Software for translating video files on my HD to ATV

I was using a free program called Videora, which stopped working. It also was very difficult to use as you had to do one file at a time etc. I then purchased Roxio 9 Crunch, which ostensibly is exactly what I needed. Unfortunately, the software is appalling and the support/service/refund policies are even worse.
What do all of you use to transfer files? I've got a ton of avi's, mpg's, etc on my hard drive and would like to be able to see them on my ATV.
I looked at QuickTime Pro but the user comments below it make me not want to try.
Any help?

I agree with Winston on mpegstreamclip, especially the ease of use. It is also very flexible.
I used it to convert 60+ home movies. It has a feature where you can find the settings that works best for a group of files, queue them up and process them all at once with the same settings applied. I cant remember the exact process, will be using it again soon most likely but it was very easy to do the first time around. You will probably have to tweak it to your preference but you can save a profile of your desired settings so its good for that.
Like Winston said it also depends on what format your files are in. I had AVI files that I had generated from Sony Vegas which I had used 2 years ago to import my movies from my Mini DV cam corder. Since I didn't have the tapes I couldn't import the raw tapes into my mac. Also I had already sliced and edited the files which had taken a long time. They still look very good and definitely look better than the DVDs I had tried to make with the Vegas software. The less you compress / the fewer times you process or encode a file ...the better it will look.
edit: (for example, had I gone from mini-DV to AVI to MPG to DVD and then ripped the DVD to ATV format it wouldn't have looked as good as mini-DV to AVI to ATV format or even mini-DV to ATV format.) using multi-pass during a single encode is often done and recommended to ensure that a single encode provides optimum quality).
Good luck with your encodes!

  • What is the best software for converting video files to .ogg format?

In trying to html5 compliant I want to convert my video files to the .ogg format. After a lot of searching for video converters, I cannot find one that does this; although several claim to but actually don't. Converting audio isn't so much of a problem. So, can you suggest a tool for converting video files to .ogg format?

  • Need help with conversion progrma for MTS video files.  Can't download videos from Sony TX-10 camera

Have new macbook pro 13".  Can't download videos from our Sony TX-10 camera.  I understand I need some kind of conversion program for MTS video files.  Need recommendation for a good conversion program to convert the video files.
    Thanks, chieftd

Well, sigh, that's not going to work.
I love how I can do months of research to choose the best camera for my needs and budget, which is NO easy task these days, but surprisingly find it on the unsupported list when it's a very popular camera.  So, while it seems to support a whole bunch of other AVCHD options from Sony, not the NEX cameras.
The NEX cameras are the latest generation of mirrorless cameras (which, ironically, are great b/c they give dSLR quality still images while actually producing HD video that always records silently and stays in focus b/c it's mirrorless).  The NEX 7 was just reviewed as Camera of the Year.
    Bleh. Oh well. Maybe someday.
And, for anyone reading, Roxio Toast Titanium did convert it just fine but it took about 20 min or my time to set up a handful of clips and then a couple hours to complete converting them for the quality I was looking for.  One was about 10 minutes of a kids' performance on Christmas and it took a long time. It's just not feasible given how many video clips I do with the camera a week - well, feasible when you consider all the cameras where this would be seamless.
Thanks for posting your reply - I appreciate it.

  • Does creative cloud include any software for HD video screen capture?

Does creative cloud include any software for HD video screen capture? I know that Captivate is not offered but are there other software applications available that do the same job? I am not wanting to make tutorials but I am a filmmaker wanting to integrate sequences with screen capture (which I will edit on Premiere)

    Thanks Brian,
Spent some time yesterday doing research on this. There are good reviews and bad reviews for just about every screen capture application out there it seems.
The top-ten reviews gave their gold medal to CamVerce, which I'll probably buy today.
    http://video-capture-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
Yesterday I bought the Sonne Screen video which is rated 5th on the top-ten site. (I figured as I'm going to be editing on premiere I shoudn't need to pay for extra editing packages and as I'm not using it to create tutorials I really just want a good quality screen capture for Windows 8). However, I'm not really happy with the image quality on playback and I'm finding the technical assistance really poor from Sonne. I still haven't received an email confirmation from them.
The others that I thought sounded right for me were WM Capture (though the top-ten review had a few negative things to say about it).
Tried a couple of the free ones also. EZvid is very popular.
Will see how I go and let you know. I'm sure this is very subjective and I'm probably not being as clear as I need to be about purpose of use.

  • How do I change the thumbnail for a video file?

Can I change the thumbnail for a video file (ex. .mov) in Bridge CS4?

Can I change the thumbnail for a video file (ex. .mov) in Bridge CS4?
Not to my knowledge. It seems it takes a snapshot from about the 10th second of the movie and creates a thumbnail for it. On a Mac the finder thumbnail shows the first frame of a movie, both don't seem to be able in getting customized.
It will be down to a good naming convention I'm afraid. Not having CS4 installed anymore but on Bridge CS6 .mov files play on an reasonable sized scale in good quality in the preview window, maybe that will help you?

  • Best software to recover video files on reformatted SD and CF Cards? Or worth seeking professional help?

    Hi all,
The person I work for has mistakenly re-formatted a collection of SD and CF cards (incl. Sony F3, AJA Ki Pro Mini). He needs to recover video files.
Is it worth it to have the cards professionally recovered at a place like Tekserve, or is there a software program anybody here has had success with? There seems to be a lot of recovery software out there and it's hard to tell what's trustworthy. I should mention that the software doesn't have to be free, it just has to be effective and cheaper than a professional recovery.
A few other stray but important questions:
-What are the risks of running a recovery program that fails? In other words is it possible for software to damage the old data so that no other program has a chance of successfully recovering it?
-Most importantly: is it possible to recover at least some data from a card that has been reformatted and then recorded over a bit, but not all the way? I have read that if the whole card has been recorded over, the old data is irretrievable. But there's only a little bit of new material on this card.
    Thanks!

Reformating storage devices usually involves deleting the catalog that tells the OS where files start and end. The files are still there unless you have chosen a secure erase where the systems writes zeros over the whole drive several times (sometimes known as a DoD format).
What this means is as long as you do not try to write to the media, the files are still there. Best practice would be to clone the media then work on the clone. This way you do not introduce any addiional changes.
The more important element of your question is "can I get these files that still exist off the the media?". The answer is a resounding "maybe".
I have used FileSalvage to try to recover material from a failing hard drive. It was pretty successful with small files (Word docs, Acrobat files, Adobe Illustrator images and the like)  but considerably less successful with large video files. I believe it is because video is more sensitive to end of file (eof) markers and if those are not found, the whole file is useless.
If you have reused the card, the chances of getting anything go WAY down as the way files are written to storage devices is not that orderly. Bits get written all over the drive/ flash storage. When there is no catalog to tell the OS what memory locations have a purpose, new files can be written over multiple old files. Will this completely remove any chance to recover your material? Most likely, but if you are purchasing software anyway it will not cost you any additional cost to try on those cards. You might get lucky.
Also, in the locking the barn after the paddle is lost upstream, this is why I always create two copies of the contents of cards before I start editing. 1 copy goes on the on-line editing RAID and the other copy go to an archive drive. Then once a week, I'll back up the archive drives in the studio to a set off-site. This way I have 3 copies while I'm working and 2 copies once the project is closed out. Given the low price of hard drives, it's easy to create redundant backups.
    Good luck,
    x

  • Thumbnails no longer appear for .dv video files - Please help!

I have about 10,000 .dv files on my hard drive and every since installing Mavericks, the thumbnails have disappeared. I see that if I try to open them, QT automatically converts them to a .mov file.  This isn't really a solution since I import them into my video editing software and I just need to be able to see the thumbnails to tell which video file is which.
I guess either of the two solutions would work, but I don't know where to go about looking for the anwer:
I either need to be able to:
    1. Get the video thumbnails to show up again for .dv files in Mavericks
    or
    2. Find a way to batch convert about 10,000 .dv files to .mov so the thumbnails will again appear.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you for your help.

I've exhausted all the searching I can online and I've come up with nothing.  Looks like my only solution is to use a program like Wondershare Video Converter and convert all the .dv files into .mov one directory at a time.
I did one test and it took a couple of hours for the first directory, and I've got about 200 directories of files to convert.
Usually, I'm not one to be upset by things Apple changes in their OS, but this is one of those things where I simply cannot figure out why they would have removed the thumbnails for a video type.  One that has existed for many years.
    Strange.
If anyone thinks of any other solution, please let me know.  I'm probably not going to do the conversion for a couple of weeks in hopes that another solution does come up.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Best software for converting mvk files for apple tv?

I have lots of MVK video files on my Mac which I would like to play via Apple TV. Is there anyway I can play these through Apple TV without converting?
If not what is the best software/settings to use to convert these to maintain video and sound quality of the MVK file?
    Thanks

MKV files usually have H264 video inside them already, and audio is either AAC, AC3 (preferable) or DTS.
Conversion is really easy. You could try MKV tools, but I've found audio sync issues, especially when converting sound from DTS.
Ffmpeg (command line) works the best.
You can get great instructions here (http://www.martinlos.com/?p=41) for getting that set up.
Once everything is properly set up, you can generally convert with lines like this:
    ffmpeg -i input.mkv -vcodec copy -acodec ac3 -ac 6 -ar 48000 -ab 320k ouput.m4v
What that does is tell ffmpeg to use file 'input.mkv' and copy the audio codec (assuming it's H264, which if it's an MKV, it likely is) and to convert the audio codec to AC3, 6 channels (5.1) at 48000 hz, at 320k bitrate. The output m4v file is what you'll use on your Apple TV. Conversion usually takes a few minutes.
You can get info about the mkv by typing ffmpeg -i input.mkv. That'll tell you what type of video you're dealing with, and what type of audio.
There's additional nuances, like removing metadata and chapters, but all of that can be found with a simple google search.
    Good luck!

  • Switching storage for captured video files

Hello -- as always, my apologies if this is an easy question and I'm just too dumb to figure it out.
I have been capturing large amounts of video from my HandyCam onto my late-2008 MacBook Pro, many hours' worth, then editing it with iMovie and burning DVDs -- mostly just home movie stuff but some more professional things. But as you know these files are huge memory-hogs, many many MBs. I have a 700-GB external drive that I use to back up my MacBook using Time Machine, which has oceans of memory available. Even though I have lots of gigs of memory available on my laptop, it seems like the smart thing to do would be to transfer all this raw and edited video onto the external drive. Can anyone tell me how to go back into the iMovie or other preferences and change the default setting, so that video files are automatically stored on the external drive and not the laptop hard drive? I know the MacBook is fast and awesome, but my experience is that computers work better when all their internal memory isn't jammed up with storage.
I might also want to shift all the already-captured video over onto the external drive as well -- though that might create a situation where I try to find a file in a place where it had been stored before (laptop) and it's been moved and iMovie doesn't know where it is.
Thanks for any help, your expertise is appreciated!
    Will

The capture rate is normal at roughly 13 Gigs per hour of video, whether it's converted analog or straight from a miniDV camcorder. DV Stream (.dv) is the native file type for iMovie (at least through iM6) and there's not a preference to change this.
iDVD can fit between 1 and 2 hrs of video on a single layer disc, depending on the amount of compression (and conversely, quality). It's possible to fit more on a disc with other software (eg, Roxio Toast) if that's a factor.

  • Recommended Software for YouTube video download

    Hi
What is the best software out there (bang for buck), free or fee that allows you to download youtube videos easily on your mac and eventually burn to DVD or other formats/hardware? I've run into TubeSock. One of the formats is a save to "Mac" but will I in turn be able to burn it on DVD afterwards? Thanks.

    Hi Tonden,
Your recommendation was right on. Thank you! I used TubeTV to download then MPEG Streamclip to convert for play on my Mac. I'd like to take these video files and burn them to my DVD. What is the format I should covert to in Streamclip for this? Can I burn multiple video clips to DVD? Do I use iDVD for burning? I guess I'm kind of confused between iDVD and imovie HD. Thanks.

  • No support for avi video files in symbian belle

well, the os is super impressive and the video player too.. But there is a problem while playing avi files. There is no preinstalled support for this type of file. While mp4 works fine without any problems. (i'm talking about nokia 600,603,700,701,n8,,etc)

Yeah, there are some issues for some codecs. But you should be fine for aac/xvid files. I can run them without any problem. Also i can run .mkv files.

  • No thumbnails in organizer 12 for any video file larger than 3,1 mb

I am running premiere Elements 12
    Quicktime 7.7.5
    Windows 7 service pack 1
Organizer will not show (or update) thumbnails from video files (.mts and .m4p) when file sizes are over 3.1 mb.
Organizer will play all the files. Element shows thumbnails and plays  all the files.
Importing the files in the organizer or directly in Elements does not make a difference on the 'not showing' of the thumbnails.
MTS files are container for 1080i Pal (Sony AVCHD)
m4p files are are container for NTSC
Thumbnails for both files are not shown
Thumnails of files with very small file size for both formats are shown when the file size is less than 3,1 mb.
I found out about the file sizes when I check the metadata of the clips.
Anybody any Idea om what I should adjust to see all the thumbnails?
    Thanks GN

Just a longer add on to my post numbered 1.
What is the hard drive save location for your AVCHD.mp4 and AVCHD.mts files? If external hard drive, how is it formatted...NTFS or FAT32?
Also, what is the model of the Panasonic that is giving you the AVCHD.mts (assumed 1920 x 1080i25)? And what is the brand/model/settings for the camera that is giving you the AVCHD.mp4 (1080i30 or 1080p30 or other)?
It is the factor of file size that you describe for your issue that has me wondering if more than video codec is involved in your particular case.
Also, please clarify...three megabytes or thirty one megabytes? That looks like a comma in your "3,1 mb".

  • Why does it take ages for my video files to be listed in the menu?

I have my apple tv 2nd generation connected to my airport extreme first generation via ethernet. I have my mac mini connected to the same network (though not connected to the airport extreme) with video files and tv shows in itunes. My itunes media is stored on a hard drive connected to my mac mini and home sharing is on.
It takes ages for my apple tv 2 to list the videos/tv shows in its menu. For example I have my films listed by genre. If I select a genre, it takes sometimes as long as 5+ minutes to list the videos within that genre.
Can anybody help with this frustration?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You probably have a problem with your LAN. If you are using wifi:
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Imovie is not generating thumbnails for MPG video files

    Hi everyone,
I have what I hope is a quick question with an easy solution.  I'm using iMovie '09 8.0.6 to make a movie for my parents of their granddaughter.  Imovie has generated thumbnails for all my video in iPhoto (most of which is .mov format), but two short clips (about a minute in length each) were apparently taken with a different camera and are in .mpg format.  For some reason, imovie is not generating thumbnails for these .mpg videos, though in the past I have never experienced a problem here.  What is wrong? What can I do to get these clips into iMovie or have iMovie generate these thumbnails?
    Thanks.

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.
Thanks for the help so far,
