Software for cleaning-up audio

Can anyone suggest software good at cleaning up audio? I am trying to preserve some audio tapes and am finding two major issues: tape hiss and occasionally high-pitched whistling sounds. Anything out there that can help clean these up? I realize tape hiss can't be cleaned up all that much without seriously compromising the original sound. But I'm hoping there's a way to isolate the frequency of the whistle and remove it. Any suggestions? Any shareware perhaps??
Thanks!

Dimitry,
Check out this site: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ I wanted something to do just what you're hoping to accomplish. I too have a lot of tapes that I'd like to convert to CD; after doing one conversion(to date), though the exercise was worth the learning experience, I may not continue and simply make new CDs of music that I have on my LPs. One of the plug-ins is tape hiss removal. It probably will remove the hiss quite effectively. It's an open source program so no cost is required.
Hope this helps,
Paul

  • Recommended software for cleaning unwanted files, etc...

I am currently running the latest Yosemite(V10.10.2). My Mac Desktop and Laptop are running slow. I have never tried to run a cleaning software for either, mainly because I'm confused to which one best works, as their is so many out there claiming they are the best. Can someone, please recommend a good software that will speed up both my Macs?

[Cleaning Software] ... which one best works
NONE of them. The Mac does not accumulate filth.
They do not work, they cause problems, and some users find they need to re-install Mac OS X because "cleaners" throw away important System files.
Any slowness should be solved by looking at the root causes, and addressing them directly. Running third-party software you download will NOT improve your Mac. If such a thing were helpful, it would already be included in the box with a new Mac. (and it is not.)
Etrecheck is a reporting tool that allows the examination a lot of potential problem areas all at once. Sometimes this turns up the issues quickly and easily. Sometimes more "industrial strength" diagnostic tools are needed, such as Linc Davis scripts or System log lists.

  • Suggestions for Cleaning up Audio in this clip

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7IXq1QDYaU&feature=youtu.be
    Hello Creative Minds,
I'm working a remote editing gig for a fellow wanting to create a video lecture series.  In this clip, I sampled out the noisy and distracting Background ambience of the room he's in.  Unfortunately, now this man sounds like he's talking thru an underground speaker from across the playground...
Audio's not my forte in FC Studio.  Any suggestions to correct this clip's audio track?
    Thanks a million, folks!

Often the very noise you wish to remove is directly in the frequencies of human voice. The more you remove the noise, the more you screw up the voice.
Play with specific frequency dampening, but if it is general "white noise", you just supress it some and live with the result.
Also, sometimes a noise gate can deal with really low level noise.
    x
fwiw- for the next series of lectures, get him to invest in good microphones and have them well placed in the room.
I often record talks in a room where the a/c noise is distracting. By good placement of mics I can reduce that crud to well below the irritation threashold...

  • Is Logic Pro the Best Audio Recording Software for Mac?

Couple questions. I do a lot of audio production and work currently. I use a gateway with Cubase, and its not bad, but I feel like I need something mroe high end.
I'm looking at the 17 inch Imac. Does anyone record using this computer? How's it sound? Is there any way to put in a new soundcard or something if i don't like the current one?
Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best audio recording software for the mac? Are there others as well?
I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't anything high end enough that is TOO high end.
Does the Pro version have superior mixing capabilties. I am primarily going to be micing a guitar amp and having a mixer run into a firewire port, and also using a preamp for my guitar direct into the computers USB.
Lastly, how are the mixing features on Logic Pro vs. Logic Express? I do a lot of post production mixing as well, and use VST plugins. Speaking of that, will it accomodate using a drum program like BFD through VST or Midi like Cubase will?
    Thanks for your time guys.

Yes, you do indeed need sth more high end.

It's not an iMac, but a faithful PowerBook G4 that I am using. Apples Core Audio is awesome. Your sound, however, will depend on your interface.
Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best

That's why we are here, and that's why you ended up in this forum as well
To me personally, Logic sounds warmer and bigger than any ProTools system I've ever heard. From what yopu described as the work you need to do, there is no comparable application. Logic also offers you many more features above and beyond what you currently need to do.
I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't
anything high end enough that is TOO high end.
Everybody is using PT, and you should maybe get a Light Edition version of it. However, as stated above, Logic offers by far more possibilities.

For your purpose, Logic does have superior mixing capabilities. In my humble opinion, only the popularity of PT made it become the choice of studios and engineers, but things are turning...

Logic Express? I do a lot of post production mixing

it accomodate using a drum program like BFD through

If you do post production mixing, forget about Logic Express altogether and go for Logic Pro. LP will accomodate tons of plug-ins, and it comes with a bunch of great one's as well!
The format for the plug-ins is called A(udio) U(nit) and works flawlessly. Many VST plug-ins are also available in AU format and the development of those is moving fast forward.
In other words, yes, you will be able to use BFD in Logic by means of the AU format.
    Thanks for your time guys.
    You're welcome.

  • Is there actually any computer cleaning software for Mac that is safe and works?

Is there actually any cleaning software for IMac that issafe and works. Have an early 2008 iMac, have up-graded RAM to 6GB.

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; all should be made directly from the original data. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the App Store or Software Update preference pane (depending on the OS version), you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis.
Keeping up to date is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible. Incompatibility with third-party software is by far the most common cause of trouble with system updates.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, such stuff is useless or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
It's not much of an exaggeration to say that the whole "utility" software industry for the Mac is a fraud on consumers. The most extreme examples are the "CleanMyMac" and “MacKeeper” scams.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for, and doesn't change the way other software works.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    4. Don't install bad, conflicting, or unnecessary fonts. Whenever you install new fonts, use the validation feature of the built-in Font Book application to make sure the fonts aren't defective and don't conflict with each other or with others that you already have. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. Deactivate or remove fonts that you don't really need to speed up application launching.
    5. Beware of malware. Malware is malicious software that circulates on the Internet. This kind of attack on OS X used to be so rare that it was hardly a concern, but it's now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must come directly from the developer's website. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from the web, without your having requested it, should go straight into the Trash. A web page that tells you that your computer has a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with it, is a scam.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    6. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem.
While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage use and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move seldom-used large files to secondary storage.
    7. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
To use a Mac effectively, you have to free yourself from the Windows mindset that every computer needs regular downtime maintenance such as "defragging" and "registry cleaning." Those concepts do not apply to the Mac platform. A computing device should not be a focus of your attention. It should be an almost invisible tool by means of which you communicate, work, and play. If you want a machine that is always whining for your attention like a neurotic dog, use a PC.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

  • Software for recording audio streams?

Is there a recommended software for capturing audio and converting to mp3?

    Hi everyone -
I was using Audacity (freeware) for recording streaming audio and able to edit or convert at will . However for Mac ( being a new user) I am not sure what software is suitable. Recently bought an iSoundStudio from Apple but find the functions extremely restricted. Appreciated very much if  someone out there can recommend a good one similar to audacity. BTW, audacity has the Mac version but my system blocked the download,

  • Downgrade to win7 problem with audio drivers. beats audio software for win7?

I recently purchased the HP Envy 700-074 from best buy.  it was necessary to downgrade to windows 7 for some work software and I would like proper audio drivers/software for windows 7. Right now it seems to be detecting as Nvidia audio driver but in this case it doesnt allow my front panel audio ports to output audio. I would also like to have beats working.
here are the hardware ID's associated with the card
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10DE&DEV_001C&SUBSYS_38423619&REV_1001
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10DE&DEV_001C&SUBSYS_38423619
and here's a quick screenshot of the driver that is associating with it right now..

even those VEN_10DE's seem to associate to nvidia, but from HP the driver is meant to be IDT high definition audio? is something going on here?
the only change i've made to the computer is upgraded to an EVGA Nvidia GT 610 video card.,

    Hi, Paul.
    I have similar problem here.
I bought HP Envy 810-200nr and I hate W8, so I installed Windows Server 2008 R2, which is my favourite.
Then I solved numerous problems with chipset drivers and finally it all works, but Audio (IDT HD Audio) does not work.
    Completely silent.
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_76C7&SUBSYS_103C2AF3&REV_1001
    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_111D&DEV_76C7&SUBSYS_103C2AF3
It looks okay, when playing audio - indicator blinks and shows level, volume can be adjusted, all parametrers - speakers, etc seems okay but silent!
I tried numerous drivers for W8 and W7 64 but they give "Incompatible version" error.
Can you advise me what to do? I really want WS2008R2 here, but this audio is weird..

  • Is quality better with software for converting VHS to DVD than using an actual converter?

Is quality better with software for converting VHS to DVD than using an actual converter?

Not sure what you mean by "actual converter".
If you mean if you just played a VHS tape to a DVD recorder and recorded like that... You will get close to the quality of the VHS.
If you have a good capture software and hardware you might be able to clean the video and audio up. But VHS is pretty limited in quality.

  • HT1899 Hi There. Is there a version of BootCamp support software for Windows 8 Customer preview?

Hi There. Is there a version of BootCamp support software for Windows 8 Customer preview as yet?

8 is now Release Preview, not CP, and there is the final release 90-day trial Enterprise which is all cleaned up and ready to use.
So at least someone should be going over with this by now. Things I had that did not work right and unsupported with the Previews are working, but some, a few, need updates.
I don't think most of the issues people have with Mac running 8 are deal breakers or can't be worked around, maybe 2-3 items and heck even 'supported' - if it worked plug and play and no issues... the forum would be dead silent, but it isn't.
Not going to do it again but I have tried to post a consolidated of trackpad, graphics, audio, BT, and other things that get mentioned.
8 won't be ready to buy for full two months.

  • Need Instructions For Clean Install Of Drivers After Refor

Hi, I will be reformatting my hard dri've and doing a clean install of Windows XP Pro SP . I have the CD for upgrading to SP2. I am not a novice with regard to reformatting and reinstalling drivers. However, my Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro was purchased only a few months ago and installed after uninstalling an NVidia Geforce card. Would I install the OS (and all patches) prior to installing the video and then audio drivers? Previously I have installed the OS, video, audio, modem, and then all of the upgrades from Windows Update. I have been all over the Knowledge Base and have downloaded the upgrades (drivers and applications) for my Soundblaster sound card. I also read in here to use the original CD and then update the drivers and software applications. I am getting more confused as I go. I apologize for the long post. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    TechSavvyFreddy,
Here is what I would do:
) Install OS and completely update it first and foremost
    2) Install latest chipset drivers and software for motherboard
    3) Install Video and Update completely
    4) Install the Sound Card from CD then Update completely
    5) Install other components.
That is the best way to assure you get the system set up properly and have all the software installed.

  • 10.3 OS Upgrade error. An error has occurred while downloading software for your device. Please verify your internet connection or try again later

HELP ! HELP ! HELP ! "An error has occurred while downloading software for your device. Please verify your internet connection or try again later, if the problem persists." appears while attempting to upgrade or install BlackBerry Device Software. upgrading my Z10 OS to 10.3 on both (link & web). but facing same problem again and again. plz help. internet speed is 1mbps and working fine.

I suggest you try the very clean and very forceful AutoLoader method:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-10-OS-Device-Software/Upgrading-OS10-devices-using...
Beware that it is completely destructive...the device will be "like new"...no data, no apps, no accounts, etc. Be sure you take a full backup first, as well as make full manual documentation of all apps, accounts, configurations, etc. Sometimes a restore reintroduces the very corruption one is trying to eliminate, and manual reconfiguration is necessary.
You can also use this to fall back to a prior OS if you desire...you can install any OS level for which you can find an AutoLoader. (Hint...search over on the CB site!)
Good luck and let us know!

  • Where is the software for the Lenovo G550???

I want to do a clean install and replace the pre-installed Vista with Windows 7.
I see that the Lenovo G550 download page has drivers for Windows 7, but where is the pre-installed software, like Veriface, camera software, and all other pre-installed Lenovo software? I looked at all OS options for the G550 on the download page, and NONE of them had the G550 laptop software, all they had for each OS option was only  the drivers.
I understand that I can make a recovery DVD, but as I understand  it, it will return the system to the factory fresh state (all pre-installed programs installed, but also with the factory installed VISTA  - yuck!). I didn't see any option to only re-install the  Lenovo software without also re-installing the OS.
When I look at the download pages for other Lenovo  laptops, I see that they have drivers AND SOFTWARE, but the G550 has no software except for the drivers. Since the G550 came with no software disks, and there doesn't seem to be any of the software online, how exactly does one do a clean installation of an operating system, and then re-install the Lenovo software, on a G550?
I was able to find downloads of programs like Veriface on the Lenovo site for different laptop models, but unfortunately those were much older software versions, and for a different Operating system.
Why can't Lenovo post all of the software online? If they aren't going to provide the software on DVD when they ship the PC, then they should at least have it online; so that people can do a reinstallation if necessary. DELL doesn't seem to have a problem putting all of the software for their PCs online, and they also provide it on disk with the PC.
Do I have to find the hidden backup partition and then copy the Lenovo software installation files to a DVD or different drive myself? Has anyone done this, and if so, can they please provide some assistance as to the best way to accomplish this task?
If there is a different/easier way to accomplish my end goal of a G550 with a Windows 7 clean install, and also with a re-installation of all pre-installed Lenovo software, I would be extremely grateful for any assistance. If there is also a way for me to select which factory software I wanted to install, that would be even better ( I don't need all of the crapware that came on the PC)
    Thanks in advance,
    Sven

Thanks, I'll give that a try when I finally get the Windows 7 upgrade disk.
It seems ridiculous that Lenovo doesn't support this product for Windows 7, especially when they mentioned the "FREE" upgrade (with ridiculous "shipping and handling charge") to Windows 7 on the web page where I ordered it. Being a reasonable person, I assumed that when they offered a "Free" upgrade to Windows 7 with the PC, they would also provide the basic software to allow the built-in hardware like webcams to keep on functioning as they did under Vista.
Had I known that they would refuse to offer any software on disks or download, I would have ordered a DELL or some other PC that has a reasonable level of customer service. I am not a typical user; I don't call in for customer support. All I need is the software and drivers, and I will install it myself.

  • I have a new (mid) 2011 imac and want to transfer my old records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for a new mac that would have compatible software for ripping to itunes?

i have a mid 2011 i5 imac and i want to transfer my vinyl records to itunes but i dont know what usb turntable would be best for my imac that has compatible software for transfer to itunes

    Hallo,
I use an Akai usb turntable with the Audacity sw delivered with it. To monitor during recording I also use the LineIn utility (all this on a Macbook Pro with Mavericks).
It works fine, only the input volume of the usb audio port cannot be adjusted (at least I did not yet discover how to do it) and the volume of the music is lower than other music imported into iTunes from CD or iTunes store, but still acceptable.
    Success, Jean

  • What's the best App for cleaning/speeding up Mac using Lion?

Can anyone recommend an App for cleaning/speeding up my iMac and Macbook Pro, both of which use Lion?
Hard drive space is not really the issue, but I can't help feeling that my iMac is not as nippy as it used to be - my basic requirements are:
    1) Easy to use. I'm a competent user, but no guru.
    2) Will confirm details of what is is deleting, cleaning before it does it.
    3) Is reliable and won't crash or bugger-up my system.
    4) Actually works - as I said, don't really need to reclaim storage, but would like to speed up my mac
    5) Doesn't cost the earth.
You thoughts would be much appreciated.
    Cheers all,
    Simon.

Do the below and keep your boot drive below 50% filled and not more that 80%, that's about all you can do without a full reinstall of the OS.
    12: OnyX cache cleaning
Category: OS X, application and User account software related
Description: Gives OS X, application and user account caches a enema, lets then rebuild again new, resolves strange and unknown issues based on cache files being corrupted .
Only cache files are removed, not users data, files, programs or OS X. Some settings will be set back to normal in Finder and other locations. Spotlight will rebuild a new database.
Problems possibly resolved: Varied: Flash install issues, Dock/Finder/File issues, "ghost files", performance and privacy related
    Instructions:
Apple doesn't supply a easy method for the user to self clean the caches, thus we have to turn to third party software.
Use the free OnyX matching your OS X version and run all the initial checks, stop if any give a warning, you have a bigger problem. See #4
Run though all the Maintenance and Cleaning aspects (except don't delete the log files) and reboot at the end (must)
You must be through running all the maintenance and cleaning aspects as this is a "catch all" method and any number of corrupted caches may be responsible for your issues.  You need to REBOOT at the end of using OnyX. Canceling the in-between reboot requests is fine.
Read Step #13 and  perform the Verify > Preferences before rebooting at the end of using OnyX.

  • What is the best temperature gauge software for MacBook Pro?

My MacBook Pro (late 2011, i7 Quad 2.4 GHz, SSD, OS 10.8.5, 8 Gigs RAM) which I use for pro audio production has started stuttering while playing back audio a couple of times - only editing a stereo track with no plug-ins.  I thought it was my Glyph drive because my studio can get warm when the weather's hot in San Diego, even though I've never experienced this before.  However, I moved the current project to my internal SSD boot drive and it started again after using the computer for several hours.  I now think it's a heat issue effecting the laptop itself (it was 85 degrees F in my room).  I want to buy the best software for checking temperatures (CPU, drives, etc.) and am looking at both iStat Menus and Temperature Guage.
Are there any recommendations for which is best (or if something else is better)?  I would rather pay more for software that won't cause me problems when I'm doing large mixes, etc.
    Thanks!
    Robert

They all access the same data, so one's as good as another. iStat Menus is good for displaying a variety of information in the menubar for convenient access. But if all you want are temperature readings then I would select Temperature Monitor 4.98.
