Software for Tape Backups?

Hi
I am using Oracle 10g and want to backup my data on Tape. is there any need for a third party software for this purpose. and if answer is yes, then which software?
thanks

hi,
you could try OSB, Oracle secure Backup. Have a search on metalink/OTN for information.
There are many other vendors who provide tape management software Veritas, IBM etc etc but you will probably need a goodly supply of money for these.

  • Recovery window for tape backups

Hope someone can answer to my questions.
With RMAN you can maintain the number of tape backups that are needed for recovery purpose through the “delete obsolete recovery window” command. E.g. the command below ensures tape backups be kept for recovery within 31 days:
    delete noprompt obsolete recovery window of 31 days device type 'SBT_TAPE';
    Q:
    1)     If I use a disk area as pseudo tape area in my backups (through ORACLE.DISKSBT library parameter), I guess the above "delete noprompt obsolete recovery window" command would work on the pseudo tape area as well?
    2)     At my site the pseudo tape area is backed up to tape nightly through the system backup job, and the tape backups are kept for about 1 month by the tape system. To save space in the pseudo tape area on disk can I just set a small recovery window in the above DELETE command (say 1 day) , and relies on the actual tape system retention policy for oracle backups? How would this affect oracle’s ability to do recovery?
    Thanks

    1) I would never use a 'faked' tape as a permanent solution - only to test tape backup scripts - , as it slows down the backup/recovery process. From RMAN's point of view a pseudo tape works like a real tape, so all valid commands apply.
    2) When you delete a backup, RMAN forgets it. RMAN is not aware of still available backups in the tape system, you have to recatalog the backups. That means overhead in manual maintenance and a source for possible errors.

  • Software for bootable backup

Hi, I need to make a bootable backup of my Powerbook G4 hard drive on an external hard drive. Does anyone know of any free software for doing this?
What is the procedure for re-copying the backup back to the hard drive? Basically, I want to archive the contents of my hard drive onto an external hard drive. Then, I want to be able to copy the backup copy back to the internal hard drive, if necessary.
Thanks very much for any assistance.

Hi John, welcome to Apple discussions! If you already have a Firewire back-up drive, (it has to be Firewire, not USB, as USB will not allow your G4 Powerbook to boot from it), I use "SuperDuper" shareware back-up program - free to try its basic back-up utility and it's easy to use too. Download the program here..http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html Load the program and follow its set-up, in the free to try version, you can only use its full back-up option, but if you wish to use its incremental back-up, you must purchase this..$27.95. Hope this helps, Robert.

  • Tape Backups

    Hello,
Does anyone know what the two para are that I need in OEM 10g using Net Veritas for tape backups.
I want to use OEM to schudule my backups to tapes using MML. What should these two settings be set at ?
Tape Settings - Tape Drives =
    and
Media Management Settings - Media Management Vendor Library Parameters =
    Thanks..

After you get this error in DMP do you go to device manager and do a hardware refresh?  If yes, does Windows rediscover the device?  Also, have you checked the library front panel for issues?  Another thing that I have seen with other backup
vendors is that you can try to play with enabling/disabling the medium changer (if it is enabled disable it, if disabled try enabling it).  The other thing you may want to do is update the drivers on the server the drives are attached to.

  • Backup Software for Solaris 10

Can anyone give me ideas on what software to use to back up Solaris 10 Servers ( V240, 490, & 890). We researched Veritas and they want $15,000. Is there any software with some of the same features as Netbackup? Thanks in Advance!!!

without buying any software, how about trying a flarcreate - it's the only software that sun "officially" - or has stated as such on a support line - for backing up for purposes of duplicating a machine in the event of a failure (like having to copy your storage to another machine and build it up)
you may be able to get a number of things like that (Symantec's BMR) - but all of the other choices are $$s..
I guess it really depends what you're asking -
are you looking to use a tape jukebox/silo/library, or periodically copy your rootdisk (or data disks) to some other near site storage
Consider you didn't even state the word "tape" in your initial post, it's kind of hard to figure out where you're going with this - so let's try this from the beginning... what is the purpose of backing up your machine? Is it for nightly backups, one time backup, periodic rootdisk copies, flash archives, DR?
    regards, and thanks in advance...

  • Recomended TAPE backup for OS X Sever

    Hi,
I would like to inquire regarding back-up device for OS X Server, My client requirement is a TAPE backup, do you suggest any brand of tape backup and software that works well with OSX server?
    Thanks a lot,
    val

You need to clarify your needs before you go much further.
There are many tape technologies, including things like DLT, LTO and AIT (amongst others). Each has their own pros and cons, including per-tape capacity, speed, etc.
Knowing the volume of data to backup and how frequently you want to backup is going to be critical in deciding what tape format to take.
For example if you have 1TB of data to backup you don't want to use a tape format that has 20GB per tape - you'll need 50 tapes for a full backup.
The volume of data and frequency also leads to speed. If you need to backup 1GB of data in an hour your options are dramatically different than if you need to backup 1TB of data in an hour. Some tape formats can keep up with the higher throughput, others can't.
Then, of course, there's budget. The larger, faster drives tend to cost more, but they're more capable. But you don't need to buy capabilities that you don't need.
So, you need to answer those questions in order to find the tape technology you want to use. Once you know the technology you can start looking at vendors.

  • Looking for release dates of Apple external hard drive and Tape Backup 40SC

Does anyone know the release date of these two SCSI drives? If you can ballpark it that would help, but please indicate how certain you are.

    2. Apple "Tape Backup 40SC"
    Image: http://www.borkware.com/rants/stuc-on-you/AppleTapeBackup2.jpg

    Re: the Hard Drive.
I have an Apple brochure dated Feb 1989 that offers the Apple hard Drives: 20SC, 40SC, 80SC, and 160SC \[and that's all].
My recollection of the drive you pictured is that it was mildly scandalous because they were not even made by Apple -- they were made by a prominent (in those days) drive reseller with the Apple logo on them.
    RE: the tape drive
I bought my first Mac, a Mac II, in late 1987. Apple Unix was soon offered for it, but there was no practical way to issue the software except to buy a Hard Drive 80 with Apple Unix pre-installed. The tape backup unit pictured was available some time later, but was far too expensive to use for issuing software.

  • Best software for doing full backups to ext. hard disk to to be used to restore system

As a new PC owner I wanted to find out what the best software for doing full backups to external hard disk,  to to be used to restore the system if primary primary disk crashes. Im aware that Windows, Acronis and Paragon all have software that doing varying degress of back and resore functions.

    lasvideo,
My favorites are ShadowProtect to do an "image backup" of boot drive and Beyond Compare for backing up files for all other "data" arrays. ShadowProtect does not seem to have much market share compared with Ghost and Acronis, but I really love it.
    What I like about ShadowProtect:
    - Extremely fast (complete image backup for 61GB of files on my boot SSD RAID 0 array to a RAID data array takes less than 3 minutes)
    - Can do image backups across a LAN; restores from boot CDROM and USB device
    - Allows for backups from one controller and restore of OS on a different controller and/or RAID configuration (has HAL tools; Hardware ? Layer I think)
    - Can "mount" an image backup as a drive letter and see (and copy) all directories, files, etc. that are contained in the archive
What I like about Beyond Compare:
    - Can choose what to backup and what to ignore very easily (for example you can set it to ignore certain files or directory names to ignore and then save how you set things up as a "session")
    - Only needs to copy over files that are new or have changed since your last backup
    - Makes it very easy to selectively delete files from your backup

I realize iTunes is available for partial backups.
I do sync with iTunes.  I don't like iTunes.
    1.  I have 4 different devices I need to backup up.  iTunes lets you have one account sync'ed to one PC.
    2.  iTunes doesn't backup everything.
    3.  iTunes fails sometimes and you loose what you have sync'ed.  I would like backup software that is more reliable.
    Thanks,

The server is part of a protection group that is co-located, I am trying the backup not as part of a co-located set to see if this makes any difference.
Tape backups for other servers, which are part of the same co-location group, work fine and it seems to be just this one causing the issue.
I have seen a few other posts on the net referencing "WARNING MediaPool 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 does not exist." where people have similar issue with DPM crashing out but so far nobody seems to have any answers.
I am debating removing the protection group and trying to 'start from scratch' but wondered if anyone else had any thoughts ?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
Open SQL management studio and connect to the instance used by DPM.
Run the following Query against the DPMDB and see if it returns any rows, if so please provide the output.
    select MP.mediapoolid, MP.PGSETID from dbo.tbl_MM_MediaPool MP
    Join dbo.tbl_IM_ProtectedGroup PG on PG.ProtectedGroupId = MP.MediaPoolId
    where PG.MediapoolId is NULL
    and MP.PGSetId is not NULL

  • Backup Software For backing up Raid Drives and main hardrive system

i'm, looking for the best software for backing up raid drives. i have rocstor raids. they said retrospect was best but after reading reviews they were not that good. i use super duper but they said for raid drives you need more than a free program
    any ideas
    thanks

I use Time Machine in conjunction with SuperDuper for my backups. I tend to use the simplistic of >the restores in Time Machine for restoring files whereas I like the speed of SuperDuper if a clone is >required. I also like the redundancy of multiple backups by different techniques.
Yes I think its a good strategy. Time machine is great for "undeleteing" if you see what I mean but a clone gets things working again very quickly after a disaster and even if you don't have time to restore you can still boot your computer. I have CCC do an incremental backup every evening at 3am.

    Hi
Currently we are using ARC7 tape (LTO) backup movement in which the product belong to firm CA for windows. We are not having the license to use it for the LINUX os.
In one of our environment we are planning to set up automated tape backup movement for the LINUX OS. (Database Backups such as RMAN and export) It would be great if you suggest few links or procedural steps to use which tape backups , how to configure, which brand, documents, what all procedural steps etc.

I suggest to look into Oracle Secure Backup (OSB) or Oracle Secure Backup Express. The later is free.
