Software/hardware to use iMac as a TV and video recorder?

Forgive me for asking her, but I could not (easily) find a forum more likely to give me an answer than this one.
I have a DirecTV satellite receiver near to my iMac 2.8 GHz with 4 Gb RAM and i would like to be able to use my iMac as a TV monitor so that I can watch TV on it. I'd also need to be able to record from this satellite receiver.
Today I bought Elgato's Video capture, form a local Apple store, but this doesn't meet my needs (it only lets me watch TV in a small window, while it is recording the picture to a file on my iMac.
Does what I am looking for exist? To summarize, here are the features i am looking for:
Watch live TV on my iMac, using the yellow, red & white RCA connectors, in either full screen or in a window.
Can record what is being viewed to a file.
Is able to deal with both regular definition and HD.
Thanks.
Peter

You need the ElGato EyeTV Hybrid. This works great with a modern Mac. If you have a Power PC chip, you might need another ElGato model that offloads graphics processing.
Check the ElGato forums to see how it works with DirectTV. It works great over the air for HD channels with a rabbit ears antenna. But some cable channels are scrambled, and the ElGato forums should help you sort through that.

please apple people without using the very expensive final cut

iMovie 11 has split screen. Enable the Advanced Tools in iMovie Preferences. Then drag one clip on top of the other and choose split screen.
Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro will allow you to do this with a lot more control.

Using Azul media player app on my ipad  Apple tv will only display sound but not video from movies.  Any ideas on a fix.  I set mirroring to on but it still does not display video.  It will display photos and video recorded from my iphone.

Here are the steps for AirPlay:
Before starting Azul from your (running iOS 5.x/6.x) home screen where have have all your apps we need to turn on mirroring
On your iPhone 4S/5 or iPad 2 or 3, double-click the Home  Button to view your recently-used apps.
Swipe all the way to the right to until you see the  icon.
Note: If the icon does not appear, go to the "If AirPlay Mirroring is not visible or available on your mobile iOS device" section.
Tap the  icon to see the list of available AirPlay devices.
Enable AirPlay Mirroring in this menu by tapping on an available Apple TV, then sliding the Mirroring slider to ON.
Now you should be seeing your iPad/iPhone on your TV.
Start up Azul now and using the settings icon on the top right corner go to the option that say "TV out" ON.
When you do that you will see an Orange screen
Now click "Done" and play the video you want to watch and it will AirPlay

  • Good VHS to DVD conversion software/hardware to use on my iMac

I am in need of an easy to understand software/hardware program that will enable me to convert my old VHS tapes to DVD. I have read about Roxio's Easy VHS to DVD for Mac software, which retails for about $80 which I am interested in. I have a 20" iMac with 10.5.7 on it with plenty of memory on my hard drive. I have iDVD and iMovie as well. I have a VHS player (was thinking of buying a good TV/VHS player all in one). I have many VHS tapes that I need to convert to DVD format and I am interested in possibly doing this for family and friends as well. Does anyone have any recommendations other then the Roxio software?

That all sounds fine, but WAY out of my league price wise right now... I'm a novice, and looking to spend no more then $100 for both the software and hardware to start. Maybe after I get a better handle at this I may invest in a more expensive way with more options, but for now, I think I need something less expensive. Thanks for your advise.

  • How It Was Fixed (Possible Software Bug Not Hardware): Getting the iMac Screen/Menus Garbled and/or Yellow Circle Before Getting Into Finder Issues?

Hi. Possible fix done to my late- 2009 iMac's screen/graphics issue that may work God willing, hopefully for most [In my case it sometimes had that yellow circle that appears before it goes to the Finder but mostly it was a messed up desktop and menus (unreadable mostly) after months, prayers and weeks of fixing it; recommended to be read entirely first coz' it's a bit complicated (like a lot of subplots). If uncomfortable to try coz' it involved a GPU stress test, contact your authorized Apple service center for their advice]. I had an iMac (late 2009) screen garbling a few hours ago (was weeks ago when it resurfaced until it got worse that it's at every boot on Mavericks):
†        I booted to Snow Leopard USB external (my back-up OS) drive then run the first    person shooter at redeclipse.net. I set everything to max, including the display, resolution and graphics setting with fullscreen and v-sync on. I then refreshed it which brought it back to normal (I then tested it's stability with GPUTest 0.7 with Furmark for 15 minutes). * if the display options have been set to max before, bring it back to the default then refresh and then max it again Possibly any games that's has the graphic settings (or more advanced) of Red Eclipse could work (other free ones are Xonotic and Open Arena which are based on Quake 1 or 3s engine I believe).
Optional but not recommended (have warrantied if that's still available or have it repaired at authorized service centers):
If that doesn't work, review articles and videos on how to open an Intel iMac and get an iPhone/iPad/another way to get to the 'net ready for research (I opened mine very carefully on the right side with a cutter with blade extended far prying it carefully then I inserted a flat end, sturdy plastic used for mixing epoxy then removed the cutter carefully to let the plastic mixing tool do the prying) to see if the cable connected to the logicboard which is on top of, is connected (mine was detached but I'm not sure if the adjusting and tilting of the screen overtime for 2 & 1/2 years, detached it) then do † above again.
It could to be a software problem, a possible Apple ATI driver bug that takes overtime to surface (2 1/2 years it resurfaced because this started in my case after upgrading to Lion when Apple coded things mostly from the ground up. Snow Leopard didn't have this problem).
Thank you for your time. Have a great upcoming sunday mass/great upcoming weekend. I hope this helps.

Does an external display also act in a similar manner as the internal one?
Some earlier Intel-based iMacs had graphic processor card issues; not sure what
the symptoms of the majority of them were, but some had odd patterns, others
went black, and some would range from OK to totally unusable. Among others.
So there is a chance the graphic processor may be going out; or just the circuitry
that controls the backlight. An inverter may be weak or other circuit to the display
    could be wearing out.
    http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
If you have access to an Apple Store with Genius bar, they can perform some kinds
of diagnostic tests there even though the computer is out-of-warranty; that may be
of help to narrow down the cause of the symptoms you've noticed. They may not be
able to repair it, however, at an Apple Store; as it is rather old by today's standard.
An Apple Authorized Service Provider could do repairs and testing on older models
the Apple Store's Genius and other may not be set up to handle due to vintage.
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
There is a country locator page to help find either of the above in regions outside
of the US & Canada, not sure how the above links would work; and it appears my
bookmarks to the country locator page may not be accessible now to post here.
You may be able to get an idea about what kinds of parts support the display
function by name by looking into an iFixit.com repair guide for your iMac series.
Hopefully the parts supporting the display are the reason it is dimming down, as
a graphic processor failure likely would exhibit other behaviors than just dimming.
PS: I see you've added content to your thread after I'd started working on this
& the answer likely is a hardware repair; professional testing is worth the time
and you seem to have at least one other thread on the same topic....
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Bought a used imac 21.5 I5, and the owner cleaned his stuff off the HD, when i turned it on, it comes up with a gray screen, and, no way to get on the internet, to download OS X

used imac starts up with a gray screen

You will need to purchase a retail OS X install disc.
You can Purchase OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard.
While you are ordering this, call Apple at 1-800-MYAPPLE and ask for retail software sales and tell them you need a set of original OS system discs for your iMac.
You'll need to give them your iMac's serial number to obtain these. There will be a small, but minimum charge for obtaining and shipping of these discs.
    Good Luck!

  • Help using ipod for photos, music, and video

Guys, I received an IPOD classic 80gig months ago with a college class that I took. I thought it was really neat at the time as I could watch the videos. However, now I'm so glad that it came free with the class and honestly can't understand how anyone can figure out how to operate it. I have photos, music, and videos that I would love to download to the IPOD and watch but after months of reading and rereading the IPOD features guide, I still have no clue how to do it? I'm a college graduate, made the Dean's list. Smart guy, doesn't seem to help me. The features guide will tell you to go to this folder, etc, BUT when I plug my IPOD in there are only like 4 folders that exist! Where are those folders that they are talking about?? I downloaded some photos on my computer into a folder, dragged and dropped them onto my ipod and when I turn the ipod on it says NO PHOTOS!! Same thing happened with my videos and my music? I have a relative in a nursing home who wants me to show her some family photos. I wanted to IPOD those photos and bring them to her. Can't figure it out! Audiobooks??? No way I'll ever figure out how to do that! Are you guys ALL BRAIN SCIENTISTS OR WHAT???

Thanks Neil, for trying to help me put. I actually figured out how to use the notes. I couldn't believe it worked. I was disappointed to see my notes "cut off" as I guess it has a 4000 character limit, I believe it is. Maybe I'll do a search for itunes software on google and try to figure it out. I don't know if the itunes software is free. You know, not for nothing Neil, but I'm suprised an IPOD classic costs over $250.00 and all they give you is a quick start guide. You have to go to the internet to find a copy of the features guide. That's like buying a new car and not getting an owners manual with it. Odd. Thanks again for trying to help me out.

  • IMac built in camera for video recording.

The I mac I purchased last year has a built in cam.I would like to know if I can do a short video recording using this cam.I know this is mostly used as a webcam, however I would like to know if I can do a recording on it.If so how to go about? Will the recording be like a webcam recording (not in full flow but cartoon like) or will it be  like recording on a handycam, atleast to an extent? I dont want the discontinuity woth short pauses inbetween, that we see on webcams.

You can see if you like it by using PhotoBooth's video function, the film looking icon to the left of the record button.

  • Using the iphone to view a video recorded on a separate high speed camera

I use a high speed video camera to film athletic motion. Can I play this back on my iphone? The files are in avi format and would I require any adaptors. Thanks, I am very new to using the iphone.

Does anyone know what settings I should use to export a 1080p video for playback on iPhone4? I'm hoping to use the iPhone4 to playback 1080p video on 1080p monitor. Is this possible?
No. Only the iPhone 4S, iPad3, and TV3 currently support 1080p30 content. Even then the 1080p30 playback support for your monitor may depend on how the device is connected. The iPhone 4 is limited to 720p30 playback.
Is it possible to keep the higher quality for playback through a 1920x1080 hd monitor?  Otherwise, would I be able to sync a 1920x1080 mov file to a new iPad or other device?
Not on your current device. As previously stated, the latest generation of iPhone, iPad, and TV devices support a maximum 1080p30 playback capability but may be limited to lower resdolutions depending on your method of connection to your monitor. This information can be found on the Apple web site TechSpecs page for each respective device.

  • Imac g5 capturing from a video recorder

Is it possible to capture to fcp for a video recorder? or is it best to go through a min dv camera? if so what settings do you need to use in fcp?
    Any help appreciated.

You need an Analogue to Digital converter. They typically cost around £160 upwards.
If you have a camera or DV deck with analogue INPUTS that can be used as a converter - but there aren't many around in the UK.

I have a 90 minute session I'm trying to podcast. The first thing I did was publish it on mypodcast.com. Naively I thought I could just post that URL in the podcast feed URL. I don't have a MAC. • What to use to create a picture and video slideshow/presentation?

I was curious as to what someone would use in order to create a picture and video presentation/slideshow?
I think that iPhoto does a good job with getting all your pictures in order, and then using the templates and choosing your music to create a slideshow. However, if one wanted to include some video and narration into the slideshow, I imagine that they would need to use iMovie as well.
I know that you can drop images into iMovie as well, and I think they are automatically given Ken Burns effect, but if you have a lot of images, I think it gets pretty tedious working with all those photos, when iPhoto will already do all of that for you.
So, long story short. I would like to make a presentation with video and images. I would like to use multiple songs, and possible trim the amount of each particular song down, so there is some sort of mix/flow from one song to the other. I would also like to be able to record a narration and include it in the slideshow. I know that iMovie does a lot of that...I saw the narration feature, and the ability to trim the songs back some, and include more than one song. It also has the ability to choose only the portion of video that I want. So would you pre-create the photo portion of your slideshow in iPhoto, convert it to a movie, and dump it into iMovie? That seems clunky.
What process would you use? In my mind, I picture using a program that had some sort of timeline in order to be able to fine tune the audio and video, and iMovie has a timeline of sorts.
    Currently running iLife '09.

    Ian
I've been working for the last three weeks on a project like the one you describe. It turns out to be far beyond my limited competence, but I'm committed and have to trudge on.
Mine may be a little different from yours in that it has the equivalent of 106 "slides." There are twenty video. The "stills" are either text I've made in Word and saved to iPhoto as a pdf doc or photos. I've engaged actors to read the text that goes with most of still-slides. I thought I could create individual slides with the sound 'attached,' string them together and then make a movie out of the Power Point or Keynote slide show.
    Nothing has worked so far.
iMovie has been a special heartbreaker. I've had at least a half-dozen chats with Apple Care and a couple of trips to an Apple Store to solve one challenge after another.
I can help with  Ken Burns. Tedious is not a strong enough word, and the 'help' menu is not helpful, because it is Wrong., The controls are NOT the least bit intuitive. In fact, they make no sense - at least to me.
[I gave up on iMovie the first time because of Ken and the absence of intelligible instructions to make him leave.]
    (1) Not finding the control. "Help" says to click on the crop icon on the tool bar (between mic and i) or to type "C". All I get is the crop function - Ken is nowhere to be seen.
    (2) Finding it. The crop icon that should have been designated is accessible when you select a still photo. The hand icon appears; on the left side there is column of three icons. On top is Crop; the middle is the duration for the still - the default default is "4 s" // the bottom icon is the gear. Click the gear; there are four rows of choices; click the one at the bottom  "cropping, Ken Burns & Rotation". At the top left corner there are three boxes "fit | crop | Ken Burns"// select "Fit" and Ken Burns is turned off. Why is "fit" is the opposite of "Ken Burns"? I don't know.
Here's a warning and a sad tale. I spent about three days getting the first 64 still/videos/transitions and audio clips assembled the way I wanted them. The audio for 65 went in okay and it looked okay, but nothing would make it play. 66 was okay but not 67 or any subsequent attempt - although the videos after 67 were okay.
During my final Apple Care conversation the diagnosis was: "corruption." Start over again with a new project!
I could select, copy and paste the visuals in those three moves, but the audios had to go over one at a time. Since you can't have two projects going at the same time, I'd have to copy one audio clip from the old project, select the new project and wait for it to come up, make the paste, and then wait for the old project to come up.
So watch out. I gave up on iMovie because the recreation of a new project would be so agonizing and with such a big project, I don't know how to avoid "corruption" for sure, and neither did the guy at Applecare.  I switched to iPhoto, but after a day I realize that it's audio capability requires a process as tedious as trying to redo the iMovie.
Final Cut Pro is probably the right program but that's a whole other thing.

  • Can I give a software gift by using a firend's computer and paying with my AppleID?

I have a simple problem.  I want to log in to the App Store on my friend's computer with my AppleID, then purchase and download some software as a gift.  I don't want to download it for free, as it's not my computer.  How do I accomlish this?

It is a bad idea. Any software you download onto your friend's computer with your Apple ID is still your software, registered to your Apple ID, not a gift. Your software on your friend's computer would be pirated software, as the Licensed Copy End User License Agreement does not allow you to give your software to your friend. And you would have to authorize your friend's computer to use your software. If for any reason he had to reformat his Mac, he would use your authorization to use your pirated software on his Mac.
The best way to give him software is to physically buy him an iTunes Gift Card that covers the cost of the software and then he could redeem the gift card with his Apple ID, buy the software and it would be registered to his Apple ID. You can also go online with the iTunes app and do the same in the form of an electronic iTunes gift certificate. This way nothing is pirated.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
One good example to use as a starting point can be found in the NI Example Finder.  Navigate to "Hardware Input and Output" >> "Modular Instruments" >> NI-HSDIO >> Dynamic Acquisition and Generation >> Hardware Compare - Error Locations.vi.  You'll need to explicitly wire in your new rate into the "niHSDIO Configure Sample Clock.vi" on your response task.
There is also a portion of this code that warns if the stimulus and response waveforms are not the same size.  This is not necessary, and could be deleted from the program. You are allowed to have different size stimulus and response waveforms.
