Software for checking wireless networks' channel?

Occasionally, another neighbor gets a wireless router. I can now see 6 in some parts of the house. Connection speeds between one AirPorted Mac and another non-AirPorted Mac started getting slow. Changing the channel on my AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express seems to have fixed it. What I'd like to know is that channel everybody is using around here, so we can all avoid collisions. Is there any software that can list all the wireless networks and their channels?

Hi Steven:
There are a couple of Widgets that will tell you the available networks, speed and connection channel. One is: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/networking_security/airtrafficcontrol.h tml
Give that a try and let us know how it works!

  • Onfigure a WAP54G to act as a repeater for my wireless network hosted by a Cisco/Linksys WAP610AP

How can I configure a WAP54G to act as a repeater for my wireless network hosted by a Cisco/Linksys WAP610AP
I am using ONLY 2.4GHz wireless band on the WAP610AP running Firmware Version 1.0.04
The signal from WAP610AP is weak in my home office and I would like to use the WAP54G as the repeater. Is this possible? If yes, please help!
    TIA

This statement is according to the WAP’s user interface: When set to "AP Client" and "WirelessBridge" mode, this device will only communicate with another Linksys Access Point (WAP54G). When set to "Wireless Repeater" mode, this device will only communicate with another Linksys Access Point (WAP54G) and Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G). In a nutshell, the WAP54G may have a big possibility that it will not work on that device.

  • If i install my airport extreme using a pc, does that pc need to always be in the house for the wireless network to work?

Do I need to have the PC that I set up teh airport extreme with in teh house for the wireless network to work?

No. You would only need the PC to run the AirPort Utility if you ever need to make any configuration changes to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS). You can even do that from a remote location. A computer is not required in order for other wireless clients to connect to the AEBS for network/Internet acess.

  • How do I find out what my username and password is for my wireless network

My printer works through the wireless network, but my scanner doesn't recognize my computer.  I'm thinking I have a username/password issues.

I don't think that its user name and password issue .
As you Printer is working fine with your wireless network that means the router is communicating with the Printer .
For the Scanner check the settings on your printer itself for the Scanner function .

  • Looking for best wireless Network Adapter for my PowerMac G5

    Dual 2.3 GHz PowerMac G5 (PowerMac11,2)
    5.5GBs DDR2 SDRAM
    Leopard 10.5
Before the local Mac Store upgraded me from Tiger To Leopard I was using a Hawking Technology HWUG1A Wireless Adapter. It was clunky and the software crashed me now and then. Now that I'm on 10.5 the Hawking Tech. software  crashed me every time it tried to connect to the router. I uninstalled it using AppCleaner, then reinstalled the Hawking 'Leopard version' of the software/firmware, still crashing me.
There support says "it should work" which I could still pursue getting it to work correctly, but I want to move on since I've never been happy with the product and don't want to risk wasting to much time incase it is simply not going to work.
It seems I have some PCI(e) slots (whatever is in the PowerMac) available on this mac, can it take a wireless network card? That would be much better than a USB doogle. Anyway, I'm looking for a reliable solution for connecting my PowerMac G5 to my router without using cables. Can you please recommend a product if you know of one?
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty

  • Setting up a password for my wireless network. . .

    Hey all
I have a wireless network at my home using a Netgear DG834G v2 router. I need to set up a acess password on the network to stop theiving neighbours - has anyone done this before? If so what procedures did you go through?
I have tried it several times but keep losing the connection to all the computers on the network. . .
Many thanks in advance. . .

I have Dg834v2 as well which is a pain the neck with my macs, passwords and encryption methods are not remembered for more than a day or two by either of my os x laptops. Constantly interfered with by another Netgear router on the same street despite almost daily channel changes. ugh...
The only way I can get any stability at present is to disable all security in the Netgear and only allow the specific mac addresses of each laptop to connect. No idea if this secure and crazy though it is my Powerbook behaves far better as the only mac on the school windows wireless network than at home in a mac only environment !
    Good luck with it!

  • Why won't my time capsule show up when I scan for a wireless network when I plug in the ethernet cable from my comcast modem?

I just setup my cable and internet at my new place yesterday thru comcast.  The internet works when it is plugged directly from my modem to my iMac but when I try to plug the modem up to my time capsule to set up wireless and go through air port utilites it can not find my time capsule

Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Password for Airport Wireless Network

I have a wireless connection with a third party router (dlink). I also have an AE that I use solely to run itunes through my stereo system. I DO NOT use the AE to connect to the internet. I'm not concerned about a password for the AE, but I want to protect my dlink wireless connection. I thought I set up a password by going to the web configuration utility and entering the ip address of my dlink, but when I click on my airport icon it automatically lets me on-line without asking me for a password. Am I making any sense??? Thanks for your help!

Your wireless network is created by D-Link although accessed through the Airport menu!
OK, try this. From your browser (Safari, or Firefox, etc.) connect to the configuration page on your wireless router, for example here's the instructions for one of the D-Link wireless Access points:
    Step 1
Log into the web configuration of the DWL-2000AP by opening up a web browser and typing in the IP address of the Access Point (192.168.0.50).
    Step 2
The default username is admin (all lower case) and the password is blank (nothing) [and you have already changed this passorf to something other than blank]. Click OK. Select the Home tab and click Wireless on the left hand side of the screen.
    Step 3
Select enabled next to the WEP radio buttons. For WEP Encryption select 64 or 128-bit encryption. For the Key Type select HEX.
    Step 4
Select Key 1. In the box, enter a HEX key (a random encryption key that you make up). The length of the encryption key will depend on what you selected under WEP Encryption. The Hex key must be exactly the same on all your wireless products.
    64-bit encryption - 10 characters
    128-bit encryption - 26 characters
The encryption key is HEX, meaning 0-9 and A-F are valid characters.
    Step 5
Click on the Apply button then click on the Continue button to save your settings.
Mac clients may require a dollar sign ($) in fron of the hex key to work. Once you have set a password your wireless clients including your Mac laptop and your Airport Express will not be able to connect wirelessly without that password so it would be a wise idea to enter the password into the Airport Express configuration before making it active on your D-Link!
Here is a site with specific instructions for all the D-Link models since I don't know which one you have:
    http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1081
If you run into trouble the D-Link could be connected with ethernet or set back to factory defaults but that question is better answered by D-Link support folks!
