Software and itunes from PB to MBP

I just purchased a new MBP, arrives next week, and need to transfer software and data from my PowerBook G3 firewire OS X 10.2.8 that is almost dead. I may be able to transfer data with a firewire connection or have to pull the HD and use it in an enclosure like an external HD. Either way will I have trouble with my itunes account? Also, will microsoft Office 2001, and an old version of Palm desktop be supported on the MBP, or do I need new versions as I have with Adobe CS3? Any other suggestions with transfering I should know? Thanks.

If you restore everything, it will be fine, however if you simply drag and drop old files, programs, etc. over then you might have problems with the iTunes account and library.
As long as you copy the iTunes library over to the proper location and sign into your account, everything should be fine in iTunes.
As for Office 2001 and your Palm desktop software. They will run, but will not be universal binaries (so they won't run as efficiently). Since you updated to CS3, it seems that you want universal binaries, which will be a problem with Office (and probably the Palm software) at this time. The next version of Office will be universal binary, but has not yet come out.
But keep in mind, you don't need to have universal binaries, the program will just run faster.

    Have allowed pop-ups.
    Have flushed the DNS. Nothing.
Still can't access the store. Please help!

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 n above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

  • How can I transfer music and iTunes from my mac to my iPhone?

I have a macbook air and need to transfer some of my music and itunes from my mac to my newly updates iphone4. Previously I used to drag what I wanted from my itunes to my phone but now it doesn't work. Any ideas?

First step, of course, is to plug your iPhone into your Macbooks Air. Then, you need to set up syncing how you want it in iTunes (on the MBA). If you want to be able to drag and drop music, select "manually manage music" on the Summary pane in iTunes.

  • Manually migrating iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion..

    Hi all,
I received a shiny new iMac yesterday and in my haste to get it up and running, I began to run the migration assistant on wi-fi.  Unfortunately, my 2006 macbook model is so old that my firewire cables don't actually fit the firewire port on the back of the iMac!!
11 hours later, there was still 40 hours left to go.  At this point I manually quit the migration assistant. Partly because I have to work and to work I need to use a computer and partly because I realised that I don't want all the old crud from my previous system.. all I want is my iTunes (songs, apps, playlists etc) and my iPhoto to migrate.
The original admin account that the migration assistant was going to replace was still there.  Everything seems to be working fine... I did a quick repair of disk permissions and all seems fine.   So, I think I flirted with danger by quiting the migration assistant, but danger doesn't seem to have flirted back.
I've searched high and low on the web and I can't find any advice on migrating just your iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion.  I did read a post somewhere (relating to a migration to Leopard) where someone wrote that, for iPhoto, you simply had to replace your iPhoto Library in your pictures folder on the destination machine and then simply start iPhoto.  iPhoto would upgrade the databases etc and all would be fine in the world.  I cannot find a post online that suggests that this is also the case for Lion.
Can anyone here give me some hints on how to manually migrate the iPhoto and iTunes libraries over (and still preserve playlists in iTunes, albums/events in iPhoto etc)?
I figure that I cannot be the only person in the world who wants a "fresh start" on their machine, with the exception of iPhoto and iTunes.

Resident apple gurus at work have advised me to use the migration assistant and plug an ethernet cable between machines.
I'll give this a go and then go through the process of removing and cleaning up whatever old data I can.. but if someone posts a response to this question for me, I'll happily roll back in time-machine and go again in a cleaner way. :-)

Unplug any peripherals you have except your keyboard, reboot, and check activity monitor for apps.  Keep running apps to a minimum to find the App causing the issue.

  • NEED HELP GETTING NEW SOFTWARE AND ITUNES

Hello. I recently updated my iphone 4s to the most recent update. I don't know what it's called, sorry. Anyways, once I did this, my iphone was no longer recognized by itunes. It was recognized by my computer, however. Because of this I tried to download the newest itunes. It told me that I couldn't without 10.8.6 software. I did the "software update" on my computer and it did nothing. I then went onto the internet (apple) and tried to download 10.8.6. It said that I could not without 10.6. software? Anyways, I have been doing all that I can to get any sort of update but I'm not allowed to get anything since I lack 10.8.6 software. I trashed my old itunes as it was apart of the process of getting (what would be the new itunes) to recognize my phone. Now, I can't get itunes or any sort of software and I'm incredibly frustrated. I'm stuck and have no idea what to do or where to start. MY laptop is a macbook pro from 2009. (I am not tech savy and thus need basic explanations) I don't even know the software that I am currently running but please help. I am extremely frustrated as my music (which is one of the few things I use this computer for) is completely gone. HELP. Thank you so much

  • TRANSFER ITUNES FROM G5 TO MBP

I'm just getting delivery of my new MBP sometime today. I want to transfer ALL my iTunes from my 5G to MBP (about 8000+songs & videos). I will also be using 2 250GB LaCie HDs as well. I assume what I've read that it can be done using Firewire. I've never used FW before to transfer anything. I just want to duplicate everything from my G5 to MBP. Anything I should know before I start so I don't get into a "can of worms"?.

Deauthorizing will prevent the computer from taking up one of the 5 computers that your iTunes Music Store account can handle.
Only 5 computers at a time can be allowed to play music/video you bought from the Music Store. So if you have your G5 authorized, you only have 4 computers left. And then 3 with your new MBP. But if you deauthorize the G5 you still have 4 left. Its in the Advanced menu.

  • How do I import part of my libraries from iphoto and itunes from iCloud?

I just downsized and bought a mac book and am wanting to import music and photos from my old mac book pro.  The problem is that I only want to import part of each library.  The libraries of both apps were really out of control and had duplicates and unwanted photos, etc.  Can someone help me please?

for purchases from the iTunes store do this:
connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.

  • Blackberry desktop software and itunes music sync problem

Ok so I have a Blackberry Torch 9800, OS 6.0 and the current blackberry desktop softer version 6.1.0.35.
I was previously able to access all my itunes music and playlists via the desktop software. But since I completed the software updates not all my music is loading into the software and none of my playlists are showing up.
I'm not sure if this is related but I believe that twice my phone has rebooted itself. I've also noticed that the new desktop software has had issues detecting my phone. My main concern is the problem with the music sync issue.
In the interim I have just dragged and dropped music files onto my memory card. Can you please let me know what I can do to fix this if anything....thanks.

I just experienced the same thing and after feeling frustrated for about an hour and wishing I'd learn my lesson and stop upgrading software for no reason, I went into the Desktop Manager software Device Settings.
Under Device Settingsgo to the Media tab and you'll see a Music Source option. I found that my default setting was on Windows Media Player instead of iTunes. Once I switched it back my view refreshed and my playlists showed up again.
    Hope this helps!

  • Problem in restore software and files from time machine to new hard disc

hello, recently im just change my macbook's hard disc, and i can't open any of my software and also the finder is keep no responding after i restore my files and software from time machine. Got any solution about it?

I see. Don't do that. I do not believe using Migration Assistant is a valid method of accomplishing what you intend.
Furthermore, unless you are using the "Enter Time Machine" feature, you really shouldn't pick and choose what you want to copy from a Time Machine backup... "no user serviceable parts inside". You can certainly find and individual files and folders in the Finder, but you will run into the permissions problems you describle. I would not attempt to circumvent those protections.
As I understand Time Machine, you must either restore a volume from a Time Machine backup, thereby erasing the volume first, or restore individual files and folders by using "Enter Time Machine" when the backup has already been properly designated for the source.
Since your replacement hard disk - the source, now - is technically new, the latter is not an option. It's as if you were trying to restore to a different computer. This can't be done.

"String PRODUCT_NAME was not found in string table."

hmmmm. are you trying to install an itunes version 6.0.x or earlier? that message is associated with the older installer technology used with iTunes prior to itunes 7.

  • 8.1 software and ITunes 11 do not play together very well

Hi. I am new to the ITunes discussions however I see that there seems to be a common thread, consisting of problems in relationship to adding files to ITunes. My situation is about the same issue. I installed Win 8.1 after a systems crash and had to reinstall all of my programs.  When I installed ITunes for Win 8, edition 11.1.3.8, and copied my movies from an internal HDD.  Unfortunately it only added up to the movie Lincoln and then crapped out! No matter what I have tried I cannot add the remaining 316 movies! Even if I try to add one movie at a time it crashes. Anyone know how I can get around this problem so I can see my complete library of movies (579).  I haven't tried to add my TV Shows (over 1000 episodes) because I don't want to add them and then have to uninstall ITunes or something like that!

From iTunes I copied the track into Apple Mail for OSX.
The track appears as a little play bar inside my New Mail Message. It plays, but the Software Instrument is not present or audible.
Do you hear the software instrument in iTunes?

  • How to reinstall Mail and itunes from Time Machine backup

My Mac Pro is running slow and AppleCare have advised to do a clean install of 10.6.6
All my files are backed up and I have done a TM backup. I want to be able to reinstall Apple Mail with all my family email and business email accounts & emails in it and also iTunes with all music and podcasts.
Is there any way I can do this directly from a back up of Time Machine without having to reinstall the whole thing once my machine has had a clean install.
    Thanks in advance
    Matt

First, reinstall OS X as you've been instructed to do. Upon completion of the installation Startup Assistant will give you the option to restore from a TM backup or other external drive. Restore your Home folder, Applications, support files, and network preferences which should return all your files.
If you restore your old system entirely then you will have what you now have - a slow running system.
But before you perform all of the above what you might try first are these:
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    ynchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
