Software Decoding vs Hardware Decod

I know this has been brought up in several other threads previous to mine (http://forums.creative.com/creativel...y.id=605#M2688) but so far, I haven't found out the answer to my questions. So, maybe if the moderators could participate in this topic as well, that'd be great.
I currently have a SoundBlaster Li've 5. X-Gamer and I just recently got Logitech X-530 speakers. I'm playing a movie, and I'm absolutely amazed how much better it sounds with a 5. system. I was using Power DVD 6.0 to play this movie and it was set to 6 channels, so I think this was <EM>software decoding</EM> and not hardware decoding. Or am I wrong? Anyhow, my question is as follows:
) What is are the differences between software and hardware decoding?
2) To use hardware decoding on my SB Li've 5., how do I enable it's
3) I'm not using a receiver, so is this really Dolby Digital?
Thanks for reading this.

"but so far, I haven't found out the answer to my question"
read the stickies.
"I was using Power DVD 6.0 to play this movie and it was set to 6 channels, so I think this was <EM>software decoding</EM> and not hardware decoding"
You're right
"What is are the differences between software and hardware decoding? "
CPU usage
"To use hardware decoding on my SB Li've 5., how do I enable it's"
read the stickies: be sure that your SPDIF setting is set to decoding and set your DVD software audio output to SPDIF.
"I'm not using a receiver, so is this really Dolby Digital?"
Dolby Digital is sound format as any other, so no relation with a receiver.

  • StageVideo Hardware Decoding

Hey guys, I asked this in the flash forum too since its really a flash thing, but since you guys are all video devs and you were so helpful/responsive to my last question, I wanted to post here.
I asked before about using StageVideo in AIR, but I'm on a different project now, and trying to just use it on the web.  It works well, except I can never get a VideoStatus.ACCELERATED status, I can only get a VideoStatus.SOFTWARE status.
This goes for my video player as well as the simple demo here: http://www.bytearray.org/?p=2571
What is required to get both GPU decoding and compositing?  I've tried my player and this demo on multiple machines, and I can only ever get stagevideo working with GPU compositing - not decoding.
    thanks!

    Hi,
On my MacBook Pro I get:
    Hardware Video Decoding : true
    Hardware Compositing (blitting) : true
But on a Windows machine I only get
    Hardware Video Decoding : false
    Hardware Compositing (blitting) : true
It's something related to the hardware capabilities but I know that I've got also Hadware Video Decoding on the Windows Machine using a H264 asset but I don't really know what to tell you about the encoding options I used for encoding that asset.

As I know no sound card ever had Hardware Decoding it's all by software with PC, hardware dsp that will do decoding?have no point you have software + cpu so it is using present?hardware?with software [email protected]

  • [Solved] h.264 hardware decoding on an AGP card in Linux?

It's harder for those of us with older hardware because all the new recommendations are useless to us. Especially when you use Linux as it seems everything is talking about directX and Vista or Windows 7 which mean nothing to me.
    AGP 8x
will be doing h.264 decoding and occasional editing
1920 x 1080 resolution LCD (dvi or hdmi)
dual head would be a plus for later but not vital.
    Not a gamer at all.
Needs to work well with Linux, of course.
I'm running on an old P4 3.0 Ghz so if I can get the encoding/decoding offloaded (especially for flash) on to the GPU this would be a huge help.
Price < $70 on Amazon or Newegg (possibly more if it's really worth it)
I've been looking at a Radeon 2400 Pro 512MB Agp on Amazon but wanted to see if anyone had a better suggestion before I pull the trigger so to speak.

Someone asked me for an update via email so I just realized that I forgot to post as I promised.  It's working out pretty good.  I can play 1080p h264 movies using mplayer with only about 10-30% use of my 3.0 P4 HT CPU using VDPAU.  I wasn't able to get it (x.264 GPU decoding) to work with vlc or the system ffmpeg though.  At least when I set this up many months ago.  So if anyone is just looking to be able to play 1080p h264 videos I definitely would give a VDPAU capable PCI card a shot if you have no other viable choices for your old hardware.  Using mplayer with VDPAU properly configured I don't experience any stuttering at all on my old hardware, believe it or not.

  • How to get dolby hardware decoded sound in xtreme ga

I bought the creative xtreme music when xfi first came out for use in my htpc. I connected the sound card with my creative gigaworks s750 speakers to watch movies on my 42 inch plasma.
After the xtreme music died. I went out and bought creative xtreme gamer(as xtreme music was no longer around) without realizing that xtreme gamer did not hardware decode dolby. ?
Since the replacement of xtreme music with xtreme gamer; I have always had a problem with the clarity of dialogue in movies.
It was only a few days ago that i stumbled upon this issue of "hardware vs softwer" decode of dolby sound in creative sound cards while reading about daniel K fiasco., So now like any audio head, i desperately want hardware decoded sound from my xtreme gamer sound card for dvd's in my htpc.
As per release notes of the new xfi drivers (see below), I won't have hardware decoded dolby sound even, if i install the new drivers released by creative which supposingly allow hardware decoded sound as i own xtreme gamer.
Sound Blaster X-Fi Series with DVD-Audio Playback and Dolby Digital/DTS Decoding
So is there any moded driver out there which can help me get hardware decoded dolby sound from my xfi xtreme gamer sound card.
    Thankyou in advance.

after having slept a couple of hours and read about a bit about pulse and jack the general feeling I get is that they cause people trouble.
Understanding how to write a good .asoundrc seems to be the best option, but a bit complicated. Since I didn't actually want sound from both cards, but merely a simpler way to switch, I've given up for now. I wrote a simple script to do it for me, and running that is actually simpler than fiddling in alsamixer, finding and muting/unmuting channels/cards
I don't feel I've solved the issue, since I didn't get what I asked for (sound from both cards at the same time) but I have what I want (a simple way of switching) and I know where to look (finding out how alsa handles virtual cards, setting one up and send all sound that goes there to my actual cards or configuring pulse/jack this thread was sort of helpful as it begins to explain a .asoundrc) if I feel a need for it in the future.
Thanks anyway for all the help. After 4 years of Arch use (and more then I can remember on linux) I still feel like a noob sometimes. It's good to have a community.
    here is my, almost, solution
    #!/bin/bash
#creating or uncreating the .asoundrc config file by renaming it
    if [ -f $HOME/.asoundrc ]
    then mv -v $HOME/.asoundrc $HOME/.asoundrc-no-use
echo "this should give audio to your speakers"
echo "more specificly, audio from the motherboard (default) soundcard"
    elif [ -f $HOME/.asoundrc-no-use ]
    then mv -v $HOME/.asoundrc-no-use $HOME/.asoundrc
echo "this should give sound from the HDMI on the graphicscard"
    else
echo "this script doesn't do your setup"
    fi
#restarting alsa is needed to read(or not find) the .asoundrc config file
#and to do that you need privileges
    sudo /etc/rc.d/alsa restart
    exit 0
    combined with
    ~/.asoundrc
    pcm.!default {
          type hw
          card 1
          device 9

  • Is and will hardware decoding of DTS be working in future driver releas

I have an Audigy 2 ZS card that when I had windows xp both AC3/DD and DTS Hardware decoding was working, now I have been running Windows Vista 64 ultimate with SP and using the recent beta drivers from creative I am getting Dolby Digital hardware decoding only but no DTS decoding from my hardware as like from before with XP, is anyone else getting hardware DTS decoding in Vista 64 or is this a feature still lacking untill the final driver release comes to be Available (crossing fingers) in July?

  • How to convert the data decoded by MJPEG Decoder MFT into RGB32

I try to play .avi file(Motion JPEG) with MJPEG Decoder MFT and
My ColorConverter MFT to convert into RGB32 by using the Media Foundation.
The output format of MJPEG Decoder MFT is YUY2.
So, I implemented My ColorConverter MFT to convert YUY2 into RGB32.
I set the  topology to play .avi file and  to convert into RGB32.
But I got a MEError event with ME_ARITHMETIC_OVERFLOW in
    IMFMediaEvent->GetStatus(&hrStatus)); after the event MESessionTopologyStatus.
So,the file isn't started to play.
    The created topology is follow.
Source-> MJPEG Decoder MFT -> My ColorConverter MFT -> EVR
               Format:                    YUY2
    RGB32
Why do the error occur in processing to convert the data decoded by MJPEG Decoder MFT
    into RGB32?
Please tell me a appropriate way to convert the data decoded by MJPEG Decoder MFT
    into RGB32.

You've got the High Speed Data Reader.vi as a starting point. That will retrieve the binary data and plot it on a chart. From the array of sgl's created, you could then use the Write to Spreadsheet File.vi to create a comma or tab separated file. The other option is to write the data straight to Excel using ActiveX. There's a shipping example that shows how that's done as well.

  • Can others on a shared wi-fi slow down my connection or block my connection with software or special hardware?

Hi, Can others on a shared wi-fi slow down my connection or block my connection with software or special hardware?  My connection has been very spotty and many times cuts off.  The router is in our upstairs living room only 70 feet from my room, but it just seems like recent connections have been horrible.  Also, I noticed the following image when trying to access the apple webpage.  Anyone know what that might be?  It's not the usual apple icon next to the address.
    thanks
    Dave

    Welcome,
Indeed, by definition other users would "share" the bandwith and hence slow you down - but not cut you off.
More likely is that there are other devices (e.g. cordless phones) are causing interference. You don't specify which AP you have but if it an 802.11n one you should get better reception as the 5GHz range does get so much interference.
Try utilities like NetSpot or iStumbler to see what's in range.
The icon on the web page is probably something else not related to WiFi

  • Configuration Error This Software requires certain hardware or software. .

I installed FCP on my ibook so I could do some work in transit, and got the following error when I tried to open FCP. Is There a way around this?
Configuration Error This Software requires certain hardware or software which is missing - APG graphics card

    #29: Need AGP Graphics card
Shane's Stock Answer #29 – Error: “Need AGP Graphics card”
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302667
The Final Cut software is looking for a graphics card type that is required for that version of the software. FCP 4 and FCP 4.5 were released when AGP cards were the requirement. Attempting to open this on a Mac with a PCIe graphics card, such as an Intel Mac, will cause this error. FCP 4.5 is not supported on the Intel Macs. If you happen to have a PowerPC Quad processor Mac and get this error, you can try this hack:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
You can also press the "esc" key as you launch FCP. This enables FCP to open and run, but know that it might not work optimally.
If that doesn’t work, or if you have an Intel Mac, you are going to have to upgrade to a supported version of FCP…and FCP 6, part of Final Cut Studio 2, is the latest version.

  • Creative software wont detect Hardware

I've been spending days and nights on this.
    ?OS : Windows 7 Home 64bit
?Sound card : X-fi Titanium Fatalty PCI express
After plugging in the card to the MB, Windows 7 detected a card there. downloaded generic sound drivers and called the card High Definition Audio Device or something of the sorts. Using the creative auto update prgram, it told me to download the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Driver 2.7.0007. When installing, it would give me an error saying there is a more up to date driver installed already. I know that "HD audio Device" is not the most up to date drivers. I tried uninstalling the drivers then installing the creative one. Win7 constantly installs its own drivers over and over again. I have Home, so i cant use the group policy trick to turn off auto driver install. So i looked through the CD that came with the card and found a force overwrite driver install. Clicked it, Software installed just fine. Restarted windows, installed the latest card drivers perfectly fine. This took me about 3 hours. Not wanting to bang my head anymore i went to bed.
?The next day I hit the auto update and its wants me to download a bunch of these creative software packages. I only downloaded Creative Console Launcher 2.6.35, Creative Diagnostics 5..02. Both of these prgrams do not detect the card and will not start. I tried re-installing, starting it up in compatibility with vista, xp. Nothing. I did not want to delve deeper into this knowing i would spend hours non stop trying to figure this out.
?The next day Win7 updates tell me to install "Creative - Audio - Creative X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM)", Thinking that Win7 finally recognizes the card, i install. Now there is no system tray icon for audio and the drivers rolled back to 2.6.3? Along with this Win7 update, creative audio control panel was installed and also does not detect any sound device, yet sound is playing just fine and i can access the sound settings through the windows audio panel. I have downloaded Product Identification Module Update. Software stil does not detect sound card.
? Yes i have read through many other post across the forums. Sadly, they were lacking a lot of details. I will be updating this post realsing any new details i come across in trying to fix this issues. As to the main point behind this, I would like to know if there is a fix somewhere for my specific problem. That problem being, I am not able to use my soundcard to its full potential and i would like very much to.
    ## After Several registry cleanings and restarts, the tray icon is back again.
Using the "Creative System Information" program, it does in fact detect the correct hardware and drivers. If anyone would like to see the Creative System Information Report just ask and i'll send it.
    ### Experimenting with the software on the CD, the Creative Volume Panel works, and the AutoMode swticher works just fine. So why is it that these programs work and detect a souncard, but the others dont?

*Re: Creative software wont detect Hardware& The beat goes on. In searching the Creative web site, I couldn't find my web cam ?model listed and in the download area, it was written that if the model is not present, they no longer support it with updated drivers specifically for W-7 . I have two computers that I have tried to install the web cam on:
-one running 64 bit W-7. This one sees the mike and ear piece but not the video.(no green light on the camera); attempts to load the drivers from the disc that came with the camera failed.(Repeated several times)
-one running 32 bit W-7. This one sees the video camera which shows my face on the screen so it works; the audio for the ear piece and the mike can not be seen saying no sound card is present. We took some cards out ?from the original home entertainment model relating to tv and such?but the audio card function?should still be on the motherboard. This computer did run the web cam before in XP with all the extra cards present.
I think the systems?are using Realtek drivers.

  • Is there a difference between Audigy 2 hardware decoding and DVD/MPEG-2 software decodi

I have a capture card and run my PC as a part time HTPC. The audio and video is analog captured and MPEG-2 encoded by the card.
I have the Nvidia DVD/MPEG-2 decoder set to SPDIF(reciever) so it sends the audio stream directly to the Audigy 2.
When playing any of these recorded shows, the only way I get any surround sound on my 5. speakers is to have CMSS () turned on, and it's ok (but not as good as true DVD quality 5.).
What I am wondering, would there be any difference if I upgraded the Nvidia codec to the platinum version, which does software 5. decoding? Would it do a better job of decoding any Dolby Surround material?

  • The software that used to decode the media is not available on this system

I can see that this has been asked numerous times over the years.  I am sorry to post this AGAIN, but I have not yet found a solution and have a deadline looming.
    We created a 200+ DVD's using Encore CS6 on a Windows 7 system.
We upgraded to Windows 8.  Re-installed CS6 Production Premium.
Now, when we try to open the projects to make a few edits, we get the "The software that's used to decode the media is not available on this system.  Installing the correct decoders for the files you are working with may help to correct the problem."
I've done the Encore Updates.  I've done the Media Encoder updates.  I've "Run as Administrator".
    I've tried re installing.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to debug this?  The videos are already transcoded as *.m2v files.
You'd think this would be easy... like install a codec or something.
    ==> Mike.

Part of the problem is that this is probably not a "logical" error.  The common cause of this issue is still image files where the pixel size is too large. This suggests that Encore's (and other Adobe apps) ability to handle image size is exceeded without a better error message. The link, which I'm going to post until I find a "new" location (if one exists) is now a bad link:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/encore/kb/error-software-used-decode-media.html
And in this example where it was not an image issue, the user fixed the problem by re-encoding the problem file.

  • Hardware decoder on Audigy2

First, please, accept my appologies on my english.
Befor I bought my NX I've made some studies on it.
I found out that it has an ARM9 processor (Cirrus Logic EP7309) wich the manufacturer sais that it can decode MP3, WMA, AAC - hardware. Well, Audigy2 NX doesn't do that. I thought thay maybe, in time, Creative will release some driver updates to do that. Now, from November 04 I'm still waiting for that to happend.
    Q. Will it ever happend, Or I'll have to cut my venes out!
Q2. If not, WHY! (I woud like to know why I'll die!!!
I beli've that it is a wonderfull feature.
Q3. What are the hardware acceleration capabilities at this moment?
    Thanks!

Have a look at the portal sizing guides, see the following thread which discusses this in more detail.

  • Very sloppy playback with AC3/DTS Hardware Decoding with

I just bought the Audigy 2 ZS (plain)
I tried playing back DVD movies using SPDIF output on PowerDVD and I get VERY VERY sloppy playback, both with AC3 and DTS audio.
I thought it should perform better than my previous SB Li've! 5.

Which settings are you using and what kind speakers do you have? If you have analog speakers, are you doing the decoding with the software or with the soundcard? Check for the card whether AC3 decoding is enabled (in the Device Controls). If it isn't, try enabling that and setting the DVD software to SPDIF instead. Or if it's enabled, set the decoder to disabled/SPDIF, and set the DVD software to 5. and see if it's the same.
If you're using digital speakers then both should be set to SPDIF (so decoders disabled).
