Software distribution flow in SCCM 2012

Could someone of you help me to understand the software distribution flow in SCCM 2012 (Troubleshooting flowchart),
which includes the content library concepts..

There is also a troubleshooting book which explains it very well.

  • Software Distribution Flow between SCCM (2013) and BMC (8.1), using Orchestrator

    Hi,
I see same question has been asked in the past with older versions of SCCM, BMC and Opalis...but would like to know if there are any specific benefits or advancements or even higher feasibility of implementing below, using Orchestrator
    1) Data load: Load HW/SW Inventory from SCCM into BMC Remedy System. Is it even possible to load Asset Intelligence data so that both systems can correlate common data
    2) Create a flow which connects both BMC remedy & SCCM using Orchestrator
     a) End user to raise a request in BMC remedy system
     b) Shoots an email to Assset Mgmt & Mgr etc for approvals
     c) Record their approvals back (thru email or over webisite/url)
     d) If approved to create an instruction (deployment) in SCCM for that system
     e) Retrieve the status codes received by SCCM, if successful then short mails to user & service desk
     f) Modify BMC Remedy Asset Mgmt for that software to reduce availability by one count
     g) Close the ticket
or any other simpler connectors available out there ?

    Hi,
You can try IP for BMC Remedy from Kelverion’s website:

Right Click : "Deployments Created, Modified, or Deleted" - Show Message and select your period.
    You'll have your information there.

  • Issue setting up PXE Enabled Distribution point for SCCM 2012.

I'm trying to set up SCCM 2012 in my Lab Enviroment in order to plan for implmentation to production.
I have installed and Configure one Primary site which has a working DP role width PXE /WDS.
And i am able to successfully do and OS Deployment.
I want to setup an additional Distribution point with PXE, to simulate a branch Office.
Installation of the second Distribution point looks to be succesfull, but i'm not able to boot on PXE.
It allways gives me the error messeage "The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a vaild OS entry
The same error messeage is given before i distributed the boot images (both x86 and x64)
So my thougts are that he WDS dosn't find the bootable images somehow.
I can see that the images are added to the RemoteInstall\SMSImages directory, but i also see the following in smsdpprov.log

Server is a clean installed Windows 2008 R2, only added to domain, added the primary SCCM server account as local Admin, added WDS Role and configured RemoteFolder before adding DP role from the SCCM Console. (So SCCM has installed and Configured IIS)

Looks like i have found the answer at least i have got it to work.
Once i install .Net Framework 3.5.1 Feature on the server, i was able to boot succesfully into SCCM Task Sequence Wizard.
I also was successfull installing the the PXE DP role from the console succesfully without having to install WDS first.
So i guess that .Net Framework 3.5.1 is required for PXE DP role on Windows 2008 R2. (but i can't see that mentioned anywhere here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/c1e93ef9-761f-4f60-8372-df9bf5009be0#BKMK_SiteSystemRolePrereqs)

  • App v package distribution issue to sccm 2012 DP

    Hi,
We are migrating app-v 4.6 packages to sccm 2012 , after importing the packages when we update DP its not copying the dependent scripts inside the appv package to Dp and hence when application launches it fails to launch the vb script.
the script is made to run when shortcut is launched, but no vb script is copied to DP , but I have all files intact in source folder iyt just copies .sprj,xml,osd.
Please suggest how to make all the files in package abcd.001 to get copied in DP.
Does App-v package distribution is different from normal package.
    Thanks
    Shuaib

Open up the app in the sequencer, add the file to your scripts folder. If the script requires to be run elevated, you'll want to use the Deployment config file and use Global publishing....
If you don't need elevation you can use the User Config and won't need to publish globally.
Fore more info and some examples, check this out:

  • How to remove the parent-child software update point in sccm 2012 sp1

I have a CAS , Primary site server(1) and secondary site servers (7). I have software update point installed on CAS, Primary server and Secondary site servers as well.
I have a situation to reinstall the software update point which is in primary site server.
So, How to reinstall the software update point in primary site server since this is located in the middle between CAS and secondary site servers.
So, please suggest me, do I have to do anything special apart from the normal steps to uninstall and reinstall the SUP point on primary site server?
I have referred few posts on how to remove SUP

    and how to install SUP
    http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/4467-using-sccm-2012-in-a-lab-part-6-deploying-software-updates/

    Hi,
    >> please suggest me, do I have to do anything special apart from the normal steps to uninstall and reinstall the SUP point on primary site server?
I just tried to reinstall the SUP on the Primary site(only one SUP on Primary site and there is a SUP on Secondary site). The SUP upstream data source of the Secondary site showed empty and greyed out. But the upstream data source resumed after a while.
It seems nothing special needs to be done.

  • Software center permissions error, SCCM 2012

I'm getting a strange error in the software center.  The applications and packages deploy without any problems but users receive an error when trying to install the application or package through software center.  They receive the error "Insufficient
Permissions for Software Installation" and "Your IT department has set restrictions for this software that prevent it from installing on your computer".  I have attached the screenshot.  We are running SCCM 2012 on Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server
2008 R2 on a separate server.  If this is something that is configured on the server I don't remember ever doing it but I can't find that error anywhere on Google so I'm kind of at a loss for the moment.  Again, any help is greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

EDIT: Found this in the SCCM Documentation Library doc file (Feb 1, 2013).
Why do I see an error message about insufficient permissions from a Windows Embedded device when I try to install software from Software Center?
You can install applications only when the write filter on the Windows Embedded device is disabled. If you try to install an application on a Windows Embedded device that has write filters enabled, you see an error message that you have insufficient
permissions to install the application and the installation fails.

  • How to management of software license compliance in SCCM 2012

    Hi,
Anyone using SCCM 2012 to manage software licenses? If so then I would like to find out more about it and would appreciate if you could share your experience and current setup.
    thanks
    Ihunzai

I was thinking to use the metering usage data on the products that are reporting over in licenses via AI inventory and push an un-installer package to the ones who have not used products in more then x months to bring the numbers down in AI.
Before, I do anything I wanted to understand how to go about with AI and importing software licenses. I would appreciate if anyone has enabled AI and imported software license file to get some numbers.
    Thanks

  • SCCM 2012 Client delpoyment in SCCM 2007 Native world

    Hi Team,
In my account I have SCCM 2007 running in Native mode.... we do not support internet based clients there..but work on HTTPS only. Now I have implemented SCCM 2012 R2 there and now testing the client migration so that I can upgrade the SCCM client agent from
2007 to 2012. In SCCM 2012 we have to support internet based clients and so the SCCM 2012 client which we need to install should be compatible on internet and intranet both
The plan is to use the existing SCCM 2007 infra to do that. Send the ccmsetup.exe ( of SCCM 2012 ) in a package to all the clients via SCCM 2007 Software Distribution and trigger SCCM 2012 installation.
Just to do a small test I did this :
    1. Created a folder in C drive of a client machine and copied the ccmsetup.exe ( of SCCM 2012 ) in it.
    2. Tried to trigger the installation with below mentioned commandlines..... but getting error as mentioned below.... Please help.
    Command line used :
Here ABCD.contoso.org is the intranet MP and PQRS.dmzone.org is internet MP

  • SCCM 2012 - Pull distribution point and target PKI or HTTPS DPs

I have spent several days researching this and so far have found only a single page that even takes a stab at offering a solution.
    Problem:
Trying to target an HTTPS DP when creating a pull distribution point in SCCM 2012 R2. The link that I'm referring to that does offer a workaround is here(guess I can't post a link, but it ends with the following, how-to-set-an-https-distribution-point-as-a-source-dp-for-pull-dps)
I have several problems with the proposed solution.
Is a script really the only way to proceed with something that has up till now been a built in feature with the rest of the product.
You have to provision the DP to use a self signed cert initially for it to even work, then supposedly you can add the private key to the DP later.
Does that mean I have to unbind the cert from both the pull and target/source push DP in IIS?
Powershell which would be a logical way to go, doesn't seem to make any head way(Mr. Snover I know you don't oversee configman but please push for more documentation, you've taught me to live and die by get-help. A single example for a command as large
as set-cmdistributionpoint or add-cmdistributionpoint is a shame. Perhaps my update help just didn't finish properly and I'm talking prematurely. If that is the case then I apologize!)
Is there no other solution other than build the DP with a self signed cert then run this VB script and then switch the private key later? I have read through a lot of the pull DP documentation and it makes mention of leveraging the SDK but I haven't seen
anything definitive. I would like to at the very least convert this from VB to powershell(if that script is the only option) and I know how to convert the portions where it's interacting with the site's WMI namespace (smsprovider if I'm not mistaken).
What I don't know how to do, rather don't have the chops for is what comes after. The site control file piece, I see it's also WMI and I could spend the time stepping through the different piece and just might to learn more about SCCM in the lab anyhow. I've
spent the last year getting to know powershell and have spent next to no time with VB. I know enough to recognize what a script is doing.
    The environment:
The reason this is important for me is I'm about to start the production build(been all lab up till now) that is going to have just under 300 DPs in the field connected via T1 lines. They were all 07 secondary sites. I was thinking about migrating them using
the migration tool but considering the amount of work its going to take if that link is the ONLY path to target a HTTPS DP then I might as well just spend the time and manually uninstall and reinstall the field DPs. The client count in the field is an average
of 50 machines per site where there are on-prem devices... Total client count is around 25k. The primary site in the datacenter will house the majority of the site roles unless I start running into resource issues, at which time I will begin offloading site
roles to one of two more servers that I have slated for the project. No CAS, no Secondaries. SQL is co-located on the primary.
    Ramblings:
I'm sure there are more people out there using PKI, and using pull DPs. How have you managed to target your HTTPS enabled DPs? Security wants this to be a HTTPS only environment, and up until now I have successfully done that. If someone could please point
me in the direction of some more thorough documentation I would be very grateful. I understand that this is a somewhat new feature, but there has to be an easier way. Perhaps powershell can cleanly do it with the set-cmdistribution point...but when I update
help and do showwindow for the command I only get one example and so far haven't found any other stories like mine with the exception of the link I posted in the beginning.
While I'm rambling, Wally there are a lot of us in the community that are going to miss your presence at Microsoft and should you read this I wish you luck with your new position. But that is a whole different topic. Thanks in advance for any links or help
    you can provide. -K.R.

Yes, this is the only way, from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712321.aspx#BKMK_PlanPullDps: "However, you can use the Configuration Manager SDK to specify a source distribution point that is configured for HTTPS. To use a source distribution point that is configured
for HTTPS, the pull-distribution point must be co-located on a computer that runs the Configuration Manager client. "
Does "why" really matter , who cares? It just is. Whether it was an oversight, a coding bug, or an act of God doesn't change anything. Why does there "have to be" an easier way? And what's wrong with using the VBScripts others have
written? A script is a script is a script particularly if you've been given it already. Just because the hammer is pink doesn't mean it can't hammer the nail in.

  • "Enable distribution-point sharing for this source site" did not showing SCCM 2007 DPs as SCCM 2012 content shares for CM12 clients

    Hi
We have one central site server and three primary site servers in SCCM 2007 and completed the SCCM 2012 migration as single hierarchy.
During the migration, We have configured SCCM 2007 Central site server as source hierarchy for data gathering process and configured the "Enable distribution-point sharing for this source site" to make SCCM 2007 distribution points
as SCCM 2012 content shares to serve SCCM 2012 migrated clients. Now we are facing a problem that one of the primary site server's data gathering process did not gather SCCM 2007 DPs even though we configured "Enable distribution-point sharing for this
source site" but data gathering process is completing successfully.
Is anyone have idea, why these SCCM 2007 DPs did not appearing as SCCM 2012 content shares under "Shared Distribution Points"
    Thanks in Advance
    srkr

Now we are facing a problem that one of the primary site server's data gathering process did not gather SCCM 2007 DPs even though we configured "Enable distribution-point sharing for this source

Earlier all the shared DPs are showing under  Shared Distribution Points ? Or since starting itself these DPs are not showing down? Have you checked migmctrl.log for some clue?

  • Software Metering SCCM 2012 R2 - Firefox.exe

We have software metering setup in SCCM 2012 R2 environment and it seems to be working well for most applications we have it configured for, with the exception of Mozilla Firefox. It's configured to monitor firefox.exe and for the version we are using
the * so we get any version. We have Google Chrome setup the same way for chrome.exe and it works great. However when we run a report for Firefox there is no data. On a test system I have watched the mtrmgr.log and when I open Firefox, it says there are no
matching rules. Am I missing something here, is there some trick to getting this to work for Firefox? Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply. yes initially I had it set to "Any" for the language. I tried changing it to "English (United States)" to see if that would make a difference but it did not. I also tried browsing to "C:\Program
Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" and allowing the version to fill in automatically to 31.4.0 (rather than using the *) to see if that would make a difference but it also did not. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks again!

  • Adding New SCCM 2012 SP1 Distribution Point To Replace Existing Distribution Point

We currently in the process of the doing a site server refresh at all our remote sites. Each remote site currently has a physical 2012 SP1 DP, and will be replaced with  a new DP at each location, and will eventually decommission the current one.
What's the best way to introduce a new DP and remove the old one?
    Thanks
    Bern

You can use this method if distributing through the WAN is not an option.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kensmith/archive/2013/08/01/migrating-the-content-library-between-distribution-points-in-sccm-2012-sp1.aspx
If you don't care, just add it to SCCM and replicate your content. Modify your boundary once done.
I hope you have a DP Group, if so, just make it member of the group and all your content will be copied. If not, you'll have to go through all your content and add it manually or script the process using PowerShell.
To remove your existing it's simply a matter of removing the "Distribution Point" role on your Server using the SCCM Console. (Administration / Site Configuration /Site Server, select your distribution point, right click Remove)

  • Deploying ipa file via SCCM 2012 R2 / Intune

    Hello Experts,
We recently set up a Windows Intune Subscription in our Configuration Manager 2012 R2 Environment. The MDM part (Configuration Items) and deploying app store deep links is working without any problems.
In our company we have a native iOS App which is currently distributed via a website. (Not App Store!). I tried to distribute the app via configuration manager 2012 r2 but the app doesn't show up in the company portal even after a day. I made the following
    steps to distribute the app:
    1. Received the ipa and plist File from the Developer.
    2. Added the application to configuration manager 2012 r2
    3. Deployed the application to my intune user collection (DP: manage.microsoft.com / Purpose: Available)
Did i miss any importent step? One thing i can say is that the app is not signed with our APN Certificate which is used in the Intune Subscription. According to our developer this should not be neccessary?!
    Thanks for any advice.

I redeployed the app and the following entries were in the logs:

  • Inventory of ALL exe files in SCCM 2012

    Hi
We are at the beginning of our SCCM 2012 migration and were asked to start inventorying all EXE files on PCs. We were doing this in SCCM 2007 for all systems and the same data is needed again. Is this recommended? Also what impact can I expect
by enabling this in Software Inventory? I know it can take several hours but didn't know what kind of bandwidth we should expect since new inventory data is sent back up to the database after a 2007 client has been migrated to SCCM 2012.
I tried to deploy a custom Client Setting to a collection with my Test machines to test the Software inventory of all EXE files and the test clients are only running what's in the default Client Settings and not the custom one. I
would like to ultimately only run this on PCs and don't want to enable this in the default settings.
Is Client Settings supposed to behave this way when it comes to software inventory? How do I go about doing this?
    Thanks

No you should not inventor all exe, and no it is never recommend to do this, even in CM07! This process will take a very long time to complete, it will in fact block other process from working will it scanning too. In fact in CM12 the process can take
days! Yes I said days! It takes 4 hours to complete on my SSD HD and I'm only scan 6 files in two directories.
