge.net/projects/openproj/>
    but I don't know if it's still in active development. OmniPlan can import MS Project files, but I don't know if that's practical for your needs.
    In a Mac/Win environment, the only practical solution may be to run MS Project in a virtual machine like Parallels or Fusion, or perhaps virtualised with CrossOver.

  • Level 5 RAID Corrupted Config, Need Software Advice.

    Hello,
    Please excuse the fact that this is not a question about an Xserve RAID.
    I have a level 5 RAID, the config table on the controller card has become corrupted. Can anyone here offer any advice on software I could use to rebuild the config and recover the data?
    It doesn't matter if it is Windows software, I would prefer software that I can run on my Mac but I am willing to try anything as long as it can handle a HFS+ Level 5 RAID.
    Again sorry for posting this question here, but I am desperate, and need advice from other Mac users.
    Thanks,
    Anil.

    If it's not XServe RAID then I don't think anyone here can offer any advice other tan very generic "talk to the manufacturer".
    Each vendor's RAID 5 implementation is going to be a little different. Without knowing how they format or layout the disks there is zero chance of recovering the data directly off the disks. That said, even if it WAS an XServe RAID, the same issues would apply - you can't read the disks directly to get the data.
    The vendor might be able to provide some clues. It might be possible to swap the drives into another identical chassis, the controller might be field-replaceable, or a professional data recovery company might be able to help ($$$$). But, as I said, these are options that are independent of the vendor.

  • Upgrading Memory/HD/Software - Advice Please

    Hello.
    I have an original MacBook Pro 15" 1.83GHz, 80GB Hard Drive, Mac OS X 10.4.11 and two 512MB RAM
    My Hard Drive is virtually full and I already use external storage for backup and large video and media content. I want to expand my internal Hard drive and whilst I'm at it, it seems wise to increase the memory and then upgrade my operating system.
    Can someone please offer any advice as to
    a) what i might be able to buy myself in terms of hardware
    b) how then I get it fitted/who could do it for me in London and
    c) How i then transfer content, software onto new drive, many thanks
    Look for to any help, in layman's terms. Thanks

    You can get up to a 500 GB drive, and your maximum RAM is 2 GB (you'd replace the 2 x 512 MB sticks with 2 x 1 GB sticks). An AASP can swap the HDD (and the RAM, too). Here's how to find one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
    Most will perform the data transfer for you - they'll clone your current internal drive onto the new drive in an external enclosure, boot from the new drive to make sure it works, then physically swap the drives.
    If they don't do the transfer, clone your current drive onto an external drive (using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner), test the clone by booting from the external (connect it, boot with the option key held, select the external drive), then when you get your computer back, boot it from the external clone and use the same software to clone the system back to the new internal drive.

  • I need audio editing and cd making software advice.

    I have been using Toast 8 to edit audio tracks and make cds and have reviewed Toast 9. This software has a lot of stuff I never use and excludes some valuable features like pitch shifting. Does anyone know of a stand alone audio software that includes a good pitch and tempo shifter, a normalizer that actually works and saves audio tracks until you make your cd? What I am really looking for is a program that is audio only and very good. I have reviewed Sound Studio but am reluctant to try it because reviewers say its pitch shifter is poor. I need some advice.

    I would recommend at least downloading the trial version of Sound Studio and trying it out. I work for Freeverse (the publishers of Sound Studio). I asked around, and there have not been any complaints about the pitch adjuster in the latest version 3.5.5, AFAIK. You can adjust the pitch and tempo independently.
    The trial version is fully functional, and is only limited by the number of times you can launch the program (10 times).
    www.freeverse.com/soundstudio
    If you do try it out, I'd love to hear what you think of it.

    At the risk of creating another never ending post:-
    Do you mean screen grapper software  - or screen video capture software??
    I have been searching for months for screen video capture software. It's perfectly legal if done sensibly.
    You can view streaming video, from approved websites, but you can't record it, unless you can download from a Freeview Video Tuner, which in my case is not always possible.
    Microsoft did have screen video capture software for Windows XP, but there's nothing that works for Windows 7.....
    Even the Windows 7 Pro demo (limited) version does not work for me.

  • Financial Software advice

    Hi. I'm a graphic design freelancer and I need to purchase some sort of financial software for the mac. I need to create invoices, track charges, and even track my personal charges as well. Can anyone recommend the best software? I know quickbooks is available, but I'm not sure how great this program is. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

    skottish wrote:That was actually my first thought, but my thread is intentionally a little vague. I'm not the one who needs the budgeting software and she's the Anti-Nerd!!!! I'm curious: did you do it from scratch or did you work off a tutorial of some sort?
    I made it up from scratch, it isn't anything fancy though.  Here is a quick explanation of what it is:
    I have a sheet for each account with 5 columns: "Date of Transaction", "Transaction amount", "Running total", "Transaction Type" and "Comment", so I get something like "16/07/2006, -£20, [running total here], ATM Withdrawl, Tesco cash machine"
    I then have a sheet that gives me the current balance for each account, and then adds the current accounts (I have two), adds the savings accounts (I have two also), and subtracts the credit card balances, and gives me a final grand total.
    The final sheet is a chart, and what I do is every Monday, I enter the current balance of each account.  This way, I can see where my money is going on a weekly basis (weekly is enough for me) and I can see if I'm spending too much
    Hope that is of some help, I would show you it but I don't really wanna send my bank balances around

  • Best way to develop billing software - advice me

    Hi,
    I am junior software developer. I am thinking to write a open source billing software witch can be used from ISPs and web hosting companies. I want to ask you what is the best approach for that goal.
    1. I am thinking to use a server witch will sit between the router and servers with web content. That server will be installed with squid proxy and rules of iptables.
    2. I will write a java program witch will listen on port for example 1001 and will listening for string from PHP program what will be hosted on the same or another server on the internet and will write those strings in squid's black list and will send to the system squid -k reconfigure to read squid it's settings. So when user's period for using the servers resources expire for non paying squid will block the access to that server and the web users won't be able to open the pages.
    Is there more efficient way to realize my idea?
    How the PHP program will send to the java program strings containing the banned IP's
    If you had to design a billing software how you will do it?

    Not. Your spyware will not get active cooperation from anyone.

  • Web Portfolio Software Advice (off topic)

    hi all.
    i have been really happy with my ability to organize a very large amount of images in Aperture and to publish them easily to Flickr (among other things).
    this has now freed me up to focus on creating a new website for an old website that needs updating. right now i have just created a /link/ for the pictures on the webpages which takes the viewer to the flickr albums.
    i am looking at "themes" such as the WordPress Photography theme (http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/photography/) and i am also looking at sites that are using the "autoviewer" or "autoviewer pro" software.
    http://www.iloveconcrete.net/drive1/drive1.html
    http://www.simpleviewer.net/autoviewer/
    anyway, i am familiar with using wordpress UI but i am desperately trying to find a method where i don't have to use the wordpress image uploader. i guess the holy grail would be to just "publish" album "code" out of Aperture that i would then embed into a WP theme website which i am sure i could create in a week or something.
    anyway, does anyone know of anywhere i can ask such questions or get some leads on keeping this workflow simple but create a nice website at the same time?
    TIA and apologies for the off-topic post.

    I liked "Waves" and thought most of the sounds were good- the piano was very realistic to my casual listen. I did however find the backing strings of the first couple of minutes to be fairly "synth" sounding, maybe that's what you wanted, but to me it could have sounded more like an actual string ensemble. Later on it seemed to be working more to my liking with the strings playing individually.
    It's not the most expensive thing out there, but I have been using IK Multimedia's Philharmonik, which is not good for a lot of things, but it does really capture a real "woody" and "dry" sound on the cellos, violas, etc.
    I also tend to agree that MySpace could be a good addition for you. And I notice that your vox on the podcast was only coming at me from the left.
    Keep it up! It's a lot of fun to do- I'll send you a thing I wrote with Philharmonik and Sibelius 5, it's sort of just me learning those and not really finished, still, you'll get an idea of what Philharmonik sounds like.

  • Graphic Design Software Advice

    I have an IMAC G5 with the 'as it came out of the box' software. I am looking to do some T-Shirt designs and so was after a piece of software to assist. Nothing spectacular, just images and text and so I'm hoping not to spend too much money. I am new to Apple and so don't know too much about the software. Is there something already installed on the box that I could use or can someone recommend a simple (cheap of free) piece of software?

    Even though you won't be doing the printing, it's a good idea to print the seps. before sending the file off to a printer to make sure everything is separating correctly. Unfortunately, after taking a closer look at Intaglio that I mentioned above, it doesn't look like it will print seps. And it doesn't support Pantone spot colors. So it's probably not going to work for you. Strangdogs is correct - you probably won't find a vector program or any program that does what you want it to do without spending more money than you want to spend.
    I use the Adobe CS apps at work on a G5 and also Illustrator 8 via Classic. At home, I use Illustrator 8 via Classic without problems all the time. If you check ebay, you may be able to find a cheap copy of Illustrator 8. We got 2 copies at work that way for under $80 a piece. Just make sure the person you buy it from transfers the license to you. There is a license transfer form they need to fill out.

  • Software advice to stay on task every day - one that has todo check boxes

    first: pl let me know if this is not the right forum.
    Two:
    here is what i would like to do.
    have my dashboard launched every hour or so after there has been two minutes of inactivity. in my dashboard, i would like to see important information, such as a quick glance at today's calendar, weather, stock, news etc.
    i think i should be able to do this using either cron or using a GUI application for that (i am forgetting its name).
    but i am no pro. and therefore do not know what exactly i might need to do.
    any advice?

    actually I don't quite see how to do exactly that.
    The following will be somewhat close.
    copy the following to a *plain text* file (say in TextEdit)
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    #!/bin/bash
    idl=$"`ioreg -c IOHIDSystem | awk '/HIDIdleTime/ {print int($NF/1000000000); exit}'`"
    if [ $idl -gt 120 ]; then
    open /Applications/Dashboard.app
    fi</pre>
    save it as a file with .sh extension somewhere. make the file unix executable.
    to do this run the following in terminal
    chmod +x /path/to/file
    put the unix path to the file in the command. Now use Lingon (I see you know about it) to make a launch daemon that will run every hour and execute the above script.
    The script checks if the idle time is bigger than 120 seconds and if it is it opens dashboard. You can ask in the unix forum (it's under OS X technologies) how to do exactly what you want. people there are a lot more knowledgeable about these things than me.

  • I need software advice.

    Well i have a imac 10.2.8 in my room. I have itunes 6 and i know i have usb 1.1 i think, but i dont care as long as it works. BUT my brother downstairs has a MAC G5. With usb 2. but the thing is. Your talking about software updates, Does itunes 6 suport all of them? Are the updates up to date with itunes 6, even tho i have a 10.2.8?

    You don't state what iMac you have; iMac, iMac G4 or iMac G5. If I remember correctly, there was an iMac G4 with USB 2. To find out what version of USB you have click Apple, About this Mac, System Profiler, and go to USB.
    Your iPod will work with USB 1.1. It will just take longer to transfer you music across.
    iTunes 6 works with 10.2.8 and later.
    Hope this helps.
