Software for animated short films?

Hello!
We would like to make some animated short films, and would like to hear any tips people might have on what software to use on OS X.
An amateur level SW would be sufficient, but if there isn't any available we would consider a pro application.
All the best, Magnus

Depends on what type of animation you're looking to do..
There are several pro level 3D modeling and animation apps including Newtek's LightWave3D and AutoDesk's Maya.
Search http://www.versiontracker.com or http://www.macupdate.com for 'animation' for some other, generally less expensive, alternatives.

I Use the last FCX but  I have a prob when I export (share) to dvd the result is over 4GB for a single DVD is about 6 to 9 Gb for a short film of 1h so what can I do to fix this thnks

These "Share" files are accessed and used by the Create Disc app.
Create Disc is buried in the FCP X package.
    Applications>FCP X>Show Package Contents>Contents>Plugins>Compressor>Compressor Kit.bundle>Show Package Contents>Embedded Apps>Create Disc
I'm wondering if having the Compressor Application on a Mac makes a difference to having just FCP X on a Mac and the use of the Sharing feature.
I have Compressor loaded and find that DVD and Bluray burns from Share without any glitches as some are experiencing.

  • My sounds for my short film aren't playing.

i am using artificial sounds for my short film.  I had the street noise.  then i added sounds of a door opening and closing and i exported it and it was fine.  the next day the door sounds had an next to them.  i deleted and re added. no but still no sound.  why!?

YouTube is not down on my iPad. You may want to try a soft reset of your device. Hold the "lock" and "home" buttons at the same time until the screen changes to the Apple logo. If that doesn't work, it can either be a problem with your internet connection. Make sure you can connect to everything else, and then call Apple support.
WARNING: Telephone support MAY cost you if you are not covered by Apple Care.

  • Is there a way to convert iMovie projects to HDCAM for a short film submission?  They also accept 35mm or D i g i t a l B e t a N T S C.  Help!!!

I am working on a short film project for a film festival - they require the film to be in either 35mm, Digital Beta NTSC or HDCAM.  Is this possible with IMovie or in Adobe?  I have tried to research this online and am not finding out much information.  I am hoping someone here has knowledge of these types of conversions and can point me in the right direction.  Help!!!  Thank you in advance for any thoughts or ideas!!!

35mm is film and Digital Beta and HDCAM are tape.
iMovie is not able to output to tape and even if it were you'd need a the appropriate tape deck to do it.
Your best bet is to find a television post production house that can take a computer file and output it to tape.
    Where are you located?

  • Help with merged clip decision for a short film

Greetings and thanks in advance for any perspective you can offer.
I've begun to edit a short film (10 minutes) that has 3 hours of dailies.  The clips are all merged clips, created with dual system audio and synced with Plural Eyes 3.
However, before setting to what's sure to be months of work, I wonder if there was a better workflow.  Bear with me.  To begin with, marker comments do not stick with merged clips.  As soon as you select another clip - poof!  They're gone.  And there are other limitations that may or may not affect me down the road.  I guess I'm saying I'm not completely sure what I might want or need to do at some point, but I'm concerned that I'll be limited for using merged clips.
I've realized I can use Plural Eyes to merge my clips and audio fully outside of Premiere CC.  Those clips, once imported, retain marker comments and suffer no other "unique" limitations.
It will be a massive undertaking to resync, re-import, and retag and organize everything - but perhaps in the long haul this is prudent?  Or not?
I'm cutting with Prores 422 at full size 4K, so replacing media isn't a concern.  Anything else I should be worried about?  There's always a chance I'll use a 3rd party to color-correct with a DaVinci.
    Thanks again.

I shoot for about -6dB, with no peaks above 0dB.
Sounds like you have a very weak signal. I'd set away from PrPro and handle this in SB, or Audition. Listen carefully with a good pair of noise-canceling headphones first, and then test on monitors.
Are you working in mono, stereo or 5.1 SS?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • A good audio level range for export to DVD (for a short film)

    Hello,
This question was a bit hard to search for... what is the recommended audio range to keep my project within if I am making a short film which I plan to export to DVD.
As of now, a lot of my audio stays between -30 and -18, even if I turn it up all the way in each clip.  Is it a problem if I add the "Boost" effect to every single audio clip I have?  Or is there a quicker way to turn up the audio (Master volume is already at 100%)
    Thanks!

  • Using iPhone for making short films...

I recently completed an action short film by only filming with my phone, then editing it later with Final Cut Pro.

I was wondering how other people's successes with making iPhone short films have been?

  • Edge Animate correct software for Animated Splash Screen iOS app???

Hi eveyone, I am fairly new to the mobile designing and come from a print background, 99% of my posts are on the InDesign forums.
I was wondering if you could please direct me to the best way to create an Animated Splash Screen for iOS?
Would Adobe Edge Animate be the right tool?
Or is there a different way to do it?
I thought it would be coded by the app developers but I can't really find enough info and I'm a bit out of my depth to understand all the websites I've read.

Yes, it would be pretty simple with phonegap.

  • Recording audio for a short film ideas.

Im gonna record the audio for a shortfilm in a month and im looking for options for doing this, i want to record directly into my hard drive and i thougth to use garageband 08 for that, but its important that in the postproduction everything syncs perfectly (audio and video) so i was wondering if logic or garageband recorded sound at 29.97 fps, or any software from apple, i have quicktime pro and logic studio (but im very new in logic so thats why i was thinking to use something much more simple like garageband or qucktime).
im gonna use the Usb8 from alesis to record the audio to the computer.
    Any ideas please??
    thanks a lot.

use garage band, use Logic, or whatever you like. As long as you're recording audio separately from the video, you'll need to sync it later. recording to the camera eliminates this step (ideally) by syncing the video/audio on the fly.
There is a more complicated and accurate way of doing this, but it sounds like this might work for you:
If you're gonna use your computer to record, make sure you slate each take. Use one of those fancy-pants clacker-slates just like the big hollywood directors. Snap it before each take and use that for sync.

  • Can I use the music "Run down bounty" in adobe elements 11 for commercial production (short film)?

    Hi,
in the sound bar are some songs eg. run down bounty. Can I use them for commercial - short film?
    thx

Are those part of the SmartSound Sonic Fire Library?
If so, you will want to go to the SmartSound Web site: http://www.smartsound.com/ as they have all of the licensing info for their music. You should be fine, but I would check, just to be sure.
    Good luck,

  • Online Documentary and Short film to 2K using only FCS2???

Hi, there is a possibility for us to try to make an online for a documentary and a short film in the coming months. Some time ago I would have thought to send these projects to an online facility (Avid DS, Flame, Smoke...) now I am wondering if we could make those projects in-house using FCS2 (thinking here about Color).
Can we manage well if we buy a good decklink card for monitoring and a good Panasonic Broadcast monitor?... can we be getting close to results achieved before only with much more expensive equipment?
For the documentary we would be given a mix of SD DV Pal and HDV Pal. All of it 4:3 that needs to be converted to 16:9, color corrected and graded. The end exhibition format will be for Digital cinema (2K projector as far as we know). Can we upres with good enough quality using only FCS2? Do the scaling algorithms used by FCS2 for scaling are good enough, in comparison with those like Teragen (4 tap scaling, 16 tap scaling, etc etc)
For the short film we will be given source footage from the Panasonic AJ-HDX900, shot with a 35mm adapter. Footage ingested through firewire to DVCPRO HD. Would FCS2 give us the possibility of making a color grade using Color that would be good enough to make an online and rendering a Digital Cinema compliant 2K (maybe 4K?). Are the upres capabilities of FCS2 sophisticated enough?
Many questions, I know, but looking forward for a good debate
    Paulo

I cannot explain the technical details as to the quality differences between harware upres and software....I am a creative editor. But of course a Terranex hardware upconvert would be the best way to go, and a way I typically go. But I have also used a Kona 3 to upconvert and it does a good job as well. Kinda like a mini-terranex. FCP software scalers are good, and good in a PINCH and when you can't afford a Terranex. Lesser quality, but still good (it'd take an you looking at both on broadcast quality HD monitors to really see the difference). By the time the show you work on gets compressed and broadcast...if you looked at both side by side then? On consumer sets? Hard pressed to tell the difference. BUT, that being said, it is always good to try to get the best quality you can.
As for bit processing and going from color to AE and all that rendering stuff...too technical for me. Stu Maschwitz at prolost.blogspot.com/ does know about this...and prefers to go to AE for rendering. You can e-mail him your question...he's a good technical resource.
Now...as for the Panasonic 1700W...I have seen better monitors than this. I was at a post house that had 10 models side by side and all set up by the company reps...and the 1700 had to be one of the worse looking there. Now, it might be because the rep set it up wrong...but it was VERY BRIGHT. Like someone on a sales floor set it up. There were FAR better options out there. The TVLogic LVM-240W one ($8000) was by far the best. Off axis viewing held up too. The second best was the JVC DT-V24L1D...then the Sony 2450WHD. The JVC and Sony hover around $5000...All US dollars. And ALL are HD LCDs.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 for animation

I've just bought Photoshop Elements 12 with a view to using it to create simple 2D animations.
However, all the tutorials seem to either ignore tihs use or are based on earlier versions and I can't seem to follow them as 12 doesn't work quite the same way/have the same icons/menus.
Can someone please help point me in the direction of something that will help me with creating/editing animations, or tell me I'm using fundamentally the wrong software for animation and should just give up and buy something else (in which case any suggestions gratefully received!).  I'm using Photoshop on a PC.
    Many thanks

You would really need the companion program Premiere Elements 12 as ideally key frames are needed for video and animation.
See this video tutorial for an idea:

Without proper system information and other details like what files you work with  nobody can tell you much. From corrupted prefs to issues with your PS swap file to actual problems with the fiel storage this could be anything.
