Software Installation CD, won't recognize hard drive not labeled C:\

My hard drive is labeled I:\.  The installation cd does not recognized this and will not install the software.  How can I get the installation program to recognize the hard drive?

  • Computer Won't Recognize Hard Drive

I wanted to do a clean install of OS 10.5.  Wiped hard drive using Tech Tool Pro 4.  Now computer won't recognize hard drive during install.  When it asks to what volume I want to install the OS, the screen is blank.  This is a new one on me.
Anyone have any ideas?  Thank you.

Boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, but DO NOT Install.
Answer only the "what language" question if presented, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu or the Installer menu.
Use Disk Utility to Erase the drive again. Be sure you are getting Options GUID partition map.
Then use Disk Utility to partition the drive to one partition, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
Select the drive and choose Mount. It should not produce an error. Now you are good to go on the Install.

  • My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

  • Macbook pro flashing question mark folder, won't recognize hard drive

My 2010 macbook pro froze and after restarting I was greeted with a flashing question mark folder. I then restarted again and held down "option" key and went into Mac OS X utilities then into disk utilities. In disk utilities, my only drive options are "superdrive" "disk0" and a subfolder of "disk0" labeled "Mac OS x Base system". My hard drive is no where to be seen. I also tried to install a new hard drive but the same thing happened, the computer could not recognize that there was a hard drive present. What can I do to fix this??

    Hi bigdubee,
The exact same thing happened to my 2010 MacBook Pro today.  Restarting with the "option" key held down, I get only 2 of the 3 options you listed in disk utilities ("disk0" and a subfolder of "disk0" labeled "Mac OS x Base system".
Did you take your Macbook Pro to the Apple store?  And were they able to fix it?

  • Updated to OS X Maverick/won't recognize hard drive now

I just updated to OS X Maverick.  now the imac won't recognize the external HD I've used for years.  Any suggestions? I don't want to lose any data.

I have similar problem with Parallel 5 after upgrading to Maverick. Some of my programs on Windows won't

  • Install Disc Won't Recognize Hard Drive

Perhaps I should take it as a sign from above and NOT install.
When I went through the install, my internal hard drive wasn't recognized but my two external hard drives were. I restarted after turning them off and this time no drive was recognized -- there was the ? mark and the CD rom as my two options when I attempted to quit.
I chose network since I had no choice and luckily the system booted from my hard drive and is working normally.
I hesitate to try again -- haven't seen posts with this problem.
    Anyone have any insight?

First, be sure your internal drive is formatted/partitioned GUID with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) filesystem.
    Perform a disk check/repair and a file permission verify/repair.
    Zap the PRAM and NVRAM
That is about as clean as you can make your system.
Let us know if it works this time.
Maybe it was a message from on high? Letting you know you were not yet ready?

  • Imac won't start. hard drive not spinning?

Ok. I push the power button and my imac gets to the gray apple startup screen and then the hard drive spins down. The hard drive trys and trys to go, but just keeps spinning down. I have no idea what to do.

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like your Hard Drive may have failed (which is to be expected for any iMac G3 with original drive still installed - given their age).
HD often start making funny noises as a warning before failing though.
To confirm this I suggest that you get the original software install/restore CD that came with your iMac. Insert that shortly after start-up and hold down the 'C' key on your keyboard to boot from the CD. If the iMac boots fine but Macintosh HD is no longer visible on the desktop you need to investigate the HD. Post back with your findings!
    good luck!

  • Snow Leopard Installer does not recognize Hard drive in disk utility.

I first at the suggestion of apple technicians because of other problems erased and partitioned hard drive. Now when I go to reinstall Snow Leopard it does not recognize the Macintosh Hard Drive, not even in disk utility. Any help will be greatly appreciate.

To make sure we understand everything correctly, you are saying that when you start up from the Snow Leopard DVD & run its copy of Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, it shows only the DVD installer disc itself in the list on the left of Disk Utility's window? There is nothing else there?
Also, what are you booted from when you try to make an image of the installer DVD, the DVD itself or something else? Are you using Disk Utility or something else to make the image?
This seems very weird for sure. If you were running from some hard disk copy of the OS, I would suspect that its copy of Disk Utility or some OS support file was corrupted, but if you are doing this from the DVD that is extremely unlikely unless the DVD itself is physically damaged.
Apart from that, pretty much the only thing left is a damaged hard drive or other hardware failure in your Mac.

  • TS1369 this is the first time that i'm trying to connect my new ipod shuffle and my computer won't recognize the driver?

My computer won't recognize the driver for my Ipod Shuffle. This is a brand new ipod so why is there an issue?

Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes and all other Apple software to see if that makes a difference?  Use the exact instructions in this article.

  • 2 external hard drives not recognize by system all of a sudden

I have 2 external hard drives, one was used as a backup with Time Machine, the other was all my music storage, including Logic Pro and Ableton files.
This afernoon I was working on my Macbook pro with no problems, system backed up a few times. I was working on a new project in Logic. I saved the file, disconnected hard drive, went to my 2nd computer, an Imac from late 2009, plug the hard drive in, system does not recognize it. I wait a few minutes then unplug the drive, upon doing that I get a message that I've never seen before:
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices has been disabled.
To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may have also been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USB devices will be enabled again."
It's been a few hours, I've disconnected all the devices, I think I figured that one of the drives is faulty. My question is, why is the other hard drive not being recognized, it's not recognized on any of my 3 computers, 2 Macbook Pro's and one imac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is extremely frustrating.

    Try this:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
If it doesn't help, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

Thank you for your quick response. I can then use a ZIP drive for data storage. I want to keep as much of my hard drive free of data as possible.

  • Macbook Pro won't recognize NTFS drive

    Hi there,
I had recently upgraded the hard drive on my early 2010 Macbook Pro to 500gb, and following a fresh install of Snow Leopard, I used the Bootcamp utility to create a partition for installing Windows onto.
During the Windows 7 installation, I again split this hard drive space, hoping to have one partition for Windows and another for file storage. Windows 7 completed successfully and from Windows I was able to see the new NTFS partition I had designated for file storage.
However, back in OS X Snow Leopard, I could only see the Windows 7 drive from Finder, whereas the file storage partition is not detected from either Finder or Disk Utility.
I tried reformatting that drive from Windows 7, Computer Management/Disk Management, and diskpart, but the drive still would not show up in OS X.
(The problem isn't that I can't get NTFS drives to mount; the partition in which Windows 7 was installed on mounts fine. The problem is that I have an NTFS partition that cannot be detected. I have tried Paragon, MacFuse/NTFS3G, and various other tools/drivers to no avail.)
I am trying to have my drive to be partition to look like the following:
    ( 200mb EFI )( 100GB Snow Leopard )( 100GB Windows 7 )( 263GB leftover space for file storage )
However, the following did work by preparing the drive in a PC:
    - Cleaning the entire drive using Diskpart
    - Converting the disk to GPT
    - Creating an EFI partition, a primary partition for OS X, a primary partition for Windows 7, and a primary partition for the leftover space
    - Assigning disk 0 partition 3 as drive C
    - Erasing, partitiong as HFS+ Journaled and installing Snow Leopard onto the designated partition. Then, setting partition 2 as active.
    - Installing Windows 7 onto its designated partition
    - Formatting the last partition as NTFS.
Although I can see both NTFS drives from OS X in this manner, I cannot boot into Windows 7 by holding down the Option key; instead I need a Linux GRUB bootloader for this to work.

First, if you read the Boot Camp Assistant documentation you would know that a BC partition can only exist with a single OS X partition. If you try partitioning the drive further then the BC partition and the appropriate boot loader for Windows is replaced rendering the Windows partition unbootable from the standard OS X boot loader. What you need to do is use rEFIt as the boot loader. It supports booting from OS X, Windows, Linux, etc. Look for it at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. I suggest you read its documentation before using it.
And, FWIW, unless you create a BC partition properly you cannot boot into Windows using OPTION booting.

  • P965 won't recognize optical drives and can't undate BIOS thru LiveUpdate

Changed mobo's from amd x2 to P965 Platinum and all went well except that mobo won't recognize optical drives either through USB  or IDE channels. Heard I needed to upgrade the bios but every time I use Live Update it gives me a "Copy file fail" error. The floppy drive works fine for other tasks and copies fine. Changes floppies and no luck and same result. Tried at least 10 times.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

Before I waste any more time let me try a clean install and see what happens. My old  program drive was an IDE drive and I will see what happens when I install on a SATA drive. I'll be back if problems arise. Thanks to all.

  • Hard drive not recognized (OMG) & Time Machine

While using my MacBook 10.5.8 I got beachball and could not quit apps or restart.  I shut down using pwr button and now computer will not recognize hard drive when checking with Disk Utility, or when trying to reinstall from DVD.
Any suggestions?? Is my HD shot?? Is there any use taking it to Apple Store??
If I connect my external Time Machine to another computer, PowerBook G4) (also running 10.5.8) will it load/restore old computer data??

A Powerbook G4 will likely not understand what to do with half the data on it, because the MacBook is a different setup.       Do you have the original 10.5 installer disc that was used for the MacBook?  If you do, boot off of it, and see if it can see your Time Machine backup through its Utilities menu for restoring via Time Machine.  Connect the drive when it requests you do so.  If it can, but it can't see the internal drive, then you probably need to first see if the internal drive's directory is damaged.  For that you need to run the Disk Utility in the Utilities menu of the installer program for 10.5's Repair Disk.    If it can't repair disk, go out and purchase Alsoft Disk Warrior.  If it can't repair the disk, then yes the internal hard drive is shot.  If one or the other can repair the disk, shut down the computer and eject the 10.5 disk holding the mouse button.  It should reboot normally.
